Along the banks of the lagoon wreathed with arrowhead, spiker rush, pickerel weed and giant bullrush, I rest with book in hand and ponder my placid environs. Dwarf sailboats with colored masts soar along the water. A speeding motorboat tows a teenage lad on jet skis through the frothy wake, churning spumes of cool water against his sinewy body. A tawny middle age man perched in a kayak, outfitted in a life vest, navigates his oars right and left. Brilliant sunlight reflects the glossy orange hue of the boat’s hull. A young woman with auburn hair streaming behind her shoulders, in pink tank top and striped shorts, pedals a bicycle pathside. She waves hi to a senior man and wife strolling the road during their recreation walk.

A striking zebra long-wing butterfly propels about sea daisies and flyweed, flowers attracted to its scent. One observes billowy white and grey clouds set on a backdrop of light blue sky. This serene, halcyon atmosphere mingled with refreshing breezes account for the therapeutic elixir, easing the tensions and stresses of the day. All this augments happiness and contentment in life and emphasizes the sentiment that “Life Is Extraordinary.”

A pair of black birds sporting roseate heads, chalk-like lines on sooty wings and tail, yellow beaks and three large frontal talons, beheld moments ago maneuvering and bouncing in the water, now on land pecking at the grass like chickens.

Whisper Gets A Makeover Dogwood, Mt. Pleasant and Tackan elementary school students in the Smithtown CSD recently did their part to celebrate Smithtown’s 350th year in existence by recreating colorful renditions of Whisper, the historical Smithtown bull. Kathleen Lindbom’s fourth-graders at Mt. Pleasant ES painted colorful Long Island Sound scenery in the style of Neo-pop artist Romero Britto for their large wooden replica of Whisper.

At Dogwood ES, thirdgraders decorated their bull with Dogwood leaves and flowers they created in class under the direction of Lindbom and her fellow art teachers Claudia Chandler, Danielle Potter and Katie Vanderveldt. Under the direction of Chandler, kindergartners at Tackan ES created their own multicultural version of Whisper, representing different heritages using flags from around the world. In 1903, Lawrence

Smith Butler, a descendent of Smithtown founder Richard Smith, proposed the idea of creating a bronze statue of a bull. The much-disputed legend alleges that Native Americans offered Richard Smith whatever land he could circle in a day’s time while riding atop his trusty bull named Whisper. Historians have since derived several theories about Whisper, including one that Smith merely had a pet bull he liked to walk around town.

Eagle Honoree

Suffolk County Legislator Robert Trotta congratulated Eric Homeyer of Boy Scout Troop 75 at his recent Eagle Scout Court of Honor. Eric, a resident of Kings Park, earned the distinguished rank of

Eagle Scout through his commitment to scouting and the community. He secured the level of Eagle Scout by successfully completing his Community Service Project, which was to supervise his fellow volunteers while

constructing and installing eight benches in the water of the fly fishing stations at Caleb Smith State Park in Smithtown. The benches provide a place for the fishermen to rest and measure their catch.

Rotary Honorees An annual tradition continued as the Smithtown Rotary Club honored the perseverance and personal journey of 14 hardworking students from Smithtown High Schools East and West during the Smithtown CSD Rotary Award Ceremony. Every district high school guidance counselor recommended one deserving recipient who has overcome significant

obstacles or adversity to excel in school. Whether a disability, personal tragedy or hardship, each recipient demonstrated a dedication to succeed despite the challenge. One by one, the counselors gave their heartfelt accounts of why their students are deserving of the recognition. The 2015 Smithtown Rotary Club Award winners are: Monique Abrams, Brandon Bunger, Thomas

Datre, Tyler Eley, Tyler Farkas, Rishma Farooq, Saige Ferentinos, Grete Kraus, Gabriella Link, Connor McKean, Nicholas McMahon, Zachary Reyes, Jillian Shea and Warren Wang. Each winner received a certificate of recognition and a Barnes and Noble gift card from the Smithtown Rotary Club.

Smithtown High School West’s Hannah Rosenthal won second place in the nonfiction division of the Writing for Peace essay contest. Hannah’s essay, ”Jews and the Black Death,” will be featured in the 2016 issue of DoveTales, an international journal of the arts. Students were encouraged to write an essay about a social,

political, environmental or familial challenge faced by individuals within a cultural group, or a personal experience with another culture. Writing for Peace is a global nonprofit organization dedicated to cultivating empathy through education and creative writing in order to develop a foundation of compassion on which

to build a more peaceful world. Their goal is to inspire and guide young writers to refine their craft and to consider the many ways their writing focus can bring us closer to nonviolent conflict resolution, a society that values human rights, as well as environmental and economic sustainability.

