ROTARY AWARDS - On Thursday, May 15th, Smithtown High School students were honored at the Rotary Awards Ceremony held at Smithtown HS East. Reward recipients were chosen by their guidance counselors for making significant personal improvements or overcoming significant adversity. Last night, I had the privilege of attending the annual Press Club of Long Island Media Awards, held at the Woodbury Country Club, honoring the best and the brightest of Long Island’s Journalists. This is the one night each year when we, as members of the press, have the opportunity to recognize fellow protectors of the First Amendment and to mix and mingle with those we admire from afar, on the pages of the weekly and daily newspapers, the

magazines and blogs, over the broadcast airwaves… but rarely have the opportunity to personally acknowledge. This year, as an added bonus, PCLI honored past Outstanding Journalists as part of their initial class of Hall of Fame inductees. To see these giants of the industry assembled before a crowd of their peers was easily the highlight of an evening that had many memorable moments. It is nights like this that remind me why I chose to go into the field of Journalism to begin

with, to pursue a career that many seem to frown upon, for considerably less money than other, far less impactful, careers. Crazy, right? Not when you step back and take stock of a crowd like that, on a night like that, and realize that, yes, it’s all worth it. Congratulations to all the winners, once again. I can only hope that, one day, I will be fortunate enough to stand among you. ‘Til then, I consider myself extremely lucky to be a mere observer, soaking in the inspiration from those who have come before me.

weekly through Friday, August 29th (daily drop in is also available). Camp will take place at 44 Meadow Way in East Hampton and will begin every weekday at 9 a.m. and run until 2:30 p.m. for full day or 1 p.m. for half day option. The Bulldog Ball Club has been a leader in New York City for teaching baseball to youth baseball players for over 10 years. The organization provides

The United Way of Long Island (UWLI) has awarded a grant of $20,000 to Family Service League (FSL) under its Military Family Assistance Project community initiative. This grant will address the immediate financial needs of Long Island’s post-9/11 military families. These funds are used to help military families with a range of immediate financial needs, such as child care expenses, auto repairs and moving expenses. This weekend, I am competing in the National Championship for rowing. As the culmination of four years of hard work, this regatta marks the end of my rowing career. Although I started as a very poor athlete, I grew to love the sport. Now, I’m representing St. John the Baptist in the Varsity Quad, along with three of my best friends. I’m also competing in the Varsity Pair. This year proved to be one of the most productive in recent years, as we have six boats competing in this national championship. With so many entries, I believe we have put St. John’s on the map, as a force to be reckoned with

in the realm of high school crew. With any luck, some of our boats can bring home some hardware, as we build a dynasty that will continue for future athletes. When I entered as a freshman, my team was mediocre. Now, as I leave, my team is outstanding. The hard work put in by both the athletes and the coaches, combined with significant involvement from the parents, helped to solidify SJB as a force both on the water and in training. I like to think that I have made a positive difference on this team - and maybe I have - but the opportunity to compete on the highest stage available was earned

by hard work on the part of the entire team. Perhaps our impressive year will lead to advances in the future. With any luck, our bid for a national title ends in a medal. Even if it does not, I can honestly say that my four years as a St. John’s rower have left me a better athlete and a better person. This team has left an imprint on me that will last forever. I will never forget my coaches, my teammates or the memories we’ve formed along the way. I started the season as a substitute, and now I’m on a boat, rowing toward a national championship, with a group of friends I would not trade for the world.

There are many families within our community coping with Alzheimer’s and the challenges it presents,” says William Kent, Director of Long Island Hearing.“ At Long Island Hearing, we want to help ensure that the hearing health of those in our community with Alzheimer’s is appropriately managed. Hearing loss, when left unaddressed, can compound the difficulties that people with Alzheimer’s and their families already face, however in many cases, the appropriate use of hearing aids can benefit people with Alzheimer’s.” There is strong evidence that hearing impairment contributes to the progression of cognitive dysfunction in older adults. Unmanaged hearing loss can interrupt the cognitive processing of spoken language and sound, regardless of other

