A memorial service was held at the Suffolk County Correctional Facility in Riverside on May 24th to honor 64 of Suffolk’s Correction Officers and Deputy Sheriffs who died in service since 1887. The Annual Memorial

Service was hosted by the Sheriff’s Office, in conjunction with the Suffolk County Correction Officers Association and the Suffolk County Deputy Sheriffs P.B.A. It was attended by families of the deceased, law enforcement

officers, county officials and civilian personnel. Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota was the master of ceremonies. Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent DeMarco gave the Memorial Address.

Packing Science By: Jamie Lynn Ryan You wouldn’t think packing groceries into a shopping bag would require, I don’t know, a degree in rocket science – but apparently, this task is much more complex than it seems, causing me to leave the supermarket shaking my head in amazement almost every time. For starters, there is no need to shove about 40 pounds worth of merchandise into one bag – paper or plastic – that neither the cashier, nor I, nor any human being can possibly lift without developing a hernia. Secondly, placing two or three items in the same said bag is equally absurd. The contents of one shopping cart need not, under any circumstances, be divided among 17 bags, I can assure you. And then we have the arrangement of the items within the bags… Granted, I’ve never

worked in a grocery store and I’m not sure if there is some particular protocol for packing; however, I’m fairly certain that items like bread, eggs and produce should not be placed underneath bottles of soda, jars and cans. Just a hunch. The best part of it all is that, knowing this has been a recurring issue, I attempt to race through the checkout line, packing as many bags as humanly possible myself to avoid such problems. But inevitably, there always comes a point when the cashier feels the need to jump in – and downhill it all goes. I mean, you can clearly see the way I fit as much as possible, mixing heavy items on the bottom with the lighter ones on top. Again, not rocket science. Just common sense. But no sooner has the cashier grabbed a bag then it is promptly filled with three bottles of soda piled on top of a loaf of bread and some fruit and vegetables. You

didn’t want to actually eat that stuff, did you? Nah, not at all, keep piling it on. Better yet, why not put each item in its own bag? I’ve gotten to the point that I will stand there and rearrange the items into a more acceptable combination before leaving the store, then hand over the 5 or 6 leftover bags which I no longer need. Who cares if I’m holding up the line. Take the hint. Watch and learn. It’s really not difficult; it just requires a minimal effort, which shouldn’t be too much to ask. If it happened once, I could deal with it. Twice, I would be slightly irritated. But every time, every store, every cashier… is there a special training school for this sort of thing? And if so, what qualifies as a passing grade, not dropping anything? Guess we’ll leave that to the customer as they’re struggling with their 40-pound bag out to the car.

Taking the Hippocratic Oath for the first time as physicians, Stony Brook University School of Medicine’s Class of 2013 will launch their careers in medicine and begin residency training at institutions such as Columbia, Yale, Cornell, Duke, and Stony Brook Medicine in July. A packed house filled the Staller Center at Stony Brook University during the School’s 39th Convocation Ceremony to congratulate the 130 graduates – the largest graduating class to date. “Our graduates are entering the most honorable of all professions and one that poses a number of challenges – continuing to remain current with the explosive growth in our understanding of the origins of human health and disease, implementing the translation of that knowledge into better diagnoses and newer therapies for our patients, and changing practice patterns with the challenges presented by the failing fiscal health of healthcare,” said Kenneth Kaushansky, MD, MACP, Senior Vice President of the Health Sciences, and Dean, School of Medicine, addressing the Class of 2013. “Despite these challenges, I remain highly optimistic; Medicine always finds a way to move forward, to do better and to continue to positively impact the lives of our patients.” Leading cancer

