Still Missing The Meaning By: Jamie Lynn Ryan With the recent passing of Memorial Day, I thought it appropriate to resurrect an old column from 2006, as the sentiment remains the same no matter the year… I am willing to bet that there are many children who were probably raised to think the sole purpose of Memorial Day is strictly to roll out the barbecues, open the pool for the season, head to the beach for the first time and check out all those great sales. Pretty sad, when you think about it. Such a holiday is surely not a “happy” occasion in the traditional sense; although,
for most people, all that matters is that it qualifies as a paid day off. And there we are, off and running, blissfully unaware and increasingly unpatriotic as a result. When did this sense of apathy set it? Is it just a manifestation of the more recent generations, or is it representative of our country as a whole? Now, I’m certain there are many to whom this sentiment does not apply. Any veterans, or the family and friends of those who have served, are generally quite appreciative of such a day’s significance. I, for one, admit that I had never attended any kind of Memorial Day commemoration prior to this year when my family
decided to take a ride out to Calverton for the cemetery’s annual services. Sure, it was solemn, but you know what? So is the fact that hundreds of thousands of people have lost their lives over the course of the last several centuries in wars at home and abroad. Is it really asking too much to observe a day – a portion of a day, even – to appreciate that sacrifice? So, the next time some overly-commercialized holiday comes along, take a moment to reflect upon the reason why it was made a national holiday in the first place. I doubt it was to give people another excuse to have a barbecue.

first place while in second and third grades. Grant Faber, a third grade student at Forest Brook Elementary School, also won first place in the third grade division at the BNL Elementary Science Fair. His project Practice, Practice, Practice tested the age-old adage “Practice Makes Perfect.” Faber tested how daily practice of five minutes a day affected both academics and athletics. He measured how practice affected the amount of time required to complete multiplication and division problems. He also measured how practice affected the number of times he could dribble a basketball between his legs, and the number of times he could throw and catch a lacrosse ball – catching with his left and throwing with his right, and then catching with his right and throwing with his left. Faber discovered
that practice decreased the amount of time it took to complete the math problems and increased the number of consecutive basketball dribbles and lacrosse throws and catches he could complete. Matthew Dolce and Brendan Graf received Honorable Mention awards at the Brookhaven National Laboratory Elementary Science Fair. Graf is a first grade student at Pines Elementary School. His research project was titled Hang Up and Drive. Dolce, a fourth grade student at
Bretton Woods Elementary School, won an Honorable Mention for his project Memory Color Wars. More than 500 science projects from 120 Suffolk County schools were entered in the 2014 Elementary School Science Fair. BNL scientists, engineers, and technical staff as well as volunteers from the Long Island Matrix of Science and Technology and teachers from local elementary schools judged the projects.

Hauppauge School District is pleased to announce that Hannah Fioramonti and Grant Faber were first place winners at the 2014 Brookhaven National Laboratory Elementary Science Fair. Hannah Fioramonti is a fifth grade student at Pines Elementary School. Her science fair project, titled Hot and Cold Melodies, tested how temperature affected the intonation of an orchestra’s pitch. Fioramonti placed orchestral instruments in rooms at different temperatures and noted how the pitch was affected. She discovered that temperature affected each instrument differently. This is the third time that Fioramonti won first place at the BNL Elementary Science Fair, and she notably is the only female to ever win first place three times. She previously won

