This year’s event, which benefits the FIRST® Long Island robotics programs, is being held at Nissequogue Golf Club in St. James on Monday, June 26th.

In 2007, she signed on as Judge Advisor for the SBPLI Long Island Regional in 2003 and has assumed that role ever since. Dr. Greenwald is also instrumental in coordinating the annual Fred Breithut Scholarship, which is presented to an incoming Farmingdale College student each year. Fun to Be Fit Students from St. James Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District participated in the first Fit Kids Day, sponsored by Suffolk Zone of the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. The event was held at Lincoln
Avenue Elementary School in Sayville on May 8th. St. James Elementary School was one of 12 Suffolk County schools chosen to participate in this pilot program. Based on their fitness-gram scores as well as their overall character, physical education teachers Tom
Scientific Project Vulin and Patti Petrucelli selected 24 fourth- and fifth-graders. The students competed in fitness-based individual and team events. They learned teamwork, good sportsmanship as well as the importance of maintaining physical fitness throughout their lives.

Congratulations to our Commack High School science research students and their teacher/mentor, Richard Kurtz, who were named 2nd place national winners in the Toshiba/ NSTA ExploraVision competition. Ninth grade students Christine, Kimberly, Michael, and Louis, along with teacher and mentor Richard Kurtz, won an all expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. for the national awards ceremony in June. Each student winner will receive a $5,000 U.S. EE Savings Bond. Mr. Kurtz will receive NSTA membership for one year and an all expense-paid trip to one of the NSTA conferences of his choice as an ExploraVision
Ambassador. As Regional winners each team member and Mr. Kurtz already received a portable hard drive and framed certificates. The school was awarded a Toshiba laptop, an engraved plaque, and a banner that will be proudly mounted in the hallway of our High School. The ExploraVision competition challenges students to envision and communicate new technology that would be feasible 20 years into the future and that would solve a real world problem. Our group came up with “Scat Scan: The Future of Microbiome Analysis,” which would use a retractable arm to deliver a sample of feces to a miniature glass
microfluidic computer chip, which would then extract DNA and isolate the prokaryotic 16S ribosomal RNA gene using PCR amplification and sequencing. Results would be sent to the user’s smartphone, providing “fast, clean, and convenient data about their microbiome health.” “We are very proud that our students and our renowned high school science research program are once again receiving national recognition,” said Dr. Donald James, Superintendent. “Their vision of the future may well advance the discovery and treatment of medical conditions and enhance the health of generations to come.”

The students helped test for the presence of round goby, sea lamprey, snakehead fish and four species of Asian carp across the state as well as developed probes for a few species of Asian swamp eels that have started to migrate from the south and New York City. Results of quantitative PCR analysis of the students’ samples have revealed, for example, the presence of
round goby in the same Erie Canal and Oneida Lake locations where professional scientists have identified them as well as in several sites where they had been undetected. “Many people question the legitimacy of citizen science, especially with students especially with something this sophisticated,” she stated. “The results have shown that, with the right structure and presentation, schoolchildren can contribute useful scientific data.” The students’ results from across New York State are displayed on maps that teachers can show students, and students can use to tell their parents about their contributions to an important scientific study.

Staying Power I recently had the opportunity to attend a journalism forum at The Paley Center for Media in Manhattan. Titled “The Future of Local News: Trust, Truth & The Bottom Line,” this summit brought together some of the best and the brightest in the industry to discuss what many have summarily dismissed as a dying field. I am happy to report that, after listening to several engaging panels touching on everything from politics to nonprofit upstarts to the pros and cons of social media in the information age, I came away with an even deeper sense of confidence that journalism is, in fact, here to stay. Sure, the fourth estate may have hit some bumps in the road of late; but, in essence, these
obstacles have only helped those truly reputable media outlets to gain a stronger foothold. Too much of anything is a bad thing; this is a commonly held opinion. But, to be able to harness this influx of information and utilize it in such a way that is beneficial, well, that is a opportunity that should not be squandered. It may take time and research to discern what is truly valuable and accurate information, but why shouldn’t we devote that kind of effort to educating ourselves? It hardly seems a steep price to pay, in my estimation. The hope is that, as the sources of “news” multiply and morph, future generations will increasingly become experts at determining what

is reliable. Not to throw the phrase back in my day around too lightly but… back when I was in college, media was pretty much defined as print or broadcast; newspapers, magazines, television, radio. Social media was only just beginning to take off, and its potential as a legitimate source of news – breaking or otherwise – was as yet unanticipated. Fast forward to the present day, when your average elementary school student is “plugged in” to his/her own cell phone throughout the day. My, how times have changed. Regardless of whether we support this development, the fact is - it’s happening. Best to jump on board and learn to harness the power of the media. It’s here to stay.

Congressman Pete King visits Long Island Cares Food Bank at its corporate office in Hauppauge. Long Island Cares was founded by the late singersongwriter Harry Chapin in 1980. Its goals are to improve food security for families and inform the general public about the causes and consequences of hunger on Long Island. Among other things Long Island Cares distributes more than 8,000,000 pounds of food via more than 590 food
pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, senior nutrition sites and day care centers throughout Nassau and Suffolk. Long Island Cares also provides nutritional meals for many needy children in various after-school programs and works closely with veterans organizations to assist needy veterans, including delivering groceries to homebound, disabled veterans. Approximately 284,000 Long Island residents
receive emergency food from Long Island Cares each year. Rep. King has strongly supported these nutrition programs in Congress and recently voted to provide $883 million (an increase of $3 million over the previous year for programs supporting senior nutrition including Meals On Wheels. Congressman King noted that under the leadership of CEO Paule Pachter, Long Island Cares does an outstanding job and deserves our support.
