Developmental Education as well as an expert in the accreditation of colleges and universities in the continental United States and Puerto Rico. Cecile is a 12-year member of the John T. Mather Memorial Hospital Board of Directors, served on Brookhaven Town’s Ethics Board for three years. She has also been a member of Brookhaven Town’s Planning Board since 2002 and was appointed Chair in 2005. In 2011, she ran for Brookhaven Town Supervisor, the first African-American female to do so in the Town’s 357 year history. Meet Your Neighbor! It all began back in 1976. Our country was going through a terrible recession. Our local economy was devastated. At this time, founder Vincent Costello was forced to close his air conditioning and heating contracting business. Looking for a means to support his wife and 10 children, Vinnie stumbled upon a business opportunity, a retail hardware store. Originally opened 1973, it was a small, neglected, under-stocked store of barely over 2,000 square feet located in Deer Park. With no previous retail experience and no other options, Vinnie courageously embarked on a journey that few would ever have dared. Sales were dismal and the store was in desperate need of attention. He worked every day for 5 years and managed to make the store profitable. While most would have been satisfied with this miraculous feat, Vinnie was determined to grow beyond that one small store. By refinancing his home, he opened a second location in 1982. This 5,000 square foot industrial store was also located in Deer Park, on the other side of town.

In 1988, another opportunity arose. A shopping center was being constructed in the little-known town of Nesconset. It wasn’t the most populated area, but Vinnie had lived there for over ten years and he thought that the residents of Nesconset would respond well to a neighborhood hardware store. Did they ever! The 4,000 square foot store was an instant success, managing to be profitable from the day it opened. Over the next four years, the success of that store helped fuel the expansion of the company to larger stores in Farmingdale and Central Islip. During those early growing years, his children worked in the business and contributed to its success. Their dad taught them the importance of taking care of the customers. “Treat them like family,” he would say. He taught them how to solve their problems and how to learn from them. Most importantly, he taught them that the most sacred bond between them and their customers is trust. In 2001, with Vinnie’s encouragement and guidance, six of his children opened a 25,000 square foot store

in Bellmore. This store was the size of all of the other locations combined - it was huge! It seemed impossible to find enough products to fill it. It took some time, but eventually they had a successful home center. This hardware/home center concept has continued over the past nine years in Massapequa Park, Farmingdale, Bethpage, New Hyde Park, Island Park, Centereach, West Islip, North Massapequa, Northport, West Babylon, Garden City Park, Smithtown, East Islip, Rocky Point, Great Neck and Copiague. Margaret Engellenner, a St. James, New York resident and student at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill – Honors College, was selected as the 2014 Ann Marie Brown Memorial Scholarship recipient. The Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council (NSHC) and its Communications Committee bestow the award annually. Engellenner is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in journalism/public relations. The $2,000 award was presented to Engellenner at the group’s annual scholarship luncheon held this year on

June 6th, at the Melville Marriott Hotel. Engellenner was chosen for the award based on her outstanding academic achievement and extensive community service. She is admired by her professors and peers for her attention to detail, exemplary work ethic, and professionalism. She aspires to become a public relations director for a children’s not-forprofit where she can act upon her most important goals – “working with and helping people, especially children; writing; and working with a team.” The Ann Marie Brown Memorial Scholarship

has been awarded each year since 1994 and commemorates the memory of the late vice president for government and public affairs at the Hospital Council. Brown served in this role from 1983–1993. The $2,000 award and optional internship is offered to a college junior, senior, or post-graduate student who is a resident of Long Island and who is studying Communication Arts, Journalism, or Health Care Administration. The Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum and Planetarium will offer a new summer astronomy program for young adults, ages 16-22. The program will be led by Vanderbilt science educators Tom Rico and Roger Ledgister, who also work with Discovering the Universe, the Museum’s mobile science and astronomy classroom that visits Long Island schools. The program, Young Adult Stellar Discussions, will be offered Tuesday evenings 7:30 to 10 p.m., from July 8th through August 26th, at the Planetarium. Fee: $10 per session with advanced,

on-line registration (www. vanderbiltmuseum.org), or $15 at the door. Participants will take part in “extended, interactive star talks” with Rico and Ledgister in the Charles and Helen Reichert Planetarium. Questions and discussion will be encouraged. “We’ll look at the galactic neighborhood visible to us on Long Island at this time of year,” Rico said. In-depth discussions will include naming various planets, stars, and constellations, their distance from Earth, size, magnitude, and the possibility of such stars hosting exoplanets.

