By Megan Brown, Navy Office of Community Outreach ATLANTIC OCEAN A 2017 Commack High School graduate and native of Commack, New York, is serving aboard USS Iwo Jima, a U.S. Navy Waspclass amphibious assault ship. Petty Officer Third Class Daniel Vintimilla joined the Navy three years ago and was the first generation in his family to serve. “I aim to make a name for myself and to be as successful as I can be to make up for the sacrifices my parents made for me,” said Vintimilla. Today, Vintimilla serves as a machinist’s mate responsible for working on, operating and maintaining marine boilers which provide steam for propulsion of naval ships. “I also test the test and treat water, fuel and oil that we use for

propulsion boilers and associated equipment,” said Vintimilla. Iwo Jima is the seventh Wasp-class amphibious assault ship and the second ship in the U.S. Navy to bear that name. The ship was named for the Battle of Iwo Jima of World War II. According to Navy officials, amphibious assault ships are designed to deliver U.S. Marines and their equipment where they are needed to support a variety of missions ranging from amphibious assaults to humanitarian relief efforts. Designed to be versatile, the ship has the option of simultaneously using helicopters, Harrier jets, and Landing Craft Air Cushioned (LCAC), as well as conventional landing craft and assault vehicles in various combinations. According to Vintimilla, the values required to succeed in the Navy are similar to those found in

Commack. “Commack taught me to excel in problem solving in situations that I have experienced and scenarios that come up unexpected,” said Commack. Though there are many opportunities for sailors to earn recognition in their command, community and career, Vintimilla is most proud of saving enough money to buy a house for future investment. As a member of the U.S. Navy, Vintimilla, as well as other sailors, know they are part of a tradition providing the Navy the nation needs. “Serving in the Navy allows me to open up doors for more opportunities and jobs for the future though the different programs and qualifications I have and can obtain throughout my Naval career.” added Vintimilla.

Car Enthusiasts Give Back On Saturday, May 1, 2021 Legislator Leslie Kennedy recognized the volunteerism, community spirit, and general sense of collegiality of the historical car community. Led by Patty and Phil Mancuso in their Mustang GT 500, more than 20 Chevys, Dodges, Oldsmobiles, and other performance cars toured

through the neighborhoods of Commack. Residents got a chance to see real rolling history up close and personal, and the whole group had a great day, with most of the convertible tops put down to enjoy the sunshine. It was a great day in Commack, as Legislator Kennedy noted her strong regard for the community she grew up in.

DOGWOOD POETS NAMED GRAND CHAMPIONS - Ms. Eichenlaub and Ms. Krug’s classes at Dogwood Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District have been reading and writing poetry together, and recently placed as grand champions in the Walt Whitman Poetry Contest. This is an international contest with more than 1,500 poems submitted from throughout the world. Hundreds of vendors participate and thousands of people attend and support the local business community. “Smithtown Festival has been a major attraction for years. It was sorely missed last year by our Chamber members, businesses and vendors, as well as visitors who attend from throughout Long Island when it was cancelled due to the pandemic,” said Barbara Franco, the Greater Smithtown Chamber of Commerce Executive Director. “I can’t tell you how excited our members and Main Street businesses are that we will have our Festival Day on June 6 this year. In the past we have had thousands of people to downtown Smithtown for this festival,” Franco noted. Diane Motherway, the Kings Park Chamber

Executive Director, has scheduled their annual Kings Park Day for Saturday, June 19, echoes these sentiments. The St. James Chamber is in the process of planning their concerts, movie nights and fall festival. The East Northport Chamber is looking forward to holding their annual weekend festival in early September. Chambers have to plan months in advance and obtain permits in order to hold these events. The Smithtown Chamber is taking all of the necessary precautions to comply with the guidelines such as issuing wristbands to all participants, designating entrance and exit ways, as well as making facemasks and hand sanitizer available to all. Through the cooperation of the New York State Department of Transportation and the Suffolk County 4th Police Precinct, Route 25A/ Main Street will be closed to vehicle traffic during Festival Day to insure the public’s safety.

