Forest Brook Elementary School students and staff gave a rock-star-style greeting to the ALS participants in the 2016 ALS Ride for Life. Cheers and chants of “You can do it!” and “Don’t give up the fight!” resounded as students and staff assembled on the school’s bus circle to welcome and support the riders. Forest Brook was honored to once again be a designated stop along this year’s Ride for Life journey in which ALS patients ride their electric wheelchairs down the highways and local streets from Greenport, New York to Washington Square Park in New York City. Their mission is to raise public awareness of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), assist research in finding a cure, support ALS patients and their families and provide the ALS community with the latest ALS related news, information and inspiration. point total by 100. The containers were emptied and counted daily, and the totals were posted in the school’s front hallway. By the end of the Change Challenge, in addition to staff donations, Forest Brook had raised $800, which was donated to Ride for Life, Inc.

Pounding the Pavement The Mills Pond Cares Club at Mills Pond Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School held a walkathon on May 12th to raise money to purchase a playground set for the children at a hospital in El Salvador. Each year, the Cares Club chooses one organization for its fundraising efforts. This school year, the club chose Medical Mission International in El

Salvador. Close to 60 fourth- and fifth-graders participated in the walkathon and raised $4,242, above their initial goal of $3,900 to cover the cost of the playground set. Medical Mission International provides immediate medical and surgical care to people in underserved regions of the world who have limited access to health care services, particularly to

women and children. Their current projects are based in rural El Salvador. Earlier in the year, Cares Club members organized a Museum Walk, displaying photographs, language, geography, foods and toys from El Salvador. The art classes in Mills Pond have been creating artwork from El Salvador to further enrich this study.

Danielle was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease at 9 years old. It took a few years for her to get on the right medication and get her disease under control. Like many she has had many ups and downs. Danielle’s parents have always tried to keep things “normal” in her life and have never let her use my medical condition as a crutch. “I have been involved with CCFA for 5 years and love participating in the annual Take Steps Walk,” says Danielle. “I accepted the honor of being the 2016 Shining Star because I want to be a role model for that other nine-year-old girl. I want to show kids that Crohn’s shouldn’t hold you back; it should push you to do better things and be a better person.” The Take Steps for Crohn’s & Colitis Walk is the nation’s largest event dedicated to finding cures and raising awareness for digestive diseases. Our Take Steps walks offer an incredible day for family, friends and the community to celebrate all of the efforts that have been put forth in raising funds towards our mission. It is a day that combines high energy and fun with access to valuable information and education. On Saturday, May 7th, the Smithtown Recreation Department held its annual Singles and Doubles Spring Horseshoe Tournament at Brady Park. Despite all the rain during the week and the not so great weather forecasted on Saturday, we had 19 single horseshoe participants and 9 doubles teams participate in the event. The winner of the

Homeless Shelter Visit In an effort to continually strengthen the community-school connection, the robotics team from Smithtown Central School District visited the Family Service League homeless shelter in Brentwood in April. The members of the Mechanical Bulls team spent the afternoon introducing the field of robotics to homeless

children. The children learned some basics about robotics and were shown three different types of robots created by the team. Team members discussed the various competitions and preparations needed to compete in the rigorous FIRST Robotics Competitions. The team talked about the challenge for this year’s FIRST Stronghold competition

and introduced the design process they followed to develop their robot. Smithtown robotics team members then drove the robot around the room and used the robot to roll a ball to multiple children from the shelter. The children asked great questions and enjoyed watching and learning about robots.

Broadcasting Tips The Digital Media Club from Accompsett Middle School in the Smithtown Central School District visited the Stony Brook University School of Journalism on May 6th. Club members toured the SBU journalism newsroom and viewed broadcasts and video projects created by Stony Brook journalism students. Students also got

the chance to ask questions about techniques, software, equipment and more. They also attended a presentation on news literacy, which included tips on how to evaluate news for accuracy and reliability. “The Accompsett students found the presentation particularly relevant as they are

constantly striving to enhance their own AMS TV News productions,” said Donna DeLuca, library media specialist and Digital Media Club adviser at Accompsett Middle School. “They came away with a renewed excitement for their work in the digital media lab as well as some new ideas for future broadcasts.”

