The Garden consists of 23 raised beds of organically grown veggies and herbs, as well as berry bushes, grape vines and more. The produce from their Garden provides lunches for the adults in their programs and helps them stock Charlotte’s Table Food Pantry, which offers community members in need fresh and healthy options. The Association for Mental Health and Wellness (MHAW) is a non-profit behavioral healthcare organization here on Long Island. They serve more than 3,000 clients each year among 33 diverse communities throughout Suffolk County at four sites. Two of these sites are based in Ronkonkoma, one is based in Riverhead and the last is based in Yaphank. This Association was formed in 2014 with the merger of three successful organizations in Suffolk County. Those organizations are the Mental Health Association in Suffolk County, Clubhouse of Suffolk and Suffolk County United Veterans. The Association for Mental Health and Wellness works vigorously to provide a comprehensive range of personcentered recovery and wellness-driven programming for adults who are affected by psychiatric disabilities, trauma and complex health conditions. They run the following programs and services: The NYS-Funded Personalized RecoveryOriented Services, Health Home Care Management Services for Children and Adults, Peer Recovery Oriented Services, Supported Housing for Those Diagnosed with a Mental Illness, Mental Health Helpline, Community Health Education, Support Groups and Behavioral Health Home and Community Based Services. They also operate an organic garden and multiple food pantries! Jack Youngs, president of the historical society, said, “To have the first newspaper that was printed on Long Island is what many locals proudly say is ‘A Feather in Our Cap.’ We had a newspaper eight years before Brooklyn.“ David Frothingham married Nancy Pell, a descendent of the prominent Pell family of Westchester. Several years later Frothingham became entangled in a claim of slander by Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton. The claim under the terms of the Alien and Sedition Acts stemmed from an article published in a Brooklyn newspaper, the Argus. Frothingham was found guilty and a fine of $100 was imposed, which a friend of his from Bridgehampton paid. A bond of $2,500 was set

A historical marker honoring the publisher of Long Island's first newspaper will be unveiled in Sag Harbor on June 6th. The marker will commemorate David Frothingham, who published Frothingham’s Long-Island Herald from 1791 to 1796. The marker on Main Street is sponsored by the Press Club of Long Island, which collaborated with the Sag Harbor Historical Society on the project. The marker is being installed by the Village of Sag Harbor. The dedication ceremony will be held across the street from the historical society office at 174 Main Street at 1 p.m. The marker is being installed in front of the property where Frothingham published the weekly newspaper. Chris R. Vaccaro, president of the press club, the local chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists, said, "Over the last few years the press club has worked hard to recognize places of

BROADWAY COMES TO BABYLON: The Argyle Theatre

For several years, the movie theater on Main Street in Babylon Village sat with its glasspaned doors papered over with posters from its final showings, grimly pinpointing the exact moment in time those doors had shut. Last month, those posters came down, and the doors opened to Long Island’s newest and largest year-round professional equity theatre, bringing new light and color to the classic streets of Babylon Village as the stunning Argyle Theatre. Hauppauge Resident Honored Farmingdale State College recently honored a number of long-time faculty and staff, and those who have retired after long years of service to the institution. Hauppauge resident Donna Scarallo has been recognized by Farmingdale

State College for 24 years of service. Scarallo served as associate professor in the LIEOC Business Careers and Technology department. A devoted employee, she enjoyed working with students and was a mentor to many.

She was assistant dean of the LIEOC for more than seven years and chair of the Business Careers and Technology department at the same time. Scarallo is an avid traveler. Her goal is to travel throughout Europe, and she enjoys tennis, walking and hiking.

with Jamie Lynn Ryan Another month has come and gone, and here we are, hurtling toward “summer” through the rain and fog of spring. The school year is drawing to a close, vacation plans are in the works, and everyone seems in desperate need of some sort of reprieve from the daily grind. I recently took a vacation day to bookend the Memorial Day weekend, creating a four-day spread of time to decompress and reset. My mission was to fill every moment with something either enjoyable or productive, a noble pursuit if ever there was one, however unrealistic it might be. The trouble with sustaining that type of schedule, even when it revolves around leisure activities, is the inevitable downward spiral into exhaustion. Being productive is hard work. And with that, the many lists of things to accomplish, some

carried over from just prior to the new year, remain. Sure, a few items have made their way into the “done” column; but mostly, the main bullet points stare back from the page, some expanded upon and added to as the months have progressed. The fact is, there is always more work to be done, always some aspect of life to improve upon, an avenue of growth to explore. Summer, for all its heat and humidity, has always been the season for such exploration to me, in the most literal of senses. From long walks into the uninhabited neighborhoods of Fire Island, to stumbling upon tiny treasures of sand and foliage along the shores that we call home, searching for that perfect photo op, that moment of tranquility when nature takes over and responsibilities vanish into the haze. The key, of course, is to take a piece - however small a slice - of that feeling, that

incomparable moment of zen, and carry it with you into the other elements of life. Find the beauty in everything, as they say. A flower, a butterfly, a sunrise, the ocean crashing along the shore… Perhaps we should dispense with our lists altogether. Who says what is written is more important than what is not? Maybe those “tasks” we have yet to document are the most crucial of all. It might just follow that all these selfimposed responsibilities do not hold nearly the significance we place on them. Those who appear to embody the greatest inner peace seem to glide through life without a care in the world - and what’s wrong with that? And so, we begin yet another month, a bit older and hopefully wiser as we set sail into summer. May the warmth of the sun radiate upon you. Eventually. Maybe by July.

