ranch Brook Elementary School students and faculty recently participated in the A+ Principal’s Challenge Scavenger Hunt, hosted by Stop & Shop store #560 in Smithtown. It was students versus the teachers, with the store providing a list of 20 items that each team had to find. Branch Brook Elementary School won! Summer “To Do” List By: Jamie Lynn Ryan So Summer is officially here… now what? Well, for me, in addition to all the normal seasonal stuff most of us look forward to, I am eagerly anticipating catching up on some quality TV time. Rerun Season, as I like to refer to it, is prime time to make use of that “On Demand” feature and settle in for some marathon viewing sessions, don’t you think? Remember all those cable TV series your friends keep talking about that you’ve never had the chance to check out? Well, plop down on the couch, put your feet up and start with Episode I, Season I. Watch a few episodes a night, every night, and you’ll be all caught up before you know it.

Oh, and let’s not forget about that pile of magazines from those subscriptions you just can’t bear to cancel. How many of you have accumulated quite the collection? What’s that, a Winter Music Preview on the cover? Only slightly outdated… take that cup of tea outside and start turning those pages. If you’re feeling especially ambitious, you can always attempt to crack open an actual book, too. I know, I know, such a thing is foreign to most people in this day and age. But remember how much you used to love it? How easy it was to become engrossed in chapter after chapter of a good novel to the point that you never wanted to put it down? Well, summer is the perfect opportunity to rediscover that passion.

Of course, beautiful beach weather always beckons, but the good part is that books and magazines travel easily enough. And with the technology of today, so can TV shows, actually. Take your tablet along for the ride, stick your toes in the sand, and insert a beach chair in place of that couch. You’re all set! Just think, an entire month to reintegrate yourself into the culture that you’ve been missing out on these last few months (or years, as the case may be). Time to do something for yourself, wouldn’t you say? Don’t worry, you’ll still have plenty of time to anguish over all the normal daily obligations. But that “you” time… that’s something you can never get back. Priceless.

The Smithtown Senior Citizen Department recently held its’ Spring Luncheon at the Watermill in Smithtown. The event was completely sold out with nearly 250 Smithtown Senior Citizens in attendance. According to Laura Greif, Program Director at the Smithtown Senior Citizen Department, “We wanted to bring together Senior Citizens from all over Smithtown for this very special event. It was an opportunity for old friends to reconnect and new friendships to form.” Everyone enjoyed the performance of chanteuse Naomi Zeitlin and danced to the music played by DJ Jim Ambrosio. The banquet room was beautifully decorated and the staff took special care of all partygoers. All were treated to a wonderful meal that included three courses, an ice cream bar and a glass of wine! Supervisor Patrick Vecchio joined in the festivities and welcomed all to what will hopefully be an annual event.

What happens when a group of motivated scientists are inspired to give the most amazing and diverse learning experience to kids of middle and high school ages? Sigma Camp! It is a unique synergy of science summer camp and fully equipped laboratories, where research is lead by active, well published, and world renowned scientists from MIT, Harvard, Stony Brook University, Brookhaven National Laboratory, and other similarly accredited institutions from around the world. “I succeeded in my academic career thanks largely to the great education and exposure to the wonders of science that I received early in my childhood,” says Alexander Abanov, a Sigma Camp instructor and a professor at Stony Brook University and Simons Center for Physics and Geometry. “I am convinced that educating kids fully and thoroughly in a real scientific research environment is essential to their overall development and future growth.”

Sigma Camp provides an opportunity for children ages 11-15 for the kind of direct interaction with leading scientists that most students are never given. Only the lucky few chance to experience this, and much later in their college years. Sigma Camp offers in-depth studies in the main area of interest as well as multiple opportunities to attend workshops and lectures on other subjects. In the evening, there are varied possibilities for socializing at campfires, board games, and discussions on such topics as art, history, origami, film, and others. Of course, there is also plenty of time left to take advantage of summertime on our picturesque campus offering swimming and outdoor sports. Most Sigma Camp instructors have been working together at an excellent weekend enrichment program of School Nova at Stony Brook University. This program they created and successfully ran for the past nine years. This is Sigma Camp’s

Outreach Programs second year in existence. The enrolment is at full capacity of 72 children with a waiting list. From the fist year’s alumni of 45 only two are not returning this year. Each student had to complete a set of challenging qualifying tests in mathematics, physics, chemistry, and biology, which did nothing to discourage the aspiring young minds. Applications keep coming. Sigma Camp runs for one week in June this year, and will likely be moving to the last week of August for next year. Children fly from other states and other countries for the opportunity to participate in the camp. Sigma Camp wishes to share the story of its wonderful atmosphere and inspiring learning experience with the public. Members of the press are invited to visit the camp and see it in action during the week of June 22nd through 29th in Shelter Island, New York. Press Day is Tuesday, June 25th. Breast Cancer Help, Inc. former President Lorraine Pace presented $2,000 scholarships to West Babylon High School senior Kimone Beaumont and Bay Shore High School senior Cassandra Crooks. The annual scholarships are awarded to students whose lives have been touched by a cancer diagnosis. After supporting a family member through cancer, both students plan to pursue careers

in health care to be able to care for others. Ms. Beaumont plans to attend Farmingdale University to study nursing while Ms. Crooks will study pre-med at Suffolk Community College. Breast Cancer Help, Inc., created the Long Island Cancer Help and Wellness Center at 32 Park Avenue in Bay Shore to provide non-medical support for those dealing with cancer. Through a series of free

services including exercise classes, art therapy, and massage, the Center provides cancer survivors with support to overcome the challenges of a cancer diagnosis. Study Buddies What’s your plan for your financial future? Commack High School sophomores Jotham Cohen, Michel Glass, Nayib Perez, and Max That designed a mobile application that they hope will provide them with a foundation for theirs. The young men (Team Tech-Ed) entered their mobile application and accompanying website “Study Buddy” in the Junior Achievement competition in February.

The competition challenged the students to invent a product that aided in education. The team’s app would help students “study on the go.” Team Tech-Ed advanced to the finals, held on May 31st, as part of an elite group of only 23 students that made it to the last round of judging. The students were given the opportunity to present their business plan to judges at NASDAQ. More

than 700 students from New York City and Long Island competed in the Junior Achievement contest and semi-finals. The only hint that you are an overachiever is that diploma, so you had better be hard working! Given enough motivation, enough drive and the desire to succeed, even a college dropout can become the billionaire behind one of the world’s biggest companies. So before you pout about not getting that 100 Grade Point Average, or that perfect SAT score, remember, one day you could become Bill Gates.
