Golf Classic Set On Monday, June 20, 2016 the American Heart Association will be hosting its 28th Annual Golf Classic-A Joel Hamroff Memorial Tribute at the Meadow Brook Club in Jericho. Event Co-Chairs Steven Yanofsky, Parts Authority, Inc. and Harry Armon, ARCAP Partners, LLC along with the corporate and community leadership of Long Island will be participating to

increase awareness of the importance of physical activity. This event provides an excellent networking opportunity while promoting exercise and physical activity. This year’s event will honor Louis C. Grassi, CPA, CFE, Grassi & Co. The American Heart Association is excited to announce that the Tennis Classic will once again be a part of the

day’s events. The Tennis Classic will take place at the Crest Hollow County Club in Woodbury. Jill Byrne and Yvonne Evelyn will Co-Chair the Tennis event. Paul Woodstock, Executive Vice President, U.S. Sales & Marketing, Biotronik Corp. will be the Tennis honoree. Much progress has been made in the fight against heart disease and stroke. However, many Americans

are still not getting the proper amount of exercise that will effectively combat risk factors for serious health issues. According to the American Heart Association, nearly 70 percent of American adults get no regular physical activity. Yet contrary to common perceptions, physical activity is just as important in preventing heart disease as other modifiable risk factors

including smoking, cholesterol and blood pressure. A person is 1.5 to 2.4 times more likely to have coronary heart disease if he or she is inactive. Adult (and childhood) obesity/ overweight level continues to increase: 65% of all Adults are obese or overweight. There will be morning and afternoon shotgun starts to accommodate

all participants for the golf event. There will also be themed holes and raffles along the 18-hole course. Cocktail dinner reception and awards will follow. For Tennis, a light morning breakfast will be served with round robin play to follow. Lunch will be served after the tournament. Brisk walking around

Readers have been writing in lately, inquiring as to my whereabouts, my wellbeing, my latest exploits… So I’m here, as requested, to fill you all in on my comings and goings – well, as much as one can come and go in the confines of a one-gallon aquarium, but you know… The latest bit of exciting news – potentially, anyway – is my Human’s impending purchase of a friend for me! Yes, that’s right, Buddy the Betta will soon be accompanied by the likes of a small, colorful (but not too colorful), aquatic snail. I’m thinking purple, to

complement my gorgeous aqua fins. The best part is that, in addition to having a companion for those ohso-long days when my Human leaves me to my own devices, my new little friend can also serve as a portable vacuum cleaner of sorts. With my larger residence, the maintenance can be a bit much, and I do like immaculate living quarters. I’ve even picked out a name – “Squeegee.” Oh what fun we will have together, so long as he keeps those long tentacles off my delicate fins, of course... and away from my food… and off of my favorite bedtime leaf… and, well, we’ll see how it

goes. This could be shortlived. Other than that, life in the bowl is pretty much status quo. I’m going on 15 months old, still as vibrant and beautiful (and humble) as ever, and my Human has graduated to feeding me twice a day – small portions, but still, I’ll take what I can get. It’s a good life – especially when Grammy comes to visit and makes kissy-faces at me. ‘Til next time, this is Buddy, anxiously awaiting the arrival of my new googly-eyed roommate. Stay tuned for the next installment: The Adventures of Buddy & Squeegee in an upcoming issue.

Smithtown High School East had two finalist teams – Allison Adams and Tara Korkus in the Independent Business Plan Competition and Ryan Micozzi in the Hospitality and Tourism Professional Selling Event. Micozzi also received a medal for his presentation. In addition, Micozzi and Jainee Gabrielsen were honored again for winning the Herff Jones Marketing Results Challenge.

Smithtown High School West had two finalist teams and a Top 10 Overall Finalist Team. Darian Kane-Stolz and Victoria Tiranno were named a finalist in the Entrepreneurship Promotion Project. The team of Cole DeMarco and Allison Schuchman secured a finalist spot in the Sports & Entertainment Marketing Operations Research Event and were also named a Top 10 Overall Finalist.

Three Eagles Honored

Suffolk County Legislator Robert Trotta praised Thomas McGee and George Gonatas, whom he coached in the Kings Park Soccer League when they were younger, for achieving the esteemed rank of Eagle Scout. Thomas of Kings Park became Troop 75’s 75th Eagle Scout and George of Fort Salonga was the troop’s 76 Eagle Scout. For his Eagle Scout Leadership Project, Thomas supervised other scouts from the troop in the construction of five

benches for the Boys Varsity Locker Room at Kings Park High School. George’s Community Leadership Project involved working with his troop members to build a new shotput circle at Kings Park High School. As students at the school, they hope their projects will encourage more scouts to give back to their schools. “Becoming an Eagle Shout is an amazing achievement and is something that you have accomplished while still a

teenager. It is a recognition that will stay with you for the rest of your lives,” said Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta, who represents the district. “Through your years of scouting you have attained a skill set and leadership qualities that you can apply in college and in your careers to make this a better community. What you have done is very impressive and we all expect great things from you in the future,” added Legislator Trotta.

