Hybrid Theory I recently had the pleasure of attending the 2017 Press Club of Long Island Media Awards; this year, not only as a member of the Board of Directors, but as an award recipient. Our Seasons Magazine was honored with second place in the Best Magazine category, a proud moment for our fledgling publication. While there, I had the opportunity to chat with several local journalists in attendance about topics ranging from the state of the media as a whole to our own publication’s role in the journalism community on Long Island. It brought to light the question of what, exactly, South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers’ mission has been since 1953, and how very unique a position we fill in the wider landscape of community weeklies. We have always categorized

ourselves as somewhat of a “hybrid” publication; far more news content than a shopper, but without the editorial staff of, say, a subscription-based community newspaper like those found in so many small towns in our area. While this description might be confusing to some, upon further explanation at the awards dinner, I saw the familiar nod of recognition – oh, that’s a pretty nice little niche you have there… Yes, yes it is. As such, we invite the readers, those community members whom we serve, to contribute their own happenings, photos, upcoming events and more – all with the notion that, at no cost to them, they can be a part of our next publication. Parents, teachers, coaches and scouting leaders are all welcome to participate in publicizing those individual

I remember being a student myself back at the end of high school and having my mom drop my graduation announcement off at the old office on Hoffman Avenue in Lindenhurst knowing that, the following week, I would receive my copy of “The South Bay” and find my picture inside. How exciting to be a part of the hometown paper; and to share the good news with all my friends and neighbors. The world of journalism is a broad one indeed, one that takes in many different styles and degrees of substance, and in the end provides a little something for everyone. Five students from Dogwood Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District – Ryan Gaudy, Giovanni Bertone, Emily Lam, Nathaniel Philippou and Jack Melore – recently participated in the Suffolk County Math Tournament
at Stony Brook University. Dogwood students matched their math skills with other students from across Suffolk County in a day filled with both individual and team contests. More than 250 students participated in this event, which tested
their vast knowledge of math to solve a series of challenging problems. Melore received a trophy for scoring in the top 10.

BUILDING ROBOTS - Fifth-graders in Jeff Faragasso’s and Brian Pelosi’s classes at Mt. Pleasant Elementary in the Smithtown Central School District recently completed building their first robots. The students built the robots from scratch and tested them by racing in the class’ Indy 500, Robot Edition. They worked cooperatively in groups of four or five, each taking on a role for the assignment. Since its establishment 35 years ago, the SBPWN has helped to unite and connect the female working women of Smithtown, whether they are small business owners, working women or simply aspiring professionals. “Each one of you ladies has a story to tell,” Legislator Kennedy said, “and your stories help to encourage each other

HABITAT BUILD - The Habitat for Humanity Club from Smithtown High School East attended a student build in Mastic Beach on May 25th. As a former small business operator, Legislator Kennedy shared and swapped experiences with fellow female professionals, discussing their experiences and

Despite the street full of happenings, many also took the time to visit the blood drive hosted by the Legislator. New York Blood Center provided an onsite blood bus with phlebotomists, to collect blood from donors in order to help our local hospitals. Every day, the New York Blood Center collects up
to 2,000 units of lifesaving blood for over 200 hospitals in New York, New Jersey, and parts of Connecticut and Pennsylvania. All those who kindly donated were thanked with two tickets to attend a New York Mets baseball game at Citi Field.

