Sharing is Caring

Long Island panel discussion, highlighting the process which went into investigating a cold case that had gone unsolved for over 50 years on the east end of Long Island. The teamwork between reporters and the police department eventually resulted in the case being “cracked,” so to speak, and the unsolved murder put to rest. I bring this up not because of my fascination with true crime stories; but rather, it brought to light the importance of a component often missing in many lines of work, in life as a whole … that of collaboration. Often, the focus is on independence, on doing things one’s own way, with little room for input from others. Cooperation is key – this a concept taught to us from the first day of kindergarten on up, earlier even, as we begin to learn the process of sharing our resources (even if those happen to be building blocks or Barbie dolls). I don’t often have the

As I stood on the tarmac at Republic Airport last week, borrowed camera in hand, anxiously awaiting the arrival of the U.S. Navy Blue Angels, I scanned the crowd assembled. Veteran reporters mixed with fresh-faced interns, all waiting for a glimpse of the majestic planes. Some carried smart phones; others set up elaborate tripods and fiddled with expensive lenses, all determined to capture that “perfect” shot upon landing. Suddenly, there was a roar overhead. All attention was instantly focused on the sky, as cameras zoomed, record buttons were pushed and people jostled for a better angle. And then, just like that, they were gone, gliding to a landing on a distant runway before slowly taxiing toward us, where they would

No benefit to withholding information that, ultimately, we all desired to share with the masses. We may not have cracked a case that morning, but we demonstrated on a much smaller scale the beauty of cooperation, of teamwork. The stunning fighter jets aside, that may have been the most beautiful sight of all.

Creative Fundraising It is no secret that it is increasingly challenging for nonprofits to secure adequate corporate, local, state and federal funding to support their missions in these difficult economic times. Options for Community Living Inc. recently held two creative “fun-raising Options” in response to this ongoing challenge. The agency helped make Mother’s Day shopping easier with its annual plant and craft sale, which was held at the Options Thrift Shop in Ronkonkoma. Hearty annual, perennial and vegetable plants were available for purchase along with unique handmade

wreaths and much more designed and crafted by Options for Community Living residents. Children also had an opportunity to make a special gift for their mother, grandmother, aunt or any other special woman they wished to recognize on Mother’s Day. This past week, Options hosted a fundraising evening for more than 70 individuals featuring an evening with Shira – nominated “Best Psychic” by Bethpage Federal Credit Union 2018 Best of Long Island. In July 2010, the Dignity for All Students Act was signed into law to combat bias-based bullying, discrimination and harassment in public schools, and to ensure the right of every public school student to learn in a safe, welcoming, and caring environment. Eastern Suffolk BOCES, the Suffolk County InterFaith Anti-Bias Task Force, and the Suffolk County School Superintendents Association joined together and have been working in collaboration to ensure the guidelines and goals established by DASA are being effectively implemented in public schools throughout Suffolk County. One of their joint initiatives was to facilitate

a forum, which coincided with the fifth anniversary of the introduction of DASA, where Suffolk County school districts’ Dignity Act coordinators and district DASA coordinators could share their best practices in the areas of disseminating information to staff, students, and parents; the training of staff and students; prevention and response to events; and response to violations. Through an open dialogue, forum attendees shared and received valuable insight into effective practices, and the tools to enhance their own processes. “We believe that the best product is created through collaboration, and we are grateful to the Suffolk County InterFaith Anti-Bias Task

Force for sponsoring a forum where the best thinkers from Suffolk County came together,” said Suffolk County School Superintendents Association President Lars Clemensen. “From this collaboration was born a resource guide of best practices in the county for making sure students are free from bullying, harassment, and discrimination.” While there is much good work going on in schools across Suffolk County in compliance with DASA, there is always more that can be done and shared. As an outgrowth of this successful forum, a DASA resource guide, which is a compilation of best practices utilized in Suffolk County public

schools for the past five years, was created. National Merit Winner Smithtown High School East senior Cindy Li has been selected as a winner of a National Merit $2,500 Scholarship. Li was chosen as a one of 2,500 winners for the Merit Scholarship award among 15,000 finalists based on their abilities, skills and accomplishments. The

National Merit Scholarship Competition evaluates participants on their academic record, school’s curricula and grading system, two SAT scores, school official’s written recommendation, the finalist’s extracurricular activities, leadership and personal essay.

