Smithtown Recreation is happy to announce that we are still accepting registration for our summer Baseball Camp. The camp is geared for boys ages 7-15. The Regular camp, held at Gaynor Park in St. James, is offered in three sessions for boys ages 7-11. Each session runs for two weeks, Monday through Thursday. The Advanced Camp, held at Brown’s Road in Nesconset, is offered for two sessions for boys ages 12-15. Raindates are on Fridays. Watching From The Wings By: Jamie Lynn Ryan As I write this column, this coming weekend will mark the first dance recital in nearly 20 years at my studio that I will not be a part of. For the first time, I will have the pleasure of viewing the entire three-hour extravaganza from the comfort of my very own auditorium seat. Sure beats racing back and forth between numbers and quick changes to stand – more like hover – near the door, hoping to catch a glimpse of three minutes or so... and then hightailing it backstage in time to line up for my own dance! But seating arrangements aside, there will of course
be that wistful, bittersweet sensation that, just last year (and nearly two thirds of my life before that) that used to be me up on stage, decked out in full costume, makeup, hair… the whole deal. (Oh, and glitter. Can’t forget glitter.) As with any transition, it is often met with mixed emotions – that sense of knowing when the time has come to move on, yet sadness that you will be leaving your comfort zone of people and places and things you have grown to expect as part of your life. Time does move on, things do change; and, in the end, you eventually grow used to the sometimes subtle, sometimes drastic alterations
to “life as you know it.” It’s the same with graduations, with changes in residence or job – everything requires a period of adjustment. And then, without realizing it, there comes a day when you take a step back and realize that this has become the new norm. So here’s to that new norm, to sitting in the audience and being able to truly appreciate all the hard work and dedication that has gone into creating the spectacle before me. And if – no, when – I become nostalgic for my own time in the spotlight, I will call upon the 20 years of fond memories I was fortunate to be a part of... and smile.

