During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, physical fitness, and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches, and field training exercises. Santoli is the daughter of Maria Santoli of North Massapequa, and niece of Joseph Santoli of Nesconset. She is a 2006 graduate of Plainedge High School, North Massapequa.

Beginning on June 21st, Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck will open up the 2015 summer season for young campers with special needs and disabilities. There will be ten sessions throughout the course of the summer, each lasting for six days. Additional information and registration forms can be found online at www. camppaquatuck.com. Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck provides services and opportunities for children and young adults ages 6 to 21 to learn while having fun. Campers can enjoy activities such as boating, arts and crafts, swimming, music and sports. The supportive environment helps children to develop self-esteem and to achieve personal growth while enjoying recreational activities. The camp has been helping children flourish since its early stages in 1941, when the Rotary

Club of the Moriches arranged a beach-side picnic for children with Polio. This inspired the founding of the official camp in 1948, when Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck held its first summer session for 25 children with Polio. Today, it continues to be a safe place where specialneeds campers can enjoy themselves and broaden their horizons. Improvements have been made to the dormitories and the dining hall to provide the best experience possible for the campers. Thanks to the renovations that were made to the dining hall, campers and staff members are now able to eat together rather than in shifts. Private donations are the camp’s sole source of funding; therefore, yearround fundraising efforts are critical to the camp’s operations. Camp Pa-QuaTuck has teamed up with

Simmer Down, Society By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Well, it’s happened. Still days away from the official start of summer, and already the first utterings of “it’s too hot” have been heard. After one of the most bitterly cold, snowiest winters on record, one that seemed to stretch on far past its allotted time, and we can’t even appreciate the warmth for more than a day. What is it that makes our society so…unsatisﬁed? We live in one of the most ideal climate zones where we are fortunate to experience all four seasons for equal periods of time throughout the year. And yet, other than the occasional universal

comment that it’s “such a beautiful day,” we are more often than not in a constant state of complaint. Sure, any extreme can be “too much” for some to handle; but, I think we’ve become so accustomed to the temperaturecontrolled bubbles that we live in that our sensitivity to such things is absurdly heightened. Seasons are designed to be enjoyed outdoors, at least for part of the time. Personally, I look forward to the warmth of spring and summer, the extended daylight hours and the ample activities available – from free concerts to baseball games to outdoor theatre and dance performances to

fireworks…the options are endless. The last thing I want to do is spend my time hibernating in a dimlylit, air-conditioned cave of sorts, one with all the windows shut, blinds drawn and outside world blocked out. No thank you. Let’s put things in perspective, people. We don’t live in a desert. We live on an island, one bordered by beaches on every coast. In between, there are lakes and rivers and plenty of pools of both the indoor and outdoor variety. I’m sure we can manage to survive a few months of summer. Maybe, if we really try, we might even manage to enjoy it.

DENTAL SCHOLARSHIPS - Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center’s Medical & Dental Scholarship Award night took place recently. In conjunction with The Louis J. Acompora Memorial Foundation, Forest Brook Elementary School fifth graders were trained how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED) and in the use of hands-only CPR. The 80 students who participated in the CPR/ AED training at Forest Brook Elementary School on June 3rd, also helped the American Heart Association break the Guinness World Record for CPR. “Hands-only CPR is a potentially lifesaving technique involving no mouth-to-mouth contact,” described Principal Kristen Reingold. “It is best used in emergencies where someone has seen another person suddenly collapse. The hands-only technique increases the likelihood of surviving cardiac emergencies that occur outside medical settings.”

“An automated external defibrillator (AED) is a portable device that checks the heart rhythm and can send an electric shock to the heart to try to restore a normal rhythm. AEDs are used to treat sudden cardiac arrest (SCA), which is a condition in which the heart suddenly and unexpectedly stops beating,” said Reingold. CPR/AED Awareness Week was held nationwide from June 1st through 7th. The American Heart Association and the American Red Cross encourage people to take CPR/AED training to learn how to respond should someone suffer cardiac arrest. “The ability to perform CPR and to know how to use an AED can make a lifesaving difference when someone suffers a cardiac or breathing emergency,” stated Reingold. “It could mean the difference between life and death for someone at

school, in the community or in your own home. It only takes two hands to potentially save a life.” The Louis J. Acompora Memorial Foundation was formed in memory of Louis J. Acompora, a young athlete who died suddenly as a result of sudden cardiac arrest during his first high school lacrosse game. Following this tragic loss, Louis’ parents began a campaign to raise awareness among schools and other public institutions about the importance of having automated external defibrillators (AED), a simple device that would have saved Louis’ life. The Louis J. Acompora Memorial Foundation was founded to ensure that similar tragedies are prevented. The Foundation is committed to improving sports safety, with a special focus on placing AEDs in all schools and youth athletic organizations.

