Mathematics Tournament
A
fifth-grade student from Branch Brook Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District was named the first-place winner for his grade in the individual contest at the 2016 Suffolk County, Elementary Mathematics Tournament Grades 4-6, at Stony Brook University on May 2nd. Fifth-grader Hasan Khan took home the top award in the individual portion of the tournament for his grade, beating out more than 200 other competitors.

The Digital Media Club from Accompsett Middle School in the Smithtown Central School District visited the Stony Brook University School of Journalism on May 6th. Club members toured the SBU journalism newsroom and viewed broadcasts and video projects created by Stony Brook journalism students. Students also got
the chance to ask questions about techniques, software, equipment and more. They also attended a presentation on news literacy, which included tips on how to evaluate news for accuracy and reliability. “The Accompsett students found the presentation particularly relevant as they are

Tile Creations Students at Tackan Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District took part in a special hands-on art project throughout the week of May 2nd with artist-in-resident Esther Tollen.
During art classes, each student worked with Tollen in creating a mosaic tile mural that will be used as the tabletop in the school’s outdoor courtyard. The three tables in the outdoor garden will be crafted with a mosaic creation

representing earth, wind and fire. Starting with earth, this project will take place over three years. The project gives students a chance to create a oneof-a-kind piece that will create a lasting memory in their school.
Nineteen Commack High School students were awarded NYS Scholarships for Academic Excellence. Awards are based on student grades in certain Regents exams. The scholarships provide $500 to $1,500 per year for up to five years of undergraduate study in a New York State post-secondary college or university. By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Several weeks ago, shortly after the passing of my “Pal,” my Grandpa, we discovered what appeared to be a small bird’s nest nestled under the awning in the backyard. Assuming it was just a collection of twigsin-progress, I gingerly climbed on top of a chair to peek inside, only to find three beautiful blue eggs, clearly from the likes of a robin. No one was certain how long it had been there, though obviously enough time for the mama bird to lay these eggs. Not wanting to disturb the carefully orchestrated set-up, we left everything as it was and waited – from a safe distance – to see if the mother would return. Well, return she did and, within a few days, a fourth egg appeared in the nest, as she guarded her stash, fleeing only briefly upon any human sightings.
Now, you may be wondering, what’s the big deal? It’s spring, ‘tis the season for the birds and the bees and all of nature to frolic and procreate. While this is true, it must be noted that, in the 55 years my grandparents resided in this house, there were most likely exactly zero nests successful built by any birds. This was due to the fact that my Grandpa, lovable as he was, did not care for the messy remnants of twigs and leaves that the birds tended to leave while in the “construction” stage of things. At the first sign of a nest-in-progress, out would come the broom, sweeping all of their hard work away in one fell swoop. But now, here they were – four, tiny, perfect Easter-looking eggs, ready to hatch at any moment with brand new life. We kept a watchful eye on them for weeks, until one day, out popped a baby, all pink and naked, flopped on the other three eggs, which were now
showing signs of beginning to crack as well. A few days later, four fuzzy little hatchlings resided in the nest, napping in a pile of soft, pulsating fur, eyes not quite open, occasionally opening their beaks in case food happened to be lurking nearby. As of this writing, the four are still happily cohabitating, the fuzz gradually beginning to be filled in with soft gray feathers, the eyes fully open and alert, the beaks ready and waiting for mama’s next meal delivery. According to most references, it may be as little as a week before these little chicks are ready to fly off on their own. And such is the circle of life… How wonderful to be able to witness it right in Grandma and Grandpa’s backyard, especially at this time. There are those who believe in signs – for those, I don’t think you could ask for a clearer indication that this special delivery was intended just for us, right here, right now.

International Flavor
Hauppauge High School held its 17th International Night on Thursday, April 14th. Teacher Christine Rigaud began International Night as a means to unite the French, German and Spanish Clubs while promoting cultural acceptance and understanding among the students. Since its inception, International Night has become more than Language Club Advisers Christine Rigaud, Helen Aigen and Danielle Cardi ever could have imagined. “Not only does it unite language students, it unites the entire community,” stated the teachers. “It promotes cultural awareness, acceptance and understanding by exposing our students to different customs and traditions. We give them an opportunity to experience firsthand something that they may never have been exposed to otherwise.” The entertainment changes each year depending on our students; but this year, they sang international
songs and choreographed and performed cultural dance routines. They also provided face painting and a piñata for the younger guests. International Night was run almost entirely by the students under the guidance of their language club advisers. Each club member brought in a special dish, which had a cultural significance to him/her. The name of the food and its origin were listed in front of each dish that was served. The students also provided beverages, obtained donations, sold raffle tickets, and on the night of the event, served and cleaned up. All of the raffle prizes were either purchased in other countries, while the students and teachers were on their school trips around the world, or were donated by local businesses. The students began collecting donations in January – as they do annually for the event. “We are very grateful to the community businesses
that support us every year.” said Rigaud. “While some of the students are nervous at first about asking for donations, they quickly learn that the community is always willing to help. These students become ambassadors for our school by helping people understand what International Night is really about.” Another one of the goals of International Nights is to raise awareness about Crohn’s disease and Ulcerative Colitis. A portion of the proceeds from International Night are donated to the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation each year. (www.ccfa.org) Each June, the French Club also participates in the Crohn’s and Colitis walk to help fund research. “As an International Baccalaureate (IB) school, it is very important for us to teach our students to be global citizens and think about the greater good. We are very proud of all of the work that they do for the community,” said the club advisers.

The Hauppauge High School chapter of the National Honor Society (NHS) welcomed new members who have demonstrated academic excellence, service and leadership in a special candle-lighting ceremony. In addition, Science Teacher Rick Plouffe was the student-selected 2016 Faculty Inductee for best exemplifying the four characteristics of the NHS – leadership, service, character and scholarship. In his Welcoming Address, Interim Superintendent of Schools Neil Lederer congratulated “our inductees for their dedication to learning and service to our school. They are shining examples of what makes Hauppauge such a vibrant, enthusiastic, educational system. I wish them much continued success. Remember the effort it has taken to reach this
outstanding achievement and sustain that effort as you go forward.” The National Honor Society (NHS) recognizes and encourages academic achievement while developing characteristics essential to all citizens. According to its constitution, the purpose of this organization is to “create enthusiasm for scholarship, stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership and to develop character in the students of secondary schools.” Becoming a member of NHS is both an honor and a commitment since it is based on outstanding scholarship and service. Service is defined to be “any unpaid activity that provides service for another” in school and in the community. To become a candidate for admission into NHS, a student must have maintained
an 87 unweighted and unrounded quarterly grade point average for six consecutive marking periods prior to the selection process, which is conducted each year in March. Inducted National Honor Society members are required to maintain an 87 average (unweighted, unrounded) throughout their studies. They must attend 50 percent of all the meetings and events to remain a member of the Hauppauge chapter. NHS is an active participant in Homecoming, Safe Halloween and the Jones Beach Cancer Walk as well as preparing dinner at The Ronald MacDonald House and serving dinner at Hauppauge’s Annual Senior Citizen Recognition Dinner. Hauppauge’s NHS staff advisers are Dawn Lynch and Harry Shehigian.