coexisting conditions. But when an individual has both Alzheimer’s and hearing loss, many of the symptoms of hearing loss can interact with those common to Alzheimer’s, making the disease more difficult than it might be if the hearing loss had been addressed. Studies have shown that although a significantly higher percentage of people with Alzheimer’s disease may have hearing loss than their normally aging peers, they are much less likely to receive attention for their hearing needs. “A comprehensive hearing assessment should be part of any Alzheimer’s diagnosis and any hearing loss should be addressed,” says Kent. “By addressing the hearing loss, we can help improve quality-oflife for those who have Alzheimer’s and help them live as fully as possible.” Numerous studies have linked untreated

hearing loss to a wide range of physical and emotional conditions, including impaired memory and ability to learn new tasks, reduced alertness, increased risk to personal safety, irritability, negativism, anger, fatigue, tension, stress, depression, and diminished psychological and overall health. Long Island Hearing is urging caregivers of people with Alzheimer’s to also address their own hearing health—recognizing the negative impact that untreated hearing loss can have on their own quality of life and emotional well-being. Poster Contest Winners approval from the Suffolk County Legislature to launch a new bullying awareness website. The site will provide support and guidance for children who are or have been bullied. The site will launch in September 2014. “When it comes to bullying, it’s all about speaking up,” said Anker. “Cyber-bullying has increased dramatically over the past several years, and the county will have the opportunity to assist by providing valuable resources to those who need support. I’m looking forward to

facilitating the website to help prevent the emotional scars that bullying can leave behind.” As of July 1st, 2012, the New York State Dignity Act mandates that all schools must designate a point person, known as a Dignity Act Coordinator (DAC), to assist students who feel that they are being bullied. To assist school districts in meeting this mandate, the Suffolk County Dept. of Health Services Office of Health Education has developed and implemented an 8 to 14 session peer education program entitled: “Healthy

Communication and Bullying Prevention.” The main goal of the program is to teach students how to stand up for someone being bullied rather than standing by passively. The purpose is to create “Up-stander Empathy from Bystander Apathy.” The result is that students are trained how to respond to aggression and how to stand up for those targeted, and then go into the classes and teach what they know. Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone commended winners of an Anti-cyberbullying Art Contest at a ceremony on Friday, May 30th. “We all need to be part of the solution to ending the harm caused by cyber-bullying,” the County Executive said. “Bullying does not discriminate. It affects children on all socioeconomic levels, ages and ethnicities and its effects can be devastating, ranging from damaging a person’s self-esteem to substance abuse to causing physical harm, up to and including suicide. We are taking a step toward eliminating this problem by honoring students who are fighting to end it through their artwork.” The County Executive noted that in the United States alone, an estimated 160,000 children miss school every day due to fear of attack or intimidation by their peers. One in 7 students in Grades K-12 is either a bully or a victim of bullying. Statistics also show that 56% of students have personally witnessed some type of bullying at school. The Suffolk County Office of Human Services sponsored the poster contest and disseminated guidelines for submission to all schools within Suffolk County. “We were extremely pleased with the response to the Anti-Cyberbullying Poster Contest,” said Roderick A. Pearson-Executive Director of the office of Human Services. “We thank the teachers and administrators for encouraging their students to participate and we thank all of the students for their submissions. Commack Middle School’s math team took second place in the Suffolk County Math Tournament on May 27th, hosted by the Director of the Center for Science and Mathematics Education at SUNY Stony Brook. Riley Bode, a sixth grade student from Commack Middle School, placed first in County. Riley was the only participant with a perfect score. The Suffolk County Elementary Math Tournament is a competition for fourth through sixth-grade students representing school districts throughout Suffolk County. Organized and directed by local elementary math specialists, this

competition is supported by the Suffolk County Math Teachers’ Association. The competition challenged students to answer higherlevel and multi-step math problems in both individual and team events. Sixth grade students from Commack Middle School and fourth and fifth grade students from Mandracchia-Sawmill Intermediate School and Burr Intermediate School participated in this year’s competition. Participants were chosen based on their performance in the Math Olympiads Club (middle school) and Continental Mathematics League (grades four and five). Each school sent a team of five students per grade level.