The PTA at Tackan Elementary School in Smithtown worked with the Smithtown High School East Leadership students to present the annual Kindness Games, in support of the ReesSpecht Life Foundation. Students in kindergarten through fifth grade participated in face painting, kickball, tug of war, relay races, hulahoop competitions and other field day games and activities that promote sportsmanship and kindness. HSE leadership students, under the direction of adviser Bruce Lepanto, organized, advertised and supervised

the Kindness Games events. School community members of all ages, including Tackan alumni, were invited to participate in the free event. The PTA accepted donations for the foundation, and the barbecue raised funds through the sale of food and baked goods. The HSE Leadership Club also accepted donations, created baskets to raffle and sold 50/50 raffle tickets. Proceeds were donated to the ReesSpecht Life Foundation, which was created in memory of Richard (Rees) EdwinEhmer Specht, who lost his life at a young age. Formed by the Specht family, the foundation

was established to promote community, compassion and, most importantly, respect in young people through advocacy, awareness, and encouraging acts of kindness and paying it forward. A memorial scholarship was established in honor of Rees. More than $1,400 was raised through this year’s Tackan Kindness Games. According to Tackan PTA President Bernadette Ackerman, the event serves as the culmination of a building-wide week of activities that focus on how young children can demonstrate kindness.

The Art League of Long Island’s Summer Art Adventure, now in its 20th year welcomes fresh faces and fresh ideas for 2015. Under the guidance of new Summer Art Adventure Program Director Marianne Mead, the arts enrichment program that has served a generation of children has extended its weekly sessions for ages 5-14 from four weeks to six weeks of summer fun. New themes and approaches have been introduced in

addition to offering longtime favorite activities. Formerly held at the Elwood Middle School and at the Art League’s center in Dix Hills, the six-week sessions will be held at the Chestnut Hill Elementary School in Dix Hills. Parents have the option of selecting one or more weekly sessions starting week of June 29th and ending week of August 3rd. From 9 to 11:30 a.m. young children ages 5 and 6 and from 9am to 2pm

children and teens ages 7-12 will learn drawing, painting, crafts, and sculpture. Back again is “Animal Kingdom” week, where kids discover the art of working with live animals. Selmer’s Pet Land has brought smiles to the faces of young artists as their cooperative models have inspired beautiful works of art. In three twoweek sessions for teens ages 12-14 there are projects in drawing, painting, ceramics, sculpture, digital design, mixed media, and a field trip to a plein air painting experience. In an effort to expand program options, the Art League has partnered with the Park Shore Day Camp to offer kids ages 5-9 the choice of the regularly scheduled Summer Art Adventure experience or attend mornings of arts enrichment in the Art League’s program and afternoons of indoor/ outdoor recreation at Park Shore’s nearby 15 acre campus. Busing from the Chestnut Hill Elementary School will be provided by Park Shore. In the Teen Portfolio program for teens ages 1417, in two 3-week sessions (July 6th-July 24th & July 27th-August 14th) students will be able to fully immerse themselves in the creative process, develop a sense of camaraderie and community with their fellow artists, and expand their portfolios under the direction of new lead instructor Artist/ Instructor Nikki Girgenti. Studies in observational drawing, figure drawing, mixed media, watercolors, acrylic, printmaking, digital photography, landscapes, book arts, found object art, sculpture, and alternative techniques will be explored. Students will enjoy unique experiences, such as mock portfolio reviews, creating digital portfolios, guest speakers, and much more. The Teen Portfolio sessions take place at the Art League’s center in Dix Hills. Food For Thought Approximately 840 Advanced Placement social studies students from Smithtown High Schools East and West participated in this year’s edition of the Roger W. Sullivan AP History Conference, a showcase of individual and group research papers that relate to a certain theme in a specific discipline of social studies. Students prepared papers and answered and addressed topical questions and dilemmas pertaining to food and society, this year’s conference topic. Now in its 26th year, the conference asks students enrolled in various courses (AP World History, AP Economics, AP Psychology, etc.) to develop compelling research projects in the form of a written paper, accompanied by a visual presentation. Thirty projects, one from each AP class, were selected for panel sessions in which the project creators presented their research to fellow AP students and fielded questions about their work. Panel sessions were moderated by Smithtown CSD AP social studies teachers with help from outside college professors. “It’s a tremendous honor for students to be selected to present at these sessions,” said AP Psychology teacher Chauncy Cone, who coordinated the conference for High School West. Stephen Nadramia, an AP Economics teacher, was the coordinator for High School East. Among the topics students researched and presented were farming and class socialization, the food trade’s effect on cultures, how food regulations have

