The Museum of American Armor at Old Bethpage Village Restoration, 1303 Round Swamp Road, Old Bethpage becomes an embattled European countryside of 1945 during the weekend of May 17th and 18th between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. as World War II armor advances down country lanes and living historians maneuver across open fields before thousands of
visitors during the 70th anniversary of the end of that epic conflict. Admission is $10 for adults, $7 for seniors and veterans and children between the ages of 5 and 12. Active duty military personnel with I.D. are admitted for free. Presentations will include tactical military exercises, displays of period weapons and an armor parade that includes a Sherman

Of Memories Made & Yet To Come By: Jamie Lynn Ryan As I get ready to head off to a dear friend’s graduation on this fine spring afternoon, I am reminded of a similarly lovely day 11 years ago when I donned a cap and gown to receive my BFA in Journalism from C.W. Post. The four years spent on that sprawling campus in Upper Brookville were full of fond memories… reading Leaves of Grass on the lawn in front of the Philosophy building, strolling through the Chipmunk Trail on the way to class, lounging on the Great Lawn with friends, studying in the Honors
Lounge, aimlessly wandering through the library’s book stacks... Being a commuter student, the challenge was always to assimilate into campus life, a task made much easier by my involvement in the Honors Program. Many a day was spent planning events, fundraising, working on our very own newsletter, The Athena, and networking with the best and the brightest administrators, professors and students. Perhaps the greatest benefit, though, was the lasting friendships made within the walls of that lounge, those forged on the first day of
Freshman Seminar that have endured until today, 15 years later. As a junior and senior, I was fortunate enough to serve as a Peer Mentor, leading my very own Freshman Seminar classes, and bearing witness to the next generation of blossoming friendships. Which brings me back to today, as one of those “first friends” prepares to accept a Masters Degree on the very same campus, under the big tent on the famed Great Lawn, and sets out to embark on the next stage of her career. What an exciting moment, what a memorable journey… one that, in so many ways, is just beginning.

Historical Perspective Under the direction of social studies teacher Christy Ortiz, Accompsett Middle School students recently conducted video interviews with several longtime Smithtown residents as part of an oral history project held in conjunction with Hofstra University in recognition of Smithtown’s Sesquarcentennial. Prior to their interviews, the students researched the history of the town and learned about their subjects’ respective backgrounds. Lillian Munro and Barbara Ludder were two of the interviewees. Ludder’s family ran a large nursery business that once stood on the site of the current Uncle Giuseppe’s grocery store, while Munro’s husband was a descendent of the famous Whippoorwill family, who ran a farm in nearby Hauppauge. Both women
attended the New York Avenue School together and wore their old school sweaters to the interview. “These students had some very good questions,” said Ludder. “They really did their homework. Tom Hancock, a longtime resident of the Village of the Branch who was born and raised in Smithtown, also attended the New York Ave School and still keeps in touch with many of his former classmates. “We were all one big happy family,” said Hancock. “We considered ourselves brothers and sisters.” Hancock said that grandfather, an immigrant from Italy, was a tile worker who learned about Smithtown from an advertisement he saw while working in a NYC subway. It read “Come to Smithtown: A Sportsmans
Paradise.” As someone who grew up enjoying the Nissequogue River, Hancock could understand why his grandfather moved here. Other scheduled interviewees included the daughter of the former Smithtown police chief, a Kings Park Psychiatric Hospital historian and a former Town Republican Committee member. All interviews were conducted and recorded in the AMS library media center. Since the beginning of the school year, Smithtown CSD teachers have been focused on presenting engaging, hands-on activities to teach students about Smithtown’s past and progression leading up to today. Many more activities are being planned to celebrate Smithtown’s 350th anniversary and educate students on the town’s rich history.
Spreading Civility Seven students from Smithtown High Schools East and West were recently honored at the annual Suffolk County Yom HaShoah Holocaust Remembrance Day. Coordinated by the Jewish Community Relations Council of Long Island, the event honors students who work to create a more civil society through volunteering,
building ties across different communities and intergenerational projects. Held at the Suffolk Center on the Holocaust, Diversity and Human Understanding located at Suffolk County Community College in Selden, the event also brought honorees together with Holocaust survivor Werner Reich. April is Holocaust Remembrance Month.
Smithtown CSD students honored were Victoria Grasso (HSW), Sarah Harrington (HSW), Brittnay McCaffrey (HSE), Luke Peterson (HSE), Ryan Powderly-Gross (HSW), Frank Speciale (HSW) and Samantha Tannenbaum (HSW). Each honoree received a citation from a County elected official and a certificate from the JCRC-LI.

