Gibson, a 1966 graduate of Suffolk, presented the college, pictured, with artifacts from his voyages aboard the space shuttle including a Suffolk pennant he carried into space. “Commander Gibson was impressed by our

Long Island Volunteer Enterprise (LIVE) is celebrating 25 years of coordinating corporate volunteerism initiatives with a week-long, islandwide volunteer drive from June 3rd-11th, 2017. Since 1993, corporate volunteers matched to one-day projects through LIVE have completed over 250,000 community service hours for nonprofit agencies
benefitting Long Islanders in need. Poet Laureate The Suffolk County Legislature unanimously approved legislation cosponsored by Legislators Bill Lindsay III and Leslie Kennedy to name Mrs. Gladys Henderson of Nesconset as the Suffolk County Poet Laureate at the May 16th General Meeting. Mrs. Henderson will begin her twoyear term as the Laureate on June 1st; succeeding Robert Savino of West Islip. The Suffolk County Poet Laureate is selected by an independent committee comprised of former Laureates. Upon their selection, the committee then submits its recommendation to the Economic Development Committee of the Suffolk County Legislature, where the nominee is further evaluated and invited to discuss their plans and ideas to promote poetry and the arts throughout the County as the official poet. “Gladys Henderson truly cares about her craft and the craft of other poets, especially those who are local Long Islanders,” said Legislator Kennedy “It is vitally important that we encourage the arts here in Suffolk County and Gladys L. Henderson is the perfect candidate to do that as Poet Laureate.” Mrs. Henderson is a seasoned poet who has been featured in several publications and in addition to placing in the top 3 in over 25 competitions, she has received many distinguished awards, including the Walt Whitman Poet of the Year in 2010 and placement on the Writer’s Digest Poetry Competition’s Top 100. Gladys has been published throughout various publications and has authored “Eclipse of Heaven,” a 2008 chapbook published by Finish Line Press.
“Poetry is an art form that creates a common family; one that spiritually connects us to each another regardless of our faith or position. It becomes our language; it dissolves differences and it is truly a healing art, said Gladys Henderson at the Economic Development Committee. She went on to explain that her goal is to help young children become excited about poetry, so that it creates a lasting impact on their lives. She discussed partnering with the members of the committee to create
free workshops in their communities, at parks, and within our schools.” Mrs. Henderson credits her older brother for her initial spark to write about nature and life, as they traversed the woods and waterways around their childhood home in New Rochelle. Upon graduating with a Bachelor’s of Science in Art Education and Psychology from Midwestern University, she moved to Long Island where
she began teaching English and Art in both public and private schools and set off down the path that led her to advance poetry for all Long Islanders. “Gladys is a remarkable poet who is always striving to better educate our communities across Long Island,” said Legislator Bill Lindsay III. “As a former teacher she knows that the influence of a good educator can never be erased, and I’m confident that Gladys will help to craft many long lasting programs that cement poetry, art, and cultural education throughout Suffolk County.” As an active member of the poetry community on Long Island, Mrs. Henderson was part of the committee to create the 1st Long Island Poetry Marathon, the “Frost on the Road” workshop fundraiser for the Robert Frost Fundraiser; and in addition, she runs two poetry workshop venues on Long Island, conducts lectures, serves as a poetry competition judge, and takes every opportunity to advance the arts and art education. Mrs. Henderson was also selected by 1964 Pulitzer Prize Winner, Louis Simpson, as a member of his monthly writing group – an honor that she holds near to her heart and helped her to further develop her craft. Mrs. Henderson has already made plans to meet with Parks Committee Chairwoman, Kara Hahn to discuss poetry workshops in Suffolk County Parks and is ready to advance the work of many young poets throughout Suffolk County as the official Suffolk County Poet Laureate.

“EGG-CITING” things are happening at Forest Brook Elementary School. As part of a chick embryology unit, Caitlin Classey’s and Lynne Clarkin’s first grade “chick experts” worked hard to learn all about chicks and brought this learning experience to life by integrating technology into their classroom. The students’ journey began with an incubator,
12 chicken eggs and a webcam. After the chicken eggs were incubated for 21 days, the students and families watched eight chicks hatch through a live video feed that was broadcasted over their class website. The students used various technology apps – including Tellagami, Chatterpix and Seesaw – to share their new knowledge with others throughout this “egg-citing” unit of
study. The class also created an interactive chick display outside their classroom for other Forest Brook students and classes to view and visit after they had completed their projects and technology extensions. The hallway display was interactive through the use of QR Codes, with more than 50 different QR Codes that can be scanned to bring the display to life.

