Lacing up their sneakers for a good cause, the fourth and fifth grade members of the Cares Club at Mills Pond Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District held a walk-a-thon on May 8 outside their school. The annual fundraising event benefits Medical Mission International. Medical Mission is a hospital for the poverty-

stricken community in El Salvador. Mills Pond Cares Club advisers Diana Lanze, Kristin Quail and Melissa Taylor, along with Mills Pond teachers, led the students on 10 laps around the building after school with Principal Ireen Westrack cheering them on. The fundraiser garnered more than $2,160.

Don’t Pack This Pest (NAPSI)—If you’re moving to a new home this year, watch out for certain stowaways: gypsy moths. These insects are among the most destructive pests of trees and shrubs in America. Gorging themselves on leaves, gypsy moth caterpillars weaken and can kill more than 300 different species of trees. Since 1970, they’ve defoliated more than 75 million acres. The Answer That’s why the U.S. Department of Agriculture requires homeowners by law to inspect and remove gypsy moth egg masses from household goods prior to moving across state lines—and get an official certificate of inspection. What You Need To Do • Check all outdoor household goods— lawn furniture, grills, outdoor toys, camping equipment—for egg

masses. • Use a putty knife, stiff brush or similar hand tool to dispose of any egg masses you do find into a container of hot, soapy water, or place them in a plastic bag, seal it, and set it in the sun. To get the certificate, you can perform a selfinspection or hire a state-certified pesticide applicator. The American Moving and Storage Association says you should then give the inspection certificate to your moving van driver.

While speaking with Robyn, she shared a great story about a routine visit with her dental hygienist, Sue. Sue was explaining how arthritis was really becoming a problem in her hands. After a short discussion with Sue, Robyn challenged her to cut out all dairy for a month. After only a few days Sue called Robyn to share she was already having less pain and was now fully committed to making it through the dairy-free month. Through the month Sue made a few appointments with Robyn and made a few other small changes to her diet. Not long after that first month Sue’s arthritic pains were gone, she lost 30 pounds, reduced her bad cholesterol and her blood pressure normalized. All welcomed benefits but completely unexpected by Sue, although Robyn

Eighth graders at Accompsett Middle School in the Smithtown Central School District were hard at working selling their business plans during the food truck festival on May 22. As part of their family and consumer sciences class with Ms. Taylor Walsh, the students had to create their own ideas for a food truck. Each student then had to write a 30-second elevator pitch to get their fellow students to invest in their ideas. Students talked about their menu, plan for growth and how they would work to attract customers and cater to their specific market. The lesson gave students the opportunity to work on their public speaking and communication skills while also sparking their creativity. The students even sampled some of the food truck items before casting their vote on the best food truck idea.

FOOD DONATION - Eighth grade students from Great Hollow Middle School in the Smithtown Central School District are doing their best to help those in need in their community. With the help of the cafeteria staff, students have donated unused food items from the cafeteria to the Lighthouse Mission in Bellport. This small act of “DINOMAN” - Second grade scientists from Mt. Smithtown High School East juniors and ThINK Discovery Science Research students Kevin Chen and Alexa Knee were selected as one of five finalist teams in the Genes in Space Competition. As NASA prepares the journey back to the moon and to Mars, it continues to develop applications within the International Space Station for exploration of the effects of space exploration on humans. Chen and Knee responded to the question by posing their own experiments to explore the effects of life in space on DNA. Entries from across the country were reviewed for the Genes in Space Competition, and the Smithtown High School East team is now headed to Atlanta, Georgia, to present their experiment, “How will mitochondrial DNA repair mechanisms be impacted in microgravity such as found on the International Space Station?” The pair will be assigned a professional scientist from MIT or Harvard to develop the methods to execute their experiment. The winning team will be selected live at the International Space Station Conference in July. The winning project will then be launched next year so it can be conducted aboard the ISS. “Kevin and Alexa have developed a unique experiment for the ISS,” said Smithtown High School East science research coordinator Maria Zeitlin. “An opportunity to interact with members of the ISS community is humbling, and I am thrilled that the students will have this once in a lifetime experience to be able to attend the conference next July."

Poetry Café Gives Students Opportunity To Shine

GOLFER WINS COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP Smithtown High School West student Paige Diecidue took first place in the Suffolk County girls individual golf championship on May 21 at Middle Island Country Club. Diecidue was only a seventh grader when she first qualified for the Suffolk County girls golf championships in 2014. For the past five seasons, she has had her eyes set on capturing a county title. Diecidue took first place by shooting two over par 73 in the second round to finish with a 36 hole total of six over par 148, capturing the title for her sixth straight appearance. Surrounded by family and friends, the fifth graders at St. James Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District showed off their poetic side during a poetry café held in the old gym on May 9. Transforming the

gymnasium into a Parisian café – complete with bistro tables, dim lighting and cozy couches – the students took to the microphone one by one to read their poems. After each presentation, the students snapped in unison to applaud their classmates

as the bongo drummers ushered up the next poet to the stage. The poetry café gives students the opportunity to show off their writing abilities as well as work on their communication and public presentation skills.

New Ground’s JumpStart Program launched in 2012 to expand these critical services to additional homeless families on their wait-list for the Long Term Housing Program. This Program is open to any homeless families, not just Veterans, and is intended to give families a jump-start on accomplishing their goals. When these families later transition into the Long Term Housing Program, they are well on their way toward realizing the steps needed to secure an independent future. A primary social worker is assigned to all families in both of these programs once they start with the organization. New Ground social

workers provide guidance, resources and assistance to the families in various areas. The New Ground Veterans Program is another very important part to their organization. Homeless Veterans can get placed in reduced cost housing and be provided with intensive social work and education services by New Ground to assist them with achieving goals in the areas of employment, financial literacy, education, career development, parenting, basic life skills, education advocacy and more. In 2016 their services were expanded so they can serve an even greater number of Veteran households. Through collaboration with the Northport VA Center, New Ground began offering their programs to over 400 homeless Veteran households in their Veteran Affairs Supportive Housing Program. Since opening their doors, New Ground has seen over 80% of the families they have served “graduate” from their programs self sufficient and into permanent stable housing. New Ground empowers children, parents and Veterans to achieve their goals so that they can secure a brighter future for generations to come! New Ground is a huge help to the homeless community on Long Island and is there for those in need. Their Long Term Housing Program combines affordable housing with New Ground’s intensive services. Currently this includes a home in Huntington with two homeless Veteran families, a home in Bethpage under renovations and plans to add more housing units. For 3-5 years, New Ground provides all the needed educational, vocational and counseling services to the family members living in this housing, as well as basic needs and general support. Residents also take time with a social worker and put together a plan of how they can reach their goals.