Community Vote Set On Wednesday, May 9th, the Board of Commissioners of the St. James Fire District voted to move forward with a public referendum to sell the Route 25A Firehouse to the St. James Fire Department. The community vote will take place on Tuesday, June 19th, from 3-9 p.m., at the Jefferson Avenue Firehouse, located at 221 Jefferson Ave. Nearly five years ago, the St. James Fire District purchased the Route 25A firehouse from the St. James Fire Department in an effort to reduce expenditures (previously, the fire district had been paying rent to the fire department). “Given the current state of the building and the fire district’s needs, maintaining ownership of this property is no longer a fiscally prudent option,” said Edward Springer, commissioner. “Selling it back to the department

would carry a number of benefits: the department, as they are under different laws and regulations than the fire district, would be able to expedite repairs and improvements to the facility, through use of its budget as well as private donations/grants – something that the district is prohibited from doing.” As the district’s contract from the original sale stipulates, and has been upheld by the New York State Supreme Court and Attorney General, the department has the right of first refusal should the district choose to sell the building. As such, and in line with this, the district has had ongoing discussions with the members of that department and its members have voted to approve to engage in the sale process. To complete the sale, it must now be put to a community vote, to be

held on June 19. It is important to note that if voters approve the sale of the firehouse to the fire department, there is no tax impact to the community. The St. James Fire District will host a community forum for residents within the district on Wednesday, May 30th, at 7 p.m., at a location to be determined. Notice of the finalized location will be posted to the Fire District’s website, www.stjamesfd.org, by Thursday, May 24th. Fire district commissioners and members of the fire department will present information about the sale, address the department’s future plans for the building and answer any questions regarding the referendum. Additional information regarding the sale will be sent home to all district residents in the coming weeks.

Fifth-grade students in Diana Lanze’s class at Mills Pond Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District spent May 21st engaged in different activities about Mexico. The students analyzed a map of Mexico to answer questions about its geography. They also

read a menu from local restaurant Cabo Fresh to solve real-world math problems involving calculating a subtotal, tip and tax. The students read an article and answered questions about border issues between the United States and Mexico. The class sampled

On Sunday morning, friends and family of Lt. Chris Raguso gathered at Hoyt Farm Park Preserve, to honor Lt. Chris Raguso as the first inductee to Heroes Hill, a memorial for volunteer firefighters, who gave the ultimate sacrifice in service to our Country. The unveiling of Heroes Hill took place prior to the inaugural Goose Fest 2018. The all day music festival helped to raise funds in support of the Raguso Family. “This is a symbol of our undying gratitude, our respect and reverence this community holds for Lt.

Chris Raguso and all who sacrificed everything to serve here at home and abroad. I want to personally express my deepest thanks to Jeff Gurmin, his team at Hoyt Farm and our Director of Parks, Joe Arico worked tirelessly to make this monument something we can all be proud of,” Supervisor Edward R. Wehrheim The unveiling ceremony was held for family and close friends to view prior to the public in time for the Memorial Day weekend. The monument is adjacent to the Veterans Memorial with a scenic view of the

park and playgrounds. The Heroes Hill engraving reads, “In honor of our volunteer firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country.” On the opposite side of the memorial the Punisher Skull, a symbol of honor and gritty determination, is engraved above Lt. Christopher J. Raguso, with the inscription “That Others May Live.” The first annual Goose Fest music festival was a huge success. All of the proceeds raised will go to benefit Master Sgt.Chris Raguso’s wife and two young daughters.