ANTIBULLYING CAMPAIGN - Smithtown High School East Junior, Andrew Byrus, created and submitted a poster for the Suffolk County Anti-Cyberbullying Campaign. Andrew’s entry was selected as the High School, First Place winner in this campaign run by the Suffolk County Youth Bureau and the Child Abuse Prevention Services (CAPS). His poster will be displayed in the lobby of the County Executive’s office at the H. Lee Denison Building during the month of October, 2014. October is Bully Prevention Month.

Businesses that partner with education are an important part of the authentic learning process in the Commack School District. An initiative that began in 2003, the Commack School Business Partnership strives to provide Commack students with the knowledge and experiences that they will need to be successful in their chosen professions. This year, members of the Partnership were on hand at the high school’s annual College and Career Fair, answering questions about their chosen professions as students and their parents talked to admission counselors from potential colleges. Lawyers, physical therapists, financial advisors, bankers, technology specialists, and the armed forces, to name a few, shared their knowledge and experience. Many students found their assistance invaluable in choosing a future course

of study. Commack’s School Business Partnership now has 800 plus members. “We are expanding regionally each year,” said Paul R. Infante, Director of Fine and Applied Art, and the founder of the partnership. “Our members are extremely helpful in assisting our students; opening doors for internships and jobs for our youth as the students investigate possible career choices.” Commack’s ICA Jazz Ensemble performed at the opening of the community’s new LOWE’s store. Two students, Abrey Feliccia and HongJoo Ahn, had approached science teacher Ryan McGrath about the possibility of starting an organic garden in the high school courtyard in order to grow vegetables to donate to local food pantries. “That spring (2013), we built our first garden bed in

the courtyard with the help of the Long Island Community Agricultural Network and planted our first plants. Future Stars Shine Legislator John M. Kennedy, Jr. honored three of the brightest young minds in Suffolk County yesterday during the General Session of the Suffolk County Legislature. These young people all were winners in this year’s Brookhaven National Laboratory Science Fair. Grant Faber, a third grader from Forest Brook Elementary School in Hauppauge School won for his project entitled, “Practice, Practice, Practice,” which tested the age old adage, “practice makes perfect,” while fifth grader, Hannah Fioramonti from Pines Elementary School also in Hauppauge, won for her project “Hot and Cold Melodies,” that tested how temperature affects the intonation of an orchestra’s pitch. Hannah placed orchestral instruments in rooms at different temperatures and noted how the pitch was affected in each environment which led to her discovery that temperature affects each instrument differently. This is Hannah’s third time winning first place at the Brookhaven National Laboratory Elementary Science Fair, as she had previously won first place while in the second and then

again in third grade. She is the only girl to win first place three times. Grant’s science fair project tested how daily practice of five minutes a day affected both academics and athletics

The CSI Challenge, an annual inquiry-based crime scene investigation competition in which teams of students vie to solve a murder mystery scenario using scientific and forensic skills, has delivered the “Detective’s Cup,” to the team from Smithtown East! Thirteen students mentored by advisor Maria Zeitlin earned the coveted cup. Students work collaboratively under high-pressure time constraints to process a fictitious crime scene, and investigate the latent evidence left behind by one or more “perps.” Students first have a chance to acquaint themselves with the characters of the story when the story, written by CSI Challenge creator Dave Tricamo, is released two weeks prior to the event. Students prepare their forensic and scientific skills for a full year in anticipation of the Challenge, then ramp up their focus once the scenario is released. Mr. Tricamo has been writing his own suspense-driven murder scenarios for fourteen years. His creative stories introduce varying themes and characters, but always involve the sleuth abilities of Detective C. Gar Butz.

Island Harvest Food Bank, Long Island’s largest hunger relief organization, today announced that it collected 326,365 pounds of food as part of the Stamp Out Hunger campaign held on Saturday, May 10th. Stamp Out Hunger is the nation’s largest singleday food drive, an annual event in association with the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC), United States Postal Service and food banks across the country. Locally, all proceeds benefit Island Harvest in supporting more than

300,000 Long Islanders — including 110,000 children — who face the risk of going hungry every day. This year’s collection of 326,365 pounds of food from across Long Island is equal to 271,970 meals for those struggling with hunger. “Island Harvest is pleased to see so many of our neighbors here on Long Island who stepped up and generously donated 326,365 pounds of food for those who often don’t have enough food to maintain a healthy life,” said Randi Shubin Dresner, president