Big Daddy Golf Classic Sports stars, celebrities, and local business leaders will converge at Oheka Castle at The Cold Spring Harbor Country Club for the 2nd Annual Big Daddy Celebrity Golf Classic on Monday, June 24th, to benefit North Shore- LIJ’s Brain Aneurysm Center. “Big Daddy,” as he is known to sports fans and television viewers, is Rich Salgado, a New Hyde Park, NY native and former football player from the University of Maryland and owner of Coastal Advisors, LLC, an insurance company which serves professional athletes and industry leaders. The Big Daddy Celebrity Golf Classic was inspired by a real life-threatening experience when Mr.Salgado suffered a sudden brain aneurysm in 2008 and was treated by David Chalif, MD and Avi Setton, MD, co-directors of North Shore-LIJ’s Brain Aneurysm Center at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, NY. Thanks to Dr. Chalif and Dr. Setton, along with the dedicated expertise of the hospital’s nurses and support staff, Mr. Salgado made a complete recovery. Mr. Salgado made a heartfelt decision to “pay it forward” by organizing an
annual philanthropic event to help raise funds for the hospital’s clinical and research programs. “I am here today because of the outstanding medical care I received from North Shore-LIJ’s Brain Aneurysm Center,” said Mr. Salgado. “Dr. Chalif and Dr. Setton saved my life and I owe both of these physicians a great deal of gratitude! I knew from the moment after my surgery, I wanted to help the doctors and nurses who got me through one of the most life-altering experiences of my life.” Last year, the first annual Big Daddy Celebrity Golf Classic raised $70,000 for North Shore-LIJ’s Brain Aneurysm Center. An array of Mr. Salgado’s sports celebrity clients and friends including Jason Kidd, Michael Strahan and Mike Tyson, amongst many others, helped make the tournament a success in its first year. This year, an impressive roster of elite professional sports celebrities, including former professional athletes Tiki Barber, Charles Oakley, Gary Sheffield, and New York Giants Justin Tuck, will be among the participants. In addition, the event will cite two honorees: Michael
Strahan, former New York Giants All-Pro Linebacker and current co-host of the nationally syndicated “Live with Kelly and Michael,” and Scott Rechler, CEO and Chairman of RXR Realty, a leading real estate company in the New York tri-state area. “We are so grateful to Mr. Salgado in his efforts to promote awareness about brain aneurysms,” said David Chalif, MD, chief of neurovascular neurosurgery at North Shore University Hospital and co-director of North Shore-LIJs Brain Aneurysm Center. “The funds raised from the event, will enable us to further brain aneurysm research, as well as to further educate the public about the warning signs of a brain aneurysm.” To learn more about the event or to purchase tickets and make a donation, please go to bigdaddygolfclassic. com. Your receipts provide a great cross-reference check and guard against suspicious activity. You have 30 days from the date of your statement to notify your financial institution of any discrepancies; otherwise, you can be liable for any purchases. • Protect your computer when online shopping: Make sure your security patch and anti-virus software are updated regularly. On Thursday, June 6th, The Rotary Club of Smithtown-Sunrise Guest Speaker was Dr. Anthony Annunziato, Superintendent of the Smithtown Schools speaking on the topic of School Safety Measures. Dr Annunziato’s key points covered... The Challenges of School Safety Today, Security Measures At Smithtown Before and After Sandy Hook and Considerations For Improving School Safety In The Future. After the Sandy Hook Elementary School Shooting ... Dr. Anthony Annunziato reviewed the current security procedures with principals, staff and students getting feedback on making the district more secure for both the short and long term. He deployed a new “mobile security patrol” responsible for keeping an eye out at all of the district’s elementary schools and stated that this procedure would continue indefinitely. The Smithtown District is in the middle of an implementation of cameras in all buildings both internally and externally. Last year the district installed a command center that enables security staff to monitor all buildings.
Currently, the district has cameras installed at the middle and high schools. The elementary school’s security system previously was to be overhauled this summer... however, due to the Sandy Hook shooting the Smithtown District has moved to install these cameras immediately and a schedule is already in place for all elementary schools. In addition, a security guard will now monitor the buildings both day and night. Prior to Newtown, Dr. Annunziato scheduled a meeting with companies from the Applied Science Foundation (for Homeland Security) regarding Project SAFEguard ... Purpose being to audit the entire security and emergency disaster plans of the Smithtown District. Their proposal will determine the depth and length in which the district could best utilize the current resources and invest in new ones. Annunziato stated that we recognize the preciousness of the children sent to our schools daily and take their protection and safety very seriously ... knowing there is always room for improvement in our systems. Anthony Annunziato has served as a Superintendent of schools for the last
eight years, current in the Smithtown Central School District in Suffolk County, New York. Dr. Annunziato hold a B.A. in History and an M.S.ed in Social Studies Education from Queens College, CUNY. He has also earned an Ed.M. and Ed.D. in Education Administration from Teachers College, Columbia University. His doctoral research was competed under Dr. Margaret Terry Orr as part of a research grant to study the school superintendency. His own research was on the acquisition of political leadership skills of superintendents. Dr. Anthony Annuziato has been an educator for twenty-seven years. He has served as a teacher of Social Studies, Assistant Principal, High School Principal and Assistant Superintendent for business. He currently serves as adjunct lecturer for the Stony Brook University’s School of Professional Development in the Department of Educational Administration and as an adjunct Associate Professor in the doctoral program for the Department of Educational Leadership and Accountability at St. John’s University.

Similarly, extreme disorganization to the point that a student cannot keep track of important assignments or homework is a bigger sign of problems to come. Trouble sign #5: Your child procrastinates. Some students are chronic procrastinators while others procrastinate when they dread the work ahead of them. If your child almost always puts off studying or homework until the last minute, start paying attention to the reasons. Is he or she avoiding doing so because the work is overly difficult? Does he or she only procrastinate with a particular subject? As a parent, it is important to take notice of potential

Without a doubt, some academic problems are easier to spot than others. Perhaps you’ve noticed a change in your child’s demeanor, but you’re unsure what exactly is going on. What are some of the most obvious - and less obvious - red flags that may indicate that your child is having a bigger school problem? Here are several academic trouble signs to watch for: Trouble sign #1: Your child is acting out. If your child has recently become defiant, angry or frustrated , there may be a direct correlation to something happening at school. Talk with your child and listen without judging. If your child will not talk with you, talk to the teacher about his or her observations and recommendations. Often, as school becomes difficult for a child, his or her self-esteem, confidence and happiness also suffer. Trouble sign #2: Homework takes longer than it should--or not long enough. If your child takes more time to complete his or her work than seems reasonable, he or she may be experiencing one or more problems. It may be that he or she is not grasping concepts as they are taught in the classroom and therefore cannot do his or her homework independently. It’s possible that your child has difficulty concentrating. On the other end of the spectrum, if your child zips through homework too quickly, skipping problems and failing to check his or her work, he or she may not understand the purpose and importance - of homework. Trouble sign #3: Your child struggles with reading. Reading trouble signs can vary and some are more noticeable. If you observe your child struggling to pronounce words correctly (or sound them out) or having similar issues, or if you see your child frequently skipping or guessing at words he or she does not know, talk with the teacher right away. Together, you can determine how to prevent your child from falling behind as reading becomes more challenging - and a bigger part of all assignments. Trouble sign #4: Your child’s work is sloppy. Most children need to constantly work on organization, so don’t panic if your child’s backpack or desk isn’t as neat as it could be. However, if your child’s work is

