ENVIRONMENTAL PROGRAM - Smithtown Central School District has partnered with the Town of Smithtown for a new concept to have students – and the community at large – become better informed on environmental issues via hands-on, experiential learning. Town officials would present to students about tracking stormwater runoff, where water goes once it’s down the drain and speak about what else goes down the drain. Art students would create an awareness campaign focusing on how to keep stormwater runoff clean. “We’re extremely excited about this partnership,’” said Town of Smithtown Supervisor Ed Wehrheim. “It’s always great when we can involve our younger generations to become more engaged within the community. This opportunity will shine a light on real-world issues; from cleaning our waterways and protecting the ecosystem to finding a solution to the impending solid waste crisis on Long Island. It’s the answer to that age old question ‘When am I ever going to need this skill in the real world?’ Our youth will learn firsthand how to apply STEM-related solutions to real-world issues. We’re thrilled to be working with the school district in what will undoubtedly be a phenomenal learning experience for our youth.”

Smithtown Central School District has partnered with the Town of Smithtown for a new concept to have students – and the community at large – become better informed on environmental issues via hands-on, experiential learning. District administrators and board of education members are in the planning phase with town officials to partner their resources for a new educational program. The district’s teachers will work alongside Town of Smithtown employees for presentations and field trips that will provide additional hands-on learning. “With this exciting new partnership, we will have an opportunity to create learning environments and instruction where students will be able to use what they learn in appropriate, new contexts that better facilitate the transfer of learning,” said Smithtown Central School District Superintendent of Schools Dr. Mark Secaur. Smithtown Central School District’s science director Laura Snell added, “The opportunity to partner with the Town of Smithtown on science correlated programs affords students with firsthand experience on executing science and engineering practices that are directly related to their curriculum. They see more clearly the importance of being civic minded in order to apply STEM-related solutions to real-world problems.” While still in the planning phase in terms of the programs, the following are some of the ideas slated to launch next fall: Waste Not: Solid Waste: This program will teach people how to create less garbage. When people throw out food, all the resources to grow, ship and produce it are thrown away, including massive volumes of water. Different learning

Town of Smithtown Celebrates the Iconic “Whisper” the Bull Statue’s 80th Anniversary Watching Over Smithtown Supervisor Ed Wehrheim, and the town administration joined with State, County & Local Elected Officials, Smithtown Historical Society, and direct descendants of Richard “Bull” Smith; Mayor Richard Smith and cousin, Jennifer Smith, to wish the iconic bull statue a happy 80th anniversary, early yesterday morning. On Monday, May 10th, 2021 the rain cleared up long enough to mark the occasion, celebrating 80 years of “Whisper” watching over the community. The iconic statue was first unveiled to the people of Smithtown on May 10th 1941. “Our hope is that parents will share with their children this little piece of our history today, maybe even share in some fond memories. Whisper has not had it easy. He’s survived more than a few car accidents, several teenage pranks; including
some folks up here with us today… when they were younger of course. In my former career as parks director, I could attest to the fact that poor Whisper has been through a lot in his 80 years in Smithtown. So let’s give Whisper a day of praises and good wishes as he continues to watch over the Community.” Supervisor Ed Wehrheim Lawrence Smith Butler, a descendent of Richard Smith, originally proposed the idea of the statue to his friend, Long Island Sculptor Charles Cary Rumsey. Whisper was originally designed in France by Rumsey. The casting of the statue was completed in 1923. The bull was brought to the United States where it first stood for some time in front of the Brooklyn Museum, before it was placed in storage. Upon Rumsey’s death, his heirs donated the statue to the Town. In 1941 Butler swayed the Smithtown
Town Board to construct a concrete pedestal and raised the $1,750 needed to cover the cost of the move. Through his efforts, Lawrence Smith Butler arranged for the transport of the fourteen-foot, fiveton bronze bull, by way of trucking and rail. On May 10, 1941, the daughter of sculptor Charles Cary Rumsey, Mary Rumsey presented the statue to the people of Smithtown, set on its pedestal at the Head of the Nissequogue River. “Many thanks to Laurence Butler. It was his friend; Charles Rumsey, who crafted this bull. It’s been a welcome site to all of us who live here as well as all who visit Smithtown. I also want to give a special thanks to Supervisor Ed Wehrheim, his entire team, and to Joe Arico and the Parks Department. They work so hard every day, doing an incredible job maintaining this statue and our beautiful parks and grounds.” - Mayor Richard Smith, Nissequogue Mayor and direct descendant of Richard “Bull” Smith Town Historian, Bradly Harris reminded everyone, during the ceremony that Smith got the deed for the land; known today as Smithtown, from his friend Lion Gardiner. While the legendary story behind Richard Smith’s bull ride may be mere folklore, the iconic statue remains a prominent piece of historic artwork in the township. In 2019, the town completed renovations to the monument. Revitalization efforts included the restoration of the concrete base, a new freestanding wall, complete with a “Town of Smithtown” sign, landscaping, and energy efficient lighting. The Town Parks Department is expected to add seasonal plantings surrounding the bull later this month. James Cress Florist in Smithtown created