evolved over the years, the high cost of organic food and child obesity. Conference participants also heard from two experts on the topic of food: Dr. Ken Albala and author Pat Willard, who served as keynote speakers. Dr. Albala is a professor of history at the University of the Pacific in Stockton, California, where he teaches food history and the history of early modern Europe. He is also a visiting professor

Dr. Albala talked about how throughout history power can be defined as control of the food supply. Willard’s talk traced how saffron traveled from its native home in the Middle East to around the world, along the way influencing different societies and cultures –essentially everything from medicine to beauty to cooking, depending on where it surfaced. She also gave each student a bag, which held a saffron corm and a few threads. Another part of the daylong activity was a Junior Iron Chef competition, held in conjunction with the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County. Sixteen AP history students, who were also home and career students from HSE and HSW, were selected to take part in the competition, which required them to prepare a special dish assigned by program coordinator and community nutrition educator Maryann Birmingham. Students were judged on various elements of their dishes, including preparation, presentation and taste. According to Director of Social Studies Michael Chlystun, the conference has evolved from 128 participants in 1990, at Boston University, where he teaches an advanced thanks to the expansion of meaningful AP offerings and food history course in the gastronomy program. He has a genuine growth in student interest through the years. authored and/or edited 16 books on food. Willard has authored four books of her own, including “Pie Every Photo courtesy of: Smithtown Central School District Day,” which was cited by the Atlantic Monthly, Bon Appetit and Amazon.com as among the top 10 cookbooks of 1997.

Interdisciplinary Fair Mills Pond Elementary School students recently brought families back in time as parents enjoyed the school’s Interdisciplinary Fair, which showcased various creative projects centering on Smithtown’s rich history. Illustrations of notable Smithtown structures and landmarks, including the Mills Pond House,

the St. James General Store and Railroad station and Whisper, the iconic Smithtown Bull, along with narratives, posters, photographs and other creative displays about Smithtown adorned the walls and tables of MPES. Students covered all of the places of interest throughout the township, from Hoyt Farm in

Commack on the west end to the old Nesconset schoolhouse, circa 1908, on the east. They even touched into nearby Stony Brook and its historic Grist Mill. This year’s theme was established in conjunction with the Town of Smithtown’s 350th year in existence and Sesquarcentennial celebration.

Continuing Into College Hauppauge High School student-athletes recently committed to continuing their academic and athletic careers at the collegiate level next year. “We are honored to offer our sincere congratulations

to these outstanding individuals and their families and wish them the best of luck in their future endeavors,” stated Daniel Butler, director of Physical Education, Health, Family and Consumer Science,

Recreation and Athletics. In addition, Hauppauge High School Varsity Pitcher Nick Fanti was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 31st round of the Major League Baseball draft.

The Smithtown Historical Society and Smithtown Township Arts Council are hosting an exhibition of works from talented studentartists and photographers, “Looking into Smithtown’s Past.” Part of the celebration of Smithtown’s 350th anniversary, the gallery captures the historic sites of Smithtown via the creativity of Smithtown CSD artists and students from participating Smithtown area private schools. Participating

artists were recently recognized at the opening ceremony. The top entries received awards with Jessica Schimek claiming the Best in Show honor for her mixed-media artwork of the St. James General Store. In the Art category, winners were Griffen Reynolds (first), Mishal Vakil (second) and Abby Portela (third). The top medal propels Cortland into the national competition, which will be held in Louisville, Kentucky, later this month. A secondyear carpentry student, Cortland won first place in the regional SkillsUSA carpentry contest earlier this spring and plans to continue his education at Farmingdale State College studying construction management.