This week has been full of “lasts.” Today was my last Varsity Sports Award Dinner. Tomorrow is my last day of high school. As I write my last article of my high school years, I look back fondly on the memories that I have made and the bonds that I have formed. Even though I’ll be entering college soon, St. John the Baptist will always hold a special place in my heart. There are great people here. Tonight, at my fourth Varsity Sports Award Dinner, I felt like I was part of something bigger than just the Crew Team. I felt as if I was a member of the entire SJB family.
From the athletes to the athletic directors, the bond is strong. As I collected my AllState Award, I couldn’t help but feel nostalgic. It was the fourth, and final, time I would ever stand on that stage and hear my name read by my coaches. It was a bittersweet moment as I won several accolades. From that stage, I could see some of my classmates. They make up the group that has accompanied me in this great journey that culminates in just a few hours. Now, that part of my life is almost over. We are still in training for Nationals, but there will never be a team
that can influence me so greatly. Soon, I’ll be done with high school, and those same classmates will forget my name. The teachers will forget I existed. Only I will remember the wonderful times that I’ve had and the memories I’ve formed. I’ve loved every minute of this crazy ride. Each year, as we watched the seniors lock their lockers for the last time, I have said that I won’t cry when it’s my time. Now, I am welling up from just writing this article. From day one, this place has been my home. I’m going to miss it.

There will also be an hourly presentation of a
“Hope,” a multipanelled artwork created by three classes of visual art students at Usdan Center for the Creative and Performing Arts, was awarded a First Prize in the 2014 student art competition at the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center in Glen Cove, Long Island. The work was designed and built during the summer of 2013 at the renowned summer arts day camp, which is also an agency of the UJA-Federation of New York. It was conceived as a visual metaphor for the chronology of events that precipitated the Holocaust and its aftermath. her doctor suggested rehabilitation. Her only son Scott and his wife Ann Marie wanted mom to receive care near their home and to be sure she would be administered to properly. A good friend recommended St. Johnland Nursing Center. However, Ann had lived in her own home for 99 years
of an airplane “with propellers, of course”. She remembers the night sky- brilliant with stars before the lights of the city dimmed the view. Ann grew up climbing nut trees and fruit trees with her brother and neighbor children. The family had a big garden and chickens. Winter and summer Ann cooked and canned, dried herbs, made sausages and homemade breads and cakes-every meal was served with fresh ingredients - many from her garden. Ann attended New Rochelle College, but she decided not to stay. She had a head for business and managed household accounts. (Ann got her first credit card at age 80). At age 38 Ann married Bud Sayer, a man she admired for his knowledge of history and interest in everything. Bud was an avid reader and
adventurer. Through the years Ann worked at Bloomingdales in the fine jewelry department a few evenings a week. Ann had elegant fashion sense. She loved the work. Bloomingdale’s offered to promote her to management, but by that time Ann was in her early 70s and declined the position. Ann was active at the Pelham Senior Center for years. She did volunteer work in town making clothing and blankets for the needy. Ann was quite a seamstress and made many of her own stylish clothes. At age 101 Ann Sayer could be found 2-3 times a week shopping in local stores and playing bridge at “the seniors”. She often drove friends who needed a ride. She always had a smile and a bit of cheer for friends who were low. Although she never
disclosed her age, stage whispers continually leaked it out. No one could have guessed it otherwise. Ann’s complexion is still beautiful with few wrinkles. Until age 102 Ann still managed her house and gardens, hung laundry out to dry and did all her own “Italian Style” cooking. Her secrets to good health- “Everyday use the four: garlic, fresh lemon, extra virgin olive oil and Italian style parsley. At 106, Ann Sayer is in remarkable condition and enjoys a hearty appetite. She has all her hair, teeth, and suffers no pain except for a bit of arthritis. Due to heat stroke suffered four summers ago, her short term memory is nearly non-existent. But she knows all her family and friends and still remembers the old days!

Ann Virginia Sayer celebrated her 106th birthday at St. Johnland Nursing Center on May 6th of this year. Cognizant of family and friends, Ann enjoyed two parties with her loved ones. When Ann Sayer needed to be hospitalized for a blood clot in her leg in January of this year,
and the family was fearful of the transition. After a meeting with staff and a tour of the facility Scott and his wife agreed this would be the right place for his mom. Within a few days of being at St. Johnland, Ann began to thrive. She started lifting little weights, walking with assistance and talking with more lucidity than the family had noticed in many months and was receiving better care and more stimulation. Ann Sayer was born in New York City in 1908. Her parents and brother moved to Pelham in Westchester in 1915. Ann was seven years old at the time. Still today she can easily recall the main street with trolley cars rolling by. She remembers dirt side streets and woods and ponds, running into the backyard and looking up to see the rare sight