Honoring Seniors
A number of Hauppauge School District’s Senior Citizens were honored with heartfelt gratitude at the Annual Senior Citizen Recognition Dinner, which recently was held at Hauppauge High School. This annual event is one way that the Hauppauge School District, PTAs, business community and residents
thank the senior citizens and recognize them for their contributions to the Hauppauge District and the community. District administrators, staff and PTAs prepared a delectable pasta and meatball feast, which was served to the honored guests by the Board of Education members, High School National Honor
Society and Interact Club students. The High School’s Musical Theatre Class entertained the senior citizens with a selection of Broadway show tunes during dinner and dessert. The evening also was highlighted by an All-District Jazz Concert performed by students from all the District’s schools.

The Smithtown Central School District’s Guidance and Related Student Services department recently hosted a Grade 11 College Fair and Information Night at Smithtown High School West. Smithtown CSD Administrator for Guidance and Related Student Services Ingrid Hrvatin,
guidance counselors and support staff were on hand to answer questions from Smithtown CSD juniors from High Schools East and West and their parents. Guests had the opportunity to interact with admissions representatives from more than 95 colleges and universities regarding admission criteria, popular majors, finance,

They were also provided with a list of important questions to ask when visiting colleges, as students and parents were actively engaged in dialogue throughout the evening. Ride for Life is annual event in which ALS patients ride their electric wheelchairs down the highways and local streets from Greenport, New York to Washington Square Park in New York City. Their mission is to raise public awareness of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), assist research in finding a cure, support ALS patients and their families and provide
the ALS community with the latest ALS related news, information and inspiration. One of the Ride for Life participants, Chris Pendergast, has visited Forest Brook twice this year. He came in the fall to support the staff’s participation in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge and then again in March for an inspirational assembly for grade 3-5 students.

On Saturday, May 23rd, the eighth annual Cpl Christopher G. Scherer “I Did the Grid” 4 Mile Competitive Run, 1 Mile Fun Run, and 4 Mile Recreational Run / Walk will be taking place on the streets of East Northport. On July 21st, 2007, Christopher Schererm who was a Corporal in the Marine Corpsm lost his life while serving our Country in the Al Anbar Province of Iraq. He was born and raised in East Northport and grew up playing in the neighborhood that he fondly referred to as ‘The Grid.’ On the first day of Memorial Day weekend, participants of all ages can experience four miles of the [grid] streets of East Northport while running, jogging or walking from the starting and ending location at Pulaski Road School. On the morning of the race, it is asked that you to promise not to forget, nor let your children or their children forget, that Chris
and his fellow warriors died so that we might live free. To honor Chris and all of the men and women who have given their lives in service to the United States of America, it is asked that you give up any personal awards for this day. Instead, each bib will have the printed names of fallen military from either Operation Enduring Freedom or Operation Iraqi Freedom. Each participant will carry that name and, upon completion of the course, will ring a bell to signify that the Airman, Coast Guardsman, Sailor, Soldier or Marine named on the bib will be remembered for making the ultimate sacrifice to protect our freedoms. • 8 a.m. – 4 Mile Competitive Run (under 12 minute miles); $30.00 for all participants (t-shirt included) • 9 a.m. – 1 Mile Fun Run (all welcome); $5.00 Under 12 (no t-shirt), $15.00 Under