researcher and keynote speaker, Michelle M. Le Beau, PhD, the Arthur and Marian Edelstein Professor of Medicine, and Director, University of Chicago Comprehensive Cancer Center, told the graduates to expect many opportunities during this “unprecedented period of growth in medicine and biomedical research.” “Your generation will reap the benefits of this new era of genomic and ‘personalized’ medicine, and as physicians you should embrace new technologies in your field, be ambitious and seize opportunities,” said Dr. Le Beau. “Today we turn to you to provide future answers in medicine with our goal always to improve the lives of others and relieve suffering.” During the traditional doctoral hooding ceremony, the candidates selected a faculty mentor, family member, friend, or other physician (or someone with an equivalent doctoral degree) to hood them in preparation to receive their MD degree. After receiving their degrees, the graduates took the Hippocratic or Physicians’ Oath for the first time as new doctors. “Now our paths will diverge, as we take on our varied careers and anticipate new destinations,” said Shamik Mukherji, MD, who delivered the Student Address. “The world of medicine will change along with our lives, but we need

to remain united, do good work, and know that we may need each other along the way.” Among the diverse group of new physicians graduating from the School: Dr. Obinna Ndum, the son of Nigerian immigrants and the first graduate in the School’s history to receive an MD/ MBA combined degree; Dr.Munzareen Padela, a native Long Islander who spent eight years at Stony Brook to complete a BS to MD program; and Dr. Ryan Vellinga, a Utah native and father of three who worked multiple jobs before choosing medicine as a career. Collectively, the Class of 2013 will begin their journeys in medicine in one of 21 specialty residency programs, such as Internal Medicine, Neurology and Emergency Medicine. Nearly one-third of the class (42) will train in primary care disciplines, helping to meet the estimated need for 15,000 new primary care providers over the next five years, according to the Association of American Medical Colleges. Fifty-five percent matched to residencies in New York State, and 26 percent will stay on Long Island for their residency training. Thirteen graduates will stay at Stony Brook for residency training in specialties such as Pediatrics, Orthopaedic Surgery and Anesthesiology.

The Suffolk County Community College Sagtikos Theatre was filled to capacity with police officers, administrators, parents, friends, and students. Thirty two youth police academy completers from Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES) and 14 from Western Suffolk BOCES were the 19th class graduating from the Suffolk County Police Youth Academy. The students lived at the academy in Brentwood for five days. They received uniforms and official Suffolk Police Academy caps. When the morning formalities of presenting arms and performing morning inspections were concluded, the students literally hit the ground running. Over the course of their five-day stay, students engaged in agility, tactics, fire arms simulator, and baton training. They learned first-hand how K-9 dogs are used by the police. They visited the different schools of training at the academy such as radar school, aviation, and emergency service. The Crime Scene Unit was especially interesting to those students who are looking for a career in forensics. Sitting shot gun with a police officer, students learned how to apprehend an assailant which includes cuffing the “perp” while protecting themselves. There was so much to learn. Before picking up a gun at the shooting range, the students had to don protective gear, and receive basic gun training. Could the students get a bull’s eye like several of the police officers training them? Practice makes perfect. The obstacle course was probably the most physically draining. These police academy youths had to run an obstacle

course that concluded with practicing catching an assailant. They hurdled and crawled over and under obstacles, dragged a real person down a hall, gave them CPR, then shot at a target, found the assailant, subdued and cuffed them. The scene was something you would see on an action-packed police show. The police mission and what is taught at the youth police academy is to preserve the public peace, prevent crime, detect and arrest offenders, protect the rights of persons and property, and enforce all laws and ordinances. The graduates were clear that the skills and knowledge they learned related to real-life police work. The program is offered to students enrolled in the Law Enforcement Programs at ESBOCES and is well suited for those who are interested in furthering their career in criminal justice. The experience is designed to operate like an actual police academy including classroom and physical training specifically designed for BOCES students. The SCPD also offers a week of training for non-BOCES students.