(NAPSI)—According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 12 percent of Americans move to new homes every year. The next time you’re among them, you may be able to save time, trouble and money when you choose a professional mover—you won’t have to worry about renting equipment, paying hidden costs, handling heavy or bulky items and being responsible if something goes wrong. 1. Be wary of any “guaranteed” estimates offered over the phone or online. Make sure you show the mover everything that needs to be moved, and get at least three estimates to compare. Avoid any that are too high or too low. 2. Check the company’s ratings with the Better Business Bureau and other consumer websites, and ask family and friends for referrals. 3. Make sure all agreements are in writing, and get a copy of everything
you sign, especially the bill of lading. Never sign any blank forms. 4. Ask questions if you don’t understand something, and make sure your mover has your cell phone number to reach you. 5. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Region 1 I FISH NY program will hold a free fishing clinic on Father’s Day weekend, Saturday, June 17th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., DEC Regional Director Carrie Meek Gallagher announced today. DEC is partnering with the Theodore Roosevelt Council’s Schiff Scout Reservation Director Matt Conlon to offer a family oriented fishing event with instruction in fishing ethics and techniques. “Fishing is a longstanding tradition throughout the year on Long Island,” DEC Regional Director Meek Gallagher said. “Fishing can be an enjoyable and rewarding experience for families and people of all ages, because it allows participants to get outside and take advantage of the nice weather right in their backyards.” The clinic will be held at Deep Pond at the Schiff Scout Reservation, 1606 Wading River Manor Road, Wading River. The reservation is owned by the Boy Scouts of America Theodore Roosevelt Council. Free loaner fishing rods and bait will be supplied by I FISH NY with fishing instruction by DEC staff. The event will begin promptly at 10 a.m. with basic “how to” fishing instruction and fish identification. A brief discussion on the challenges and techniques of fishing will be included. This year alone, CTeen West Suffolk cooked for needy families, held a toy drive, packed holiday gifts for ill children, wrote letters to Israeli soldiers, raised funds through a bowl-a-thon for special needs children, and attended three major conventions; a regional, national and international Shabbaton, where they represented Long Island. At this year’s national gathering, CTeen chapter member Dara Blitzer, of Smithtown, was named CTeen Female Leader of the Year. This is the third year in a row the CTeen West Suffolk County chapter has been honored with a national award. In 2015, it was named Chapter of the Year, and in 2016 one of its
members was named Male Leader of the Year. With over 200 chapters globally and tens of thousands of members, CTeen, the fastest growing Jewish teen network in the world, inspires and facilitates teens who want to give back to their community and environment, with an emphasis on positive character development. The CTeen Network believes in the power of youth and transforming the teen years into a time of purpose and self-discovery. The goal is to turn youth into leaders. Under the direction of Rabbi Dovid Weinbaum of The Chai Center, the CTeen West Suffolk chapter has tripled in size to more than 50 members since its launch just three years ago.
Legislator Kennedy, Legislator Trotta and members of the St. James Community met this morning at the Saint James Lutheran Church to welcome the opening of the St. James Farmer’s Market. Open through summer and autumn, the St. James Farmer’s Market allows locals to browse and purchase locallygrown produce from the people personally invested in growing them at an affordable cost. The ceremony opened with a ribbon cutting
ceremony in front of the church. The opening day featured more than simply market stalls; attendees listened to music provided by local musicians, poetry readings by local authors and craft making, among others. “With all the c o n v e n i e n c e s supermarkets give us today, it is too easy for us to forget that much of the produce we eat can and is grown right here on Long Island,” Legislator Kennedy stated “Farmers Markets like these help
