The students were selected based on their performance at the Long Island Science Congress competition, which was held at St. Anthony’s High School, Huntington Station, New York. Barshay’s project, Deter-

Ant, tests how natural oils work at repelling ants compared to more traditional, chemical products. Mehta’s project, Developing an Inexpensive Filter to Remove Microbeads from Water, investigates the effectiveness of different materials in removing microbeads found in various skincare products. The two Hauppauge Middle School students are two of only 13 students who will advance to the New York State Science Congress from the Long

The Summer Swing Memorial Day weekend is upon us and, just like that, the unofficial start to summer beckons. Swimsuits will be unearthed from the back of closets, beach passes affixed to car windows, and bags packed with sunscreen and towels as the great majority of Long Islanders head to one of our local beaches to celebrate the season. For the last seven or so years, I have been attending the Jones Beach Air Show, taking in the breathtaking aerodynamics of the U.S. Navy Blue Angels and the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds on alternate years. It doesn’t matter how many shows – and pre-show arrivals – I have witnessed; it just never gets old. There is something incredible about witnessing these planes in flight, soaring against the sky in perfect formation.

Of course, Memorial Day weekend is only the beginning, and the hope is that there will be plenty more beautiful beach weekends to enjoy throughout the next several months, although, doesn’t it seem as though the nicest days are reserved for those spent inside the office staring at a computer screen? There is just no predicting Mother Nature, so best to take advantage of whatever rays of sunshine you can as soon as they begin to peek through. Speaking of unpredictable weather, I currently have tickets to about seven or eight concerts at the Jones Beach Theatre this year; fingers crossed that at least a few will be enjoyed under a clear summer sky, sans torrential downpour, lightning storm or any other inclement conditions. While none of my shows have ever been cancelled, there have

been several that pushed the boundaries. Just last summer, in fact, I found myself pondering just how “waterproof,” in fact, my phone was, and whether it was advisable to continue videoing the performance in front of me as sheets of rain streamed down around me. {The answers, in case you were wondering, were: A) not quite as waterproof as expected, and B) not so advisable.} So, enjoy your weekend, whatever it is you choose to do to usher in the summer season. Although the calendar indicates there’s still one month to go, the collective mindset seems to say there’s no need to wait. So slather on that sunscreen, grab your beach bag and dig your toes into the sand as the ocean caresses your feet. Just keep an eye on the sky for any storm clouds approaching.

Flags Fly High For a $25 donation, flags were available for purchase throughout the month. In total, the school sold 125 flags. During the first weekend in May, Accompsett Middle School Honor Society students and PTA parents worked to get the ground ready to display the flags, cleaning up the flower beds, drilling the holes for the flags and cutting

the PVC piping. The flags are currently on display at Accompsett Middle School to add a special touch to the ground for Memorial Day. Profits from the sale of the flags will be donated to America’s VetDogs, a local nonprofit that helps veterans with service dogs, and Boots on the Ground, a local veterans activity center.

Under his leadership, the Suffolk County Police Department offers rehabilitation rather than incarceration for youthful drug offenders. The evening’s Keynote address was offered by filmmaker and advocate, Greg Williams. His ground-breaking films, The Anonymous People and Generation Found have changed the way addiction and recovery are viewed, discussed and supported and has started a movement. Three hundred and twenty-five LICADD supporters and friends came together to note a year of milestones in the addiction and recovery arena. The filled to capacity crowd, raised over $310,000 enabling LICADD to continue it’s important and vital work of service, support, prevention education and advocacy. At the height of an opioid crisis on Long Island, this successful event was a positive stride in the fight to support those individuals and their families who struggle with alcohol and drug addiction. The Angel Ball paid a heartfelt tribute to the late Adele C. Smithers. A good friend and advocate for LICADD, she has been dubbed the “godmother” of research, education, prevention and recovery in the field of alcohol abuse and drug dependence. Her guidance, leadership and generosity will remain guiding principles for LICADD, as the agency furthers its 61year mission for years to come. Of Adele Smithers, LICADD Executive Director, Steve Chassman shared, “Amid the sad reality of Adele’s passing, there has been tremendous opportunity and strides forward. Adele left us a blueprint for what it means to dedicate a life to community service, to lend a voice for those who have none, and to work diligently to confront inequity and injustice.” In tribute to Adele Smithers, the Angel Ball was renamed, The Adele Smithers Angel Ball. The Christopher D. Smithers Foundation, led by Adele’s son, Christopher Smithers, his wife, Nikki and family were on hand to accept the honor. Commissioner Timothy D. The Jewish Community Relations Council of Long Island recently honored three students from Smithtown High School West during its annual Holocaust Remembrance Day commemoration on May 4th at Suffolk County Community College in