sorting, and boxing the donated food that was collected by the other Cubs and Scouts. The food variety included staples such as tuna and meats, vegetables, fruits, baby food, pastas, cereals, toilet paper, and bars of soap. All this food was distributed to more than two dozen local food pantries in the community and across Long Island. In these recessionary times, many families and people contributed food to the Scouts and in excess of 18,273 pounds of foodstuffs were distributed. The food (at 10 to 12 pounds per carton) was distributed to each of the participating district’s area food pantries to help restock their shelves. Matthew Schieferstein, Matinecock Scout District’s Food Collection and Distribution CoCoordinator for the Matinecock District, said, “On behalf of the Matinecock District. (B.S.A.) many thanks to the Commack, Smithtown, Northport, Hauppauge, East Northport, Kings Park, and Huntington area residents who contributed to the food collection
by the Boy Scouts of America during our 28th Annual Scouting for Food. Although these local food pantries have been given many days supply to assist the families in this area who are in need, they are still in need. Anyone who wishes to contribute is more than welcome to stop by and help resupply these food pantries with any canned or boxed items at any time during the year. A special thanks to the Elwood School District for the use of the John Glenn High School as our collection and distribution location.” Other Scouting volunteers added to Mr. Schieferstein’s remarks commenting, “Many thanks go to our neighbors in the community who assisted the Cubs and Scouts by generously donating food to the “Scouting for Food 2014” program. This is Scouting’s Good Turn for the community, but the Scouts of the Cub Packs and Boy Scout Troops and their volunteer leaders would like to say “THANK YOU!” to the community for the COMMUNITY GOOD TURN of all the donations of food and support.”
First Place Award Continued From 10 May 18th. The project was conceived by Usdan Art Department Chair Rochelle Morgan, who is a child of Holocaust survivors. It began with a visit to Usdan in August

It is another stellar year for the National Science League (NSL) students in Commack: Mandracchia Sawmill Intermediate School’s fifth grade team is #1 in the nation, and both the third and fourth grade teams took second place nationwide! Burr Intermediate School’s fifth grade NSL team also scored, taking second place in the contest. NSL students compete against other students on the same grade level from schools all across the United States, meeting weekly to prepare for the final competition. Each student on the team is individually
tasked with answering 40 questions, based on scientific terminology and facts, chemical compounds, and reactions. During the eight weeks prior to the competition, students conduct science experiments during a lunch-time enrichment program. The NSL experience is designed to maximize student opportunities to improve problem solving capabilities, and the Commack students have excelled again this year. Sawmill Principal, Michelle Tancredi, is very proud of the students. “This is fantastic news,” she said.
“In 2012, Sawmill’s fourth grade won the National Science League first place title for the fourth time, and the third and fifth grade took second place. Those third grade students are now the fifth grade national champs.” “These young science students are truly excited by the scientific process,” stated Commack’s Superintendent, Dr. Donald James. “This leads them to explore and test theories and promotes a love of learning that supports future deep scientific learning throughout their lives.”

Commack junior Andrew Kim brought home a silver medal from the 2014 International Sustainable World Energy, Engineering & Environment Project Olympiad (I-SWEEEP), held in Houston, Texas. Andrew qualified for the international fair after submitting his research paper and a recommendation from his mentor. His project involved developing a unique chemically treated sponge to absorb oil
contamination from water. He conducted his research at Stony Brook University, and his project was titled, a “Highly Efficient Sponge for Absorption of Contaminated Oil. “I-SWEEEP is one of the world’s largest international science fairs focusing on energy, engineering, and environment. Students from 66 countries displayed their projects at the George R. Brown convention center during the week of April 28th –
May 4th. Nearly 600 young high school researchers and 300 teachers traveled to Houston, committed to finding solutions to globe’s problems. A Scout is helpful, and in the days of shortages in the local food pantries, our area Scouts were out in force to try and change the situation. The Scouts of the Matinecock District (Boy Scouts of America) recently took part in the Annual Scouting for Food. Armed with paper bags from the King Kullen Supermarkets, Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Venture Crews, and members of the Nissequogue Chapter of Shinnecock Lodge, Order of the Arrow, participated in this effort to help stock the local food pantries. Canned and boxed goods were dropped off at the John Glenn High School in Elwood, the Matinecock District’s packing/ distribution center for the day, where Scouts and the Matinecock District Committee Members, manned the drop-off station with help during the day from other Scouts, adult volunteer Scouters, and local community members at the John Glenn H.S. This mix of Scouting volunteers and members of the Hauppauge to Huntington-area community participated in the loading, unloading,

