ith the recent death of NYPD Police Officer Brian Moore and the killing of police officers around our country, the Commack School District is encouraging community residents to show their support for those who serve and protect us on a daily basis through its Ribbons of Respect campaign. School and community members are encouraged to tie blue ribbons on the trees on their property as a show of thanks and support.

Helpful Donation Shelter Island High School students, along with group advisor Janine Mahoney, have been long time supporters and volunteers of Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk’s Student Build Program. Most recently, the district received a donation from Shelter Island Presbyterian Church in the amount of $1,300, which they gifted to Habitat. Over
the years, the school has raised more than $9,000 and hundreds of SIHS students have participated in the program. In addition to their volunteer efforts the school has donated new building supplies and tools to Habitat projects. Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk encourages youth of all ages to get involved in the Long Island community. Each year,

Hauppauge High School is proud to announce that seniors Luke Farrell and Sarah Jacobs competed in the International Sustainable World’s Energy, Engineering, and Environment Project Olympiad (ISWEEEP) in Houston, Texas, May 8th to 10th, 2015. Their project, titled “Machine Learning’s Application to Epidemiological Surveillance: A More Effective Means to Monitor the Spread of the Influenza Virus,” won First Place in the Environment’s Health and Disease

Farrell’s and Jacobs’ revolutionary project was conducted “in house” at the High School and successfully demonstrated a method to predict flu outbreaks on both a regional and municipal scale a full two weeks ahead of the CDC using a neural network and Tweets pulled from Twitter. If used, this method could save more than $50 million annually and would allow cities and hospitals to prepare for outbreaks with increased staffing and

Civil War Encampment
Smithtown Historical Society once again raised the flag in a continuing effort to educate students about the American Civil War. The organization was proud to once again host its Annual Civil War Encampment. Each spring the society teams up with Long Island Civil War Reenactors to present this living history event. On Friday, May 15th, more than 1,100 students from across Long Island traveled to Smithtown and back in time to experience the sights & sounds of our country’s Civil War. The society’s historic 22 acres of ground served as
a beautiful poem, while Samantha illustrated an eye-catching poster. Both entries captured the spirit of the CAPS message: Every child has the right to feel safe in school, at home, online and in the community. CAPS is Long Island’s leading non-profit dedicated to the prevention of bullying, child abuse and neglect, and the only

They shared historic interpretation of the buildings and how each had a significant part in Smithtown and Long Island’s history. Sawmill Intermediate School’s Student Council spent their free time tying blue ribbons around the trees on the school’s grounds to show their support and respect for the all police officers. The
students hope to show the many law enforcement officers who are living in and around the Commack area how much they are appreciated. Suffolk County Legislator Robert Trotta and other local officials, as well as a representative from the St. James Fire Department, 4th Police Precinct, the Long Island Exotic Car Club and members of VFW Post 395 came out to salute Boy Scout Troop 301’s newest Eagle Scouts. The national anthem was sung by St. James resident Caitlin Beirne, whose brothers, Thomas and Christopher, are also Eagle Scouts in Troop 301. Luke Cocchi’s constructed an 8 foot by 40 foot closet with a roof, which sits on the stage in the gym of St. Patrick’s School for his Eagle Scout
Project. The closet is composed of three separate compartments to be used by the school’s drama club, youth group and custodial staff. Luke designed it to look like an old fashioned school house. For his Eagle Scout Project, Nick Takach built four gun safety stands and a gun rack for the Suffolk County Hubbard Park. Nick designed the stand to keep the shooter from being able to swing the gun around and to always keep the gun pointed in a safe direction. Ross Panagiotopoulos did his Eagle Scout Project for the St. James Fire Department, where he constructed a wood
framed kiosk that provides important information about 9/11 Memorial. He also used a steel column from the North Tower of the World Trade Center for the centerpiece “This is a tremendous honor to be bestowed on these young men while they are still in their teens. It is an award that they will have for the rest of their lives and, today, at this Eagle Court of Honor, they have made their families, scout leaders, fellow scouts, community and government officials very proud,” said Suffolk County Legislator Robert Trotta.

