Angels Revisited And now, a selection from the archives, published June 2008... This past Memorial Day weekend, the Navy’s Blue Angels returned to the Island for their annual turn as one of the Jones Beach Air Show’s featured attractions. Even though it’s just a short drive down Ocean Parkway, my family and I have never managed to get out there to witness the spectacle up close and in person. Too much traffic, too many people, too much of a hassle… This year, though, I realized that the planes would be practicing right around the corner at Republic Airport during the week leading up to the show. And so, on Friday afternoon, a friend and I made a point of taking a ride down to the Airport Plaza shopping center to see if we could catch a glimpse. A glimpse? Try witnessing all six of the planes whizzing overhead and whoknows-what speed, close enough so that we could read the numbers on them! What a sight!

If only I had my camera, I thought. Well, after that close call, I decided to make it my mission to get a shot of them flying to or from the air show over the weekend, since I knew they would cross over my house on their flight down to the beach. Saturday afternoon, as I heard them approach, I ran out with my camera – only to catch the cloud of dust they had left in their wake. Okay, I thought, I’ll just wait here on the deck – listening to the simulcast on the radio – until I hear them wrapping up their routine. Then, all I have to do is aim my camera for the sky and I can’t miss them! Easier said than done. I saw them coming, all right. The problem was it’s a little hard to frame something moving at hundreds of miles an hour in your camera lens before it’s passed you by. I managed to snap one shot as they approached, which, after the camera’s natural delay, resulted in a rather fuzzy shot of the planes whizzing right out of the frame. There’s always tomorrow, I thought. The next morning, I drove

down to the local town beach and waited, poised for the approach. Sure enough, I saw the HC-130 slowly making its way south, a sure sign that the six Blue Angels were not far behind. And then… out of the clouds they came – all six, flying in perfect formation. And again, I was only able to get just one shot before I lost track of the formation. I followed their flight into the distance, where I was actually able to view most of the theatrics which followed, albeit from a great distance. I imagine it was much better up close, but hey – not a bad seat on my beach either! I must have stood there for a solid 30 minutes, watching the back and forth, up and down, looping motion of the jets, until at last, they began their return trip to Republic. This time, I got it. One...two… three shots as they came closer and closer – still a little blurred, but sharp against the clear blue sky. Finally! As they flew off into the distance, I heard one bystander mumble, “There they go – our tax dollars at work.” But she was smiling.

Some 190 golfers teed off to benefit the Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation during the 19th Annual Golf Classic and Tennis Tournament, held on May 16th, at the Glen Oaks Club in Old Westbury. The event, which has been sponsored by Astoria Federal Savings Bank for the past 19 years, raised $265,000 for the hospital’s neurosciences and honored Kevin J. Mullins, MD, FAANS, FACS, Chief of Neurosurgery and Director of Neurosurgical Services. Dr. Mullins is a board certified neurosurgeon and founder of Long Island Neurosurgical & Pain Specialists. Suffolk Federal recently honored North Babylon High School students who completed the Suffolk Federal Scholars Program, a web-based education program which supports financial education at schools throughout Suffolk County. Suffolk Federal

partners with EverFi, Inc. to bring this interactive financial management program to participating local high school students at no cost to the schools or taxpayers. The students received certificates during an exciting ceremony at

the high school. “These students are our future generation. The more we can do to help them grow and prosper, the more our country will benefit,” explained William J. O’Brien, Suffolk Federal’s President and CEO. “Suffolk Federal is proud

to partner with EverFi to bring financial education to local students, to prepare each one of them for a sound financial future and to shine a light on the importance of financial literacy.” The 10-unit course includes over six hours of programming covering a variety of financial topics such as savings, investments, credit cards, and student loans and other critical financial literacy concepts. Through the platform, students became certified in several topics related to personal finance, allowing them to become more informed and responsible citizens. The program uses the latest in new media technology - simulations, avatars and gaming - to bring complex financial concepts to life for today’s digital generation. In 2015, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB)

highlighted EverFi’s schools-based financial education programs in a report on Advancing K-12 Financial Education: A Guide for Policymakers. According to Samin Alam, a junior at the high school, “The Suffolk Federal Scholars Program allows students to focus on the financial aspects of not only getting through college, but the distant future. This program has comprehensively prepared me for what the future has to offer and also educated me on several topics in which I had little to no knowledge beforehand,” he added. “Our goal as educators is to prepare our students for a successful future, a job which often extends beyond a typical classroom,” said Maria DelVecchio, Business Teacher at North Babylon High School. “Partnerships across school districts and private sector institutions