After earning their Arrow of Light as a Webelo Scout, they selected to join Boy Scouts of America Troop 3. As members of Troop 3, Russell and Nicholas assumed various positions

Top Nurse Named Nurse leaders from Long Island’s hospitals and nursing education programs gathered Wednesday, May 17th at the Woodbury Country Club to bestow recognition upon their nurse peers at the Nurse of Excellence Award Ceremony hosted by the Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council (NSHC). One nurse from each of the Hospital Council’s member hospitals was nominated for the award, which recognizes outstanding leadership and clinical practice. Deans of area nursing schools also submitted nominations recognizing nursing excellence in education and clinical practice. Kings Park resident Lisa Koshansky RN, Nurse Manager Critical Care at St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center, rose above a field of 27 nominees. Those nominees were selected from a field of about 500 nurses at hospitals and teaching institutions from across Long Island.
Koshansky says her lifelong motto and inspiration as a nurse has been “do no harm.” Her drive for perfection has led the hospital’s critical care unit to remain free of central line-associated blood stream infection incidents since 2011 and without a ventilatorassociated pneumonia case since 2009. Her performance improvement efforts and leadership in this area have resulted in the hospital being recognized as a state leader in performance measures in sepsis identification and management. Additionally, she has led her colleagues in the intensive care unit and cardiac care unit in restraint reduction, achieving a restraint reduction of 75.7 percent to 4.75 percent in the ICU in 2016 and a restraint reduction from 38.3 percent to 2.8 percent in the CCU. Surprised to be chosen from among a field of so many outstanding candidates, Koshansky
said, “I love the profession of nursing. I am humbled to be in the company of such great nurses. When you listen to what other nominees have accomplished, you tend to look at what you are not instead of what you are.” “The most important person for patients in a hospital is the nurse,” said Kenneth Roberts, chair of the Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council and CEO of John T. Mather Memorial Hospitals. “Nurse are there 24/7 taking care of patients.” The Hospital Council’s annual salute to nurses is fashioned after the New York State Legislature’s Nurse of Distinction Program that ended in 1995. NSHC is one of the few hospital associations in the state to continue this program voluntarily. It is now in its 22nd year. The NSHC represents Long Island’s not-forprofit and public hospitals.

Raising the Flag There are many Memorial Day weekend traditions that people enjoy. Most of them tend to involve barbecues and beaches, bathing suits and sunbathing. Few take the time to truly appreciate the meaning of the holiday itself. I’ve written in the past of attending the annual service which takes place at Calverton National Cemetery, a mere two hours taken out of the weekend to pay respects to those who have come before us and sacrificed so much for this nation. This brought to mind another, perhaps less traditional, “ceremony” which my grandfather and great uncle used to enact each Memorial Day, and then again at Labor Day. Both veterans themselves, they had held on to their service uniforms and, ill-fitting as they were, would dig them out and don bits and pieces of them each year to take part in
the annual “flag raising” in my grandfather’s backyard. For as long as I can remember, there stood a flagpole at one end of the lush green lawn, and from that pole hung Old Glory, proudly waving in the wind, for the entire summer. My grandfather and uncle would unfurl this flag each May and, with a mix of reverence and humor as they paraded in their snug jackets and trousers, would carefully raise it – and then, salute proudly. Come September, this same succession of events would take place in reverse, and the flag would be carefully put away for another season. As a child, I can’t say I truly understood what was going on, nor did I appreciate the significance of the ordeal. Sure, there was a bit of tonguein-cheek humor to go along with the solemnity; but make no mistake; they took it all very seriously. Thankfully, there are

pictures from a few of these ceremonies… along with the memories to last a lifetime. Last summer, as my grandparents’ house stood empty for the first time in 56 years, a “For Sale” sign staked on the front lawn, the family gathered one late spring afternoon to begin the process of going through belongings. The ceremonies of days gone by a distant memory at this point, a somewhat tattered flag still hung from the pole. Inspired, the “children” decided to raise a brand new flag, one last time, in honor of my grandfather, and all the wonderful summers spent in that backyard. As for the old flag, the last one my grandfather had hung, I kept it. And each time I drive by the old house, now filled with a new couple starting their lives, I look to see if the old flagpole still stands. It does, and the flag remains.

