This Father’s Day, consider sharing the joys of playing catch barefoot on the grass and roasting s’mores by the campfire with a New York City child. The Fresh Air Fund is currently seeking more families to give children from New York City a Fresh Air experience this summer. Sign up by July 1st to host a Fresh Air child this August! “What it really equates to is another setting at your dinner table and giving a child a an experience they might not otherwise have. When our Fresh Air child Kenneth comes to visit all we have to do is have a welcoming home for a week or two,” says host father Chris. Each summer, close to 4,000 children visit volunteer host families in rural, suburban and small town communities along the East Coast from North Carolina to Maine and Ontario, Canada. Fresh Air children are given the opportunity to experience a world outside of New York City full of meadows to run in, streams to fish in and lakes to swim in. Submit your application by July 1st to sign up to host a Fresh Air child this August. The Fresh Air Fund, an independent, notfor-profit agency, has provided free summer experiences to more than 1.8 million New York City children from lowincome communities since 1877. Scouts from Troop 125 remembered and honored those who gave their lives for our great nation this Memorial Day weekend by giving their time and effort to participate in three community activities. On Saturday, May 28th, Troop 125 Boy Scouts joined Nathan Hale VFW Post 1469 to place flags at Huntington Rural and St. Patrick’s Cemeteries in Huntington. Then, on Sunday May 29th, Scouts attended a memorial service hosted by Troop 125’s sponsor, Commack

United Methodist Church. The service was led by Rev. Lynda Bates-Stepe, and some Scouts did readings for the congregation. The annual Commack Memorial Day parade was cancelled due to inclement weather so Troop 125 did not march as it traditionally does. However, Troop 125 Boy Scout Paul Mokotoff placed a wreath at the ElwoodCommack Veterans Memorial to honor our service men and women who have passed away. Boy Scout Troop 125

Newest Eagle Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta has known Matthew Meehan for a long time as he was his coach when he was a member of the Kings Park Soccer League and was thrilled to congratulate him for achieving the esteemed rank of Eagle Scout.

Legislator Trotta noted that only four percent of scouts become Eagle Scouts and that three of the boys he coached in soccer had gone on to become Eagle Scouts in Troop 75. “This accomplishment is just another one for Matt who obtained his pilot’s license at the age of 17,”

added Trotta. Showcasing Skills

Bretton Woods Elementary School recently held its inaugural iPad Night. This special evening enabled Bretton Woods’ 4th and 5th grade students to showcase the outstanding work that they have done on their iPads during the 2015-2016 school year. The student presentations featured a variety of apps, including: iMovie, Kahoot, Google Slides, Tellagami, Educreations, Quizlet, Doodle Buddy, Voice Thread and Google Docs. “Our first-ever iPad Night was a tremendous success, with over 40 students displaying and presenting

their work to the more than 100 parents and guests in attendance,” stated Bretton Woods Principal George Gagliardi. Hauppauge School District’s iPad Initiative is committed to providing students with cutting edge technological tools that provide access to information to students with varying interests and abilities. This Initiative is designed to enhance the educational experiences of our students and demonstrate our commitment to 21st century learning. It also supports teachers in the integration of technology into the core academic

subjects providing students the opportunity to learn essential skills for success in today’s world. Skills such as critical thinking, problem solving, communication and collaboration are all critical aspects of preparing our students to become college and career ready and are enhanced by the integration of this technology into our instructional program. Using iPads in a learning environment in an integrated, meaningful way provides students with opportunities to discover, create, learn, reflect and communicate in a “new” digital environment.

