ines Elementary School recently held its annual Kindergarten Sunshine Circus. Students dressed up as dogs, clowns, strong men, elephants and lions sang songs, recited poems and participated in other fun activities. The Kindergarten Sunshine Circus has been a Pines tradition for the past 20 years. The children practice for weeks, and many of them say it’s the best part of the school year. There are those who need to have every detail of each day planned down to the last minute, with little room for even the slightest compromise or delay. And then there are those individuals who prefer to fly by the seat of their pants; no blueprint, no nothing, open to whatever adventures might beckon. Me, I would definitely put myself in the former category. Routine is my friend; schedules my muse. There is something about the sense of accomplishment one gets from checking items off a “To Do” list that lends itself to peace of mind. Of course, life itself is not simply one giant “To Do” list. It requires a measure of flexibility and the ability to roll with those punches that may come flying your way. This is where that spontaneity comes into play. Case in point: I recently set out one Saturday afternoon to embark on a belated birthday
celebration for a close friend from high school. The plan – to head to the beach for our first, postMemorial Day outing, followed by dinner and maybe some prime sunset viewing and photography opportunities. “Happy Wanderers” we are, indeed. Of course, no sooner did I pack my beach bag, when the clouds rolled in, the winds kicked up and the sun disappeared behind a deep haze. Perfect sun bathing weather indeed. Alternate plans, anyone? Determined not to let the entire day go to waste, we feverishly started brainstorming, checking weather forecasts, tracking the storm radar and hoping for the best. Instead of heading out to the sand, we parked at Field #5 at Robert Moses and decided to take a little stroll over to Kismet, Fire Island for lunch, wander around a bit, and head back – hopefully before the skies decided to open up with the impending thunderstorm that had been threatening all day. Phase one went off without a
hitch, and the sun even managed to show itself for the majority of the journey. Imagine that. Phase two consisted of a quick little stopover at Gilgo Beach – after we both realized that neither of us had ever been there – before heading up to the Northport area for dinner and then to a laser light show at the Vanderbilt Planetarium. And then came the rains. Drenching, sheets of rain, pouring down on the windshield as we made our way down Ocean Parkway toward the bridge. Maybe there’ll be a rainbow, I mused, as I peered through the wipers. Then this detour will have been completely worth it, this trip to the beach on a cloudy day, interrupted by torrential rain, ending with one of nature’s most magical creations… And then, there it was, straight ahead, stretching over Cedar Beach. I looked at my friend and said, “Shall we pull over for a photo op?” Of course. Always time for a quick detour.

The YMCA of Long Island announced today it has partnered with Stew Leonard III Children’s Charities to participate in the 7th annual World’s Largest Swimming Lesson™ on Friday, June 24th, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., to promote water safety. Smile for a Mile
together Thousands of quarters were spread out to display the funds collected on behalf of special needs children for the Smile for a Mile campaign. Young members of The Chai Center’s Hebrew School and CTeen programs, ages 8 to 17 years-old, spent the last several months
raising money to help special needs children by collecting enough quarters to stretch out for a mile or more. More than $4,000 was raised with all proceeds to benefit The Friendship Circle and special needs children and fund programs such as Bowling Buddies, Pet Therapy, Friends @ Home
and holiday events. The Chai Center Friendship Circle’s unique approach brings together teenage volunteers and children with special needs for hours of fun and friendship. These shared experiences empower children with special needs, while enriching the lives of everyone involved.

Smithtown High School East senior Gina Figliozzi was the grand prizewinner of PBS’ “Meet Me in DC” contest for her poster design featuring the U.S. Constitution. The contest tasked students with designing and creating

B-02432 also enjoyed a highly successful showing at the New York State 10-Day Film Challenge, which was held last month in New York City. The filmmakers not only got to see their film shown at the UA Kaufman- Astoria Theatre in Queens, but they also received the 3rd
place award for Best Film in New York State as well as Best Use of Line and Best Opening Titles. “The entire Hauppauge School District community is extremely proud of Nadia Truglio, Brittany Lewis, Allison McIntyre, Katie Parrett, Katie Murphy and Madison Piazza,” said Schaeffler. “It was a pleasure to see their talent and dedication recognized at the national and New York State competitions. CIRCUS FUN - The circus came to town on June 10th, as kindergarten students at Mills Pond Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District showed off their talents to family and friends. Animal acts – including lions, horses, poodles and monkeys – wowed the crowd with their tricks. Tightrope walkers, jugglers, clowns and those brave enough to perform on the flying trapeze were other highlights of the show. Piping Plover Season “Plover season has arrived”, announced the Suffolk County Parks Department, and with that inevitably comes the unfortunate obligation to close access to some outer beach areas within the Parks as required by the federal government. The piping plovers are small, sand-colored birds that nest on dry, sandy beaches, making Long Island beaches an
ideal habitat. Due to its declining population, the piping plover is listed as a threatened species and is therefore protected under the Endangered Species Act. As we head into the summer months, we are reminded of how essential it is that our community maintain steady participation in blood donation. Preparation for events such as these — having blood on hospital shelves in advance — is key to potentially save lives. “By spreading the word or even hosting your own blood drive, inviting friends, family, and community organizations, you may save lives in your community,” said Andrea Cefarelli, Executive Director of NYBC. “We are in dire need of O negative blood with a reserve that is currently below a two day supply, and that is just too low.” Historically, during the summer months, blood centers have had to focus on building up the community’s blood product supply, as it tends to diminish due to seasonal factors. While summer months are marked by a long vacation period, with schools in recess and leisure time, the need for blood never takes a vacation. NYBC urges individuals to seek out nearby blood donation centers and to engage in the selfless act of donating, helping to prevent a summer blood shortage and potentially saving the life of someone in need.