Won’t you help us dispel some of the myths and misconceptions that still surround epilepsy? Help us make the world a better place for people with epilepsy who are often discriminated against for no reason. Volunteers are needed to perform a puppet show in area elementary schools. We use the” Kids on the Block” puppets, a troupe of life-size able and disabled puppets. If you have one hour a week for four to six weeks for training and can commit to one performance a month, we will train you in the art of Bunraku, or Japanese Puppetry. Troop 888 in Smithtown is known for its longstanding commitment to helping young men achieve their Eagle Scout honor and is celebrating their 40th anniversary this year. Seen here at the Memorial Day Parade in Smithtown, the Troop consistently marches in honor of all those who have served our country. Under the current leadership of Troop Master John Broome, and several strong Assistant Scout Masters, three young men achieved their Eagle during the past

12 months with nearly one or two more expected each year to come. The Troop is well-known for committed leadership and dedication to the mission of developing youth to be the great leaders of our future. Year after year the Troop has engaged new boys coming up in rank and works to include and encourage families to participate in scouting activities. Frequent camping, hiking, multiple community service activities, whitewater rafting and assorted trips

are common for 888 members. With summer coming, weeklong camping adventures are on the horizon where the youth will have the opportunity to achieve Merit Badges to advance in rank. As a 40 year member of the Smithtown community, and Eagle projects being completed within our Township, we thank Troop 888 and the men and woman who have sacrificed many hours to teach and mentor the boys to become the next generation of leaders on Long Island.

Nurse leaders from Long Island’s hospitals and nursing education programs gathered Wednesday, May 22nd at the Woodbury Country Club to bestow recognition upon their nurse peers at the Nurse of Excellence Award Ceremony hosted by the Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council (NSHC). One nurse from each of the Hospital Council’s member hospitals was nominated for this award, which recognizes outstanding leadership and clinical practice. Deans of area nursing schools also submitted nominations recognizing nursing excellence in education. St James resident Catherine Videtto, RN, the stroke program coordinator at St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center, and Southampton resident Lori Escallier, PhD, associate dean for evaluation and outcomes at Stony Brook University School of Nursing, rose above a field of 25 nominees. Those nominees were selected from a field of about 500 nurses at hospitals and teaching institutions from across Long Island. Videtto is considered a pioneer regarding the disease process of

stroke and is credited with St. Catherine’s attainment of the New York State Department of Health Stroke Certification and The Joint Commission DiseaseSpecific Certification for Stroke – both with no recommendations for improvement. She regularly presents at and organizes stroke management conferences and research symposia. In 2009, the New York State Senate named her a Woman of Distinction for her achievements, pursuit of higher goals, and mentorship. Escallier is a master of nursing evaluation and theory and has presented her evidencebased scholarly research at numerous local, national, and international conferences and has published in dozens of peer-reviewed journals. Her research includes nationally grant-funded research on nursing education, delivery models, and organizational outcomes. She is the recipient of the 2012 Five Year Distinguished Service Award from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing and

the 2012 Outstanding Achievement in Education and Student Relations for the Robert Wood Johnson RWJ Scholars. “Nurses will see their leadership roles expand because of reforms inherent in the Affordable Care Act,” said Paul Connor, chair of the Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council board of directors and CEO of Eastern Long Island Hospital. “In addition, they will be called to fill the gap of primary care services, as insurance coverage expands under reform and as baby boomers age. . . there is a level of comfort going into the future knowing a nurse will always be there.” The Hospital Council’s annual salute to nurses is fashioned after the New York State Legislature’s Nurse of Distinction Program that ended in 1995. NSHC is one of the few hospital associations in the state to continue this program voluntarily. It is now in its 18th year. The NSHC represents Long Island’s not-for-profit and public hospitals. Commack High School senior and science guru Trinity Russell was awarded second place for her project A Study Of Transposition Events Of the Gypsy Retrotransposon In The Neural Cells Of Drosophila Melanogaster And Its Relation To Neuronal Decline at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, one of the most prestigious and competitive science and engineering events in the country. This was Trinity’s second time at the competition; last year she won a third place Grand Award, also in Animal Sciences. Three Commack

students were invited to the competition in Phoenix, Arizona: Trinity, Anthony Bisulco (Electrical Engineering - A Practical Notification System to Identify Incoming Sudden Ionospheric Disturbances (sunspots)), and Joshua Zweig (Computer Science - Wireless Coordination of a Multi-Robot System via Fuzzy Logic Control). The six day competition showcased the work of more than 1,500 high school students from around the world. Students’ research, methods, and findings were presented to prestigious scientists and judges over the course of the week, as well as five thousand