Veteran Honored

Senator John J. Flanagan recently had the privilege of presenting Mr. Edward Springer as his 2016 honoree for induction into the New York State Senate Veterans’ Hall of Fame. Mr. Springer joined Senator Flanagan for a special ceremony in Albany during which he was honored for his service to his country during the Vietnam War and for his community efforts since his honorable discharge. Mr. Springer, of St. James, has spent the majority of his life dedicating himself to his community, his county and his country. In 1972, he joined the United States Army to serve in the 101st Airborne Division during the Vietnam War. After serving his nation, he was honorably discharged in 1975 with the rank of Sergeant. Returning home in 1975,

he rejoined the St. James Fire Department, where he began his service in 1971 at age 18, ultimately leading to his becoming Chief in 1988 and serving as the President of the fire department. Since joining the St. James Fire Department, he has continually served his fellow residents in numerous ways for over 45 years including over 25 years as an Emergency Technician. In addition to his volunteer efforts, Mr. Springer has also spent 40 years dedicating himself to Suffolk County residents. He began his career as a Northport VA hospital firefighter in 1976 and was named Chief in 1984. In 1988, he switched over to the Suffolk County Department of Fire, Rescue and Emergency Services as a Fire Marshal. His efforts,

which include running the only Suffolk County Arson Detection K9 program, led to his being named the Chief County Fire Marshal in 2011. He held that position until he retired in January 2016. Though retired, Mr. Springer continues to serve his community as the Commissioner of the St. James Fire District. He also serves his fellow veterans by serving as the Commander of the American Legion Post 1152 in St. James. Mr. Springer and his wife, Therese, are the parents of current St. James Fire Department Chief Edward Springer, Jr. and his wife Christine; and daughter Christine Amato and husband Anthony Amato. They are also the proud grandparents of six.

Second in Division (CMSAA) provides a structure for interscholastic athletic competition among middle schools in the Diocese of Rockville Centre, offering a variety of sports each season, ranging from Baseball, Softball, Basketball and Soccer to Volleyball, Lacrosse, Bowling, and Cross Country Track. This year’s enthusiastic group of young Volleyball players was headed up by parent volunteers, Tyrone Peterson and Hilary Troy, At Deer Park’s Saints Cyril and Methodius School who led two SSCM teams, the more veteran Gold Squad (SSCM), there was much celebration among Girls’ of mainly 8th graders with a handful of 7th graders and Volleyball teams, as the Gold and Blue Squads enjoyed the newly formed Blue Squad, consisting of energetic some end of season cheer. 6th and 7th graders. Meanwhile, the Gold Squad came crashing out of the gate from the very first matchup, sweeping the first three games against St. Patrick’s and keeping that momentum going throughout the season, for a final ranking of 2nd place in the Diocese. Saints Cyril and Methodius has participated in CMSAA programs for over six years and this year’s Volleyball Team includes 16 girls from the 6th, 7th and 8th grades, whose practices and meets take them to a diverse range of Long Island locations. At the heart of the CMSAA’s Mission Statement is their role in helping develop well-rounded athletes, so the program’s volunteer coaches seek to promote physical endurance and good sportsmanship, while fostering teamwork and Catholic values in all of their players. Three students from the Science Research Program at Smithtown High School West have been awarded fellowships from the Simons Summer Research Program. The SSRP pairs 30 top high school students with distinguished faculty in science, math and

engineering at Stony Brook University. The fellows learn laboratory techniques, become part of an active research team and experience life at a research university. Smithtown High School West student Stephen Kyranakis will work with Dr. Wei Yin in the

department of biomedical engineering. Student Hannah Rosenthal will work with Dr. Lilliana Davalos in the department of ecology and evolution, while student Caitlin Unkenholz will work with Dr. James Bilska in the department of molecular genetics and microbiology.

Forest Brook fourth grade students and their teachers hosted an informative and entertaining American Revolution Extravaganza to highlight what they learned about the American Revolution through the

social studies curriculum. Forest Brook families enjoyed the festivities as the students recited facts and sang songs and also as they toured the various projects and watched iMovies the students created about the causes and the major

defining events of the American Revolution. Parents, students and staff also enjoyed a luncheon to celebrate the students’ creative, hard-working initiatives.

Message of Inspiration The kindergartners in Sharon Weissman’s class partnered with their buddies in Annamarie Polito’s third-grade class to share the book “Only One You” by Linda Kranz. They then discussed the messages in the story and choose one saying that

inspired them the most. Each student brought in a rock from home, on which they designed and painted a colorful fish. On the back of their rock, students copied their favorite inspirational message.