SkillsUSA is a national student organization that offers leadership, citizenship and character development programs to complement the skills training that vocational students receive in career and technical programs at Wilson Tech. Class Leaders Honored School superintendents, administrators and parents acknowledged and honored the highest achieving students of Suffolk County’s Class of 2015 during the Suffolk County School Superintendents Association’s 21st Annual Valedictorian Luncheon, held at the Hyatt Regency Wind Watch Hotel in Hauppauge. Brian Righter from Smithtown High School East and Rebecca Cheng from Smithtown High School West represented the Smithtown Central School District at the luncheon. While the Smithtown CSD does not name valedictorians for their respective high schools, class speakers are chosen to represent each building. The top academic students (with a 4.0 GPA) in each of the two schools vote on whom amongst their peers they would like to see represent them at graduation. The celebratory event was punctuated with music provided by the Islip High School Jazz Ensemble, who performed under the direction of Steve Campanella. School superintendents, administrators and parents acknowledged and honored the highest achieving students of Suffolk County’s Class of 2015 during the Suffolk County School Superintendents Association’s 21st Annual Valedictorian Luncheon, held at the Hyatt Regency Wind Watch Hotel in Hauppauge. Brian Righter from Smithtown High School East and Rebecca Cheng from Smithtown High School West represented the Smithtown Central School District at the luncheon. While the Smithtown CSD does not name valedictorians for their respective high schools, class speakers are chosen to represent each building. The top academic students (with a 4.0 GPA) in each of the two schools vote on whom amongst their peers they would like to see represent them at graduation. The celebratory event was punctuated with music provided by the Islip High School Jazz Ensemble,

who performed under the direction of Steve Campanella. Congratulating all of the valedictorians and student representatives on their hard work and academic achievements were Dr. Roberta A. Gerold, SCSSA president and Middle Country School District superintendent of schools; Susan A. Schnebel, SCSSA president-elect and Islip School District superintendent of schools; Dr. Charles T. Russo, SCSSA vice president and East Moriches School District superintendent of schools; and Lars Clemensen, SCSSA secretary and Hampton Bays School District superintendent of schools. As spring progresses on towards summer and the baseball season moves forward, players begin to distinguish themselves. The same holds true for young athletes in Suffolk County. Having hosted the MLB Pitch, Hit, and run in April Legislator Leslie Kennedy had the

opportunity to honor those young athletes who participated in the competition. The MLB Pitch, Hit and Run is a baseball skills competition sponsored by Scotts and Major League Baseball, and was hosted by Legislator Leslie Kennedy in conjunction with

the Nesconset Athletic Association. It was a crisp April morning when the boys gathered at Browns Road Field in Nesconset to compete in the competition. Those who have distinguished themselves are worthy of praise.

Lab Science Honoree Suffolk County Legislator Robert Trotta welcomed Kelly Bossert and her family to the Legislature for its June 2nd meeting in order to congratulate her on winning first place in the Third Grade Division of the annual Brookhaven National Lab’s Elementary School Science Fair. Kelly is a third grade student at the Fort Salonga

Elementary School. Her project developed from hearing about a house fire and she wanted to know which were the safest trees and shrubs to plant near a home. In her experiment, Kelly learned that evergreens ignite very quickly and are the hardest to extinguish. Trees and bushes that are classified as waxy or deciduous take longer to

ignite and can be quickly extinguished so they are a safer choice. “I commend Kelly and her science teacher, Robert Rubin, for an excellent job in competing in this contest as there were 470 projects created by over 600 Suffolk County children ranging from kindergarten to sixth grade,” said Suffolk County Legislator Robert Trotta.