Education Event NYCB LIVE, home of the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum recently partnered with National Grid to host a Memorial Day education event for 100 local students from Roosevelt Middle School at the Veterans Memorial located on the plaza of NYCB LIVE. With the support of local Long Island veterans and active duty military, the Roosevelt Middle School students had the opportunity to learn about the branches of the military and Long Island’s service contributions to the United States armed forces. The Memorial Day education event was a part of the venue’s new community platform NYCB LIVE Cares, which harnesses the power of sports and entertainment to make an impact in the Long Island community. “The Coliseum serves as

a symbol and pays tribute to those who have sacrificed so much for our country,” said Josh Pruss, Senior Vice President of Global Partnerships for Brooklyn Sports & Entertainment. “We are proud to work with National Grid on this important event. By introducing local youth to our veterans, we are able to keep their incredible stories alive and honor their commitment to our community and our country.” During the event, students had the opportunity to visit with the different branches of the military and learn more from active duty service members. Students also sat with local veterans to hear their stories and together created Memorial Day wreaths to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Groups participating in the event included Army

Memorial Day Tribute

To honor local military heroes this Memorial Day, Accompsett Middle School in the Smithtown Central School District organized its second annual Flags for Freedom program. Organized by the school’s Parent-Teacher Association and the National Junior Honor Society, participants

All I know is that dining out and choosing to be healthy have usually been difficult. The pressure of finding a good option and ultimately settling for something familiar has happened far too often. I enjoy eating my homemade Lean & Green meal (3 servings of vegetables and 5-7 ounces of a lean protein), but trying to find that type of meal while dining out has been challenging. Most fast food restaurants focus on convenience and not nutrition. Nutrition is key to living a healthy lifestyle, and it’s something that I have changed significantly since losing 110 lbs.

The fast food business is evolving, and more healthy choices are starting to become available. I had the pleasure of dining at a recently opened restaurant, CoreLife Eatery in Farmingdale, last week. They are focused on offering only the best foods and preparing them fresh on the spot. So many options to choose from - green bowls, grain bowls, broth bowls, freshly made beverages... the portions are hearty and satiating. You are able to make your own bowl or plate, choosing whichever fresh ingredients you prefer; you can also choose one of their creations from the menu, which can be customized as well. This place really appeals to me. I can choose all the components of my meal, and I know they are fresh, nutrient-dense ingredients, perfect for my needs. For my dining choice, I chose the Tuna Poke Fire Bowl. It comes with Ahi tuna

poke, avocado, pickled jalapeños, pickled red onions, pickled red cabbage, sesame Sriracha sprouts and forbidden purple rice ( I opted for romaine and spinach instead of the rice). I topped this meal with the suggested fire sauce and sesame ginger dressing. If you like heat, I highly recommend the fire sauce; it had an incredible flavor, as well as a nice touch of spice. It was an extremely tasty dish that left me satisfied. I really am looking forward to my next meal at CoreLife Eatery. It truly is the next step in the evolution of dining. Kaitlin Connelly of Smithtown has been named the recipient of the 2018 Anna Mae Massy Memorial Scholarship awarded by Municipal Credit Union (MCU). Kaitlin, who graduates from Hauppauge High School next month and plans to use her scholarship to attend Colgate University to study environmental science, received her scholarship from MCU Board Chair James Durrah and MCU Acting President/ CEO Norman Kohn at a special ceremony at MCU’s headquarters on May 23rd. Kaitlin is one of nine recipients of MCU’s 2018 memorial scholarships. This year, MCU awarded $71,000 in scholarships to college-bound graduating high school seniors: nine memorial scholarships of $5,000 each and 13 grants of $2,000 each. Eligibility for the MCU scholarships was open to an MCU member, a child, or a grandchild of a member in good standing. Selection was based on

Scouting Achievement Legislator Leslie Kennedy had the opportunity to honor Jared Paolillo for his Scouting achievements last weekend. Jared, through much hard work and dedication, has achieved the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest rank and honor bestowed upon a Scout by the Boy Scouts of America. Every Scout must complete a project that

benefits the community in order to earn the rank of Eagle Scout. Jared chose to improve upon the Biblical Garden at the St. James Lutheran Church, he replaced a patio and installed stone benches. Jared also extended a walkway in the garden. This garden is used by the community of faith as a place of reflection and prayer.

“I am immensely proud of Jared for his accomplishments,” Legislator Kennedy stated, “His Eagle Scout project was thoughtful and serves to benefit the faithful of St James Lutheran Church. I am confident that Jared will continue to succeed at anything he decides to take on.”

Q&U Unite It was a unity that was always meant to be for the letters Q and U. The kindergarten students at Tackan Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District celebrated the marriage of the two letters during a ceremony on May 25th. Invited guests, friends and family, as well as

all of the letters of the alphabet, came out to join the two letters as they officially tied the knot. Tackan Elementary School Principal Dr. Allyn Leeds served as the officiant. Since the beginning of the school year, the kindergartners have been learning the sounds that letters make together and

that letters, such as Q and U, appear together in most words. The kindergarten students performed a variety of songs, concluding with “Forever Young” to a slideshow of photos from their first year of school.

and learned how forensic science is used to solve crimes. The students analyzed a crime scene, identified objects found at the scene and used their observation skills to help solve a crime. During the hands-on portion of the program, the fifth-graders

Video Collaboration Smithtown High School East art teacher Tim Needles, along with six teachers from throughout the Smithtown Central School District, had their video art piece selected for inclusion in the Reimagining the Four Freedoms Exhibition. The exhibition runs from May 25th to September 2nd at the Franklin D. Roosevelt House in New York City. The exhibition is a modern interpretation of

Roosevelt’s Four Freedoms speech and it will be on tour for two years traveling to museums across America and France.