Hauppauge High School’s Chamber Orchestra, Chamber Choir, Concert Choir and Wind Ensemble all achieved “Gold” ratings at the 2016 NYSSMA Major Organization Festival. The Chamber Choir received a Level VI Gold with Distinction; the Chamber Orchestra received a Level V Gold; the Concert Choir received a Level V Gold; and the Wind Ensemble received a Level V Gold. A Gold rating is

awarded to organizations that demonstrate an outstanding level of technical and artistic skill in: tone, intonation, balance, technique, diction, accuracy/ execution, interpretation, discipline and appropriate choice of music. A “Gold with Distinction” rating is awarded only to those choirs that achieve a standard of performance deemed exceptional in all of the three selections performed for the NYSSMA judges.

Suffolk County Legislator Robert Trotta welcomed Ava Grimley and Dylan Fitzpatrick and their families to the Legislature for its June 1st meeting in order to congratulate them on taking first place in their respective grades in the annual Brookhaven National Laboratory’s Elementary School Science Fair. Ava, of Kings Park, a second grade student at the Fort Salonga Elementary School came in first place in her class. Using a decibel meter, she measured the noise level on the bus, during school, at after school activities, and at home to find out which place had the loudest noise. She thought it would be the bus, but it turned out to be the school cafeteria. Legislator Trotta noted that Ava also won first place in this contest while in kindergarten. Dylan, a resident of Fort Salonga, also attends the Fort Salonga Elementary School and won first place in the third grade division. Dylan is an avid bird watcher and he noticed that on certain days there

would be many birds at the feeders and on other days less. He thought it had something to do with the weather so he made that his project. Each day Dylan would record the weather forecast, the reading from his barometer and the number of birds coning to the feeders. After 37 days he found that when there was low pressure and wet weather was coming, the bird count would increase in the early part of the day and decrease later. He assumed they were seeking shelter. When there was high pressure and the temperatures were mild, the bird count was pretty much the same at both feeding times. Therefore, Dylan concluded that birds can predict the weather. “I commend Ava and Dylan and their science teachers, Marie Iraci and Rob Rubin, for an excellent job in competing in this contest as there were 470 projects created by over 500 Suffolk County children ranging from kindergarten to sixth grade,” said Suffolk County Legislator Robert Trotta. “I am very proud that since I

Northwell Health Relocates Northwell Health has relocated its Long Island headquarters to a 100,000-square-foot building at 2000 Marcus Avenue in New Hyde Park. The leased building is home to about 300 employees within Northwell Health administration, including executive leadership and the health system’s strategic planning, legal, marketing and communications, managed care, patient and customer experience

and corporate security departments, as well as the Northwell Health Foundation. surge in the success of community newspapers over the last several years, a direct counterpoint to the oftpeddled theory that “print is dead.” The majority of credit for these weeklies’ steady success seems to point to their unique ability to provide extremely localized content that, quite simply, cannot be found anywhere else. While many national and daily chains have resorted to using wire services to supplement their content, community publications remain entrenched in those neighborhoods they serve. Case in point: South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers

currently consists of 23 separate editions, circulating to at least double the number of individual neighborhoods, taking in dozens of school districts, libraries, local sports organizations, clubs, religious institutions, and on and on. We accept submissions directly from these groups, as well as any readers who may have something newsworthy to submit. How many publications can boast that? The point is, not many, leading to a flourishing community weekly that caters to its audience. Imagine that. Growing up, South Bay was always the publication you waited to receive in the mail each week, anxious to flip through the pages to read the latest highlights from your neighborhood, scan through

the wedding and birth announcements, academic and athletic accomplishments and more. How exciting it was to actually know some of these people who were featured – and occasionally, if you were lucky, to see your own name in print. Many clippings in my scrapbook are from none other than the old South Bay. How fulfilling to know that, over 60 years after its initial founding, our publication is still providing the same service to the community, to individuals within each neighborhood we reach. You simply can’t replace that sort of personalized touch. So, to all those weeklies out there – keep cranking. Your influence is being widely felt across the nation, one community at a time.
