Local nonprofit Girls on the Run Long Island will be holding its first Virtual 5K run for free on June 20, 2020 open to all who wish to participate. Traditionally a run held at Hofstra University to conclude the organization’s 10week program for girls, the Spring 5K became a virtual run in response to COVID-19 and social distancing regulations. With options to complete the 3.1 mile distance at “your place, your pace,” kids and adults alike are welcome to participate at no cost to them. By registering for the run at www.gotrlongisland. org/5k, participants will receive free downloadable goodies, such as a race bib to decorate and a finisher’s certificate. GOTR Long Island prize packs will also be raffled off, chosen from those who have registered,

on June 20. Leading up to the run, GOTR Long Island will share information about the run and fun activities on its social media channels, including Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter at @gotrlongisland. This will include training for walking or running the 5K, indoor alternatives, and safety tips along with fun activities usually seen at a GOTR 5K. The traditional Happy Hair, kid-friendly hair coloring, and Bling Your Bib activities will be included. A schedule of events will be released at a later date for the June 20 run and will be shared on social media.

Home renovation projects can pay numerous dividends. Renovations can have a positive effect on resale value, make homes more livable for residents and, in some ways, make homes more affordable. Renovation projects that aim to conserve energy can save homeowners substantial amounts of money. Such projects don’t often require considerable effort or even sizable financial investments, which can make homeowners skeptical as to just how much they can save after completing the project. The scale of a project may have little to do with how much homeowners will save. For example, the U.S. Department of Energy notes that a relatively effortless task like turning back a thermostat between 7° and 10° F for eight hours per day can save homeowners as much as $83 per year. A more labor-intensive task like planting shade trees saves homeowners an average of between $35 and $119 per year. When looking for ways to conserve energy around the house and save money, homeowners need not necessarily commit to expensive projects. The DOE notes that the following are some energy-saving projects and details what homeowners can expect to save after completing them. Covid-19 Online Bereavement Support Groups People are unable to grieve the loss of loved ones in ways they are used to. No wakes for Christians. No shivas for Jews. No three-day mourning periods for Muslims. That’s why Long Island’s two leading, county-based mental health organizations have begun offering online bereavement support groups designed to provide comfort, support, and “grief tools” to those who have lost loved ones to the COVID-19 virus. For more information and to register, go to www.bereavement.mhaw.org. Mandatory social distancing has sharply curtailed people’s ability to grieve in conventional, in-person settings. In the absence of the intimate contact typically associated with the mourning process, these remote, weekly bereavement sessions aim to mollify the pain of individuals whose family members or close friends have succumbed to COVID-19. The “COVID-19 Bereavement Support Group” initiative is hosted by the Suffolk County-based Association for Mental Health and Wellness and the Mental Health Association of Nassau County. Guided by experienced grief counselors, the groups will convene remotely in 60or 90-minute sessions via a secure Zoom line over the course of a four- or six-week period. There is no cost to take part and registration – which is limited to 12 participants per group – is on a first-come basis. “As everyone can imagine, losing a loved one to the virus is a deeply painful and jarring experience,” said Michael Stoltz, C.E.O. of the Association for Mental Health and Wellness, which is headquartered in Ronkonkoma. “We’ve identified skilled and sensitive grief counselors who are well qualified to help participants build comforting pathways for healing, even in a technologically remote setting.” “The pandemic’s restrictions largely prevent mourners from experiencing the reassuring feelings of hugs and other types of close-up contact,” said Jeffrey McQueen, Executive Director of the Hempstead-based Mental Health Association of Nassau County. “Grieving remotely can’t fully replace the face-to-face experience, but it can help reinforce feelings of hope and help fill the void.” Participants in any of the five COVID-19 Bereavement Support Groups must be mourning the loss of a family member or close friend who has died from COVID-19. The group categories are: Grieving Adults Support Groups: For people who have lost a loved one to coronavirus and cannot grieve in person with their loved ones. The group will bring together others who are struggling to come to terms with the loss, to create a sense of closure, and to grieve in community. There will be two groups in this category. Peer Bereavement Support Group: For individuals experiencing a mental health condition who have lost a loved one to coronavirus. Participants have a safe and supportive space to share their stories with others who can truly relate to their pain and experiences. Veterans Bereavement Support Group: For Veterans and their families who have lost someone to coronavirus and cannot grieve in person with their loved ones. This group will deal with issues specific to the Veterans community. The organization is on a mission to help even more veterans through