CPR Awareness Week National CPR and AED Awareness Week – June 1st through 7th, 2018 – aims to raise awareness and increase the number of people who perform CPR in cardiac arrest emergencies. Each year, more than 350,000 outof-hospital cardiac arrests occur in the United States. About 90 percent of people who suffer out-of-hospital cardiac arrests die. That’s why this year, the American Heart Association – the world’s leading voluntary organization dedicated to building healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke – is highlighting the importance of bystander CPR. When a person has a cardiac arrest, survival depends on immediately

receiving CPR from someone nearby. CPR, especially if performed immediately, can triple a cardiac arrest victim’s chance of survival. Higher bystander CPR rates have been linked to greater survival rates after a cardiac arrest. “Every second counts in cardiac arrest. Bystanders are absolutely critical in a cardiac arrest emergency. They start the American Heart Association’s out-ofhospital chain of survival by calling 9-1-1 and then providing early CPR with an emphasis on chest compressions, and finding the closest AED” said [Dr. Russell Schiff, Director of Ambulatory Pediatric Cardiology at Northwell Health and Vice President of the American Heart

Association’s Long Island Board of Directors “What if it were your mom or dad, your husband or wife, your sister or brother, your friend or someone standing next to you who was having a cardiac arrest? You would want to know what to do. So, if you see a teen or adult suddenly collapse, you won’t be afraid, your actions can help.” Only about 46 percent of people who experience an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest receive the immediate help that they need before professional help arrives. Many Americans don’t perform CPR because they don’t know what to do or they are afraid of hurting the person. To help increase the likelihood of people performing CPR in an

emergency, the Association recommends Hands-Only CPR, which has two easy steps. Step 1: Call 911. Step 2: Push hard and fast in the center of the chest until help arrives. The American Heart Association is marking this week here on Long Island by encouraging people to get trained in CPR to spotlight how lives can be saved if more Americans perform CPR and know how to use an AED. In 2007, the American Heart Association, in coalition with the American Red Cross and the National Safety Council, worked collaboratively to federally designate a National CPR and AED Awareness Week, which happens the first seven days of June each year.

In 2009, the American Heart Association launched a nationwide Hands-Only CPR campaign to raise awareness about this lifesaving skill. The campaign is supported nationally by an educational grant from the Anthem Foundation. Since 2012, nearly 10.1 million people have been trained in Hands-Only CPR via events, training kiosks and video education with the Anthem Foundation’s support. Starting in 2017, the American Heart Association partnered with leading organizations in the field of cardiac arrest to form the National Cardiac Arrest Collaborative, with the goal of promoting how to help in a cardiac arrest emergency. Teeing Off Against Cancer The American Cancer Society Kicked Off the 46th Year of Babes Against Cancer this week uniting more than 30 Golf and Country Clubs across Long Island to raise funds and awareness to support breast and prostate cancer. The event raises more than $1M annually and the collective support has surpassed $30 million dollars, making it the largest American Cancer Society fundraiser of its kind, thanks to the joint efforts of over 600

volunteers and 5,000 participants at 30 country clubs in the New York Metro area. More than 230 guests attended the official campaign launch for 2018 on Thursday, May 17th at the Glen Oaks Club, 175 Post Avenue, Old Westbury. Dollars raised through Babes Against Cancer supports the American Cancer Society’s work to save lives and provide support to everyone impacted by cancer -- from research to education,

prevention to diagnosis, and treatment to recovery. Awards in many categories support growth, innovative fundraising and dollars raised. This past year, the Top Award was presented to the Glen Oaks Club committee for raising a total of $236,326 in the past season. The runner-up was Fresh Meadow Country Club, who have collectively raised more than $2.8 M since the inception of the Babes campaign. Highlight of the day was the presentation of

the Sandy Award, named in memory of Sandy Zuckerman Rothstein, a breast cancer survivor who started the first tournament at The Muttontown Club in 1972. This year’s award was presented to Sandy Seltzer of Roslyn for her outstanding contribution to the Babes Against Cancer fundraising efforts at Fresh Meadow Country Club. About Babes Against Cancer: In its 46th year, BABES AGAINST CANCER

tournaments are organized and run by volunteer committees guided by an event Chairperson. Events are primarily golf tournaments, but tennis, bridge, Mah Jongg and bridge are all played to raise funds. Club events and income outcomes vary widely, ranging from $1,500 to over $200,000 per club, for a total of over 1.3 million in 2017. Scout Campout

