Smithtown Township Arts Council is pleased to announce that the works of artist Diane Oliva will be on view at Apple Bank, 91 Route 111, Smithtown, June 17 - August 24. The exhibition, part of STAC’s Outreach Gallery Program, can be viewed during regular bank hours. Currently living in Middle Island, Diane was a long time resident of Northport and a graduate of Northport High School. Artist Featured At Smithtown Exhibition

PSEG Women Employees Build Homes For Families More than 40 PSEG Long Island women employees joined Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk County at a Mastic Beach site to help renovate the property for a future homeowner. Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk County is one of nearly 300 Habitat organizations nationwide that hosted Women Build projects in May. “PSEG Long Island is excited to represent some of the nearly 300 women on Long Island who volunteered this year,” said Brigitte Wynn, director of revenue operations and executive sponsor of PSEG Long Island’s Women’s Network. “We are committed to working with and supporting the communities in which we serve. This was a great opportunity for women of all skill levels to come together to help a family build a stable place they

can call home and have a positive impact on generations to come.” The Women Build program provides a femalefriendly opportunity that empowers women to take leadership roles and learn new skills while building a home with/for a family in need. Women Build is supported by diverse groups of women who join together to raise funds and build. “National Women Build Week is an opportunity for the women of Suffolk County to come together to work and learn vital home building and maintenance skills, while helping to improve the lives of other families and the communities of Long Island,” said Les Scheinfeld, director of development, Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk County. “We are so grateful for these dedicated volunteers who are giving

their time and talents to make Habitat Suffolk a continued success. Since 2014, PSEG Long Island’s Community Partnership Program and Women’s Network have supported many builds and the National Women Build Week. PSEG Long Island is committed to giving back to the people and communities it serves by actively supporting hundreds of local charity events each year through the company’s Community Partnership Program. The Charity of the Month for June is: New Ground www.newground.org

New Ground is a non-profit organization that helps to break the cycle of homelessness right here in Nassau and Suffolk counties. This organization began all from the vision of an educator that was committed to providing a safe haven for those living in poverty. This educator saw that shelters were only providing a short-term fix to a problem that needed a real, lasting solution. After envisioning an organization that provided a holistic suite of support services while empowering participants to help themselves, she founded New Ground in 1991 to do just that.

Based in Levittown, New Ground offers Veterans and families the following main programs to truly help them conquer homelessness: their Long Term Housing Program, their JumpStart Program and their Veterans Program. Their services include Adult Workshops, Career Development, Education Advocacy, Education Assistance, Financial Literacy, Reading All-Stars, Special Memories and Tutoring.

This organization is also in need of additional volunteers to help out in various areas. If you have a background in Education and wish to help tutor individuals out of their Levittown Main Office, the opportunity is available! You can also get involved with one of their Event Committees to help coordinate one of their upcoming special events, or with their Program Committee, which meets quarterly to review overall programs and services.

Their mission is to Repair Homes, Revitalize Communities and Rebuild Lives. They help Long Island’s economically-disadvantaged homeowners so they can live in comfort and safety while maintaining their independence. Their services may include plumbing and electrical repairs, weatherization, installation of smoke alarms, restoring heat and hot water, back and front yard clean-up, constructing wheelchair ramps, installing grab bars and so much more. Commack High School senior, Danielle Ranucci, has been awarded the prestigious Hank Logeman/News 12 High School Journalism Award. This award is given to the student who does the most to promote high school journalism on Long Island. An avid writer, Danielle’s storytelling ability and natural curiosity about people led her to journalism. She attended the Stony Brook University Robert W. Greene Summer Institute for High School Journalism, and the

Columbia Scholastic Press Association Summer Journalism Workshop. Danielle credits her success to the experience she gained through leading the school newspaper, The Courant, and the school’s literary magazine, Etchings. Christina Semple, adviser of The Courant since 2001, shared that Danielle is the second Commack High School student to ever win this award. The publication has been honored with over 400 awards for

writing, art and design since 2001. “Danielle has covered a variety of stories throughout her time on the newspaper staff. She never backs down from a challenge in reporting. It has been a pleasure to watch her skills grow and flourish over these past four years,” said Semple. Danielle will be attending Princeton University in the fall as an English/ Comparative Literature major with a certificate in Creative Writing.