the pandemic, but they need the public to team up with them to help make it happen. “We fight to save lives on both ends of the leash, and we are honored to be able to help Hank and other veterans just like him,” added Walis. “We use the donations that people give to us to help vets and pets. this time there are many veterans who could use some additional supplies or assistance, and we will continue to what we can to help them. Cuomo asked for ingenuity, Nathan took the lead in helping others. His talent motivates walkers at Jones Beach each October during Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, and today his talent and his commitment to service is keeping others safe. “The American Cancer Society strives to create a culture of gratitude for all volunteers,” says Marie Cimaglia, Director of Community Development on Long Island and NYC. “This National Volunteer Week, we take an extra moment to express gratitude to each and every volunteer who has joined our mission, and the mission to help us through this pandemic,” she said. Cimaglia continues by saying that during this difficult time, cancer won’t stop; and neither

will we. “Despite cancelled events, the cancer-fighting work of the Society continues,” she said. As the COVID-19 crisis grows larger every day, cancer patients – many of whom already have compromised immune systems - are more vulnerable than ever. It’s every writer’s dream to have their work published, but it’s even more of an honor when a middle school student finds out they will soon become a published author. Ariana Glaser, an eighth grade student at Great Hollow Middle School in the Smithtown Central School District, was recently notified that her book “She Remembers” will be published by Foundations Book Publishing. Glaser received her letter of acceptance in mid-May and is excited to share her work with the world. “Writing has been such a huge part of my life for so many years, and finally being able to share my writing with everyone is more than I could ever ask for,” she said. Glaser began writing short stories at the age of 7, and when she turned 11, she finished writing her first full-length novella, “The World I Never

Glaser knew that “She Remembers” deserved more attention than what she would achieve through self-publishing. “I searched for a publisher for ‘She Remembers’ for several months before Foundations Books offered me a publishing contract,” she said. “To say I was overjoyed would be an understatement. I am already working on my third novel, a mystery involving a dystopian society.” According to Glaser, “She Remembers” is dedicated to Isabella Muntean, a 15-year-old who she knew through social media who passed away from cancer in April 2018. Bella founded Angel Heart of Hope, a charity dedicated to helping childhood cancer victims. Glaser hopes her book calls attention to the plight of these children.

FASNY Offers Lifesaving BBQ And Grilling Tips During Lockdown

As New Yorkers are beginning to emerge from “New York on Pause,” and looking towards nicer weather, many will be dusting off and firing up their grills for the first time in months. The Firemen’s Association of the State of New York urges all New Yorkers to follow some basic rules and tips to avoid accidents and injuries, and to remember not to hesitate to call for help needed. “The warmer weather will certainly encourage New Yorkers to break out their BBQ’s for some outdoor cooking,” said FASNY President Steven Klein.  “We want all residents to stay safe as we emerge from quarantine and heed some basic safety tips. We also remind everyone to continue to follow social distancing

rules to keep their families and other families safe for the coming months.” According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), from 2014-2018, an average of 19,700 patients per year went to emergency rooms because of injuries involving grills and gas grills were involved in an average of 8,900 home fires per year, including 3,900 structure fires and 4,900 outdoor fires annually. Keep everyone safe by following the important tips below. Tips from the NFPA and FASNY: Propane and charcoal BBQ grills should only be used outdoors. The grill should be placed well away from the home, deck railings and out from under eaves and overhanging branches.

