Middle School Student Wins New York State Essay Contest When Southampton Mayor Jessie Warren visited Our Lady of the Hampton’s School in early March to discuss his work as mayor and to answer a few questions for the OLH Prep middle school students it was an educational experience for the entire class. The students from Valerie Hanley’s History class were learning more about local government, and preparing to write and submit an essay to the ‘If I Were Mayor’ essay contest being run by the New York State Conference of Mayors (NYCOM). NYCOM invited all eighth grade students in New York State to participate in their fourth annual essay contest addressing the topic, ‘If I Were Mayor, I Would ....’ Eighth Grade student Winslow Ryan proposed the use of natural solutions to fix and prevent the problem of chemical runoff and algae blooms in Lake Agawam in Southampton, NY. Lake Agawam has been studied by scientists from Stony Brook University who said that the toxic algae bloom on Southampton Village’s Lake was the densest growth ever recorded in a Long Island water body. As Winslow noted in his essay; “Its current state it is unsafe for anyone,

including local wildlife who suffer the most because of their now sullied home.” The issue stems from algae blooms caused by fertilizer and pesticide runoff from homes surrounding the pond. The algae is so dense that it blocks the sunlight for other plants underwater that need it. Winslow proposed a twolevel solution. To address water quality he proposed “An environmentally friendly solution that would use native plants of Long Island to prevent further algae blooms. We could try increasing populations of oxygenating plants in the lake. Plants such as white water lilies or lotus have circular leaves that cover the water and keep algae from receiving the sunlight it needs to survive.” To address the chemical runoff Winslow recommended “… the utilization of straw wattles. Straw wattles are man-made logs filled with wheat or rice and encased in biodegradable material. They are buried on the bank of the pond and used to slow down and disperse sediment and water.” His proposal also recommended putting regulations on the number and frequency of pesticides and fertilizers that homes in the area can use.

Winslow Ryan of Southampton, NY, is an eighth-grade student at Our Lady of the Hamptons School. He participates in numerous clubs and activities such as the Hamptonix (an all-male vocal group), the drama club, the rock band, the Student Council and he is a member of the National Junior Honor Society. Winslow has competed in six straight science fairs at Brookhaven National Laboratory and he volunteers his time as a cantor at Sacred Heart of Jesus and Mary Church in Southampton. In the future, Winslow would like to become a theater performer, a public defense lawyer, or biomedical engineer. Career services offices can help recent graduates as they look for their first jobs out of college. Such offices may have access to job and internship opportunities that grads do not. In addition, they may coach grads on interviewing techniques and on ways to stand out in crowded job markets. • Seek internships. If part - or full-time employment is proving elusive, don’t be afraid to seek and ultimately accept internships, which can provide a way for grads to get their foot in the doors in certain industries. Summer internships may already be filled, so scour job boards for fall or winter internships.

• Network. Students who interned can get in touch with their past supervisors or mentors and find out if the company is hiring. Such people may be more inclined to bring someone with direct experience onboard — even if that experience was brief and unpaid. In addition, grads can connect with adjunct professors who work in their desired fields. • When job hunting, don’t get pigeon-holed by your major. Just because a student graduates with a particular degree does not mean he or she needs to look for work in that field. In fact, many companies may prefer entry-level applicants with degrees that are not specific to their industries so their new hires are blank slates who can be easily trained. • Customize a résumé for every job. Be sure the curriculum vitae is not static. Write and refine résumés for each job you apply for, mildly tweaking the wording or accomplishments to address the key phrases used in the job listing. Eileen has been a NYS Licensed Cosmetologist for over 30 years, however she has experience in many other industries as well. Paws of War Replaces Tattered Flag, Provides Free Services for Disabled Veteran When disabled veteran Hank Urnaitis answered the door, he wasn’t expecting Paws of War to be there, ready to help him through the pandemic. But that’s just what they did. The organization, which helps veterans and animals, stopped by to provide Hank with face masks and pet food. They also teamed up with Cambridge Catering to take him some prepared meals. When they looked around, they realized that he had some safety issues on his property that needed to be addressed, so they also got busy fixing those items,

too. “Hank is a decorated veteran who we paired up a service dog with back in 2016,” explains John Walis, veteran relations director of Paws of War. “We know he’s humble and didn’t want to take the assistance, but we wanted to give back to our veterans in need who won’t ask for help. It’s paramount that we are there for them and their service dogs now and in the future.” After delivering the essential items, the Paws of War team took to helping with some safety issues that

needed to be done. They fixed unsafe boards in the steps leading up to his home, replaced tattered flags in his yard, and fixed an area of his fencing a tree had fallen on. The area of the fence that was down made it impossible for Hank to allow his dog to run around the yard, adding to his stress of trying to take him out for walks each day. By repairing the fence, Hank will be able to once again allow his dog to run free in the yard. All the supplies for the repairs were provided by Paws of War, and they provided the services free of