teachers, students, and families from the Phoenix area. Trinity wrote a daily log describing each day’s activities that is posted on the Commack website along with photos. The students were accompanied by science teacher and mentor Dr. Lorraine Solomon. While most of the time in Phoenix was spent preparing and practicing, the students and Dr. Solomon also visited Chase Field for a baseball game, went hiking in the desert, went to a local gold mine and ghost town, and went on a boat tour around Canyon Lake.

All three grades at Mandracchia Sawmill Intermediate School in Commack took first place in the National Science League competitions this year. The National Science League is offered as a school wide enrichment club, and offers students a hands-on, guided inquiry approach. The science process skills of experimentation, observation, measurement, and reasoning from evidence are emphasized. The goal of the club is to provide an opportunity for the students to further explore science topics generally covered in the

intermediate science curriculum, as well as to develop science literacy essential for life as effective, productive citizens in the 21st century. Grade 3 students were the highest scoring school out of 50 nationwide, grade 4 scored higher than 82 schools, and grade 5, higher than 112 other schools. The students met weekly to participate in scientific discovery activities, and the final meet is a highly standardized process. Students in grades 3 and 4 work independently, using only paper and pencil to answer 35 multiple choice questions in 35 minutes.

Grade 5 must answer 40 questions within the same time frame. The top 10 scores for the meet on each grade level constitute the team’s score. Boy Scouts from Troop 125 (Commack) remembered those who gave their lives for our nation this Memorial Day weekend by participating in several community activities. Saturday morning began in the pouring rain when scouts gathered to place flags at the Long Island National Cemetery in Farmingdale. Scouts

then held their own brief ceremony to pay their respects and placed a wreath at the base of the American Flag. Sunday morning, scouts gathered to participate in a special Memorial Day service with the troop’s sponsor, Commack United Methodist Church. The service was led by Reverend Lynda Bates-Stepe and was held in the historic chapel,

the oldest Methodist Church building in New York State (1789). The weekend concluded on Monday when the scouts marched in Commack’s Memorial Day Parade and participated in the ceremony that followed by placing a wreath at the monument where Veterans Highway meets Jericho Turnpike.

Commencement Ceremony At Stony Brook University’s 53rd Annual Commencement at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium, more than 5,600 students received their degree and the right to turn their tassels to the left becoming the University’s newest alumni. They joined more than 145,000 of their forerunners around the globe whose lives and work personify the mission of Stony Brook. “The class of 2013 has a special place in my heart, because many of you entered Stony Brook University with me in 2009,” said Stony Brook University President Samuel L. Stanley Jr., MD during his fourth May commencement address. “In some sense this is my graduating class, and while I will did not fulfill the requirements for a Stony Brook degree, and therefore will be not be walking with you today, I do feel a very real bond with each and every one of you. I hope like me, that you have really enjoyed these four years, and learned a tremendous amount.” During his commencement remarks, President Stanley highlighted three personal stories of graduating students. He recognized James “Zak” Szakmary (history), a 67-year old retired air traffic controller and decorated former United States Marine that served and was injured in Vietnam. Zak plans to continue his studies and pursue a Master’s in Public History; Nadia Habib (psychology major/ studio art minor), a student whose story of immigration to the United States from Bangladesh at 20 months old garnered national attention; and Kevin Sackel (mathematics and physics double major/music minor), the quintessential scholar and gentleman, a 4.0 student who was awarded a Churchill Scholarship to study at Cambridge and pursue a one-year Master of Advanced Study in Mathematics. Receiving honorary doctorates at the ceremony were Terence Netter (Doctor of Fine Arts) the founding director of SBU’s Staller Center for the Arts and a renowned artist and educator in the area of fine arts; and Nora Volkow (Doctor of Science), Director of