remind us that the food we eat and the people who grow them are right next door.” The St. James Farmers Market will be open every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the St. James Lutheran Church on 230 2nd Avenue, and will be open until the 28th of October. NYS Reward School Smithtown High School West in the Smithtown Central School District has been named a New York State Reward School by the State Education Department for high academic achievement or the most progress with minimal gaps in student achievement based on its performance in the 20152016 school year. Each year, SED identifies schools statewide that meet the criteria as high performing schools or schools that have made the most progress without significant gaps in student achievement. This year, Smithtown High School West was one of 185
schools that received this prestigious designation. “We are extremely pleased to receive this recognition,” said Smithtown High School West Principal John Coady. “It is a validation of the hard work of our outstanding teachers and staff, as well as the great efforts our students put into academics.” To be identified as a Reward School, a school must be among the top 20 percent of schools statewide for English language arts and math performance for both the 2014-2015 and 2015-2016 school years or be among the top 10 percent of
schools in terms of gains in ELA and math performance in the 2015-2016 school year. A school must also have made adequate yearly progress for the 2014-2015 and 2015-2016 school years on all measures for which the school is accountable, including the requirement that 95 percent of all groups participated in the ELA and math assessments. Scholarship Winners Announced The not-for-profit Ballet Education and Scholarship Fund, Inc. (BESFI) recently announced the top winners of its annual scholarship competition held June 4th, 2017 in conjunction with the BESFI Intensive Summer Workshop. The competition was judged by a panel of five distinguished adjudicators who awarded 16 scholarships totaling $5,000. Senior Division winners were by rank: tied for 1st with identical scores were Diana Atoian of Holbrook and Brianna Jimenez of East Setauket who were awarded $600.00 each with 3rd place going to Ava Aubé of Hampton Bays with an award of $425. Junior Division winners were led by Lara Caraiani of St. James with an award of $600 followed by Madison Valenta of Port Jefferson, 2nd, who garnered $500 and 3rd place was captured by Alana Samara of Port Jefferson who received a
$325.00 scholarship. According to BESFI President Dimitri Papadakos, “this year’s competition was difficult to judge due to the overall quality of the competitors. Both divisions were wellrepresented resulting in across-the-board scholarship recipients.” Celebrating its thirtyeighth anniversary, the BESFI Intensive Summer Workshop is a nationally recognized six week ballet program held annually during the last three weeks of July and three weeks in August. The three division program features Advanced, Advanced/Intermediate and Intermediate levels. Daily classes are given by renowned instructors drawn from diverse ballet companies such as the Hamburg Ballet of Germany, the Boston Ballet, Ballet West, the Atlanta Ballet and the Greek National Opera
Ballet. According to Valia Seiskaya, Artistic Director of BESFI, “BESFI provides a wide range of choices for dance students. For ages 8-11, the Intermediate Program is available in both two and three classes-per-day formats. Program attendance can be tailored from one to six weeks in duration with classes taken daily or on alternating days. The BESFI Advanced Intensive Summer Workshop now offers four classes per day which include several pas de dux classes each and every week. The Matinecock District of the Suffolk County Council, Boy Scouts of America, held its annual fellowship dinner and presentation of the Spark Plug and District Award of Merit recognitions on Thursday, May 27th at the Elks Lodge in Huntington. The Matinecock Scouting District serves 2,027 youth members in the Town of Huntington and in Commack, Kings Park, and Hauppauge in the western section of the Smithtown Township. Highlight of the evening was the presentation of the District Award of Merit. In addition, other adult recognition awards were presented. The recipients had been nominated by members of their Cub Scout Packs, Boy Scout Troops, and Venture Crews and part of this was kept as a surprise until the presentations. In 2017, volunteer Scouters were recognized for their efforts in scouting and their community with Spark Plug Awards, Spouses Recognition Awards,