The legend: Richard Smith was gifted the land now known as Smithtown for his assistance in rescuing the kidnapped daughter of a Montauk
Chief. The town’s limits were determined by the distance he could ride his bull over the course of one day. The Truth: Lion Gardiner received a primary portion of the land now known as Smithtown from Grand Sachem Wyandanch, for helping to arrange
the safe return of the chief’s daughter, who was kidnapped on her wedding night. Gardiner later transferred the rights to the land to Smith. The possession of the land was confirmed by a patent granted to Smith on March 3, 1665.

Matinecock District Hosts Cub Scout Fun Day At Manor Farm On May 8th, the Matinecock District of the Suffolk County Council (Scouts BSA) held a Cub Scout Fun Day at Manor Farm located in Huntington NY. Following Covid restrictions, participants filled out forms and wore masks while they enjoyed the day’s events. There were 51 people in attendance and
plenty of recruiting materials such as flexible Frisbees and sunglasses to hand out to families. The Matinecock District covers scouting for youths age 5 to 17 (Kindergarten through High School, no previous Cub Scouting experience needed to join Boy Scouts) in the Town of Huntington and the western section of the Smithtown Township.
There were four new families in the surrounding area who came to learn more about scouting as well as to enjoy the games and sunshine. At the event, two Cub Scout Packs from Huntington set up tables for recruiting the youths in the scouting program -Pack 406 Melville and Pack

makes this farm special. Bethel Hobbs Community Farm has 6 distinct areas: The Memorial Garden: The Memorial Garden is at the front tip of their property. It is a quiet, shaded area with flowers, beautiful greenery and a peaceful waterfall to remember people who have passed on. The Education Garden: The Education Garden area grows many heirloom varieties, has a small compost area and hosts educational events for small groups. The Greenhouse: The Greenhouse allows this farm to extend their season during the colder months. The Community Garden: The Community Garden hosts Brookhaven Community garden plots. The Garden of Ephraim: The Garden of Ephraim is a wheelchair accessible garden, which consists of a beautiful paved area with raised beds! There is also street access directly into The Garden of Ephraim. Food Pantry Donation Area: This area of the farm consists of several acres of farm land and is the main growing area. The selfless efforts of all the volunteers that work hard to keep this farm afloat is truly a blessing. They don’t get paid a dime, but they love what they do. To me, this farm shines bright as a symbol of hope and resilience. However, it needs some more help itself. Bethel Hobbs Community Farm is a nonprofit organization with a rich history. You may know and love their farm, or you may never believe there is an 11-acre farm in Centereach that has been feeding Long Islanders for decades! The James Hobbs family came to Long Island from Georgia in 1906 and grew farm produce in New Village (North Centereach) for local Long Islanders for 3 generations, first as farm workers and later purchasing the land, which became known as Hobbs Farm. James’ son, Alfred Hobbs took ownership in 1955 and farmed his own property, as well as rental farmland in the surrounding area for many years. He passed up many opportunities to sell the property, hoping that it would always remain a farm. Thankfully, it does remain a farm to this day. Hobbs Farm is the last farm in Centereach, as well as the last AfricanAmerican family farm on Long Island. When Mr. Hobbs passed away in 1996, he left the farm property to the Bethel AME Church in Setauket, where he was a member. The farm was renamed Bethel Hobbs Community Farm. However, the church struggled with local community organizations that were threatening to buyout the land for other means. In 2007, “Friends of Hobbs Farm” was formed, which led to the restoration process of the farm. Today, the church still owns the farm, a non-profit organization that is entirely operated by volunteers. The farm is 11 acres and it grows and harvests an average of over 30,000 pounds of fresh, organic produce, which then gets donated to several local food pantries and soup kitchens on the island. They also offer CSA Memberships, which allows locals to receive a weekly share of nutritionally dense produce grown on their farm right in Centereach. The produced is packed the same day as they go out for delivery, and recipiants can rest knowing exactly where they were grown. Additionally, the farm offers educational programs, community events and they have a seasonal farm stand. With a strong faith-based history and being that it is still owned by a local church, you will notice a strong Christian presence as soon as you walk onto their land. Faith based signs, a large wooden cross and a welcoming peaceful environment truly