A local resident did some spring cleaning and decided to donate new school supplies that she had been saving to Legislator Lynne C. Nowick’s school supply drive. Legislator Nowick contacted the Smithtown Emergency Food Pantry and they responded that they could use them for the residents they serve. Legislator Nowick brought over boxes of notebooks, crayons, school bags,
folders, pencils, etc. The Smithtown Emergency Food Panty is housed at the St. Thomas of Canterbury Church in Smithtown at 90 Edgewood Avenue. It is open Monday – Friday from 9 a.m. until 12noon. It has been in existence for more than 28 years and is supported by donations from the community, as well as the parishioners of seven churches (Byzantine Church of
the Resurrection, First Presbyterian Church of Smithtown, St. Andrews Lutheran, St. James Episcopal, St. James Lutheran, St. Thomas of Canterbury and Smithtown United Methodist), who donate food and other nonperishables. Volunteers from these seven churches are assigned a month in which to operate and staff the Food Pantry.

Usdan Center Happenings Usdan Center for the Creative and Performing Arts, the nationally renowned summer arts day camp now entering its 46th season, has openings in some of the new programs being introduced this summer. Registration also continues for Usdan’s new 3-week program that begins on July 22nd. Among the program still available are: Technical Theatre – a special one-on-one program in the Theatre Department, where 10th
to 12th grade high school students with some experience work with designers and technicians, and they also study set construction and stage management. Jazz and Tap Dance Intensive: a preprofessional program for advanced students in the 7th to 12th grades, featuring a full day of study. Final audition coming up in early June. Studio Art – advanced work in two and three dimensions, for 5th to 12th
grades. Drawing, ceramics, sculpture, printmaking and other forms. Volunteers Needed It is hard to believe another summer is about to begin, and the Muscular Dystrophy Association is busy preparing for a fun and exciting camp season! The MDA is searching for men who are looking for a rewarding and memorable experience this summer to join their summer camp. Volunteer counselors are needed to assist young people with muscle
diseases and help them enjoy a fun-filled, carefree week at MDA summer camp, which will take place from August 10th to August 16th at Camp DeWolfe in Wading River. Applicants must be at least 18 years old, US Citizens and able to lift and care for a young person between the ages of six and 17. As a volunteer counselor, one will have
the opportunity to become a close companion to a camper affected by muscle disease and help them with daily activities such at eating, bathing and dressing. Counselors will also assist campers with recreational activities such as adapted sports, swimming and arts and crafts.

Last Hope Animal Rescue & Rehabilitation, Inc. is thrilled to announce that it has received a $5,000 grant from the ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) to fund Last Hope’s “FixA-Feral” program, which offers financial assistance to the Long Island public to spay/neuter feral cats. This program aids in alleviating the tremendous feral cat overpopulation problem as this discount incentive also enables the public to afford to help more cats. In 2003, Last Hope initiated its “Fix-A-Feral” voucher system, which provides assistance to the public with the cost of spay/neuter and vaccines for feral cats by reducing the price at participating veterinary clinics. Voucher users must agree to participate in the TNR ( Tr a p / N e u t e r / R e t u r n ) program, whereby the cats are returned (if not tame) to the location where they were trapped; and then commit to feeding, and providing shelter for the cats.
Last Hope’s “Fix-A-Feral” program is geared to both seasoned cat caregivers as well as beginners who may only care for a handful of cats. Last Hope also lends out humane “Have a Heart” traps. “Fix-A-Feral” has subsidized the spaying and neutering of over 12,000 cats since it began ten years ago. “In the past, we have spent significant time planning fundraisers to support Last Hope’s “FixA-Feral” initiative,” said Linda Stuurman, president of Last Hope. “We hold a luncheon, a raffle and rely on donations from a generous corporate sponsor to fund our vouchers, but the number of feral cats on Long Island is immense and the requests for help are increasing. We begin issuing program vouchers in March to coincide with kitten season, and usually run out of funds by midNovember. We simply do not have enough money to keep them available all year. It is heartbreaking not to be able to assist every caller pleading for
help, as well as every feral or cat colony that surfaces on Last Hope’s radar.” The generous grant from the ASPCA will aid in the distribution of vouchers for the “Fix-A-Feral” program to last for the entire year. At the height of kitten season, the time of year when shelters are most inundated with mother cats and kittens, the Last Hope cat hotline averages 50 calls a day. TNR is about population control and quality of life for feral cats. In an ideal world, all cats would have human contact and be socialized early in life so they can find loving homes. With Last Hope’s “Fix-A-Feral” program, fewer cats will be born into feral colonies, reducing the number of cats roaming Long Island streets and ending up in shelters. The ASPCA is helping Last Hope to accomplish this compassionate goal on Long Island.