Keep children and pets at least three feet away from the grill area. Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grills and in trays below the grill. Never leave your grill unattended. Always make sure your gas grill lid is open before lighting it. The American Cancer Society’s cadre of 1.5 million dedicated volunteers are not only helping fight cancer but using their skills in unique ways to help those affected by Coronavirus. Nathan Levinton is a career counselor for the National Guard. His passion for music has led to a part time job as a DJ, to which he regularly volunteers to play music in support of American Cancer Society events such as Making Strides Against Breast Cancer and Relay For Life. These days, the Medford resident has a new way of giving back to the community through his hobby as a 3D printer. When the COVID-19 crisis began and with supplies in demand, Nathan decided to utilize his resources to create face shields for medical professionals and first responders. The response has been so great that he is finding it hard to keep up. He’s already donated 170 face shields and 150 mask extenders plus has another 6-dozen ready for use in Suffolk county. Healthcare Heroes at Good Samaritan Northwell Health To Delay Hospital Get Energized with Meals Payments For Patients by PSEG Long Island Financially Impacted By Covid-19 Over theProvided past few weeks, in the March of Dimes requiring care. Northwell Health, New York State’s largest health care provider and the state’s largest private employer, today announced that it would delay payments with zero percent interest for a minimum of 60 days for those patients who receive medical services and have been financially impacted with the loss of a job, lost wages or other financial distress resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. Northwell has been on the front lines and among the first US health systems to test and treat for COVID-19. The health system is taking this financial step to help alleviate the economic pressure and stress so many families are experiencing as a result of the COVID-19 crisis. “We are first and foremost an organization committed to the health and well-being of the communities we serve,” said Northwell Executive Vice President and Chief Business Strategy Officer Richard Miller. “We live and work here too and are cognizant of the impact the virus is having on people’s physical, mental and financial health. PSEG Long Island has been helping to energize our healthcare heroes by providing catered meals, snacks and sports drinks to local hospitals, nursing homes and healthcare facilities on the front lines of the coronavirus pandemic, including to the ER staff at Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip. During National Nurses Week (May 6-12) and throughout the month of April, dinners, lunches and breakfasts, along with uplifting thank you notes from PSEG Long Island employees, have been sent to daytime and overnight staff caring for COVID-19 patients across Long Island. To date, more than 300 meals have been provided at a dozen facilities from the Hamptons to the Queens County line. The healthcare workers are most appreciative and send their return thanks with photos of them with the meals. The initiative will provide several hundred meals at more than 30 health facilities across Long Island and the Rockaways to bring cheer and sustenance to healthcare workers during this difficult time. “Normally during this time of the year, you can find our employees in bright orange T-shirts, gardening for Island Harvest, walking

The Charity of The Month for May is: Guardians of Rescue to get food for their pets. However, Paws of War will at times arrive at their homes with no warning, knock on their door and tell them that they have some items to drop off for them. “You always see that tear in their eye” says Robert. “That someone actually cares enough to come to their home and bring them something is very special.” A lot of these veterans suffered for many years, all of which now have lifelong disabilities due to their service to our country. Paws of War feels that at the very least they can bring them pet food to give them a helping hand during these tough times. Additionally, Paws of War has partnered with Cambridge Catering, who is providing hot cooked meals free of charge to our veterans. Hank, a Smithtown resident and veteran, was someone that Paws of War helped. When they arrived at his home, they noticed a his two very proud flags were destroyed. They handed off the pet food and trays of hot food that Cambridge Catering has provided, but they didn’t stop there. Guardians of Rescue is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Their mission is to facilitate and foster programs and activities that further the unique benefits of interaction between people and animals. We are all aware of the toll that this pandemic is having on people, yet the impacts are being felt beyond humans. Animals are also being impacted in numerous ways by this situation. Guardians of Rescue has been dealing with the Covid Crisis in many different ways, such as helping people feed their pets and taking on the responsibility to care for homeless animals. They have even stepped out of their realm of helping animals to assist seniors during these trying times. They are overwhelmed by the amount of assistance needed and their phones are ringing non-stop. So many people have had their employment impacted by the virus, therefore donations have been down. This makes it difficult for them to continue feeding the animals, building doghouses, taking in new rescues and trying to cover all their expenses. “The pandemic has created a host of problem for the animals,” says Robert Misseri, President of this organization. “I hope that we can make it through this difficult time, so that we can continue to help the animals in need.” Robert is also the President of Paws of War, another non-profit right here on Long Island. This organization trains and places shelter dogs to serve and provide independence to our U.S. military veterans that suffer from the emotional effects of war. In turn, each veteran can experience the therapeutic and unconditional love only a companion animal can bring. Throughout this pandemic, they have been tending to the most at risk veterans. They find that their older senior veterans typically are very prideful and refuse to ask for any handouts. Many live alone and will still go out and put themselves at risk

The CDC says household hydrogen peroxide at 3 percent concentration can deactivate rhinovirus, the virus that causes the common cold, within six to eight minutes of contact. Coronavirus is easier to destroy than rhinovirus, so hydrogen peroxide may be effective