allow educators to provide important educational supplements, such as the Suffolk Federal Scholars Program, and enable us to provide our children the best possible opportunity to reach their full potential.” “By partnering with wonderful teachers whose passion is to enrich the lives of their students, the Suffolk Federal Scholars Program helps students gain the critical skills necessary to make them successful for the rest of their lives,” said EverFi Founder and CEO Tom Davidson. “We are striving to create a world with fewer bankruptcies, fewer people defaulting on their student loans, and more people who feel in control of their financial future. Bulls Meet Turtles Smithtown High School East’s Alternative Arts and Animation Club attended the New York City premiere of “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows” at Madison Square Garden on May 22nd. Smithtown High School East students were also invited to attend the red

Members of the Student Council at Branch Brook Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District were recently presented with certificates for their community service efforts this school year. Some of the Student Council’s activities

included a visit to the Nesconset Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation; participation in “Heavenly Hats” where the students paid $1 to wear a hat to school and used the money raised to purchase hats for cancer patients; “Change for Children” to raise money for Stony

carpet event, where they met some of the actors, producers and cast of the film. Students watched the actors conduct interviews before the movie premiere with several television, Internet and radio stations. Some students even had the opportunity to meet and take photos with the celebrities.

Club members watched the film with the cast, crew and other fans. The audience was even surprised by a guest appearance of Vanilla Ice and the four Ninja Turtles, who gave a mini concert to the fans before the screening commenced.

Smithtown Central School District’s social studies department held its annual Senior Awards Night on May 24th. More than 40 students from Smithtown High School East and Smithtown High School West were honored

for their achievement in specific academic subjects, for general excellence in the social sciences and international studies, and for their extensive community service. Several awards were given on behalf of state and

local government officials, and three students were presented with Congressional Recognition Awards for their community service and academic achievement.

Photo courtesy of: Smithtown Central School District Bretton Woods Elementary School students in Phoebe Czachor’s second grade class learned an eyeopening lesson about childhood poverty in America when they participated in Red Nose Day on May 26th. “I taught the children at their level of understanding what childhood poverty is and demonstrated that 1 in

4 children in this country do not have a snack or even dinner every night like they are fortunate enough to have,” described Czachor. “Their reaction was eye opening.” Student parent Deily Wells provided the red noses, red sunglasses and red headbands for the Red Nose Day classroom activities. Red Nose Day launched in the U.S. in 2015 as

a special day to come together, have fun and make a difference for kids who are most in need. In its inaugural year in America, more than $23 million was raised for the Red Nose Day Fund, with the money now at work in all 50 states across America and 15 countries internationally through programs to keep children and young people safe, healthy and educated.

The Hauppauge School District Board of Education yesterday appointed Dr. Dennis P. O’Hara to serve as superintendent of schools effective July 1st, 2016. O’Hara will replace Neil Lederer who has served with strong and experienced leadership as the District’s interim superintendent of schools since January 2016. “Dr. O’Hara was chosen from a highly qualified field of impressive candidates,” stated David Barshay, Esq., Hauppauge Board of Education president. “We commend the comprehensive efforts of the Superintendent’s Search Committee, which was comprised of District administrators, teachers, parents and Board members. We thank them for their service and believe that we could not have selected a better candidate for our District’s new superintendent of schools.” A resident of Farmingville, New York, O’Hara brings a

wealth of teaching and administrative experience and leadership skills to the Hauppauge School District – from both the secondary education and the collegiate levels. He most recently served as principal of Oyster Bay High School and as an adjunct professor at St. John’s University, School of Education. He also previously was a member of the Hauppauge School District community – serving as Hauppauge High School assistant principal and as Science Department chairman – from 1998 to 2003. According to O’Hara, the people of the Hauppauge School District community changed his life. “From my first day in the District in July of 1998, my learning and career took on a new, and never-before imagined, trajectory,” he stated. “Eighteen years later, I feel prepared for this leadership opportunity, and I am eager to return to Hauppauge to repay a debt of gratitude and to give back to the community that has had a profound effect on my career and life.” O’Hara received a Doctor of Education from the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education, a Professional Diploma in Educational Administration from Dowling College School of Education, a Master of Science in Technological Systems Management from SUNY at Stony Brook School of Engineering,