Eyes On The Sky By: Jamie Lynn Ryan At this time of year, I usually write a column on the importance of appreciating Memorial Day for its intended purpose, to honor those who have served and sacrificed. Too easily do we as a society become swept up in the “unofficial summer kickoff” mentality, of BBQs and pool openings and the beginning of beach season. That said, there is one other Memorial Day tradition that I do truly enjoy, which mixes the significance of the occasion with some good oldfashioned fun in the sun. I am speaking of the Jones Beach Air Show, held each year on the Saturday and Sunday of Memorial Day weekend. I’ve been attending the
show for the last seven years or so, enjoying the alternating featured performances of both the Thunderbirds and the Blue Angels. As a member of the press, I was even lucky enough to have the opportunity a few years back to meet and greet the Blue Angels’ pilots at an exclusive preview held at Republic Airport. What an extraordinary experience! The great part is that the show never gets old. The camaraderie of sitting on the sand, eyes to the sky, with tens of thousands of fellow spectators is something special. Over the last several years, I have endured everything from severe sunburns to shivering under layers of clothing, buried under my beach blanket… from breezing right in to a prime oceanfront spot to being
forced to park on the median of Ocean Parkway after sitting in traffic for hours. Each year, no matter the conditions, I have been able to capture stunning photographs and, most importantly, to make happy, lasting memories with friends. Sure, it may be a frivolous, fun day at the beach; but ultimately, we are appreciating the grand spectacle of our military aircraft at its finest. It is a beautiful site to behold, one that everyone should make a point of taking in at least once in his or her lives. This weekend, I plan to join the masses in making my way to Jones Beach once again – armed with sunscreen, and several extra layers of clothing – just in case. Happy Summer to all!

Hauppauge Middle School students are learning yoga techniques and are introduced to the lifetime practice of yoga as part of their Physical Education and 8th grade Health curricula. “Yoga is not just about working out; it’s about healthy lifestyle,” described Hauppauge
Middle School Physical Education Teacher Tracy Borchers. “Students are taught that yoga is a very valuable way to manage their stress levels. It helps not only relieve stress but allows you to feel relaxed, boost confidence, lower the risk of injury, increase flexibility, helps lose weight, improves muscle
tone and strength and also can lower blood pressure. It is also crucial to social emotional learning.” The Hauppauge School District will introduce the practice of yoga into Bretton Woods, Forest Brook and the Pines Elementary Schools starting in fall 2015.
It is in this very moment where we must take a stand for what we believe in - whether it be happiness, success, traveling, relationships or making a difference. took to grow. A few months stroll by. The tiny seed transforms into an entity, astounded by others and blossomed to inspire others to aspire to do the same. I believe we are here for a reason. To create, build, make and invent. We are artists. We create how we live day in and day out. You possess the paintbrush of change, possibility and creativity. Part of other experiences occurring in our lives are inevitable; however, how we react is in our control. When there are dark skies, there are the brightest of stars. When there are heavy rains, there are the most breathtaking of rainbows. So, fellow reader, are you planting your seeds on mother earth - the place we call home? Because our bodies are capable of anything. It is our minds we must convince. The resources required are directly in front of us: The natural sun, plentiful water and the soil by which our feet rests. It all starts with one, single seed.

Grant Received The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, Inc. (LICADD) was awarded a $25,000 grant from the Long Island Community Foundation for the Military Families in Training (M-FIT) Program. Given the stressful nature of the military and the traumatizing experiences of war, many veterans experience psychological distress that
is complicated by substance use. Many of these veterans are experiencing serious mental health concerns including substance use disorders (SUD) posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), traumatic brain injury, depression and serious psychological distress (SPD). Sixty-two Hauppauge High School students recently were recognized for their Perseverance, Optimism, Work Ethic, Empowerment and Resilience (POWER) by administrators and staff members. The POWER of One Award was created last year by the Student Empowerment Subcommittee of the Youth and Community Alliance Committee. The brainchildren of the POWER of One Award were a group of students who believed in the importance of recognizing extraordinary students who displayed the qualities found in the POWER acronym. Hauppauge High School Assistant Principal Joy Ferrara described “what make the recipients extraordinary is their ability: • To persevere in the face of adversity; • To remain optimistic in spite of encircling negativity;

The Art League of Long Island’s Summer Portfolio Program, now in its 20th year, is back with a new lead instructor and a fresh new approach. Under the direction of Artist/Instructor Nikki Girgenti, teens ages 1417 will be able to fully immerse themselves in the creative process, develop a sense of camaraderie and community with their fellow artists, and expand their portfolios as they strive to set themselves apart as artists.
The Summer Portfolio Program will help students understand the importance and the dynamics involved in creating an above average art portfolio, given the competitive nature of the college admissions process. Studies in observational drawing, figure drawing, mixed media, watercolors, acrylic, printmaking, digital photography, landscapes, book arts, found object art, sculpture, and alternative techniques will be explored. Students will enjoy unique experiences, such as mock
portfolio reviews, creating digital portfolios, guest speakers, and much more. This is a great opportunity for high school students to spend time developing their portfolios; whether they plan on applying to a BFA program, intend to submit an art supplement, or simply want to add to their breadth of artwork as they prepare for AP or IB art courses in High School. The Summer Portfolio sessions take place 9:30am to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Art
League’s center in Dix Hills in two 3-week sessions: July 6th-24th and July 27thAugust 14th. Nikki Girgenti is an accomplished artist and educator who earned her MA at Stony Brook University and BA at Dowling College. With nearly a decade of teaching at the Art League, including two years of administrative experience in the League’s Summer Art Adventure Program, and eight years of teaching high school art, Girgenti brings a fresh