Groundbreaking Ceremony The William J. Lindsay Memorial Committee and the Suffolk County Legislature today held a groundbreaking ceremony for the William J. Lindsay Memorial in front of the William H. Rogers Legislature Building. The event was held concurrently with a dedication ceremony and unveiling of signage renaming the North County Complex the “William J. Lindsay County Center” in honor of the late William J. Lindsay, the longest serving Presiding Officer in the history of Suffolk County. Lindsay served as the 8th District Legislator from March 2001 until his death September 11th, 2013, following a long battle with mesothelioma. “Bill Lindsay was a friend, colleague and mentor, and he was a particular inspiration for me after I took over the position of Presiding Officer,” said Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory. “Bill worked across the aisle with every member of the Legislature and much more often than not was able to form a consensus even on the most difficult issues. His union background played a key part in his talent for negotiation and compromise while never compromising his central beliefs. Bill is still missed and it is our privilege to be here today to recognize his life of dedicated public service by building this memorial and naming the North County Complex in his honor.” “My dad was a great electrician and a prolific legislator, but he was by far the best role model and father that a son could have,” said 8th District Legislator William J. Lindsay III, who succeeded his father. “My father’s dedication and his relentless drive to provide for and care for our family set an example for me and my sisters to raise families of our own, give back to our communities, help others and to make a difference. He eventually became involved in the operation and management of the union, and served as its business manager prior to his election to the Legislature. During his lifetime, Lindsay also served on numerous boards, including the Long Island Housing Partnership and the Long Island Federation of Labor. The event was attended by Lindsay’s colleagues, friends and family, including his son Legislator William J. Lindsay III of the 8th District. Science Fair Winners The Suffolk County Legislature last week recognized the winners of Brookhaven National Laboratory’s 2015 Elementary School Science Fair. Over 100 Suffolk County schools participate each year, with entrants ranging in age from kindergarten through sixth grade. “I am honored to congratulate these promising young scientists,” said Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory. “The key to solving some of our greatest challenges lies in science, and I commend Brookhaven National Laboratory for making this investment both in these young people and in our collective future.” Spencer Asofsky, who attends Bay Shore Middle

School, was the sixth grade winner. Asofsky, who said he had always been a “picky eater,” wondered whether color affected a person’s perspective on taste. He constructed his experiment by dying lemon-lime seltzer with different food colorings, then asking a sample of 20 people to describe the flavor tasted. All 20 subjects recorded that the yellow beverage tasted like lemon and green tasted like lime, and 14 recorded that red tasted like cherry and purple tasted like grape. Also of note was that 80 percent of the subjects stated that yellow was their favorite beverage because they believed it tasted like lemon. “We’re really thrilled with Spencer’s performance, creativity and knowledge

of the scientific method,” said Donna Bettinelli, the Director of Science at Bay Shore Schools. She accompanied Asofsky and his family to the presentation of his proclamation at the Legislature. Asofsky is the son of Steven and Mary Asofsky and grandson of Madeleine and Paul Boghosian. Other winners of the Brookhaven National Laboratory Science Fair were as follows: Kindergarten: Justyn Harrison of Middle Island, who attends Charles E. Walters Elementary School. He is the son of Greg and Kymara Harrison. His project, “Chelsea’s Favorite Treat,” examined whether dogs had a preference in treats. He found that his dog,

Chelsea, had a consistent preference for cheesewrapped snacks. First grade: Jennifer Tiskowitz of Rocky Point, who attends Frank J. Carasiti Elementary School. She is the daughter of Terri Dietz and Jon Tiskowitz. Her project, “Keep My Craft Colorful,” tested whether household products could be used to prevent construction paper from fading. Of the substances she tested, Pledge furniture polish was the most effective at preserving color. Second grade: Mark Burns, Jr. of Baiting Hollow, who attends Riley Avenue Elementary School. He is the son of Mark Burns, Sr. and Danielle Burns. His project, “Snow Problem,” sought to find an environmentally-

friendly alternative to salt for use in melting ice. Of the substances he tested, pickle brine was the best alternative. Third grade: Kelly Bossert of Fort Salonga, who attends Fort Salonga Elementary School. She is the daughter of Carolyn and Marc Bossert. Her project, “Don’t Let It Burn,” tested whether certain trees and shrubs spread fire more quickly than others. She found that while evergreens ignite quickly, deciduous plants take longer to ignite and can be extinguished more quickly. Fourth grade: Ella Causin of Oakdale, who attends Idle Hour Elementary School. She is the daughter of Richard and Jennifer Causin. Her project,

“Slippery Sidewalks,” tested the efficacy of various substances at melting ice. Of the substances she tested, she found rock salt melted ice the most quickly. Fifth grade: Jack Soldano of Miller Place, who attends Laddie A. Decker Sound Beach School. He is son of Cristin and Steven Soldano. His project, “Compost Conundrum,” examined whether composting significantly affected the growth of plants. Although his findings did not make a strong case for the use of compost to stimulate plant growth, he stumbled across several “unexpected discoveries,” including the “resurrection” of a cucumber plant from cucumber seeds in compost.
