The Long Island event is organized by Hofstra University’s Romance Language Department. Developmental Disabilities Institute (DDI), the leading service provider for children and adults with autism on Long Island, will be dancing for a cause during Autism Awareness Month. Adults served by DDI will be partnering up with students of Vic D’Amore’s American Studio of Performing Arts to produce Dancing for Autism 2, Broadway Nights at 7 p.m. on Friday, June 7th at the Kings Park High School Auditorium. Tickets will be sold at $10 general admission or $7 for senior citizens and children under 12 to benefit DDI’s Adult Day Program. There will also be a special advance ticket package for $25 that will include special seating, a commemorative DVD of last year’s event, candy and custom event program. DDI’s Day Programs serve adults with developmental disabilities and autism at seven locations throughout Suffolk County. Day programs assist adults served by DDI with education, personal skills development, recreation and job training services to help prepare each individual to become productive members of the community in which they reside. The dance program originated with Melissa Espinal and Evens Bourisquot. Melissa is not only a student at the dance studio, but a DDI
employee as well. The Bethpage Air Show will be held Memorial Day weekend 2013 at Jones Beach State Park, Wantagh, NY, on Saturday, May 25th, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Sunday, May 26th, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Air Show is free to the public, but the standard $10 vehicle use fee will be collected each day upon entry to the State Park. For 2013 NYS Empire Passport holders, there is no vehicle use fee charge. For those looking to take public transportation to the air show, NICE Bus has increased its summer service and will run the n88 out of the Freeport LIRR station to Jones Beach every half hour from 8:35 a.m. until 9 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
Also, the newly reinstated N87 out of the Hicksville LIRR station, will run hourly to Jones Beach on Saturday and Sunday, from 9:20 a.m. until 7:20 p.m. Both routes will make stops at Jones Beach’s two Bathhouses and the Central Mall. It’s Sunday morning and a car crunches in the driveway, pulling up to the stately old farmhouse at Sweetbriar Nature Center. A family gets out of the car, and two little boys are carrying a white bucket. The receptionist greets the family, and the boys excitedly explain that they have four baby bunnies whose mother had not come back to care for them. Their dog had disturbed the nest the day before, and despite following the advice given by Sweetbriar staff over the phone, the mother rabbit had not returned. The happy news is that the bunnies received excellent care at Sweetbriar and were able to be released back to the wild when they were eating well on their own and had developed a healthy instinct to run from people, dogs and other dangerous things. Every year, Sweetbriar provides care to hundreds of orphaned and injured wildlife such as the eastern
cottontail bunnies rescued by the boys. It takes many hours of dedicated work by staff and volunteers and also supplies for food and medical attention and funds for veterinary bills and equipment. And Spring and Summer are peak season. To encourage public support for this important mission, Sweetbriar hosts an annual Wildlife Baby Shower. This year, the event will be held May 19 is from 1:00 to 3:00 pm at Sweetbriar Nature Center, at 62 Eckernkamp Drive in Smithtown. Cost is $5/per person for members and scout groups or $6/person for all others. Attendees will learn how Sweetbriar nurses baby mammals and birds, and will enjoy a hike in the woods looking for wildlife homes. They will also make a fun wildlife friendly craft and enjoy cake. In addition to the fee, the public is asked to bring a “baby gift” from our wish list:

Romance & Spanish Poetry Commack High School students earned gold, silver, and bronze at the annual Hofstra Spanish Poetry Contest for Secondary Schools. The Long Island event is organized by Hofstra University’s Romance Language Department. The students competed against approximately forty other students in each category ranging from level I to IV, junior
high school to high school. Students were judged on pronunciation, intonation, memorization and expression as they recited poems by famous Spanish authors. Congratulations to Matthew O’Connell for first place in Level 3, to Jesse Woltal for her first place win in Level 4, to Jae Yoon Bae and Christina Cabana for 2nd place in Level 4, and to Julian Faranda and
Samantha Lampert for Level 4 third place wins. In Level 5, Jeffery Ball took 3rd place, as did Carmen Vieytez, in the Native Category. The students work very hard in memorizing and practicing their poems after school, and their hard work has paid off! Mrs. Silva coordinates and assists the students in this great endeavor.

The Torch Award is awarded to a Smithtown teacher who has significantly and demonstrably contributed
to the growth and professional development of one or more Smithtown teachers. It derives its name from the quote attributed to Plato, “Those who have torches will pass them along to others”. The award formally recognizes teachers who have appreciably contributed to the professional and/or personal growth of their teacher colleagues. It is an award given to teachers who help other teachers become better at what they do by passing their “educational torches” to them. The Torch Award, which has been awarded to fifty excellent Smithtown teachers over the past eight years, is unique for three reasons. First, it focuses
on teachers helping teachers grow. Second, only Smithtown teachers may be nominated for the award by other Smithtown teachers; all candidates must be nominated by their teaching peers. And third, the award acknowledges that sharing one’s educational expertise with other teachers is an important quality of a teacher leader. The Torch Award salutes that leadership. According to Laura Greif, Program Director at the Smithtown Senior Citizen Department, “We wanted to focus some energy on a project that would help our youngest citizens.” In areas of extreme poverty or following a natural disaster, baby care kits help young mothers care for their babies. an effort led by Debbie Rosenberg, Recreation Leader at the Senior Citizen Department, thirteen baby care kits were completed by the group. Each baby care kit included six cloth diapers, two T-shirts, two washcloths, two diaper pins, two pajamas, one crochet sweater, one crochet blanket and one receiving blanket. Participating schools advance through a series of elimination rounds, with one school in each region being crowned regional champion and winning $2,500 for their school. The winning teams from each region go on to “The Challenge” Championship where they square off in a Tri-State Showdown. The school awarded the title of Tri-State Champion will receive $10,000 in prize money and each student participating in the final “Challenge” Championship game will receive $500. An Eagle Court of Honor celebrating the achievement of Matthew Cassano, Boy Scout Troop 125’s 91st Eagle Scout, was held on May 4th, at the Commack United Methodist Church, the troop’s sponsor for over 40 years. For his Eagle Leadership Service Project, Cassano built a 76’ by 2.7’ brick walkway in front of the Epenetus Smith Tavern, one of the historical buildings at the Smithtown Historical Society. The bricks for the pathway were donated by the Smithtown Historical Society and the rental of the tamper was donated by Taylor Rental. The Smithtown Historical Society is committed to the preservation, restoration, and interpretation of Long Island’s heritage for the education and enjoyment of all who visit. “I thought this project would be a good challenge and I felt the original was in need of a major repair,” said Cassano. Being a Boy Scout “has given me good leadership skills, communication skills and taught me how to deal with tough situations.” This Eagle Project took one year to complete from inception through completion and a total of 170 hours were logged into the project by Cassano and 18 additional scouts and adults. The funds used for this project were raised during a car wash held at Sunshine Physical Therapy, whose owner (and scout Mom) Venise Glass, donated all of the hoses, buckets, cones, towels and signs
