New York Blood Center Announces A Blood Emergency donations each day to treat patients ranging from trauma victims to newborn babies and their mothers to cancer patients. Donors with type O and type B blood are especially needed as NYBC currently has a 1-2 day supply of these blood types. “With thousands of

acquired Little Portion Friary in Mount Sinai in 2016 as a means of increasing their ability to serve more young men struggling with opioid addiction. This program assists in the development of a life plan with short and long term goals. It also promotes the development of interpersonal skills. The length of stay varies based on need, averaging 12-18 months. Each person is treated individually by professional clinical staff. Montfort Therapeutic Residences: This is an intensive therapeutic treatment facility for children ages 11-18 who find themselves caught in the family court system. These children come to them at a time of great crisis in their young lives. Montfort Therapeutic provides the young residents with a healthy, stable environment, a school program, individual counseling, group dynamics and educational recreational outings. The program also includes aftercare services for children returning home. Pax Christi: This emergency shelter offers guests who are homeless a safe alternative to the streets. Pax Christi offers case management, drug and alcohol counseling, mental health counseling, linkages to benefits and resources in the community, as well as the basics of food and shelter. Over 50 active volunteers assist with cleaning, making beds, painting, serving meals and providing food and clothing for guests. HHM is truly a selfless and heartwarming non-profit right here on Long Island. No one should ever feel that they need to suffer alone, that they are not being heard, that they can’t ask for help or that they are hopeless. Hope House Ministries (HHM) is a nonproﬁt organization located in Port Jefferson. They provide compassionate, comprehensive and competent care for the poor, the marginal and the wounded among us. This commitment is woven in the Gospel vision that all life is sacred and every human person is unique and has the right to be respected and protected. They have accomplished much over the 40+ years they have been helping others with minimal ﬁnancial assistance from federal, state or county agencies. They depend on the generosity of private contributions, fundraising events and corporate donations. Hope House Ministries services people in both Nassau County and Suffolk County, offering services free of charge. Together, their staff and volunteers have created an empowering sense of family and community that are the change agents, helping young people grow in self-discipline, critical thinking, problem solving skills and personal responsibility. Suffolk County Legislator Susan A. Berland (D-Dix Hills) and her colleagues in elected office joined with representatives from the Suffolk County Alliance of Chambers and Laborers Local 66 at Blydenburgh County Park to announce the launch of the “Suffolk County Canoe and Kayak Storage Rack Pilot Program”. Together, they unveiled the first of six storage racks for canoes and kayaks which will be located at various parks and beaches across the county beginning Memorial Day. This initiative, spearheaded by Majority Leader Legislator Berland, will allow residents to rent a space to lock their kayak or canoe for the entire season, making it easier and more convenient for them to enjoy the water in our county parks and beaches. The program was unanimously approved by both the Suffolk County Parks Trustees and then the Suffolk County Legislature at the May 11th General Meeting. The material and labor used to construct the racks were generously donated. The material by the Suffolk County Alliance of Chambers and the labor by Laborers Local 66. The program allows residents to purchase a seasonal sticker to place on their canoe or kayak. They will then be assigned a specific storage rack location and are responsible for providing their own device(s) to secure the canoe or kayak to the rack. The season will run from Memorial Day through Columbus Day and spaces will be assigned on a first come first serve basis. DECA recently hosted its annual International Career Development Conference virtually for more than 17,000 international students. Smithtown High School East DECA students Lilly Chai and Samantha Micozzi ranked in the top 20 in the world in their respective events. Their road to ICDC started in September by preparing for their respective

competitions. The Suffolk County virtual regional competition was hosted in January, where the students qualified to compete at the New York State virtual conference held later that month. Based on their performances at the state competition of more than 2,000 students, Chai and Micozzi were among 18 students from Smithtown High School East and Smithtown High

School West who competed at ICDC. Chai competed in the quick serve restaurant management where she took an exam and was given two roleplay scenarios with 10 minutes to solve a problem presented to her. Micozzi participated in the professional selling competition, creating a company that could adapt to a virtual environment.

COVID-19 Emotional Support Helpline The Association for Mental Health and Wellness (MHAW) – Suffolk County’s largest not-forprofit provider of programs, services, and advocacy for people facing mental health challenges – is offering an Emotional Support Helpline staffed by trained crisis counselors who help callers talk through their emotions and find resources to help them cope with challenges associated with COVID-19. MHAW is serving as a Suffolk County partner agency in the helpline initiative hosted by NY Project Hope, a program of the New York State Office of Mental Health. The Emotional Support Helpline is 631-471-7242 ext. 1800. Trained crisis counselors are available Monday through Friday between 9:00 am and 7:00 pm. All helpline

conversations are free, confidential, and anonymous. “The Emotional Support Helpline will connect you with someone who has been trained to hear what you are saying and give you the kind of support that works best for you during the pandemic,” said Tara Fredericks, MHAW’s Director of Special Projects who is also overseeing Project Hope for MHAW. “They can offer coping strategies, supportive resources, or simply a chance to talk.” “As the leading mental health agency in Suffolk County, we’re proud that MHAW is wellpositioned to play a leadership role in this timely initiative,” said Colleen Merlo, CEO of MHAW. “People don’t need to grapple with these stresses on their own. NY Project Hope is offering great value during this difficult

period.” In addition to the Emotional Support Helpline, NY Project Hope helps New Yorkers understand their reactions and emotions during the COVID-19 pandemic through digital educational materials, a supportive social media presence, and a website with resources and relevant materials at www.nyprojecthope. org. NY Project Hope can also be followed on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. Other partner agencies in Suffolk County include the Northside Center for Child Development in North Bay Shore, Hispanic Counseling also in North Bay Shore, the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless in Amityville, and the Empowerment Collaborative of Long Island in Central Islip.

Autism And Children According to the National Autism Association, autism is a bio-neurological developmental disability that affects the normal development of the brain in various areas. Those areas include social interaction, communication skills and cognitive function. Autism generally appears before a child reaches his or her third birthday, and the NAA notes it is diagnosed

four times as often in boys than it is in girls. Roughly 40 percent of children with autism do not speak, but parents whose children speak between the ages of 12 and 18 months should know that such youngsters can still ultimately be diagnosed with autism. In such instances, the NAA notes that children lose the words they previously learned. Incidences of autism

appear to be on the rise, though the reasons for that remain unclear. According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the prevalence of autism had risen to one in every 59 children by 2018. That’s twice as great as the rate in 2004, when the CDC reported one in 125 children were diagnosed with autism.