SUNSHINE CIRCUS - Pines Elementary School recently held its annual Kindergarten Sunshine Circus. Students dressed up as dogs, clowns, strong men, elephants, lions, etc.; sang songs; recited poems and participated in other fun activities. “The Kindergarten Sunshine Circus has been a Pines tradition for the past 20 years,” described Teacher Kelli Serocki-Tetrault. “The children practice for weeks, and many of them say it’s the best part of the school year.”

The Smithtown Senior Citizens Department recently held its third Sip & Paint class for local senior citizens. Participants created their masterpieces by following the step by step instructions of the Senior Centers’ art teacher, Debbie Rosenberg. The group sipped sparkling cider and enjoyed cheese

(SBPLI) is proud to announce that members of the organization’s FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition (FRC) Team #810, “The Mechanical Bulls” from Smithtown High School, have created a FIRST STRONGHOLDTMthemed LEGOTM set. Team members Matthew Quigley and Emily McDermott, each from Smithtown, submitted the set to the LEGO company for consideration of turning it into a commerciallyavailable product. The set, which is based on the theme of the 2016 FRC Season (FIRST
STRONGHOLD), comes complete with imperialera castle defenses and LEGO figures mimicked after FIRST Founder Dean Kamen and Executive Director Woodie Flowers. The official name that was submitted is FIRST STRONGHOLD: Blue Alliance, an ode to the red and blue alliances that are incorporated in the FIRST Robotics Competition. With a high volume of toy set ideas pitched to the company, LEGO requires more than just a great design. Matthew and Emily’s design must also go through a petitioning process, which requires 10,000 votes on the LEGO website. Voters will be required to create an account with LEGO, which
is an easy process. The set is currently among the “Popular This Week” sets and already has more than 2,000 votes. “Though the team members still need nearly 80 percent of the required votes, we’re confident that they will be able to make it through this portion of the vetting process,” says Deb Winter and Dave Johnson, FRC Co-Directors, SBPLI. “We’re asking all Long Islanders to help build support for our program by taking the time – less than five minutes – to vote for this LEGO set.” To vote for the FIRST STRONGHOLD: Blue Alliance LEGO set, visit https://ideas.lego.com/ projects/132444.
The Penny Project Matthew Kennedy, a mathematics teacher at Nesaquake Middle School in the Smithtown Central School District, spearheaded a project to give students a better concept of numbers. However, the Penny Project evolved into a wonderful fundraising effort.
To show students number concepts, Kennedy encouraged his students to bring in pennies to fill the jars displayed in the school. The project started several years ago and the collection was up to 84,559 pennies before the start of the school year. This year, Nesaquake

Middle School students collected 19,908 pennies, and that sent the number of pennies above the 100,000 mark. With the pennies, Nesaquake Middle School recently made a $1,044.67 donation to the Make a Wish Foundation.

Sea Creatures Visit
First-graders at Accompsett Elementary School in the Smithtown Elementary School participated in a hands-on marine life activity on June 7th and 8th. BOCES Outdoor Education Department representatives visited
the school and brought some aquatic friends with them. Students learned about various forms of marine life and were able to observe and even touch some of the smaller creatures including crabs, fish, snails, turtles and sea scorpions. The students

Suffolk County Correction Officer Thomas Miller recently engaged in a special project with 6th and 7th grade students at the William Paca Middle School in the William Floyd School District. The initiative was a part of the Sheriff’s Gang Resistance Education and Training (G.RE.A.T.) Program, a curriculum the Sheriff’s Office conducts in schools throughout Suffolk County. During his time teaching in the classroom, the students expressed an interest in giving back to their community, and decided to write letters of support for our United States military serving abroad. Officer Miller offered to coordinate the effort with one of his colleagues, Correction Officer Jose Moreno, who is currently

This process can be prolonged when a nest fails (eggs don’t hatch, or nest is disturbed). When this occurs, plovers will often re-nest, and the process starts again. While adhering to the federal guidelines to protect the plovers, the Parks Department also recognizes that Suffolk County outer beaches are also a favorite site for beachgoers, fishermen, surfers and campers,
and works hard to limit closures and maintain access to the best of its ability. Park visitors can help to limit length of closures by avoiding restricted areas, keeping pets leashed and following instruction from park staff and posted signs. Paddle Battle United Way of Long Island is giving companies, organizations, families and friends the chance to battle for bragging rights on The Peconic River this summer by entering a four-person team in the annual Paddle Battle Long Island Team Challenge. The Paddle Battle will be held on Saturday, July 30th at the town docks in Riverhead with proceeds from the Team Challenge going to United Way of Long Island’s VetsBuild Program, as well the Long Island Aquarium. The Paddle Battle Team Challenge is a recreational Stand Up Paddle Board and Kayak race where groups will compete against each other for the coveted Paddle Battle Team Challenge trophy. The race will consist of teams of four competitors who will traverse the 2.5 mile race course designed for all skill levels. The team with the overall best combined
time will take home the championship trophy along with the title of Top Team. The Award Ceremony will take place during a Family BBQ and Bash, which will include food, music, drinks and more for those cheering the teams on from the sidelines. “It’s fantastic to see teams come out in the spirit of healthy competition to raise funds and awareness for Long Island veterans and their families,” said Theresa A.
