So, some of you may be wondering how my new pal Squeegee the Snail fared. In short, not well. His stay was brief – less than a week, in fact – and quite unsuccessful. While I may have played a role in his untimely demise, I must say he didn’t seem very lively upon arrival. No matter how many times I tried to greet him {read: head-butted his shell repeatedly}, he never seemed to want to come out and play.
While disappointing, it wasn’t until my Human began depositing small “cookies” (algae wafers) into the tank for Squeegee to consume that my irritation set in. Why should this bizarre-looking golden shell of a creature have an even better menu to choose from than me? Here I was, forced to suck down my bland betta pellets, while HE had a giant wafer to inhale. Well, of course I couldn’t handle such a slight, and so, as soon as my Human would leave the room, I would knock Squeegee upside down and drag his cookie to the other side of the tank, where I would happily munch away at it. I think my Human was upset by this, as she kept muttering something about “crumbs” and what a mess I was making.
Isn’t that what the purpose of this stupid snail was to begin with? In any case, after four or five days, Squeegee stopped poking his head out of his shell entirely. Maybe it was starvation, since I did consume all his cookies. Maybe it was the concussion I gave him upon initially welcoming him to my abode. Maybe he wasn’t the healthiest snail in the tank to begin with. Whatever the reason, my companion was removed by the Human, with admonitions to “behave” and comments that I was a “little brat” who “couldn’t get along with anyone.” Well, fine then. Cancel the rental notice. This betta prefers to fly solo! Maybe I can still get a couple of those cookies to go though?

Eagle Congrats Suffolk County Legislator Robert Trotta was invited to the Eagle Scout Court of Honor to recognize Dylan Esposito who had attained the rank of Eagle Scout. Legislator Trotta congratulated Dylan and gave him a proclamation citing this accomplishment. Dylan’s Eagle Scout Project was completed at the Brookhaven Volunteer
Firefighter’s Museum. His dad and uncle are city firemen. On site there were two Maltese Crosses constructed of multicolored brick pavers, which had been buried and neglected for years. Dylan located the buried pavers and cleaned them. He built two bases with lumber and relocated the Maltese crosses brick by brick on top of the bases,
where it now stands on the museum’s property. “Becoming an Eagle Scout is a great achievement and is something that you have done while still a junior in high school. It is a recognition that will stay with you for the rest of your life,” said Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta.

In 2016, NYSSMA, the New York State School Music Association, celebrates its 84th year as the largest state affiliate of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME). NYSSMA’s mission is to advocate for and improve music education across New York State by promoting and producing
appropriate activities and programs for its membership and students in member school music programs. This year, NYSSMA’s Spring 2016 Solo & Ensemble Festival in Babylon was filled with high notes, from trumpeters to flautists and vocalists to violinists. Several students from Saints Cyril
and Methodius in Deer Park attended this year, with shiny instruments and clean music sheets in hand. They were ready for the day of auditioning and did their school proud with top marks. Congratulations to all the talented musicians who represented Saints Cyril and Methodius School so well!

Scouting for Food A Scout is helpful, and in the days of shortages in the local food pantries, our area Scouts were out in force to try and change the situation. The Scouts of the Matinecock District (Boy Scouts of America) took part in the annual Scouting for Food on March 19th. Armed with paper bags from the King Kullen Supermarkets, Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Venture Scouts representing 23 Cub Scout Packs, Boy Scout Troops, and the members of the Nissequogue Chapter of Shinnecock Lodge, Order of the Arrow, participated in this effort to help stock the local food pantries. Scout Units also collected food that they delivered directly to their local food pantries. This campaign was part of the national phenomena known as “Scouting For Food” which began in the 1980s when Scouts answered the call to help members of their communities that were experiencing hard times. The need has not changed and the Scouts have not wavered in their dedication to this important cause. Collected were nonperishable items such as cereal, pasta, rice, canned soups, vegetables, stew and common household goods like soap and paper products. Canned and boxed goods were dropped off at the John Glenn High School in Elwood, the Matinecock District’s packing/ distribution center for the day, where Scouts, OA members, adult volunteer Scouters, local community members and the Matinecock District Committee members manned the drop-off station at the John Glenn H.S. This mix of Scouting volunteers and members of the Hauppauge to Huntington-area community participated in the loading, unloading, sorting, and boxing the donated food that was collected by the other Cubs and Scouts.
All this food was distributed to more than two dozen local food pantries in the community and across Long Island, including: (in the Huntington area): Northport’s Ecumenical Lay Food Council, St. Hugh of Lincoln, St. Anthony of Padua RC Church’s Food Pantry, Gloria Dei RC Church and the Bethel Brethren Lutheran Church, and Helping Hands Mission; (in the Smithtown Township area) St. Thomas Moore RC Church (Hauppauge), Temple Beth Chai of Hauppauge, and Commack United Methodist Church. Additionally, food items were also donated to Island Harvest and the Harry Chapin Food

