The Meadow Brook Polo Club will host the 2018 New York Polo Series from June 3rd to October 14th at Bethpage Polo at the Park, Bethpage State Park, located at Plainview Road & Manchester Drive in Bethpage. Long Island has a long history of polo and the sport is seeing a strong resurgence in interest across Nassau and Suffolk counties. Bethpage Polo at the Park attracts toplevel players, making for exciting, fast-paced matches in a fan-friendly environment where spectators are close to the action as well as offering family-friendly entertainment for all ages to enjoy at an affordable price. “Polo is exciting and very popular across Long Island for its familyfriendly atmosphere, magnificent equestrian athletes and affordable entertainment value. The 2018 New York Polo Series will feature riders and athletes at the highest levels of the sport as well as equines demonstrating their athletic prowess that will certainly impress fans and those new to the sport,” said Robert Ceparano, President of Bethpage Polo at the Park. “We have featured cup tournaments as well as special theme days which will appeal to all ages.” This exciting series of polo events and cup tournaments taking place over the course of this summer and fall offers some of the highest levels of polo competitions played in the United States. They are accompanied by about 50 volunteers, who each pay $400. The volunteers assist those in wheelchairs or who use walkers and provide whatever help is needed along the way. Honor Flight trips are provided for veterans who have not already visited the memorials in Washington D.C. Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Thomas Hand today announced that Honor Flight Long Island is currently accepting World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War veteran applications for a free flight with peers to Washington, D.C. to tour of military memorials. “Created to honor war veterans and thank them for their sacrifices, Honor Flights fly military veterans to our nation’s capital for a VIP tour which often includes the World War II Memorial, the Korean and Vietnam War memorials, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the Marine Corps (Iwo Jima) Memorial,” said Supervisor Saladino. “Honor Flight is an exceptional organization that provides and amazing service to our veterans, as these trips allow us to honor America’s veterans for their service and sacrifice, and for all they did to help preserve our freedom and democracy.” Long Island Honor Flight, a nonprofit group, is part of the national Honor Flight network and organizes, hosts, and pays for the trips, which depart from Long Island MacArthur airport. Flights are scheduled in the spring and the fall, and as part of the day’s itinerary, veterans and ‘guardians’ (volunteers who help make these trips possible) fly in to Baltimore Washington International Airport, where a waiting motor coach takes them on the 50-minute drive

Bossert, SCSSA presidentelect and Elwood School District superintendent of schools, and Roger Tilles, New York State Education Department Board of Regents member. During her keynote address, New York State Commissioner of Education and University of the State of New York President MaryEllen Elia encouraged the valedictorians to ask questions about what it took to get here today and how they can, in turn, support and champion public education tomorrow. “We all benefit from public education, which needs to be supported,” Elia said. “You can give back to support the work that was given to you.” Each valedictorian was called to the stage to receive a certificate and gift of recognition.
During their individual acknowledgements, the universities they plan to attend and their intended majors were announced. The impressive and prestigious list of schools included Boston College, Cornell University, Dartmouth College, Harvard University, Princeton University, Purdue University, Stony Brook University, Tufts University and Yale University. The SCSSA and its corporate sponsors also awarded 12 scholarships to graduates planning to pursue a career in education or social services. In his closing remarks, Dr. Bossert thanked the valedictorians for giving school district administrators and parents a reason to be proud. “It’s the work you do that makes the work we do rewarding,” he told the students.

Historical Marker Unveiled
A historical marker honoring the publisher of Long Island’s first newspaper was unveiled in Sag Harbor on Wednesday, June 6th. The marker commemorates David Frothingham, who published Frothingham’s Long-Island Herald from 1791 to 1796. The marker on Main Street is sponsored by the Press Club of Long Island, which collaborated with the Sag Harbor Historical Society on the project. The marker was installed in front of the property where Frothingham published the weekly newspaper. “This was another proud moment for the Press Club of Long Island,” said Chris R. Vaccaro, President of the Press Club. “We continue to honor places of significance in journalism history on Long Island, and there is no better location
than the first newspaper known to our area.” Jack Youngs, president of the historical society, said, “To have the first newspaper that was printed on Long Island is what many locals proudly say is ‘A Feather in Our Cap.’ We had a newspaper eight years before Brooklyn.“ David Frothingham married Nancy Pell, a descendent of the prominent Pell family of Westchester. Several years later, Frothingham became entangled in a claim of slander by Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton. The claim, under the terms of the Alien and Sedition Acts, stemmed from an article published in a Brooklyn newspaper, the Argus. Frothingham was found guilty and a fine of $100 was imposed, which a friend of his from Bridgehampton paid. A bond of $2,500 was set
by the court to make sure he would never publish anything that could be considered libelous in the future. His inability to pay the bond resulted in him becoming a seaman to earn the money. No one knows the real story of his demise, but it is thought that he took ill off the coast of Africa and died. He was survived by his wife Nancy and daughter, Fanny, who would become Jack Youngs’ great-great grandmother. In the last three years, PCLI has has arranged the installation of historical markers in Huntington, where Walt Whitman founded The LongIslander; in Hempstead, where Newsday was first published, and Roslyn Harbor, where William Cullen Bryant, the poet and editor of the New York Post, lived.