St Joseph’s CYO sponsored the 33rd Annual Jennifer Goff Memorial Track Meet! Eleven Other CYO Track Teams joined St Joseph’s - Ronkonkoma to celebrate a Young Track Runner taken from us way too young. Jennifer was a young Track star for St Joseph’s and

met an untimely death walking home alone from Christmas shopping at 13 years old. The Meet had originally Run Relays to show that children should stay together, but as it has progressed, the Meet has added boys events and individual events. The Meet features races in Grades K-8

CHARACTER EDUCATION SHINES - The fifth grade classes at Dogwood Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District participated in an interactive play that taught the character education traits of tolerance, respect and responsibility to their younger classmates. Students were asked to “turn and talk” to decide whether the actors exemplified the traits they were trying to show. The fifth grade students really conveyed the messages well as the younger students were able to share what they learned such as “be kind,” “don’t think you are better than others,” “be inclusive,” “be responsible without being asked” and “show everyone respect, always.” The fifth grade students felt empowered as leaders of the school by being able to impart these valuable lessons. The Community Service Club at Accompsett Middle School in the Smithtown Central School District is hard at work with the members of the community to help raise awareness for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The club, along with the owners of Ralph’s Ices in Smithtown, recently hosted a fundraiser to help support a local father who is nominated for the Leukemia

and Lymphoma Society’s Man and Woman of the Year award. Asaf German, the father of a sixth grade student at Accompsett Middle School, is a nominee for this campaign. He is passionate about his efforts to raise awareness and fundraise for those afflicted with blood cancer. The Accompsett Middle School club raised $476 to be donated to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The

Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Man and Woman of the Year campaign is a 10-week philanthropic competition for leaders in local communities across the United States. Candidates and their teammates raise funds for LLS in honor of local blood cancer survivors. The candidate team that raises the most funds during the competition is awarded Man or Woman of the Year.

For over 25 years, Smithtown’s Lauren Sklarin has been advocating for Long Island businesses and individuals, most currently as the director of community relations for Orchard Estate of Woodbury, a Benchmarkassisted living and memory care community under construction in Woodbury, N.Y. Today, Orchard Estate is announcing that her advocacy work and achievements have earned her the Long Island Power Woman award. Recently at Leonard’s Palazzo in Great Neck, Sklarin was recognized as a changemaker, rainmaker, innovator and being a voice to impact change. Drawing on the experience of caring for both of her grandmothers, she is passionate about helping Long Island seniors and their families through the aging process. She frequently educates the public about dementia and enjoys helping people obtain the best quality care to meet their needs. “Lauren’s positivity and immense energy around helping seniors in our community is a rare quality and something that everyone is benefiting from,” says Doug Cormack, executive director of Orchard Estate. “She makes Orchard Estate and the communities we serve a much better place, and I can think of no one else, female or male, who is more worthy of this award.” Sklarin is also passionate about helping children learn the skills they need to succeed in life. With two children in the Smithtown School District, Sklarin spent three years as vice president and secretary of the PTA of Accompsett Middle School where she led many successful fundraisers. Prior to joining Orchard Estate, Sklarin served as director of community relations for Home Instead Senior Care for Central Suffolk County. Before that, she served in account management roles for a number of public relations agencies, including Publicis and Edelman. She graduated from SUNY New Paltz with a bachelor’s degree in journalism. The Long Island Power Woman awards recognize successful business, community, cultural, political, civic and religious female leaders. The idea is to bring women together to support and learn from one another so they can achieve their goals. The annual event gathers Long Island’s high-powered businesswomen together to celebrate their achievements and create powerful allies in the workplace and community.

Students tested and hypothesized their experiments during the STEM Fair to invited guests and Smithtown Central School District administrators in attendance. “STEM is a real career path for some of these students,” said Smithtown Elementary School Principal Janine Lavery. “This group of students

was the first to work with our launch of Project Lead the Way in second grade.