Mars, Saturn and the Moon should all be visible through the telescope in the Vanderbilt Observatory during July, Rico said, with the August focus on lunar and stellar observations. Tripping Down Memory Lane By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I recently attended my old dance studio’s annual recital, where I had the opportunity to watch the entire show from the comfort of the audience for only the second year, after 20 years of “gracing” the stage myself. I use that term lightly, as there were quite a number of cringeworthy moments during those two decades of dance. How could there not be? There was the time I froze midway through a number, right as I was dead center, absolutely perplexed as to what the next step might be. Dozens of others twirled and leapt around me, as I stood there, horrified. Talk about the world seeming to move in slow motion around you. All in all, it was probably a five-second pause; but it sure seemed like an eternity until the choreography (thankfully) kicked back in.

Then there was the year I was selected to sit atop another dancer’s shoulders, while he carried me clear across the stage. Oh, and did I mention we were dressed in circus attire? The fact was, we had rehearsed the lift and the dynamics associated with balancing in such a precarious position for weeks on end. However, we had failed to account for the silky, slippery material the costumes would be made of. You can imagine the rest. I believe there exists a photo of the scene, with me desperately clinging onto the “ringmaster’s” hat for dear life with a huge, frozen, petrified grin, silently willing the stage to shrink so that we could make it into the wings immediately. Ah, memories… And then there was the ultimate classic. My first year, six years old. Unfamiliar with the protocol of lining up before

my number, how much time to allow, etc., my mother and I found ourselves in the dressing room as the first few notes of “Somewhere Out There” filtered through the doorway. My song! I’ll leave you with this image: A dozen or so girls tiptoeing in their tutus to the music when, out of nowhere, comes another tiny ballerina, arms ﬂailing, ﬂying across the stage to take her position among the class. Yup. I always did know how to make an entrance. After 20 years, I took my final curtain call. But the desire to dance remains; the amazing feeling you get from being on stage – one that you would only know if you have had the privilege of being there – still lingers on, even as I watched the next generation of dancers take their turns in the spotlight. May they have as many fond memories as I do (and a few bloopers too!).

Diction, Accuracy/ Execution, Interpretation, Discipline and Appropriate Choice of Music. A “Gold with Distinction” rating is awarded only to those choirs that achieve a standard of performance deemed exceptional in all of the three selections performed for the NYSSMA judges. Five Hauppauge High School students also receive perfect scores of 100 on their All-State NYSSMA Solos. They were Juniors William Recce and Rebecca Trentini and Sophomores Maria Johnsen, Sarah Juliano and John Greiner. Of the total 56 singers

from Hauppauge’s Concert and Chamber Choirs that performed at the NYSSMA Majors, 22 students received an “A+” Rating (97 or higher), 20 received an “A” Rating (94 or higher), and nine received Excellent/Outstanding ratings (24 or higher out of 28). “We are pleased to congratulate all of our exceptionally talented students and their equally talented Choral Director Mark Kimes for their outstanding achievements at this year’s NYSSMA Festival,” stated Director of Fine and Performing Arts Janet Velasquez.

On the June 7th weekend, Boy Scout Troop 343 (Hauppauge) members Nick Sicurelli, Paul Massa and James Trefz assisted the LI Greenbelt Trail Conference with the cleanup of one of their trails in Ridge. Assistant Scoutmaster David L. Reisfield (who is also the President of the Long Island Greenbelt Trail Conference) and the scouts were assisted

by Assistant Scoutmaster Astrid Vansteen and Scouting Dad (Committee Member) Dave Massa. In three hours, they were able to move about three tons of dumped waste which had probably been there nearly 30 years. Under somewhat adverse conditions (poison ivy, ticks etc.) the scouts and parents removed tires, car seats, couches, box springs, construction

debris and yes the kitchen sink (which was the last item out). Much thanks go to the photo’d Boy Scout Troop 343 members and the pile of junk that had been removed. Joining The Ranks Of The Alumni