More than 100 senior citizens of the Hauppauge School District were honored with heartfelt gratitude at the annual Senior Citizen Recognition Dinner, which recently was held at Hauppauge High School. This annual event is one way that the District, PTAs, business community and residents thank the senior citizens

and recognize them for their contributions to the Hauppauge School District and the community. District administrators, staff and PTAs prepared a delectable pasta and meatball feast, which was served to the honored guests by the Board of Education members, High School National Honor Society and Interact Club students.

Rotary Recognition

Fourteen students from Smithtown High Schools East and West were presented with awards from the Rotary Club of Smithtown on May 12th. Each guidance counselor selected a student for recognition based their character, morals and ability to overcome obstacles. “Each of these students has shown great improvement during their time in Smithtown

schools,” said Michael Aleci, assistant principal at Smithtown High School East. “They have overcome roadblocks, shown their dedication to improving themselves and have all become a success. It is truly an honor to recognize them.” After enjoying a breakfast together, each of the 14 guidance counselors from both schools took to the stage to speak about

their honoree and why they were chosen. The following students were award receipients: High School East – Rosalie Zack, Ashley McGuigan, Paige Hurst, Peter Cardenas, Brandon Byrne, Frances Sanzone and Brian Kuhnel. High School West – Aaron Kelly, Christian Herdigein, Angela Mayleas, Robert Belloise, Cristian Ruiz, Mazen Elzbik and Madison Wurm.

The High School’s Musical Theatre Class entertained the senior citizens with a selection of Broadway show tunes during dinner and dessert. Great Expectations By: Jamie Lynn Ryan “Spring is the time of year when it is summer in the sun and winter in the shade.” ~ Charles Dickens, Great Expectations While the calendar may technically still say spring for almost another month, the approach of Memorial Day weekend signals summer on the horizon. As thousands of Long Islanders head to the beach to enjoy the sun, surf and sand, we reflect on the first five months of the year… how has your 2016 been so far? Is it headed in the right direction? Are there still goals left to attain? What

does the remainder of the year hold in store? Of course, we can only predict so much, direct our fate to a degree; but, with that, our actions – or inaction, as the case may be – are what set the precedence for how our days will unfold. A little positive momentum goes a long way in determining the course of weeks, months, even entire years. One small step in the right direction is all it takes to turn things around. And with that, spring is the perfect time to look forward, that season of rebirth and growth, of blossoming flowers and greening grass, of eggs hatching and bunnies

frolicking, of pools opening and bathing suits and flip flops seeing the light of day. Speaking of, those late afternoons and early evenings of golden sunlight do wonders for the psyche – how nice to leave work and still have that sunset glow to drive home by. And so we turn the page on May, look ahead to June and all that summer beckons. We dust off the remnants of the past, and gaze forward into the great unknown, full of anticipation and promise and excitement in the hope that tomorrow will be a better day. Here’s to 2016 and molding it into something memorable!

Ten Bretton Woods Elementary School students in Lara Damadeo’s and Veronica Weeks’ math classes scored big at the Suffolk County Math Tournament, which recently was held at Stony Brook University. Lara Damadeo’s team included 4th grade students Anthony Rodriguez, Chase Dobbs, Sadiq Shaik, Sri Sagiraju and Rishabh Dholakia. Coached by Veronica Weeks, the 5th grade

team included: Sushant Choudhary, Keertana Madhira, Matthew Ficco, Navya Gautam and Dharmik Namineni. At the Tournament, the students had to answer 10 difficult mathematics questions independently, and then for the second round, they worked as a team to answer 10 additional questions. Bretton Woods 4th grade team won 2nd place overall in their division, and Anthony Rodriguez won

a 9th place trophy for his individual work. The 5th grade team also placed 2nd in their division. Keertana Madhira won 7th place and Matthew Ficco came in 8th for their individual competitions. “The kids had a blast competing and spending the day on a college campus,” said their coaches. “They worked so well as a team! Bretton Woods is very proud of all the students’ hard work and dedication.”