In anticipation of Alaska and Hawaii becoming states, Heft personally designed and sewed a 50 star flag as part of a H.S. history project. His teacher gave him a B- on his project. Heft went on to send his flag to his Ohio Congressman, Walter Moeller, for consideration of becoming the new United States National Flag. It is said that President Dwight D. Eisenhower personally called Heft to inform him that he had chosen his flag design over 1,500 other applicants to be the new U.S. Flag! Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta congratulated Matthew Thomas Baron of Boy Scout Troop 41 for achieving the rank of Eagle Scout at his recent Court of Honor ceremony. Not only did Matthew complete his Eagle Scout project, but also earned 43 Merit Badges and held several leadership positions
during his scouting career. For his Eagle Scout project, Matthew planned and constructed a display case for his High School’s FIRST Robotics team. He oversaw his volunteers who assisted with the project and initiated fundraising events to cover the cost of his supplies. During the ceremony, Legislator Trotta noted that
becoming an Eagle Scout is a great accomplishment especially since it happens before a young man turns 18. “I applaud you and everything that you stand for and thank you for having helped to make our community a better place for all of us,” said Legislator Trotta.

Thirty-nine students from Smithtown Central School District recently participated in the DECA International Career Conference in Atlanta, Georgia. With more than 22,000 students from around the world competing in this year’s event, several Smithtown students were named national finalists and award winners. Smithtown High School East’s Jonathan Golbert was a national finalist for his community service project. Golbert wrote a 30-page manual and ran various events to raise
money and awareness for Memorial Sloan Kettering in honor of his father. Smithtown High School East’s Brian Feminella was awarded a $220,000 ROTC Scholarship. Sunitha Palat and Madison Plourde from Smithtown High School West were national finalists for their 30-page sports and entertainment manual. They worked with Smithtown Landing Golf Course to develop a customer experience management strategy and prepared a detailed written strategic plan for the golf course.
Kenny Indovino, David Wallman and Ian Whitehead from Smithtown High School West were national semifinalists for their 30page learn and earn manual. They developed a business plan and implemented a promotional campaign to sell Smithtown West Spirit accessories at various school events. Jonathan Pofcher, Smithtown High School West was a national finalist in his principles of finance test, and Stefanie Lin of Smithtown High School West was a medalist for her test, professional selling.
Essay Winner Smithtown High School West student Carolyn Qu won first place in the nonfiction division of the Writing for Peace essay contest for her piece on “The South Korean Suicide Epidemic.” Her essay will be featured in the 2018
issue of DoveTales, an international journal of the arts. Writing for Peace is a nonprofit organization dedicated to cultivating empathy through education and creative writing to develop

a foundation of compassion on which to build a more peaceful world. Students were encouraged to write an essay about an unfamiliar culture and explore social, political and environmental pressures, and universal themes.

The Department of Public Safety will host a special Training and Certification program for the newly acquired 19’ Panther Airboat. Smithtown Public Safety Officers and members of area fire departments have been invited to participate in the training/ certification, provided by the U.S. Department of the Interior.
“The safety of the public and our first responders is paramount to the Town of Smithtown. The Greatest Honor “I love deadlines. I love the whooshing noise they make as they go by.” ~ Douglas Adams As I sat in the audience at the recent Press Club of Long Island awards ceremony last week, intently listening to the words of one of our Hall of Fame honorees, the legendary writer and reporter Harvey Aronson, I was struck by the notion that one could choose a particular career to pursue and, so many years later {at the tender age of 89}, remain just as devoutly passionate about it. As he eloquently put it, “I wanted to be a writer… and so I became one.” The simplest sentiments are often the most poignant. In addition to his illustrious career as a groundbreaking journalist, Harvey has also devoted quite a number of
decades to the pursuit of teaching his craft to the next generation. Though I wasn’t fortunate to be enrolled in one of his classes myself, I certainly had my fair share of stellar professors through the years, some whom I reflected upon as I soaked in every word spoken by this fascinating man as he stood before the assembled crowd of media elite.

The Association for Mental Health & Wellness
The Association for Mental Health and Wellness (MHAW) is a non-profit behavioral healthcare organization on Long Island. They serve more than 3,000 clients each year among 33 diverse communities throughout Suffolk County at four sites. Two of these sites are based in Ronkonkoma, one is based in Riverhead and the last is based in Yaphank. This Association was formed in 2014 with the merger of three successful organizations in Suffolk County. Those organizations are the Mental Health Association in Suffolk County, Clubhouse of Suffolk and Suffolk County United Veterans. The Association for Mental Health and Wellness works vigorously to provide a comprehensive range of personcentered recovery and wellness-driven programming for adults who are affected by psychiatric disabilities, trauma and complex health conditions. They run the following programs and services: The NYS-Funded Personalized RecoveryOriented Services, Health Home Care Management Services for Children and Adults, Peer Recovery Oriented Services, Supported Housing for Those Diagnosed with a Mental Illness, Mental Health Helpline, Community Health Education, Support Groups, and Behavioral Health Home and Community Based Services. They also operate an organic garden and multiple food pantries. If you or someone you know
is struggling with a mental health issue, don’t hesitate to contact this non-profit. They truly believe mental health is as important as physical health. MHAW is very excited about its 6th annual Kick Stands Up event, which will take place on Sunday, July 22nd at the Amphitheater at Bald Hill in Farmingville. Lasting from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., this motorcycle, poker run and car show will benefit at-risk and homeless veterans of the Suffolk County United Veterans Project.
