Golf Outing Set Angela’s House will hold its annual golf outing at Indian Hills Golf Club in Northport on June 9th to support its mission of helping care for medically frail children and their families. The event, now in its 12th year, helps cover the cost of medical supplies, equipment and services for children with special health needs. The outing is one of a series of events held annually to support the

agency, which was founded 20 years ago by Bob and Angie Policastro, whose daughter Angela suffered severe brain damage during birth. The outing features putting tee and driving range activities beginning at 9:45 a.m., followed by an 11 a.m. shotgun start and 18 holes of golf on one of Long Island’s most challenging and breathtaking private courses. The 6th Annual A Day At The Races will be held on Saturday, June 21st, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Belmont Racetrack. This premiere social event helps fund the MDA Summer Camp program. The local MDA Summer Camp is July 19th through 25th in Center Moriches, NY and provides children age 6-17, from Long Island, the Boroughs and Westchester areas, who are living with neuromuscular disease a one-week sleepover camp where they can make memories that will last a lifetime. Nicole Bustamante, a Stony Brook University senior majoring in Health Sciences with a concentration in Public Health and a minor in Women’s and Gender Studies, at has been selected to participate in the prestigious Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange for Young Professionals (CBYX), a year-long, federallyfunded fellowship to study and work in Germany. Ms. Bustamante, a Tappan, New York native, was selected as one of 75 participants for this unique fellowship program. Since 1984, approximately 1,700 Americans have been awarded this opportunity to gain cultural, academic, and practical work experience in Germany. Bustamante will be participating in the 31st year of the CBYX program. While in Germany, Ms. Bustamante will attend a two-month intensive German language course, study at a German university or professional school for four months, and complete a five-month internship with a German company in her career field (Public Health). Participants are placed throughout Germany and have the opportunity to learn about everyday German life from a variety of perspectives. “Nicole Bustamante is a shining example of the impact experiences outside of class can have on a student’s career trajectory,” said Marianna Savoca, Director of the Career Center, Stony Brook University. “Her years at Stony Brook have been filled with involvement in student organizations, like the National Residence Hall

Long Island Luncheon

Did you ever have one of those days when... well, let’s just leave it at that. We’ve all surely had them, whatever it is they entail, which usually leads to unnecessary levels of irritation and aggravation. And, more often than not, we are quick to blame others for the series of events which unfolds. Seems only fair. Maybe there is something to that old “got up on the wrong side of the bed” excuse; perhaps our days are destined to

progress precisely how our respective moods dictate. If this is true, then we may as well just crawl back under the covers and call it a day, no? No sense even trying to give it a go and turn things around. Or so many would have you believe… The thing is, if you want to walk around being miserable, go for it. But is it really necessary to “spread the joy” as it were and ensure that everyone you come in contact with is similarly infected with your dark pessimism? Does misery truly love company that much? I think not.

Why the rant on this particular occasion? Just timely observations is all – as one black cloud-carrying individual after another passes through, it is all one can do to stay focused on the task at hand. And that is – to live each and every day to the fullest, to do at least one thing exclusively for yourself and to refuse to let others drag you down into the abyss alongside them. The words are simple enough…now to put them into practice so that “one of those days” doesn’t become every day.

Competitors from 13 Nassau and Suffolk high schools gathered at Suffolk County Community College’s Culinary Arts Center in Riverhead on May 6th to compete for $5,000 in Suffolk County Community College culinary scholarships in the SYSCO Long Island High School Culinary Arts Competition.