With every passing day, I become more aware of my surroundings. I try to pick up on the ﬂeeting aspects of life. From the beginning of my high school career, people told me that the four years would be gone before I knew it. They made sure that I was aware that high school is the best time of one’s life. From the first moment I walked into St. John’s, I knew that it would be a place with the power to shape my life. My mannerisms, persona, outlook and mentality have all been inﬂuenced by SJB. Each year, on Alumni Career Day, I would

stare in awe at the past graduates, and commend their accomplishments. Now, as a graduate, I am following in their footsteps and going out into the world. Some of my peers will go on to do big things. While I was sitting in that auditorium of 397 other teens, I couldn’t help but to speculate on which kid would become the author. Who would become the politician? Undoubtably, there are movers and shakers within my graduating class. I can only hope that I am one of them. There is no telling what the members of my class will do with their

lives. As I stood beside them on that morning when we moved our tassels, it became clear that we were in this journey together. I am moving on to Villanova, and we were parting ways. However, I feel as though I will be crossing paths with many of my classmates in the future. As an official St. John’s Alumni, I have joined the ranks of those who presented on Career Day. One day, many years from now, I hope to stand alongside my classmates yet again, bragging about my accomplishments, and hearing what my friends have done with their lives.

It took so many years. To dispose of it will be quite rough - at least for her in tears. For each treasured trinket is a sweet memory Of her youth, of her husband, and her children - there were three. A sweet blue baby blanket from her first baby born. It may be frayed and tattered and just a little torn. She does not want to part with it for any price, you see. Though now adult, he’ll be her baby for eternity. So now she clings to each old thing feeling quite forlorn. For people gone now from her life, she still has to mourn.

Roses pressed in a book to preserve their bloom, She remembers as a gift from her loving groom. She found things she had forgotten and didn’t know she had. She found handmade greeting cards “To my Mommy and my Dad.” If this was better for her, why did it feel so bad? This was her life piled up outside she wanted to declare. She was afraid of all the changes and moving now elsewhere. Don’t make me feel like I’m a problem - I’m your mother after all. Don’t be impatient with me or bothered when I call. She wanted them to know her feelings and to let her know they care. Please listen to me - my memories I need to share!

EDDY GAMES - On Saturday, May 17th, the Smithtown High School East Track team of Matthew Whalen, Patrick Teese, Eric Melcer and Eric Herrmann, under the direction of Coaches Kathie Borbet and Kurt Margraf, won the 4x800 Meter Relay at the Eddy Games. They ran it in 8:05.16, which is a new school record and the fastest time on Long Island for a public school this season!

Volunteer Training

“Mentors are teaching assistants, classroom teachers, support staff, clerical staff and administrators,” stated Bretton Woods’ Guidance Counselor Toby Poveromo. “The Mentoring Program allows students to develop a positive relationship with adults in the School.”

With 24 scout leaders and 3 Webelos leaders in attendance, training for scouting leaders in the Matinecock District was held at Blydenburgh Park in Hauppauge on the May 17th-18th weekend for Webelos Den Leaders (of the 9 and 10 year old Cub Scouts) who participated in the OWLS (Outdoor Webelos Leader Skills) and for the Boy Scout leaders (the 11 to 17 year old Boy Scouts) who participated in the IOLS (Introduction to Outdoor Leaders MENTORING PROGRAM - Bretton Woods’ students enjoy their Mentoring Skills) Training hands-on Program board games day with Superintendent of Schools Patricia Sullivan-Kriss instruction programs. Cubmasters, Webelos Den Leaders and Assistant Webelos Den Leaders were able to learn about the basics of the Webelos outdoor program – how to pitch a tent, tie some basic knots, safely start a fire, how to cook in a box, and sharpen a knife, and more. You’ll also learn about elements of the Forester, Geologist, Naturalist, Outdoorsman, and Readyman activity badges. course- a fun, hands on, training program for adult leaders to help them gain the practical outdoor skills they need to lead Boy Scouts in the outdoors took place at the same time. Inducted National Honor Society members are required to maintain an 87 average (unweighted, unrounded) throughout their studies. They must attend 50 percent of all the meetings and events to remain a member of the Hauppauge chapter. NHS is an active participant in Homecoming, Safe Halloween and the Jones Beach Cancer Walk as well as preparing dinner at The Ronald MacDonald House and serving dinner at Hauppauge’s Annual Senior Citizen Recognition Dinner.