They also wanted their artwork to pay tribute to two women who, in the face of extraordinary abominations, managed not only to salvage their existence but to subsequently live full and productive lives in New York. The result is a large lucite “box” of approximately six feet in length, painted on both sides by students who have depicted scenes that bring the sisters’ story to life. Each spring, the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center offers competitions for students centered on a theme of social justice, tolerance, and respect for diversity. The competitions offer students the opportunity to showcase their creative talents. Winning entries are exhibited at the Center and photographed for inclusion in its Competition Journal. The mission of the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County is to teach the history of the Holocaust and its lessons, through education and community outreach. These include the dangers of antisemitism, racism, bullying and all other manifestations of intolerance, promoting resistance to prejudice and advocating respect for every human being.
Usdan Center offers more than 40 programs in music, dance, theater, visual arts, creative writing, nature and ecology and chess, annually hosting more than 1,600 students from towns throughout the Tri-State New York area. No audition is needed for most courses, and transportation is provided in air-conditioned buses that depart from most New York-area neighborhoods. One-third of Usdan’s students receive scholarship assistance based on family need. Also, families can check out Usdan’s Facebook site, where additional information and late-breaking news is featured. Usdan Center for the Creative and Performing Arts has introduced the arts to more than 60,000 Tri-State Area children since its founding in 1968. The Center is open to all young people from age 6 to 18. Although the mission of the Center is for every child to establish a relationship with the arts, the unique stimulation of the Center has caused many to go on to arts careers.

on The Today Show. Valle’s dogs perform across the country, but as a friend of the Puppy Club’s Adviser Jennifer Nannery, she finds time in her busy schedule to perform at Hauppauge Middle School. In addition to being delighted and amazed by the incredible stunts performed by the rescue dogs, the Puppy Club and Best Buddies Club members raised approximately $250, which has been donated to Save-aPet – a Port Jefferson based animal shelter. Health, addressed the crowd before the walk. “Women are the CEOs of their families and yet often times, they go without taking care of themselves,” she told the crowd. “We need to educate ourselves about the differences in women’s health and understand that we are not the same as men, which is why the Katz Institute and Katz Women’s Hospitals are such vital assets to have in our community.” Superstorm Sandy compromised last year’s event with the closing of the Jones Beach boardwalk, so this year’s walk was not
only highly anticipated but celebrated. Walkers had an opportunity to visit the health and wellness showcase tent, enjoy entertainment provided by K98.3, grab a few snacks from the food and beverage tent and snap a few photos at the “flex station” at the end of our 5K Walk. Since the inception of the 5K Walk in 2010, close to $2 million has been raised for the Katz Institute and Katz Women’s Hospitals. Nearly 5,000 walkers descended on Jones Beach on Sunday for the fifth annual Every Woman Matters Walk: A Walk For Women and Their Families hosted by the North ShoreLIJ Health System and the Commerce and Industry Council. The walk benefits the Katz Institute for Women’s Health and Katz Women’s Hospitals, specialty hospitals and programmatic initiatives that are transforming women’s healthcare. Alexa Tiven and her sister, Nicole Mancini, were among the participants. They were walking in memory of their mother, Dianne Tiven, who lost her battle with cancer. “This event is very important to us as sisters, as aunts, as moms. Every woman matters!” said Alexa Tiven.