Bank. In these recessionary times, many families and people contributed food to the Scouts and in excess of 20,421 pounds of foodstuffs were distributed. The food (at 10 to 12 pounds per bag) was distributed to each of the participating district’s area food pantries to help restock
their shelves. Especially recognized for their collections and donations are Cub Scout Pack 406 (Huntington Station) with 1,200 pounds, and Boy Scout Troop 410 (Northport) with 4,429 pounds. Matthew Schieferstein, Matinecock Scout District’s Food Collection and Distribution Co-Coordinator for the Matinecock District, said, “On behalf of the Matinecock District. (B.S.A.) many thanks to the Commack, Smithtown, Northport, Hauppauge, East Northport, Kings Park, and Huntington area residents who contributed to the food collection by the Boy Scouts of America during our 29th annual Scouting for Food. Although these local food pantries have been given many days supply to assist the families in this area who are in need, they are still in need. Anyone who wishes to contribute is more than welcome to stop by and help resupply these food pantries with any canned or boxed items at any time during the year. A special thanks to the Elwood School District for the use of the John Glenn High School as our collection and distribution location.” Other Scouting volunteers added to Mr. Schieferstein’s remarks commenting, “Many thanks go to our neighbors in the community who assisted the Cubs and Scouts by generously donating food to the “Scouting for Food 2016” program. Boy Scout Troop 343 (Hauppauge) had a chance to stay overnight and relive some of the country’s history when 20 youths and 10 adults participated in an overnighter sleeping in the bunks below decks on the Battleship New Jersey, which had seen service in WWII, Korean War, and most recently during the first Gulf Crisis. The trip was a total success as well as a learning experience for the 11 to 17 year-olds, during the weekend of May 14th15th. This thrilling experience is best described by Life Scout/Eagle Candidate Ryan DiSilvio, who wrote, “The USS New Jersey was

a very cool trip. I think all of the scouts would say the same. One of the first things anyone saw were the main batteries (big guns). Just looking at them in person was awesome. Once we went below deck we chose our bunk and had fun while doing it. When we went on our tour we learned many facts about the ship. One fact was that the USS New Jersey is America’s most decorated battleship and surviving warship, which was very impressive. Later on we went to the bridge of the ship and it was awesome. Some of us even sat in the captain’s seat. The food they served there was also good. After some
more exploring we went to our bunks and tried going to sleep but it took us a little while to fall asleep because of how excited we all were. Finally we had our breakfast the next morning and packed our stuff. We also were able to earn the Radio Merit Badge. We are looking forward to going back again.” The highlight for the trip for Boy Scout Ian Seeger was the fact that he was one of two scouts that were chosen to shoot the 40 caliber gun, much like a cannon, at the end of the evening’s instructions (and it also signaled that it was time to get to the bunks and try to get some sleep).

For his Eagle Scout community project, Jacob designed and built a wall with spaces for cats to rest or sleep on at the Town of Smithtown’s Animal Shelter. Legislator Rob Trotta congratulated Jacob and
noted that achieving the rank of Eagle Scout will stay with him for the rest of his life and the skills and leadership qualities he attained through scouting will guide him in his future endeavors.

