PIZZA BOX TOP AND STICKER SHOCK CAMPAIGN - The Town of Smithtown Horizons Counseling and Education Center and Smithtown Youth Bureau, in conjunction with the 4th Precinct of the Suffolk County Police Department, launched the 5th Annual Pizza Box Top and Sticker Shock campaign on Friday, April 30th to combat underage drinking. This youth-led initiative works to educate and change adult attitudes regarding providing or selling alcohol to minors. Eight youth volunteers devoted their Friday afternoon to adhering a total of 1950 prevention stickers to carry-out bags at participating pizzerias and local Wine & Spirits shops.

Use Caution When Using Grills According to the National Fire Protection Association, roughly half of the injuries involving grills are thermal burns. Of the approximately 16,600 patients who visit emergency rooms for injuries involving grills each year, 8,200 are treated for thermal

burns. UPMC HealthBeat notes that thermal burns typically occur when a person touches ﬂames or fire or hot molten liquid or steam. Thermal burns also can result when touching a hot object, such as cooking pans, irons or heated appliances. WebMD

advises burn sufferers to call 911 immediately if the burn penetrates all layers of the skin; if the skin appears leathery or charred, with white, brown or black patches; or if the hands, feet, face, or genitals are burned. In addition, call 911 immediately if infants or

seniors suffer any burns, even if the burn does not appear severe. Treatment will depend on the severity and location of the burn. In the immediate aftermath of a thermal burn, Stanford Children’s Health advises cooling the affected area with cold water or a cold

compress until the pain is reduced or alleviated. Avoid breaking any blisters that form, and protect the burn with a dry, sterile gauze bandage or with a clean bed sheet or cloth. Do not attempt to remove clothing that is stuck to the burned area. In such

instances, cut around the clothing and leave the burn intact. Resist any temptation to apply ointments, oils or sprays to the burned area, as these should only be applied when prescribed by a doctor.

Hope House Ministries (HHM) is a non-profit organization located in Port Jefferson. They provide compassionate, comprehensive and competent care for the poor, the marginal and the wounded among us. This commitment is woven in the Gospel vision that all life is sacred and every human person is unique and has the right to be respected and protected. They have accomplished much over the 40+ years they have been helping others with minimal financial assistance from federal, state or county agencies. They depend on the generosity of private contributions, fundraising events and corporate donations. Hope House Ministries services people in both Nassau County and Suffolk County, offering services free of charge. Together, their staff and volunteers have created an empowering sense of family and community that are the change agents, helping young people grow in self-discipline, critical thinking, problem solving skills and personal responsibility. There are so many ways that this non-profit can truly help you get your life on a better track. Additionally, there are plenty of ways for people to get involved in helping others through volunteering. Over the past 40 years, thousands of people have donated their time and talent to help this organization reach those in need. If you are interested in volunteering with Hope House Ministries individually or with a group, here are just some of the areas you can do so: Office Work, Cooking, Photography, Transportation for Residents, Maintenance, Gardening/Farming/ Grounds Keeping, Transportation for Furniture/Donation Pick Up. The idea of non-profits asking for donations can become stale and repetitive, but it really is so important for us to give financially to non-profits that rely a large amount on donations instead of grant money. Here’s two reasons why you may want to consider giving to this organization: What if this was personal? Imagine your son or daughter, your grandchildren, your own brother or sister, or parent experiencing homelessness, addiction, mental health issues, domestic violence or severe depression. Imagine your family torn apart by circumstances out of your control. If you were connected to a crisis situation you would be very comforted to know that an entire community of supporters have made it possible for your loved one to find professional help and healing free of charge. So consider joining that network of support and be a part of the Hope House Ministries’ family. All of the services Hope House Ministries offers are FREE! This includes housing, supportive professional services, counseling, healthcare, insurance, transportation, food, clothing and opportunities for education both for both high school, college or trade school. When explained to those new to their agency, few believe it possible. Many question how they are able to stay open. Town of Smithtown Recreation Department Spring Horseshoe Tournament