The student’s displayed their culinary skills in the dishes that were prepared from a mystery basket of ingredients including a bone-in chicken, sweet potatoes, green squash and sundried tomatoes. Competitors were given one-and-a-half hours to complete two identical plates. Danny Insogna from HB Ward High School in

Riverhead took first place and the $4,000 SYSCO sponsored scholarship to Suffolk County Community College’s culinary arts program with his dish of pan roasted chicken with a mushroom cream sauce, sautéed vegetables and zucchini, and a sweet potato puree. Second Place and a $1,000 Sysco sponsored

scholarship went to Mathew Kollmeier from Wilson Tech School in Dix Hills with his winning dish of sautéed breast of chicken with rosemary with a beurre blanc sauce, sautéed vegetables and mashed sweet potatoes. The judges included Tom Mulzoff, Corporate Chef for Sysco L. I.; Ralph Delustro,

Holocaust Remembrance Day is a solemn day set aside to remember the six million Jews that fell victim to Nazi persecution. It is marked worldwide on January 27th each year, which is the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, a concentration camp in Germany. This year, the Jewish Community Relations Council, Long Island (JCRCLI), in partnership with Suffolk County’s State Senate, Assembly, and the Suffolk County Legislature, is coordinating a county-wide Yom Hashoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day) Commemoration on May 8th, at Suffolk County Community College. Six Commack students will be honored as “students who are working to create a more civil society.” They are Abrey Feliccia, Samantha Galina, Rebecca Ho, Carly Joos, Madeline Messinger, and Kathleen Nolan, students in AnnMarie D’Orazi’s history classes at Commack High School. Mrs. D’Orazi asked her students to compose an essay about a life-changing event. The essays written by the six girls above, all of whom are involved in community outreach and service projects, were chosen by Mrs. D’Orazi for consideration by the JCRC. I have made a decision! I’m proud to say that I will be a member of the Villanova University Class of 2018! After years of hard work, my efforts have finally paid off. It has always been my dream to get into a college that would make me happy, and Villanova certainly does that. As one of the top business schools in the country, Villanova is a great selection for my major, Marketing. Even though some people may not have heard of it, my college has a stunning campus located just a few miles outside of Philadelphia. I would not have been able to get into this

prestigious university without pushing myself through high school. Even though my Grade Point Average was not the greatest during my four years at St. John’s, I had one of the highest ACT scores in the grade. Despite being below the top 10%, I believe my scores were high enough to keep me in the competition for ‘Nova. In addition, my extracurricular activities are what really swayed the admissions officers’ decisions. Now that I’ve gotten into my dream school, I look forward to helping my younger brother do the same. After going through the entire process, I feel as

though I am well versed in the art of the application. Although I may not be the smartest, I realize that one’s grades do not define him/her. There is more to the applicant than a number. Holistically, any student can contribute to an outstanding freshman class. With that being said, if anyone has any questions about my decision, or the application process, feel free to e-mail me. Tree Campus USA Stony Brook University has been designated a Tree Campus USA by the National Arbor Day Foundation, in recognition of the university’s dedication to campus healthy forestry management, sustainability and environmental stewardship. SBU earned its recognition through the implementation of five core standards that promote the health of trees and student involvement to improve their forests. The University met the standards by establishing a campus tree advisory committee that developed a plan, allotting annual expenditures and brought in community members in the observance of Arbor Day. By introducing a Growing Red Days event last summer, Stony Brook was able to attract students to beautify the campus while teaching

them important planting methodology. Last Arbor Day, Stony Brook University President Samuel L. Stanley Jr. welcomed New York State Senator Kenneth P. LaValle to campus to join the University’s Sustainability program as they planted native trees provided by the Department of Environmental Conservation in the North Entrance Meadow as part of a restoration project to replace trees downed by Superstorm Sandy. “These goals and standards helped shape and define the campus’ vision to foster a healthy, safe and beautiful tree population,” said President Stanley. “These initiatives bring together members of the campus community, and inspire them to become more involved throughout the academic year. I very much enjoy seeing our community as a whole become a better environmental citizen,