Michael removed an old metal shed that was on their property and prepared the land for a new shed; once the new shed was built Michael spent his time finishing off the shed with new paint and caulking. Grant dedicated his time to rebuilding the front entrance at the American Legion Hall, he removed the old door and framing and installed a new door as well as energy efficient glass panels. Gregory’s project was for the benefit of Family Residences and Essential

Enterprises (FREE), which is a non-profit organization that helps developmentally disabled adults to learn life skills. Greg built a walking path which is 300 feet long and 4 feet wide which can be used therapeutically to calm clients who become upset during the day. Leslie was pleased to present each of the boys a proclamation with the seal of the County Legislature fixed upon it. “These three young men have done great things for their community and I am happy to celebrate this milestone in the life of a Scout, I am sure they will all go on to accomplish even greater things in life,” said Legislator Kennedy.

On Monday, April 25th, Hauppauge’s Boy Scout Troop 343 were joined by Troop 200 (Elwood) Boy Scouts as they all participated in an afternoon of fun at the Cradle of Aviation Museum in Uniondale, Nassau County. The youths earned the Aviation Merit Badge, which can be used during their quest to earn the rank of Eagle Scout. Their merit badge councilor and Cradle of

Aviation Docent, Tim VanWickler, is an Eagle Scout. He taught the Scouts the principles and laws of flight, introduced them to various jets and planes used throughout history, and even allowed them to create their own planes made of Styrofoam and glide them around the building. The session was approximately 2.5 hours long, and the scouts were given a nearly-full tour of

Sharpening Skills Virtual Enterprise students from Smithtown Central School District competed in the Virtual Enterprises International Trade Show in New York City on April 19th. The show allows Virtual Enterprise students from around the world to exhibit a wide range of products and tout their marketing campaigns. This year, 165 businesses competed to log sales of highly desired goods and services to increase their bottom line and sustain their virtual employees’ lifestyles. Smithtown High School East’s business,

ProTeen, participated in the virtual simulation of conducting real business transactions in sales and purchases along with all tasks involved in creating a merchandising display and promotional material for their virtual business. Students networked with business leaders, college representatives and fellow students from all around the world. B l u T u n e s Entertainment, Smithtown High School West’s team, sold their Bluetooth/ solar rechargeable audio products to more than 1,000 spectators at

the trade show. Their professional trade booth, which included speakers, lights and a Wii Dance Competition, drew plenty of attention from crowds. The students have been designing and planning their trade booth for more than two months. Their promotional plan included special discounts for Wii Dance winners, product bundle discounts, free BluTunes customized frisbee giveaways for highend purchases and free Instagram photos for select purchases.

Chamber Music Festival Auditions for the 35th Anniversary Season of the LIU Post Chamber Music Festival will be held on May 15th and 16th, and June 5th, 6th and 13th or by special appointment. The LIU Post Chamber Music Festival offers the opportunity to study and perform in a rich musical environment and includes various categories of participation - an Artistry Program for young professionals and pre-formed chamber ensembles; a Performance Program for college & conservatory musicians; an Advanced Program for students ages 15 to 18 and a Seminar Program for

students ages 9 to 14. In addition, the Festival’s commitment to music education and chamber music is the focus of the Advancement of Chamber Music Program for Music Educators who are interested in developing chamber music programs or expanding existing programs at their schools. The Festival Faculty includes The Pierrot Consort, the faculty ensemble-in-residence at LIU Post, with additional Festival Faculty and special guest artists including well-known guest artist Larry Dutton, violist with the Emerson String Quartet, members of the

Imani Winds and other guest artists. The Festival is held as part of the College of Arts, Communications and Design, and the Department of Music at LIU Post. of public concerts at Hillwood Recital Hall and Tilles Center for the Performing Arts featuring The Pierrot Consort and guest artists; the Festival Chamber Orchestra and chamber music performed by Festival Participants. The Festival also includes musicianship classes, individual master classes, chamber music performance classes and a conducting program – an overview of conducting and rehearsal techniques, score study, musical style, and full orchestral and chamber orchestral repertoire. Conducting participants attend master classes, receive training

with the Conductors’ Ensemble and actively observe rehearsals of the Festival Chamber Orchestra. The non-refundable application/audition fee is $40.