Soldier Becomes Angel To Injured And Abused Cat While she didn’t set out to be, Army Sergeant Rode became an angel to a cat while serving in the Middle East. She’s on a mission to help Paws of War with the costs of rescuing her cat, which she named Bubba, back to the states with her since she has received new orders. It’s a mission that Paws of War can help her pull off, but only with the support of the community. This type of effort takes a village, and the organization is asking people to support Sgt. Rode, who is serving her country. “This is a story you can’t help but to love and want to get behind,” explains Dereck Cartright, a disabled veteran who is the stateside logistics coordinator at Paws of War. “Sgt. Rode saved Bubba, but there’s only so much she can do on her own” When Sgt. Rode first saw Bubba, he had given up. Bloody, frail, and injured, the cat ran from everyone. It was clear that he had been fighting for his life for a long time. Sgt. Rode knew she had to help. For days, she left food, waiting nearby to make sure he ate. Initially, he cried and backed away when he saw her, but eventually, he grew to trust her and allowed her to sit within just a few feet while he frantically ate the food she left. Slowly but surely, Bubba allowed her to get a little closer until, finally, Sgt. Rode was able to touch him. However, what she discovered horrified her. Old scars mixed in with new wounds that covered Bubba’s body. He had been through a lot and was timid, but once he felt the kind touch of Sgt. Rode, he immediately began purring, showing her the love and affection he had never been shown. She became Bubba’s angel, and he became her greatest joy while serving overseas, and they were essentially inseparable. Worry came back to her when she received new orders to head home, and it was clear that she would
not be able to take Bubba with her. She couldn’t stand the thought of leaving him behind to fend for himself or to try to find someone else to provide him with the love and care that he has grown accustomed to with her. When she heard about the work that Paws of War does, helping soldiers to get their pets back to the U.S., and she turned to it for assistance. “Bubba is such a wonderful cat, and he greets me every time he sees me and purrs loudly whenever I pet him,” says Sgt. Rode. “I have formed such a great bond with him, it took me so long to gain his trust, and I can’t fathom the thought of leaving him behind once I get deployed back to the U.S. He has been a wonderful companion and provides me so much comfort when I need it most. I could not leave this cat behind to suffer and die. He trusts me, and I won’t let him down.” Paws of War is seeking the support of the community to cover the costs in order to bring Bubba back to the states to live out his life with Sgt. Rode. While the organization has helped many soldiers bring their rescued animals back, it’s a mission that is costly. Soldiers tend to rescue stray dogs and cats, and they form bonds with them that help them to find comfort during their time of deployment. With the help of donations from the community, they are able to cover the expenses that are involved in

National Fire Protection Association Says Use Caution When Using Grills According to the National Fire Protection Association, roughly half of the injuries involving grills are thermal burns. Of the approximately 16,600 patients who visit emergency rooms for injuries involving grills each year, 8,200 are treated for thermal burns. UPMC HealthBeat notes that thermal burns typically occur when a person touches flames or fire
or hot molten liquid or steam. Thermal burns also can result when touching a hot object, such as cooking pans, irons or heated appliances. WebMD advises burn sufferers to call 911 immediately if the burn penetrates all layers of the skin; if the skin appears leathery or charred, with white, brown or black patches; or if the hands, feet, face, or genitals are burned. In addition, call
911 immediately if infants or seniors suffer any burns, even if the burn does not appear severe. Treatment will depend on the severity and location of the burn. In the immediate aftermath of a thermal burn, Stanford Children’s Health advises cooling the affected area with cold water or a cold compress until the pain is reduced or alleviated. Avoid breaking any blisters that form, and

protect the burn with a dry, sterile gauze bandage or with a clean bed sheet or cloth. Do not attempt to remove clothing that is stuck to the burned area. In such instances, cut around the clothing and leave the burn intact. Resist any temptation to apply ointments, oils or sprays to the burned area, as these should only be applied when prescribed by a doctor.