the National Institute on Drug Abuse at the National Institutes of Health and a research psychiatrist and scientist who has pioneered the use of brain imaging to investigate the toxic effects and addictive properties of abusable drugs. Provost Dennis N. Assanis announced the winner of the Ward Melville Valedictorian Award, the University’s most distinguished undergraduate honor named for the first chairperson of the Council of Stony Brook University. The Ward Melville Valedictorian Award goes to the graduating senior or seniors who have attained the most outstanding academic record during four years at Stony Brook. This year it was issued to three graduating seniors who received the award with

a 4.00 GPA: Christine Boucher of Portland, Maine, a Linguistics and French major; Katherine Chu of Woodside, Queens, Political Science and History major; and, Kevin Sackel of Plainview, New York, a Mathematics and Physics major and Music minor. Provost Assanis also announced the winners for the H. Lee Dennison Valedictorian Award, named in honor of Suffolk County’s first chief executive and presented to the graduating senior or seniors who entered Stony Brook as a transfer student, completed at least 60

credits of letter-grade work at Stony Brook and attained the most outstanding academic record in that work. The students that received the award with a 4.00 GPA are: Sergey Moyseyenko from the Republic of Belarus, a Business major with a minor in Studio Art; Ista Ariane Egbeto of Rockville, Maryland, a Biology major specializing in Developmental Genetics with a minor in Business Management; Dimitra Hasiotis of Coram, New York, a Biology major; Amanpreet Mukker of New Hyde Park, New York, a Computer Science major; and, Tiffany Sorensen of Centerport, New York, a Spanish Languages and Literature major. The student speaker, Journalism major, Philly Bubaris, chosen by a panel of students and faculty based on a submitted essay, shared her thoughts about her four years as a Seawolf. She said, “Stony Brook has taught us how to be forward thinking, positive, prepared and has helped define our passions. It has taught us that what we think we can do is not nearly as much as we can actually do. It also has taught us that with hard work and perseverance, we will eventually reach the light at the end of the tunnel, and that light is today.” On behalf of the Class of 2013, Tatiana Malebranche, Health Sciences, presented President Stanley with the Senior Class Gift of $5,473, designated to help support Stony Brook Children’s Hospital, which offers the most advanced pediatric specialty care in the region. To the class of 2013, Dr. Stanley noted, “Don’t forget to stay engaged with Stony Brook University. Remember the good times; be proud of your degree, and when you can, give back to help others realize their dreams. So congratulations, you now join the more than 145,000 Stony Brook alumni whose lives and work personify the mission of the University. Now go forth and prosper!”

For many teens, the end of the school year is bittersweet. As soon as the final bell rings, students’ attentions shift from school, directly to unemployment. What should be a time of merriment soon proves to be anxiety provoking. Scrambling for a position, many students will fall victim to the minimum wage, monotonous positions that deprive them of summertime enjoyment. From the moment one embarks upon his first job, he or she becomes an adult. This hopeful teen now has the luxury of paying taxes, lengthy obligations and an overwhelming commitment. But it isn’t all bad.

These children quickly learn the value of money. It takes quite a bit of effort to make a dollar nowadays. The students that are employed can finally pay for their own movie tickets and even foot the bill after dinner. For me, a sixteen year-old who has held a steady summer job for the past four years, the excitement of purchasing my first vehicle was overwhelming. The pride I felt hanging that coconut air freshener from my rearview mirror was immense. I knew that it was finally time to show off what my hard work had earned me. While my friends were at the beach, I was bussing tables; but now, they are all asking me for

rides. It is a great feeling to be one of the few from my generation who can say that they bought their first car with their own hard-earned money. Some parents are wary of pushing their offspring directly into the workforce, and rightfully so! Letting your precious baby grow up is hard, but the rewards that even the most trivial of summer jobs can bring your child are endless. It truly pays to work! On top of building one’s résumé, a summer job is a “hands-on” learning experience that no amount of studying can produce. If you find yourself looking for something to do this summer, maybe it is time to find employment!