Options for Community Living’s Comedy Night fundraising event at the Brokerage Comedy Club in Bellmore was the first of more “serious” successes to come. More than 100 employees and friends came out to support Options, while enjoying the comedic talents of Eric Lyden.
In addition to the comedy show, guests had an opportunity to bid on gift baskets, which included donations from Martha Clara Vineyards, Uncle Giuseppe’s and many other area retailers. The Comedy Night raised more than $3,800, which will be used to support Options’ vital programs that provide
housing and services for Long Islanders in need. “We all had a great night!” said Yolanda Robano-Gross, Options’ executive director. “We sold out of all of our tickets, and we had wonderful donated prizes to raffle. It was a thoroughly entertaining evening and a complete success for all involved.”

A chorus of cheers and bagpipers could be heard as patients with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or Lou Gehrig’s disease) rode onto the Stony Brook University Campus in their power wheelchairs at the annual Ride for Life event. Stony Brook University athletes escorted the Riders who rode to Stony Brook to take part in the Pinwheel Remembrance Ceremony on May 2nd, the cornerstone event of the 12-day power wheelchair Ride for Life trek across Long Island that ends in Manhattan on May 9th. C h r i s t o p h e r Pendergast, President and Founder of Ride for Life, and a 22-year ALS patient and advocate, led the way with six other ALS patients as they rode to the ceremony area, where 6,000 pinwheels were displayed. The pinwheels symbolize the lives lost to ALS each year. At the Pinwheel Remembrance Ceremony, the names of 90 patients lost to ALS
were read aloud. The 90 names, requested by their family members to be read, also represent the fact that every 90 minutes someone dies from ALS. A candle was lit for each individual in their memory. Supporters from Stony Brook Medicine gathered with the family and friends of patients to celebrate hope – as symbolized by the pinwheels that a cure for ALS is ‘blowin in the wind.’ “ALS is a remarkable challenge to physicians and neuroscientists, but this is an exciting time in the Neurosciences and through research we continue to seek better treatments and hopefully a cure,” said Kenneth Kaushansky, MD, Senior Vice President, Health Sciences, and Dean of the Stony Brook University School of Medicine. “We are all here today to join together in hope and strive to make ALS a tragedy of the past.” During the ceremony,
a $60,000 donation was announced to the Ride for Life on behalf of the ALS Association, Greater New York Chapter. The funds will be used to support clinical services and research at Stony Brook’s Christopher Pendergast ALS Center of Excellence, the only ALS Associationcertified center on Long Island. Keynote speaker Al Jordan, a Ride for Life committee member and Associate Dean of Student & Minority Affairs in the School of Medicine, had attendees join hands as a sign of unity to fight against ALS and hope for a cure. A recitation prayer by the Reverend Rich Allen of Sayville United Methodist Church added to the spirit of hope at the event. The ceremony closed with a jolt into the sky – as a 16-rocket launch salute took place. The “spirit salutes,” as they were referred to, symbolized the 16 lives lost to ALS every day.

Volunteers Needed The Jimmy Fund is looking for local movie lovers with big hearts and a few spare hours to help raise money for cancer care and research at DanaFarber Cancer Institute this summer. The Jimmy Fund/Variety Children’s Charities Theatre Collections Program is
seeking volunteers to pass collection canisters to guests in the below Holtsville movie theatres following a brief Jimmy Fund trailer that will be shown before a feature film. Island 16 Cinema de Lux at 185 Morris Avenue Volunteers are needed
during select movie times each day of the week from June 12th to July 30th at theaters in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, and Ohio. All contributions go directly to the Jimmy Fund, which supports lifesaving adult and pediatric patient care and
cancer research at DanaFarber. Now in its 66th year, the program launched in 1949 and is the Jimmy Fund’s oldest annual fundraising effort. Since its inception the program has raised more than $30 million. In its early years, the Theatre Program attracted the