On Saturday, May 1st, the Smithtown Recreation Department held its annual Singles and Doubles Spring Horseshoe Tournament at Brady Park. There were 18 single horseshoe participants and 8 doubles teams participate in the event. The winner of the Singles Tournament, with

a record of 5-0, was Debby Kassay. Debby beat Jay McConnell in the finals. Jay finished in second place with a record of 5-2. Larry Bond finished in 3rd place. Andy Kassay and Greg Burns were the winners of the Doubles competition. Andy and Greg finished with a record of 4-0 as they

defeated Jay McConnell & Justin Flores. Jay & Justin finished with a record of 4-2. Congratulations to all the winners and to everyone who helped make this event so successful. Hope to see everyone at the Fall Horseshoe Tournament.

5th Annual Pizza Box Top and Sticker Shock Campaign The Town of Smithtown Horizons Counseling and Education Center and Smithtown Youth Bureau, in conjunction with the 4th Precinct of the Suffolk County Police Department, launched the 5th Annual Pizza Box Top and Sticker Shock campaign on Friday, April 30th. This youth-led initiative works to educate and change adult attitudes regarding providing or selling alcohol to minors. Eight youth volunteers devoted their Friday afternoon to adhering a total of 1950 prevention stickers to carry-out bags at participating pizzerias and local Wine & Spirits shops. “This is the fifth year we are holding this event. It is a great way to discuss the importance of preventing underage drinking to our community members. We hope the underage drinking prevention stickers help to open a dialogue in families that may not have happened without it. The young people, liquor stores and the pizzerias involved are wonderful to work with and very committed to

our Township. Working in partnership with the Town’s Youth Bureau gives opportunity for some of their registered student volunteers to play an active, empowering role in educating peers and neighbors, and improving the health of their community.” - Kelly DeVito- Youth Services Coordinator, Horizons Counseling and Education Center Four youth volunteers participated in the Pizza Box Top event, adhering 1,450 prevention messaging stickers on carry out bags at local Pizzerias; Mema’s in Commack, Branchinellis in Hauppauge, Mama’s Brick Oven in Hauppauge, and Buona Sera in Smithtown. Four youth volunteers participated in this year’s Sticker Shock campaign, adhering 500 prevention stickers on carry out bags from Figari’s Liquor and Wine store and YM Liquor and Wine Store. A total of 1,950 carry-out bag were branded with prevention stickers which read; Your Decisions MatterPreventing underage

drinking is everyone’s responsibility, Suffolk County Police Department 4th precinct Cope officers, LaVeglia and Dono gave a presentation to the volunteers about the social host law, underage drinking and the dangers of marijuana prior to the awareness activity. The New York social host law can impose liability on a social host who provides alcohol to an adult (21 years of age or older) should that person become intoxicated and cause injury to another person as a result of that intoxication. DID YOU KNOW: Alcohol is the most widely abused drug by young people. During these times when more people are spending time at home, alcohol use is increasing. Accompsett Middle Awarded Grant For New Native Garden

AWARDED GRANT FOR NEW NATIVE GARDEN - Accompsett Middle School in the Smithtown Central School District was awarded a $5,000 grant from the Long Island Regional Planning Council as part of the Long Island Water Quality Challenge to develop a native plant and pollinator garden outside the school. The challenge was a STEM competition which encourages young students to reduce runoff and nitrogen pollution on school grounds and incorporate those projects into ongoing educational programs. Local politicians and members of the conservation and preservation community gathered outside Accompsett Middle School to present the check to teachers Amy Olander and Lou Mincieli. Senator Mario Matterra, Assemblyman Michael Fitzpatrick, Suffolk County Commissioner of Economic Development and Planning Natalie Wright, Suffolk County Legislator Leslie Kennedy, Suffolk County Legislator Robert Trotta and Town of Smithtown Senior Environmental Analyst in the Dept of Environment and Waterways Stephanie