Selden. Smithtown High School West students Cory Calderone, Julia Negrin and Nicholas Gajda were selected to receive the Students Building Bridges Award. They were publicly honored for their efforts in building bridges across

Smithtown High School West hosted the district’s World Culture Showcase on May 4th. Students from across the district helped to create a night celebrating the diversity within their community. The evening featured a variety of performances

in the Smithtown High School West auditorium including dances from Ireland, El Salvador, Armenia and India, as well as songs from Israel and Turkey. In the school’s library, attendees visited booths created by students to

showcase their family’s heritage. Many of these booths included games for families to test their knowledge of various countries.

Smithtown High School East senior Sanjana Eranki and Smithtown High School West senior Samantha Catalano have been selected as winners of National Merit $2,500 Scholarships. The two Smithtown students were chosen for Merit Scholarship awards among 15,000

finalists based on their abilities, skills and accomplishments. The National Merit Scholarship Competition evaluates participants on their academic record, school’s curricula and grading system, two SAT scores, school official’s written recommendation, the finalist’s extracurricular

activities, leadership and personal essay. In the fall, Catalano will attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she will pursue an undergraduate degree in biology. Eranki is still undecided on her college choice at this time.

The Long Island Music Hall of Fame (LIMHoF) is proud to announce that Ron ‘Bumblefoot’ Thal, solo artist, producer, and former lead guitarist of Guns N’ Roses, has been added to their Honorary Education Board. The LIMHoF Education Advisory Board’s goal is to help carry out the Long Island Music Hall of Fame’s education mission. Lending star power and educational expertise to the Education Board, Bumblefoot joins a growing list of celebrities and educators that include: Carole Demas and Paula Janis of The Magic Garden, RUN-DMC’s DMC, Jimmy Rosica of the Brooklyn Bridge, Steve Burns of “Blue’s Clues,” singer and bassist Brady Rymer, and the Disney Channel’s rock star Dan Zanes. Together, this diverse group is ALS DONATION - Lorraine Lubicich, assistant professor; Michele Frati, senior striving to bring their administrative assistant; Gail Lamberta, associate dean for community development; love of music to future Chris Pendergast, president of ALS Ride for Life; and students from SJC Long Island’s generations for years to come. “Long Island is lucky to have such a plethora of locally born talent at it’s fingertips,” said Tom Needham, LIMHoF Education Chairman. “The Long Island Music Hall of Fame works to keep these successful artists, such as Bumblefoot, connected to home in order to further educate and support upand-coming-young talent.” Ron ‘Bumblefoot’ Thal is an award-winning multi-instrumentalist, composer, vocalist, songwriter, producer and world-renowned guitar virtuoso, who has released music, played international festivals and headlined tours for over 20 years. As lead guitarist of Guns N’ Roses (20062014), Bumblefoot played to sold-out shows all over the world. Bumblefoot’s unique ‘fretless guitar’ can be heard throughout GNR’s 2008 Chinese Democracy album. Bumblefoot’s recent success is his Little Brother Is Watching album

- an eccentric, upbeat collection of epic, modern rock with haunting melodies, huge choruses and witty lyrics about life in the digital age and beyond. Along with his many musical collaborations, Bumblefoot has worked as an adjunct professor in teaching music production, and he works with U.S. embassies around the world on cross-cultural music programs. Additionally, he has his own line of awardwinning hot sauces, and he works with dozens of international charities visiting orphanages and children’s hospitals around the world (with guitar in hand).