Spirit’s Promise Equine Rescue is offering Summer Clinics every week from Monday, June 28 through Monday, August 30. During the clinic children will learn the ins and outs of a working horse rescue and will help groom, feed and care for the horses and other animals on the farm. Representatives from the Kings Park, Smithtown, St. James Nesconset and East Northport Chambers joined Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta, a member of the Legislature’s Economic Development Committee, Legislator Leslie Kennedy, NYS Assemblyman Mike Fitzpatrick and other officials and businesses to address the need to increase the number of people allowed at outside festival/events. Currently, the maximum allowable number of people is 200 for outdoor events. “The health and well-being of our residents is of paramount importance, and the same is true of our local businesses who have been financially devastated by the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Suffolk Legislator Rob Trotta. “I don’t understand why the Governor is restricting the number when he said the New York State Fair will open later this summer. Our local small businesses are hurting and we need to do everything within our power to help them

Hope House Ministries is a non-profit organization located in Port Jefferson. They provide compassionate, comprehensive and competent care for the poor, the marginal and the wounded among us. This commitment is woven in the Gospel vision that all life is sacred and every human person is unique and has the right to be respected and protected. They have accomplished much over the 40+ years they have been helping others with minimal financial assistance from federal, state or county agencies. They depend on the generosity of private contributions, fundraising events and corporate donations. Hope House Ministries services people in both Nassau County and Suffolk County, offering services free of charge. Together, their staff and volunteers have created an empowering sense of family and community that are the change agents, helping young people grow in self-discipline, critical thinking, problem solving skills and personal responsibility. There are so many ways that this non-profit can truly help you get your life on a better track. Additionally, there are plenty of ways for people to get involved in helping others through volunteering. Over the past 40 years, thousands of people have donated their time and talent to help this organization reach those in need. In 2013, the founder of Hope House Ministries approached long-time supporters of this organization, Barbara and Arti, with an idea of a retail space that could bring in needed funds for Little Portion Frirary, a home which houses 65 young men in recovery of drug and alcohol addiction that is ran by Hope House Ministries. The hope was that the proceeds that would potentially be brought in from a retail space could pay for these young men’s college classes, food, utilities and transportation costs. Some years later, the perfect location for a store was found and they decided to open up a beautiful boutique there. Since their organization is all about second chances, they called it Hope

Springs Eternal Second Chance Boutique. This boutique is open to the public MondaySaturday from 11AM-5PM. After rent and utilities are paid, all the rest of the proceeds go directly to the organization, which helps those in need. In addition to that, the boutique makes many homeless individuals feel loved and cared for by giving them items of clothing free of charge and allowing them to use their bathroom when needed. The TM treatment provided 16 sessions over 12 weeks, with twice-aday daily home practice. PTSD symptom severity was assessed with the Clinician-Administered PTSD Scale for DSM-5, and patient self-report with the PTSD Checklist for DSM-5. The results showed large effect sizes, indicating a strong TM treatment

impact in reducing trauma symptoms for both PTSD measures. Life’s WORC’s Family Center for Autism Announces Scholarship Program Life’s WORC (www. lifesworc.org), a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and autism through its residential, community and trust services, which this year is celebrating its 50th anniversary – Celebrate 50! - wants Long Island, Queens and Manhattan residents to know that its Family Center for Autism in Garden City, NY offers scholarships to help those who are financiallychallenged to gain access to its wide range of programs. In addition to its services, which include Behavioral Analysis Services, Family Support Services, and School-based Services, the Center offers art camps, sports and fitness, music

and movement, scient and tech, salon and spa, and vocational programs. Life’s WORC Family Center for Autism’s Senior Director Nicky Faranda noted that, “Through the generosity of private donors, we are able to offer those in need scholarships ranging from $500 to $1,500 to pay for any of our program classes. To date, we have raised almost $200,000 which has enabled children through adults to participate in programs designed to build skills in specific areas, while encouraging socialization, recreation and the development of valuable life skills.” To date, the Life’s WORC Family Center for Autism has awarded over 239 scholarships valued at $245,589 for

individuals with autism. The scholarship program, which was first introduced in 2015, was created when it became clear that there were many in the community who simply did not have the additional financial resources to pay for the Center’s programs despite the fees being kept to a minimum.