They have been selected as the 2014 STA Torch Award Winners for demonstrating outstanding leadership in education. Their dedication and commitment to the field of education is worthy of this wonderful recognition. The Torch Award proudly supports and recognizes the accomplishments of Smithtown teachers. The Torch Award is awarded to a Smithtown teacher who has significantly and demonstrably contributed to the growth and professional development

of one or more Smithtown teachers. It derives its name from the quote attributed to Plato, “Those who have torches will pass them along to others.” The award formally recognizes teachers who have appreciably contributed to the professional and/or personal growth of their teacher colleagues. It is an award given to teachers who help other teachers become better at what they do by passing their “educational torches” to them. The Torch Award, which has been awarded to seventy excellent Smithtown teachers over the past eight years,

is unique for three reasons. First, it focuses on teachers helping teachers grow. Second, only Smithtown teachers may be nominated for the award by other Smithtown teachers; all candidates must be nominated by their teaching peers. And third, the award acknowledges that sharing one’s educational expertise with other teachers is an important quality of a teacher leader. The Torch Award salutes that leadership. The Torch Award is one of the most appreciated forms of recognition a teacher can receive.

Fifth grade students at St. James Elementary School concluded their Astronomy Unit by taking part in a unique MST project. Students were challenged to design, build, and test their own “Mars Rover.” Students were only able

to use recyclable materials such as cardboard boxes, plastic bottles, and bottle caps in order to make their Rover adhere to the specifications and constraints given to them by their teacher. When all the projects were completed, students

officially tested them to see how far they would roll. The Rover that went the farthest went almost 10 meters on its own! Congratulations to all students for all their hard work!

Thanks to Karissa Setran, 8th grade student, All Access Productions performed their show No More Victims on Friday, April 11th, at Accompsett Middle School. Karissa is the lead

dancer in the show and coordinated the booking of this powerful cultural arts program. All Access Productions delivered a moving bullying prevention message and stressed the importance

of demonstrating empathy for others. At the end of the show, the students were given an opportunity to listen to an insightful motivational speaker and ask follow-up questions.

Each year on April 28th, The Long Island Workers’ Memorial Day Committee organizes a memorial service dedicated to the memory and honor of those Long Island workers who have died due to a workplace injury or illness. On April 12th, the Troop conducted a community service cleanup project on the Workers’ Memorial

MASTER TEACHERS - Three Smithtown High School East teachers – Elizabeth Philp (Mathematics), Marianne Schoepflin (Mathematics), and Gillian Winters (Science) – were among 42 Long Island teachers named as New York State Master Teachers on April 14th — the first educators from Long Island to receive this recognition. Only 215 teachers state-wide earned this distinction which recognizes the work of the highest-performing Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics educators. This program encourages educators to mentor their peers and deepen their own scholarship and professional development. NIGHT AT THE RACES - The Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation held another winning event, Night At The Races, raising more than $65,000 to benefit its cardiac services. Major sponsors included $25,000 from the Guilds of Good Samaritan Hospital and $15,000 from the West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition. Guests were welcomed to a Kentucky Derby themed nightclub where they had the opportunity to play various casino games, win prizes and enter a “Best In Show” hat contest.

Hauppauge High School IB film students Jimmy Bie, Daniel Nasta and Matt Fresolone won Best in Show for their original film, titled Undisturbed, at the Long Island Media Arts Show and also took Second Place in the Drama Category at the Locust Valley Film Festival.

Most recently, the Hauppauge High School juniors were selected by the Suffolk County Film Commission to present Undisturbed at the 2014 First Exposure Student Film Festival to be held on May 17th at the Huntington Cinema Arts Centre.

Jeanine Aupperle also took Second Place for her Public Service Announcement, titled Perseverance, in the Locust Valley Film Festival’s PSA category. Aupperle is a senior at Hauppauge High School.

COMMUNITY SERVICE FAIR - On April 28th, Smithtown High School East Seniors Laura Pugliese and Rachel Liebowitz organized a Community Service Fair at the school. Students had the opportunity to speak with representatives from various organizations about their functions and to learn what roles students can play to help. This event helped raise a greater awareness of the need for volunteers in the community and the special roles these organizations play in assisting those in need.

Support Group Staff chaplains from St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center Pastoral Care will hold a six week bereavement support group meeting Tuesdays, beginning May 20th through June 24th, from 2 to 3:30 p.m.

The mutual support of a bereavement group can play an important role in your emotional well-being. Bereavement groups allow those who have lost a loved one share their struggles and feelings with others who have experienced a