The Gift of Time By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Time. It’s the one thing we never seem to have quite enough of. There is always a deadline, a constant reminder of what we have yet to accomplish within a given period. From the moment we are born, there is a schedule to follow, a time frame to adhere to, expectations to be met – rarely a moment of peace. From classroom bell schedules and term paper due dates to newspaper and magazine press schedules, my life has pretty much been one giant revolving deadline from kindergarten on

up. And, while generally on time for such things, my reluctance to be a “morning person,” coupled with a (slightly) over-the-top sense of perfectionism, occasionally creates obstacles, self-imposed as they may be. Sometimes, you just need to take a collective deep breath and let things go. Choose your battles wisely; smile and accept the rest. It’s not giving up. It’s not even giving in. It’s simply making a conscious decision to rise above with an eye on the greater goal, whatever that may be. It’s not always easy. And

for those like me who tend to micromanage and overanalyze, it can be nearly impossible to let go and relinquish control of the day-today monotonies which, together, make up the great majority of life. But once you set the wheels in motion, it’s amazing how truly freeing it is. Simply live and let live. We can only control ourselves; not others, not our surroundings. The sooner we realize this and stop trying, the better. At the end of the day, you might even find you have more time to do the things you truly want to. Imagine that.

The Long Island Game Farm will kick off its summer season beginning on Saturday, May 23rd. At the largest combined Children’s Zoo and Wildlife Park on Long Island, guests can see hundreds of animals and get up close and personal with some of their favorite exotic critters. The Game Farm will be open seven days a week during the summer, allowing families more time to learn about the wildlife and experience the fun. Would you know what to do if you witnessed a cardiac emergency? A recent survey suggests that 70 percent of Americans feel helpless to act during a cardiac emergency because they don’t know how to administer CPR or they’re afraid of hurting the victim. In honor of National CPR and AED Awareness Week, June 1st7th, the American Heart Association | American Stroke Association encourages everyone to learn Hands-Only CPR by watching a short video by visiting www.heart.org/ HandsOnlyCPR. Cardiac arrest is an electrical malfunction in the heart that causes an irregular heartbeat and disrupts the flow of blood to the brain, lungs and other organs. Each year, over 326,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur in the

U.S. and only 10 percent of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest victims survive. According to the American Heart Association | American Stroke Association, 70 percent of out-of-hospital cardiac arrests happen in homes and residential settings. Therefore, if you are called on to give CPR in a cardiac emergency, you will most likely be trying to save the life of someone you love. CPR, especially when performed immediately, can double or triple a cardiac arrest victim’s chance of survival. Hands-Only CPR has just two simple steps: If you see a teen or adult suddenly collapse, (1) Call 9-1-1; and (2) Push hard and fast in the center of the chest. During CPR, you should push on the chest at a rate of at least 100 compressions per minute.

To easily keep this rate, push the chest to the beat of the disco song “Stayin’ Alive.” By empowering bystanders to perform Hands-Only CPR, the American Heart Association | American Stroke Association works to strengthen the chain of survival – a five-step process that can mean the difference between life and death for someone experiencing sudden cardiac arrest. The critical bystander links for the chain of survival include calling 9-1-1, early CPR and early defibrillation. Students from Smithtown East captured three individual 1st Place finishes and 2nd place overall, at the CSI Challenge 2015, “The Final at Bat.” According to Ms. Maria Zeitlin, advisor of the forensics team, “the reason we were able to place is because of the depth of our team and the excellence of everyone who participates. We lost an integral member of the team, namely our fingerprint technician, the night before the event. It is a true testimonial to the caliber of students who participated that they captured second place and three individual first place titles.” The CSI Challenge, conceived by Suffolk County detective Dave Tricamo, challenges students to solve a murder mystery scenario in 7 hours. The students are given a murder mystery script approximately 2 weeks prior to the competition. They work as a team to consider clues that they need to investigate. On the day of the CSI Challenge students compete to conduct indepth laboratory analyses so as to collect the forensic evidence necessary to solve the crime! The Smithtown East students were an incumbent team having garnered 1st place last year. According to Ms. Zeitlin, “The students are extremely analytical in the way they process the evidence. Captain Brian Righter led the presentation to the judges and each member contributed their findings. Courtney Cheng spent hours looking through a microscope to decipher trace evidence, Meg Obata was an ace in entomology,

Wayne Li was exceptional in computer hacking analysis and “cracked the code” in 30 minutes, Elizabeth Rose and Jessica Jeng teamed to identify the missing bones through anthropological methods, and new to the team, interrogators Jill Pesce and Ruisi Zhong never let a clue go by. Honestly, it really takes a team effort to accomplish

this task and we have an amazing team!” Three 1st place finishes were awarded to the Smithtown East students: Jill Pesce and Ruisi Zhong placed 1st for interrogation, Wayne Li placed 1st for Computer Forensics, and Courtney Cheng (assisted by Meg Obata for gunshot residue) was awarded 1st for Trace Evidence. The CSI Challenge is an inquiry-based competition

CSI Challenge that incorporates many of the curricular science disciplines with teamwork and collaboration. Students participate in hands-on activities that encourage higher order thinking as they probe into the solving of a murder mystery. The field of criminalistics is explored and students hone skills such as fingerprint lifting and identification, anthropology, mold impressions, serology, hair and fiber analysis, toxicology and chemical testing, ballistics, evidence collection, soil analysis, computer forensics, interview and interrogation, entomology, and crime scene processing. The team competed at the 15th Annual CSI Challenge at LIU Post.