“Hope you can make this exciting Troop Meeting & Campout….” And thus began the invitation to a great scouting and camping adventure for many of the newer scouts (as well as the older, more experienced scouts) of Boy Scout Troop 343 (Hauppauge). Starting the meeting at the campsite in Hoyt Farm (Commack), the scouts arranged for patrols cooking dinner using new Grilled Cheese Makers. During the course of the evening, there was instruction by the Instructors to set up the tents for the younger and new scouts. A flag ceremony was conducted at the flagpole on the Hoyt Farm parade field the sun was about to set. For the ninth year in a row, on May 11th, the Troop camped out at Hoyt

Farm to welcome the new scouts and help them with their rank advancements and for the scouts to bond with each other. Of the three new Webelos Scouts who had bridged into Boy Scouting this past February and March and who had joined Boy Scout Troop 343 from the local Cub Scout Packs, three camped out and by the end of the weekend most had earned their Scout rank and all earned some of the Tenderfoot and 2nd Class Rank requirements. The Senior Patrol implemented the patrol system on the trip and with the help of Assistant Scoutmaster Joe Merritt the scouts had planned, cooked, and cleaned up from their meals in three separate patrols with the Senior Patrol Leader and Assistant Senior Patrol Leaders being a 4th patrol

and the adults volunteer leaders the fifth patrol. Commented trip coordinator/Assistant Scoutmaster Joe Merritt, “This troop meeting/ overnighter was conceived by our scouts at a Patrol Leaders Council meeting. This troop meeting/ overnight camping trip allowed both older and younger scouts work together on rank advancements, knots, merit badge requirements, etc. It was a huge success. The older scouts and younger scouts worked side by side on rank requirements, we walked thru cooking demonstrations as well as patrol cooking (dinner was Grilled Cheese cooked over the campfire, and “Hungryman” for breakfast the next morning. Great job!”

Historical figures came to life in the cafeteria at Dogwood Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District when Danielle Neri’s class held their fifth-grade class

report, Google slideshow, poetry, and a portrait of their historical figure. As a culminating activity, the fifth-graders participated in a living wax museum. The students dressed like their character – with famous faces like Princess Diana, Walt Disney, Mozart and more – and once the visitors to the museum tapped them on the shoulder, their character came to life. Back in the classroom, invited guests had a chance to watch a video that was created using green screen technology. How To House-train Your Dog (NAPSI)—If you’re a pet parent to any of the country’s estimated 78 million dogs, here’s how to make house-training easier for both you and your pet. 1. Take your dog to the “bathroom” every one to three hours, as well as after he first wakes up in the morning or after a nap, after each meal, after being left alone for a stretch of time, and before going to bed. 2. According to that schedule or when your dog’s behavior indicates he has to relieve himself, ask him if he has to go with a simple phrase, such as “Go potty?” This

phrase should be unique to house-training to avoid confusion. 3. Take him on a leash outside and down the same path to your designated potty spot. 4. When you arrive, repeat the designated phrase and stay in that specific area for at least 15 minutes. 5. Once your dog has finished, praise him or give him a treat right away. Giving your dog immediate positive reinforcement is most effective; waiting until you’re back home can be confusing. 6. If your dog hasn’t successfully done his

business, bring him back to the house and keep an eye on him for 15 minutes. If he starts to go, you will be right there to get him outside quickly. Otherwise, bring him outside after those 15 minutes. 7. Keep your dog on a consistent feeding schedule to make his elimination schedule more predictable. 8. Supplement your training with dog pads. They are a great way to reinforce the specific areas that are designated for potty. Dog pads are also useful for those rainy days when your dog may not want to go outside.