On Thursday night at the Elks Lodge, Boy Scout Troop 111 of Nesconset hosted an Eagle Court of Honor in recognition of Peter Saviano’s achievement of the rank of Eagle Scout. Legislator Leslie Kennedy signed a proclamation in honor of this milestone achievement in scouting and presented the proclamation to Peter on the night of his Eagle Court of Honor. In order to obtain the rank of Eagle Scout, one
must accomplish a number of things in their Scouting life. A Scout must earn thirteen merit badges from an approved list, plus another eight of their own choosing, and he must complete a service project to benefit his community. To fulfill his community service project Peter took on the large task of rerouting a section of a trail at Sweetbriar Nature Center. The original trail was eroded due to natural forces and thus dangerous
to hikers, but Peter built a new one that was appropriately constructed in order to accommodate hikers. “Mr. Saviano is an impressive young man,” said Legislator Kennedy “I am proud of the work he has done to benefit Sweetbriar Nature Center, it was a big undertaking, and many people in the community will be able to benefit from it. Peter truly embodies the characteristics of an Eagle Scout.”
MATH TOURNAMENT - Five students from Mt. Pleasant Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District represented their elementary school at the 10th annual Suffolk County Math Tournament at Stony Brook University on May 11th. Horseshoe Tournament
On Saturday, May 6th, the Smithtown Recreation Department held its annual Singles and Doubles Spring Horseshoe Tournament at Brady Park. Despite all the rain during the week and the not so great weather forecasted on Saturday, we had 22 single horseshoe participants and 10 doubles teams participate in the event.
The winner of the Singles Tournament was Lou Malandra, with a record of 6-0. Lou beat Mike Nemschick Sr.in the finals. Mike finished in second place with a record of 4-2. William Whitehead finished in 3rd place. Greg Burns and William Whitehead were the winners of the Doubles competition. Greg &
William finished with a record of 5-0 as they defeated father and son duo, Mike Sr. & Mike Nemschick Jr. Congratulations to all the winners and to everyone who helped make this event so successful. Hope to see everyone at the Fall Horseshoe Tournament.
Fairy Tale Ball
It was a royal affair to remember as secondgraders at Dogwood Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District held a Fairy Tale Ball on May 23rd. As a culminating activity in their study of
fairy tales, the students dressed as their favorite fairy tale characters for the occasion. After spending weeks learning about the characteristics of fairy tales, writing different endings to fairy tales and analyzing the characters,

Recently, Legislator Leslie Kennedy hosted an e-waste removal event in conjunction Smithtown Library which provided a venue for the event, and with the help of e-Works. E-Works is a non-profit program that is part of Association for Habilitation and Residential Care (AHRC), so all of the proceeds go to workers with developmental disabilities and autism. As the days go on and as technology advances families accumulate both paper and old electronics that are no longer used, the e-Waste program creates a constructive way for people
in the community to rid themselves of this clutter. People of the community came out in full force on Saturday to participate in this event, a multitude of paper and electronic waste was collected and safely taken care of. E-Works has an extremely safe facility in Bohemia which only uses certified recycling processors and has 24 hour camera surveillance so that no one need worry about the safety of their electronic information. “E-Works is a fantastic program that provides a benefit for the community and it provides work for those who are seeking

They were: Maria AvilaFranklin of Nesconset with her project, An Educational Case Study: The Impact of Motivation on Latinas of Low Socioeconomic Status in the Pursuit of Higher Education, Sachin Devasahayam of Commack with his project, Affecting Behavior: The Effect of Positive Reinforcement and Punishment on Executive Function in High School Students, Nicole Messina of Selden, who studied Sleep and Cognitive Functioning: The Effect of Sleep Time on Short-Term Working Memory, Maureen Petica of Massapequa who studied
The Effect of Technology Use on Social Anxiety in High School Students, Marisa Pollock of Middle Island with her project The Effect of Teaching Style on Sport Skill Acquisition, Julial Romanelli of Smithtown with her study The Effect of Genre of Music on Speed of Cognitive Processing and Jennie Rostkowski of Oakdale with her project The Effect of Class Placement on the Big Fish-Little Pond Effect in High School Students. In addition to the seven presenters, seven juniors displayed the results of their projects and answered questions during a question and answer segment that was held during the program. The St. John the Baptist DHS GENESIS program allows students to pursue scholarly research in one of the fields of Science. Students apply for admittance to the GENESIS

As students’ progress, they choose a topic that they are interested in researching and are given ownership of that project. He stated “I am constantly amazed at what our St. John the Baptist students can achieve when given resources and opportunity.