Two Smithtown High School East students have been awarded top prizes in the American Society of Human Genetics National Essay Contest. Jillian Pesce and Sanjana Eranki, who are part of the ThINK Science Research Program under the direction of Smithtown High School East research coordinator Maria Zeitlin, submitted their essays for inclusion into the contest against more than 1,400 entries representing students in 44 states and 23 foreign countries. More than 250 geneticists from the ASHG membership volunteered to judge the students’ essays on the basis of scientific accuracy, creativity and writing quality. This year’s topic
required that the students not only learn important details about an adultonset genetic condition, but to take a stance on the ASHG’s position that adolescents who may be at risk to these diseases should defer predictive, genetic testing during such delicate, formative years. “I am thrilled that two of my students have been recognized by the American Society of Human Genetics,” said Ms. Zeiltin. “This contest had submissions from all over the world, and placing is a real testimonial to the caliber of excellence in this program. To prepare for writing, all of my students have to first conduct extensive background literature review to learn
about the essay topic. It is an intensive amount of work, but the process is really important in teaching scientific writing.” Both Jillian and Sanjana chose to write about Huntington’s disease, an inherited degenerative nerve condition emanating from a mutation of the HTT gene for the Huntingtin protein. Jillian will be awarded a $600 and Sanjana will receive $100. Ms. Zeitlin will receive three MiniOne Systems from the contest sponsor Embi Tec as well as $600 of additional equipment for the classroom to pursue research in genetic studies with her students.

Kindergartners in Sharon Weissman’s class and third-graders in Annamarie Polito’s class at Branch Brook Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District buddied up to perform a hands-on science lesson on
May 20th. Dressed in lab coats, the kindergarten and thirdgrade students became scientists for the afternoon as they paired for an experiment to test how many rocks it would take to sink their boats.
After lessons on the concept of sink and float, the students designed their own boats out of aluminum foil. The buddies were then tasked with predicting how many rocks it would take to sink their boat.

Hauppauge High School’s IB film students won four Best in Show Awards out of the 80 films that were shown at the Long Island Media Arts Show, which was held at Five Towns College in Dix Hills, New York. Student Invention
Two Commack High School juniors are in the spotlight for designing a metal grate that would block almost all floodwater from reaching the subway tunnels, as it did during the storm surge caused by Hurricane Sandy in 2012. Raymond Janis and Kyle Mitra, both Intel International Science and Engineering Fair Finalists, presented their design prototype at the recent competition in Phoenix, AZ, and are featured in the Society for Science online journal https:// student.societyforscience.
org/article/teens-inventway-keep-floodwaters-outsubways. Floodwater enters the subway system via ventilation grates, which are at ground level. Using the same size grate dimensions as those in use now, Ray and Kyle created a scale model using a 3D printer that allows the grates to be closed. When the grate is open, there is air flow to the tunnels below. Unlike the grates used now, the teens’ invention, operated with a tamperproof key, allows the grate to be closed, blocking
water from entering. Their research project, entitled “Combating Storm Surge Inundation in New York City Subway Stations” also won the RICOH Sustainability Award, the American Metertological Society Award, and the the Best in Fair, All Categories, at the State level competition (NYSSEF). The students’ invention would not be expensive to implement, and subways world-wide would benefit from using their system, as it is adaptable for use on any size grate.

time-honored tradition of proper flag folding. The custom of folding the United States flag into the shape of a triangle bestows unique honor and respect upon the flag. The 8th graders sat rapt in awe
of this beautiful tradition, then were able to get some hands on practice as they learned the new skill in preparation to perform as part of their Spring Concert.

EAGLE RANK ACHIEVED - Last week Legislator Leslie Kennedy had the distinct privilege of paying honor to Ian Whitehead, who has achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. Leslie Kennedy was joined with Assemblyman Michael Fitzpatrick and Suffolk County Comptroller John Kennedy in honoring this young man. In order to obtain the rank of Eagle Scout, one must complete the appropriate amount of merit badges as well as a big community service project. Ian Whitehead chose to complete his project for the benefit of the Smithtown Fire Department Riverfront property. Ian removed an old playground that was on the property and he rebuilt a safer sturdier playground so that the children can enjoy safely.
