CONNECTING STUDENTS AND SENIORS - Always looking to make a connection with those outside of their school, the fourth grade members of the Cares Club at Mills Pond Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District spent the afternoon of May 15 gardening with the senior residents at St. James Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center. Walking from their school across to the center, students were ready with their shovels and smiles as they worked side by side in the outdoor patio garden of the center alongside the seniors. Smithtown High School East senior Ian Winkeler has been named a 2019 National Merit Scholar. He is among the 2,500 winners of the 2019 National Merit $2,500 Scholarship. The winners were selected from a pool of more than 15,000 finalists. Winkeler is a member of the National, Math, English and Tri-M honor societies. He also plays the alto saxophone in the school’s jazz ensemble. Winkeler is a member of the Quiz Bowl team and plays both volleyball and tennis. Outside of school, he is a certified EMT and a volunteer with the Nissequogue Fire Department. Winkeler will be attending Stony Brook University in the fall, majoring in biochemistry. National Merit winners are judged based on their accomplishments, skills and potential for success in rigorous college courses. The judges evaluate grades, difficulty of courses, standardized test scores, contributions and leadership both in school and in the

Welcomed Author #KidsNeedMentors author program, a Twitter group created by two authors and two teachers. The program matches teachers with mentor authors. There are more than 300 participants nationwide. Florence presented to the class about how she became an author, developing story ideas and the writing/editing
process. After the presentation, the students participated in a character development workshop, which helped them get an idea for how an author works on developing characters in their books and hopefully provide inspiration for their own writing.

Smithtown High School East’s ThINK discovery science research students competed at the International Science and Engineering Fair in Phoenix, Arizona, in May. Seniors Anthony D’Amore and Matthew Mullahy both received second place for their work in animal sciences and behavioral sciences, respectively. D’Amore studied the larger rules that dictate biological evolution by creating virtual endocasts
of crocodylomorph brains and evaluating the influence of habitat on brain shape. Mullahy traced the morphology, or shape, of mouse NG2 glia and microglia, types of neuronal cells, to evaluate their change as a response to depression. “The excitement of seeing both boys share the stage together was a tribute to the collegial atmosphere that is promoted in the ThINK program,” said Smithtown
High School East science research coordinator Maria Zeitlin. “We all work long hours together to create a community for intellectual pursuit and to seek the answers to questions that solve problems for our community as human beings on the planet.” This year’s Intel Science and Engineering Fair was the largest to date with 1,852 participants from around the globe.

MAGNETIC ATTRACTION - Fourth graders at Tackan Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District participated in an interactive lesson that “attracted” their attention on May 10. The Magnets to Go program, presented by Brookhaven National Laboratory, gave students the opportunity to experiment and hypothesize about magnets and their properties. Students learned about the science behind magnetic properties and electromagnetism. The fourth graders conducted experiments to discover magnetic and non-magnetic metals. They also explored magnetic properties such as north and south poles, magnetic fields, attracting and repelling forces, and how electromagnets and generators work.
