On Friday, April 28th, Congressman Lee Zeldin hosted his third annual art reception at Artspace in Patchogue, where he announced Enru Wang, a high school student at Smithtown Christian School, as the 2017 winner of the Congressional Art Competition for the First Congressional District: “The Artistic Discovery Contest.” In attendance at the event were the fifteen finalists, their art teachers and families, Artspace curator Tracy Todd Hunter, and local artists who served as judges. The House of Representatives hosts a nationwide high school art competition every spring to raise awareness of the importance of art programs in our schools, and to recognize and celebrate the creativity and diversity of our art students. The winning artwork for each congressional district is displayed in the United States Capitol for one year. The fifteen finalists include: Giulliana Lorenzo, Bellport High School, Lynda Hernandez, East Hampton High School, Kathleen McGovern, East Hampton High School, Jonathan Realmuto, East Hampton High School, Janie Oglesby, Longwood High School, Syriah Scott, Longwood High School, Gabriella Hassildine, Mattituck High School, Lori Alouidor, Smithtown Christian School, Donna Cheridor, Smithtown Christian School, Jenna Ciarfello, Smithtown Christian School, Samantha Cubas, Smithtown Christian School, Nadya DaRocha, Smithtown Christian School, Alexandra Pepper, Smithtown Christian School, Austin Sala, Smithtown Christian School, and Enru Wang, Smithtown Christian School. BULLS RUN BENEFIT - On April 23rd, Smithtown High School West Leadership students organized the “Running with the Bulls” race to benefit Angela’s House. It was a night under the stars, as the fifth-graders at St. James Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District showed off their poetic prowess during the school’s annual Poetry
Café on April 26th. In the transformed gymnasium, invited guests lounged on cozy couches, sat at café tables complete with dimly lit candles and snapped their fingers as each student shared
their original poetry. The Poetry Café gave students a chance to not only show off their writing skills, but also their public speaking and presentation skills.

country competing at the International Competition in Anaheim. Eric Zhang from Smithtown High School East was named a finalist in the Business Finance competition. Kathy Anderson, also from Smithtown High School East, received the prestigious M& M Scholarship from National
DECA. From Smithtown High School West, Anya Ording was named a finalist and top 10 overall finalist in the Principles of Marketing event, and Rachel Chapman and Courtney Grafstein in the Public Relations event were finalists and top 10 overall finalists for their anti-bullying campaign.

quickly time does fly. I can’t say I recall the exact start date of any previous jobs; but this one happened to coincide with my grandmother’s birthday, and so it was instantly commemorated for being just a bit more special. Bittersweet, perhaps, since her passing… but May 2nd shall always hold a place in my heart. It’s funny how we place such importance on certain dates, knowing full well that each subsequent year will bring with it an entirely different set of emotions and circumstances; in effect, no two anniversaries will ever be the same, whether it be of the celebratory or the solemn
years ago what I would be doing in the year 2017, I can’t say I would have pinpointed my current situation for what it is; nor would I have had any real inkling as to what would transpire in the decade to come. There is something to be said for longevity, to be sure. As long as you are able to find fulfillment in your daily life, who’s to say what you “should” be doing at any stage? Only you. The calendar is merely a guideline, a means of breaking up the years into more manageable chunks of time by which to take a step back and evaluate. One day at a time, that’s about all most
you can be sure of. Who knows what the next twelve years might bring. Maybe I’ll be writing my 1000th column for South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers. Perhaps I’ll be taking photos as I journey from one corner of the world to another, journaling as I travel to undiscovered lands. Or maybe, I’ll have gotten all that out of my system and decided to settle down in a house in the suburbs with the white picket fence. Who knows. In the meantime, another May 2nd has come and gone, very different from the last and most likely nothing like the next. Only time will tell.

Kindness Initiative Tackan Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District has been awarded a $500 grant on behalf of Safe Fleet and Seon’s United Against Bullying Grant Program. These funds are being used to further Tackan’s efforts to promote kindness, understanding and integration within
its diverse student body. Throughout the year, Tackan students have been participating in the No Place For Hate initiative, which promotes those same core values. The student body has been involved in numerous schoolwide events geared toward these directives, which will culminate on

opened up a world as the fourth-graders learned about the food chain using plankton. The students recorded their observations and worked together to identify the different organisms found in the ocean water.

Young Inventors
The next Suffolk County Inventors and Entrepreneurs Meeting will feature students from Commack High School, who have been working since September on actual products to display. Students in science research, engineering, and other classes bounced their ideas off inventors John Mruz and Gary Shaw to solidify their products. The student’s inventions range from an app to help students with stress, to several adaptations to assist persons with disabilities, to a hydroelectric device. You’re invited to attend
this fantastic program that highlights the ideas of the next generation of Inventors! The Inventors and Entrepreneurs meeting will take place on Tuesday, May 16th from 7 to 9 p.m. at the H. Student Initiative Seventh-graders at Nesaquake Middle School in the Smithtown Central School District learned firsthand about animal rescue and what they can do in their own communities when Stephen Edghill from Animal Planet’s show Guardians of Rescue visited the school on May 1st. The Guardians of Rescue organization works on Long Island and surrounding areas
to help animals that may be neglected or abused. Edghill spoke to the students about how they can educate people on caring for their pets and how they can get the word out in their communities. Nesaquake Middle School students work on the Genius Hour, which allows them one hour per week during school to explore their passions and encourages creativity.
Students in Marissa LoSardo’s seventhgrade English class are currently working on an empathy project and many students chose animal shelters to support. After a question and answer session following Edghill’s presentation, the students felt empowered to spark a conversation and help make a change.

Vincent Hardina, a fourth-grader at Mt. Pleasant Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School, submitted one of 11 winning entries in this year’s Smithtown Youth Bureau’s letter writing contest. Hardina’s letter was
chosen among more than 400 submissions to the contest. He wrote a letter to thank local firefighters for the heroic work they do every day to protect the community. Hardina was recognized during the Town of Smithtown’s Global Youth Service Day
on April 22nd, where he had the opportunity to read his letter to honored guests, firefighters, police officers and EMTs. Global Youth Service Day is a worldwide event of activism that empowers youth to take action in their world.

Constitution Contest Ryan Slattery, a student at Accompsett Middle School in the Smithtown Central School District, was named a first-place winner in the Suffolk County Bar Association’s
We the People essay contest. As part of an extra credit assignment, Slattery submitted a 250-word essay about what the words “we the people” mean to him.
He was presented with a certificate and a $300 prize for his winning submission during the Suffolk County Bar Association’s annual meeting on May 1st.
Jillian Pesce, a senior in the Smithtown High School East Science Research Program, won first place and was awarded $500 in the Science and Society essay contest. The contest aimed to challenge students to write thoughtful, scientifically accurate responses to 10 iconic images from Brookhaven National Laboratory’s history. She read her essay aloud during the lab’s 70th anniversary celebration.
For her essay, Pesce chose an image of a scientist sitting next to large magnets about to be installed on what would be the Alternating Gradient Synchrotron, a key accelerator for particle experiments later conducted on the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. Smithtown High School East Principal Dr. Kevin Simmons said, “Jillian Pesce is an ardent researcher who embodies the best
qualities required for success as a future scientist. BNL’s recognition of her efforts serve as a strength in embracing the partnership that exists between our school’s and BNL’s scientific communities. Programs, such as this, highlight what is possible and attainable through diligent perseverance for each of the young researchers who were in attendance.”