Running For Awareness
On June 1st, Judy’s Run for Stroke Awareness held their 6th Annual Run for Stroke Awareness and Prevention at Sunken Meadow State Park. Legislator John M. Kennedy, Jr., Minority Leader of the Suffolk County Legislature, and Bob Zebrowski, the organizer of Judy’s Run lit the lights at the the H. Lee Dennison Executive Office Building with a purple glow to commemorate National Stroke Awareness Month, further public awareness of strokes and its effect on stroke victims, their families and friends as well as bringing attention to the 6th Annual Judy’s Run for Stroke Awareness and Prevention. This year Judy’s Run
attracted over 150 participants, bettering the record set at last year’s event which had been the highest number of runners in the history of the event. In addition to the runners running to raise awareness and funds towards Stroke Awareness, the event attracted many health professionals who were on site to offer aid as well as to take the blood pressure and vitals of the participants. Further, even more volunteers were on hand to give information out to educate the public about stroke awareness and the crippling effect it has on stroke victims and their families. Stroke awareness remains mostly hidden out of the mainstream,
neglected by the major fundraising events and ignored by the media. The effort to raise stroke awareness, to educate and to prevent is a massive undertaking. However, until America becomes comfortable with the idea of preventing strokes and are willing to talk about it, to acknowledge its toll on this country and families, Stroke Prevention will remain in the shadows. What Is Crew? in boats dubbed “Shells,” can either be solo or in groups of 2, 4 or 8. I am on a boat consisting of eight, who have been rowing together for St. John the Baptist DHS in West Islip for three years, with friendship being a crucial factor to success. A few weekends ago, my boat competed at the Long Island Championships, held in Oyster Bay. Larger boats are allotted a coxswain, whose job is quite complex. This lightweight coxswain must steer the boat, as well as motivate his crew and, ultimately, win the race. He is truly the core of a first-class boat. Rowers either scull or sweep, with the former using two smaller oars, one in each hand. A sweep rower is almost always in a larger
boat, with the exception being a pair. A sweep rower has one oar and must maintain balance, while still ensuring textbook technique and absolute power. As a rower, I can truly appreciate the physical strength and endurance that an athlete partaking in this sport must command. Most rowers train both on a rowing machine and on the water 5-7 days a week and are extremely dedicated to the pursuit of a gold medal. For the countless hours an athlete puts in throughout the year, he or she is rewarded with less than 10 races, each consisting of less than 6 minutes. It takes a focused mindset to be a rower, but if you can handle the sport, the benefits are endless.

HAPPILY EVER AFTER
“Your Gildersleeve is my Roger” the words were barely audible through tears and cries of Roger’s name. After having been missing for more than a year from Lindenhurst and turning up on Route 110 in Amityville, Roger, an almost 11 year-old cat was on his way home thanks to a little good fortune and the help of South Bay’s Neighbor Pet’s Place. Charlene Brass recognized her long lost cat’s photo in the April 16th
issue of the paper the day the Babylon Shelter photo was published. This photo was definitely her cat, Roger, who had disappeared in March 2012. Charlene looked for Roger for months and visited the shelter several times searching for him. Lost pet reunions like this, especially cat reunions, only happen once or twice a year; yet, each time one does, it reminds distraught owners never to give up hope.