Hurd were in attendance for the Earth Day celebration. At Accompsett Middle School, students proposed a native plant and pollinator garden for the front entrance of the school, which will serve as an ongoing “classroom” for both middle school and elementary school students on how native plants and natural pollinators, such as birds and bats, can reduce the use of chemicals or overwatering. “Our pollinator garden has given students the opportunity to see how nature can help to solve the nitrogen problem on Long Island,” said Accompsett Middle School teacher Amy Olander. “By getting the students involved in planning and implementing the garden, they see how the STEM disciplines are used to turn an idea into reality. Students are also learning that by planting native species, we help our pollinators and birds so our environment can be healthy and sustainable. We are grateful for the chance to show the community that even small changes in

our own yards can help the environment.” The Long Island Water Quality Challenge was first offered in 2019 to all schools in Nassau and Suffolk counties serving grades 6,7 and 8 with an invitation to develop and design projects for their school grounds which will either reduce the use of fertilizers/pesticides and water consumption, or devise methods to collect and treat water runoff from the school property. A panel of water quality experts served as evaluators of the projects and awarded grants. “Excess nitrogen presents a serious threat to the health and sustainability of our ground and surface waters all across Long Island,” said John Cameron, LIRPC chairman. “We can take positive steps today to instill a sense of urgency in our students – who are the leaders and stewards of tomorrow – about the need to reduce the use of fertilizers and pesticides, and how to prevent harmful runoff from reaching our waterways.”

Smithtown High School East junior Jonathan Chung, part of the ThINK Discovery science research program, was selected as one of 10 honorable mentions for his essay in this year’s DNA essay contest, sponsored by the American Society of Human Genetics. Genome Wide Association Studies are used to associate genetic variations to certain diseases, and a lack of diverse participation

can affect the pool of information available to scientists. Problems with a diverse data pool was the topic of this year’s contest. Students from 40 U.S. states and 30 countries submitted essays. “It was a lot of work, but I can see that writing many drafts with lots of red marks contributes to a better quality paper,” Chung said. Scientific writing requires an enormous amount of research, according to Maria

Zeitlin, ThINK research coordinator at Smithtown High School East. “Often the topics are ones the students have never heard about and so the writing begins with hours of literature review followed by writing a minimum of four drafts,” she said. “The result of all that hard work was Jonathan’s essay was very well articulated and analytical of the problems with genomic association studies.”

Alzheimer’s Caregiver Tips “Every team needs a playbook to succeed, and the same is true of caregiving teams. Team members can often ignore their own needs, leading to stress and potentially health problems. Every good caregiving plan includes both the person with Alzheimer’s or dementia and the people providing care.” The Frank & Barbara Broyles Foundation was founded in honor of former University of Arkansas football coach and athletic director Frank Broyles and his wife, Barbara, who both had Alzheimer’s disease. In 2006, Coach Broyles penned “Coach Broyles’ Playbook for Alzheimer’s Caregivers,” which offers strategies and goal-oriented advice

for those caring for loved ones with Alzheimer’s. Those who attend the free program will receive a free copy of Broyles’ book. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, there are more than 6 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s disease and more than 11 million family members caring for them. In New York alone, there are 410,000 people battling the disease and 586,000 caregivers. “Play by Play: Creating Care Plans” will begin at 2 p.m. EDT on Thursday, May 20. Caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease can be stressful, and for those who are new to caregiving, it can also feel overwhelming. To help families cope with the challenges of dementia caregiving, the Alzheimer’s Association is teaming up with the Frank & Barbara Broyles Foundation to share helpful tips. On May 20, the two organizations will host “Play by Play: Creating Care Plans,” a virtual program on combating caregiver stress and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. “A plan can make a real difference for anyone involved in caregiving,” said Kate Anastasia, director of programs at the Alzheimer’s Association.

New York Blood Center Announces A Blood Emergency year since these groups had to cancel their blood drives due to COVID-19 and few have been able to resume these lifesaving events. NYBC currently has a 4 day supply of blood, which is well below what is needed by area hospitals. New York’s healthcare system requires 1,500