Hauppauge High School theatre students joined with Hauppauge alumni and Long Island high school students from Kings Park, Manhasset, North Babylon Northport and South Huntington to stage their original performances at the John W. Engeman Theater in Northport, New York to raise funds for the Stage the Change: Theatre as a Social Voice movement. Stage the Change launches works created by students in which they can use their arts voices to help create a kinder, more understanding world. Hauppauge High School Theatre Teacher and Stage the Change Founding Director Ruthie Pincus is thrilled that Long Island students are eager to write and share their personal perspectives through their creation of thoughtful and conversation-provoking theatre. Stage the Change:
Theatre as a Social Voice was founded in 2012 by the Hauppauge Theatre Department after a staggering response to the High School’s original production of The AntiBully Project. A series of student-written vignettes, the production was created to address important social issues to students, including: bullying, peer pressure, healthy relationships and more. Pincus recognized early on the potential that existed to expand Stage the Change beyond the Hauppauge High School setting and to explore increasingly challenging issues of great importance to students, including: racism, LGBT acceptance, and human rights issues, to name a few, to larger audiences across Long Island. To that end, Hauppauge launched the Stage the Change: Theatre as a Social Voice conference that

offered five workshops to 200 attendees at the Tilles Center for the Performing Arts in 2013. By 2016, the conference had grown to offer 22 workshops to more than 600 attendees. “This remarkable growth tells us that there is, without a doubt, a need for staging changes!” said Pincus. “As we continue to grow, we plan to offer programing and opportunities throughout the year for students and educators.” The next Stage the Change: Theatre as a Social Voice conference will be held on November 3rd, 2017, at the Tilles Center. It will feature original performances by Long Island High School students as well as Honored Guest Speakers TonyAward Winning Playwright Terrence McNally and FiveTime Tony-Nominated Producer and Hauppauge Alumnus Tom Kirdahy.
On a recent Saturday afternoon at the Saint James Lutheran Church, Boy Scout Troop 888 of Smithtown hosted an Eagle Court of Honor in recognition of: Alexander Scott Capporale, Kevin Carlsen, Alexander Felice, Gunnar Johansson, and Nicholas Sanders, for their achievement of the rank of Eagle Scout. Legislator Leslie Kennedy presented proclamations to the Scouts on the night of their Eagle Court of Honor to commemorate this milestone achievement. Eagle Scout is the highest ranking a Boy Scout may receive, and is earned through their dedication and hard work. In order to obtain the rank of Eagle Scout, one must accomplish a number of things in their Scouting life. A Scout must earn thirteen merit badges from an approved list, plus another eight of their own choosing, and is required to complete a service project to benefit their community. to come. Alexander Caporale has earned 37 merit badges, and created a sustainable garden at Smithtown High School for his Eagle Scout project. He constructed this garden explicitly for the school’s special education program to plant vegetables, and maintain. Kevin Carlsen, who took on increasing levels of responsibilities during his time as a scout, has created an outdoor area for St Andrew’s Lutheran Church to hold their summer youth camps, and a meeting place for coffee hour, with his construction of a patio. In order to also service St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church, Alexander Felice held a pancake fundraiser at Applebee’s in Lake Grove to raise money for his service project which consisted of building a much needed closet. This closet now provides the Church the space they needed for their Sunday school teacher and other events. Gunnar Johansson, led 25 scouts and eight adults in building a vintage style baseball backstop for the Smithtown Historical
Society’s vintage baseball team, the Atlantic Base Ball Club (ABBC). As a result of Gunnar’s service project, the ABBC can now practice, hold games and weekend tournaments against others without the concern of losing and replacing their special vintage-style baseballs. Take Heart With Tea An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay.
The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad
cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the
risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to
be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease. That news may be especially important
for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.

Scholarship Deadline The National Law Enforcement & Firefighters Children’s Foundation (NLEAFCF) invites children of law enforcement officers or firefighters killed or permanently disabled in the line of duty to apply for an NLEAFCF college scholarship before the July 1st, 2017 deadline. “It is our responsibility as a society to see that the children of first responders who have made the ultimate sacrifice, achieve their full potential as active citizens and thriving members of the community. Helping these children pay for college and complete their higher education is the least we can do to honor the fallen heroes who have given so much to protect us,” said NLEAFCF President and Founder Al Kahn. General scholarships provide a maximum award of $5,000 for a single
academic year. Awards are based on financial need as well as academic merit and other achievements, such as demonstrated leadership, outstanding performance in the arts or sports, and/or volunteer activities benefiting the community. The number of scholarships awarded varies from year to year. Scholarships may be renewed annually (for up to a maximum of four years) depending on the availability of funds and the financial need and the academic record of the awardee. Applicants must be dependent children, stepchildren or legally adopted children of an eligible law enforcement officer or firefighter who was killed or totally and permanently disabled in the line of duty.
