Naming Rights Secured Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center (BMHMC) and Long Island Events are excited to announce a new partnership, cementing the name BMHMC Amphitheater at Bald Hill. The Farmingville, Long Island venue that holds outside events and concerts was formerly known as the Pennysaver

Amphitheater at Bald Hill. The agreement, which goes into effect immediately, will feature the hospital’s brand identity throughout the venue as well as in event promotions. President and CEO of BMHMC Richard T. Margulis said “This year is proving to showcase the changes we have made at BMHMC, both inside our

hospital doors and out in the community. We are thrilled to join Long Island Events in supporting a venue that aligns with our focus on being there for the community. We are proud Long Islanders serving our community and now have an opportunity to connect with that community in a new and unique way.” Already home to the

biggest Country music concerts on Long Island and the Island Federal Concert Series, Long Island Events just announced a partnership with Live Nation and will work together to bring more live programming to the venue, including premier concerts and music festivals, as well as help to reorganize operations at

Traumatic Brain Injury, Multiple Sclerosis, Down Syndrome, Spina Bifida, Genetic Disorders and Emotional Disturbances. Every day, they have a different school drop off children at their location to benefit from their organization; they also offer group programs, individual lessons, corporate workshops and a program specifically designed for military members. Volunteers are the backbone of PalO-Mine, and there are many different ways to get involved. All volunteers must be at least 16 years of age, attend a volunteer orientation (orientations are held monthly), complete a training program and be available to volunteer a minimum of four hours per week. Some ways you may volunteer are: working directly with children and adults in lessons, working with therapy horses and performing barn chores, fundraising, and helping with property enhancement and landscaping. Lisa Gatti is the CEO & Founder of PalO-Mine Equestrian, Inc., a comprehensive therapeutic equine program that uses horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for individuals with disabilities and for other vulnerable populations. Through persistence, hard work and a passion to serve others, Lisa opened Pal-O-Mine in 1995 as a 501(C)(3) non-profit. Pal-O-Mine grew from having two programs, eight horses and 80 students per week to 11 programs, 25 horses and 400 students per week - and they continue to grow today! This organization sits on eight acres, with a 20-stall barn, handicapped accessible bathrooms, a new 100’ x 120’ indoor arena with state-of- theart footing and a rider hoisting system, and three outdoor riding arenas. They help an unbelievable amount of people, and their work is truly heartwarming. Individuals of all ages are welcome to take part in the programs they offer. They operate with five full-time employees, 35 independent contractors and 80 volunteers a week. Their riding instructors have experience with the following diagnoses: Autism Spectrum Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Sensory Processing Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Neurological Disorders, Cerebral Palsy,

Catholic Health Services (CHS) presented its Living the Mission Award to Assistant Vice President of Finance Donna Peguillan, CPA, for exemplifying CHS’s mission and values. Nominated for her outstanding qualities, Peguillan was recently honored at CHS’s Rockville Centre office. “Donna has helped me grow in my position,” said one of her staff members. “She puts her team first and herself last,” was another comment. In addition, a colleague noted, “She is always offering her assistance to other departments.” She

was further complimented for her affability, generosity and thoughtfulness, as well as for her dedication to CHS’s success. According to Peguillan, her CHS colleagues truly make her job enjoyable. Peguillan joined the corporate division of CHS Services in 2010 as assistant director of finance, following a tenure at CHS’s Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center as a manager of finance since 2007. Previously, she worked in the public accounting field while raising a family. In addition to being a licensed certified public account,

she holds a bachelor’s degree from Binghamton University and is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and Healthcare Financial Management Association. For many years, the Commack resident was involved in the Games for the Physically Challenged and also donated her time and enthusiasm in support of her children’s school and athletic programs. These teams earned the chance to compete at that post-season event following the FIRST Tech Challenge SBPLI Long Island Championship at Smithtown High School on February 9th. A total of 15 FIRST® Robotics Competition teams will represent Long Island at the FIRST World Championships in Detroit, April 25th-28th. Included among them is Team #810, the “Mechanical Bulls” from Smithtown, which won the SBPLI Long Island Regional FIRST Robotics Competition #2 on Saturday, April 14th, along with the event’s coveted Chairman’s Award and the Woodie Flowers Finalist Award. Also advancing is Team #5016, “Huntington Robotics”

from Huntington, which won the Chairman’s Award at SBPLI Long Island Regional #1, on April 11th, earning them a guaranteed spot. Team #6806, the “Mineola Wild Reds” from Mineola, the region’s only rookie team for 2018, took home the Rookie All-Star Award at Regional #2; while Team #2869, the “Regal Eagles,” earned the Engineering Inspiration Award at Regional #1; both will compete in the Championship. The book is told from the perspective of a girl named Katie, who although she is the little sister in the family, often needs to play the role of the big sister. Katie’s brother has special needs and the book explains what it’s like growing up with a sibling

glue, Borax, food coloring and water to create a “gak” slime, which was stretchy and sticky. The “flubber” slime they created next had a different texture, and students observed its different properties. At the end of the program, the third-graders were able to take their creations home to enjoy.

Kindness Challenge Author Amy McCoy made a special visit to Tackan Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District on April 26th for two assemblies with the students to help inspire them to be kind and better understand other’s differences. McCoy, author of “Little Big Sister,” spoke to the students why it’s always

presentation. Students learned about the different states of matter – solids, liquids and gases – and their different properties. To make the slime, the students had to turn a liquid into a gel, a state of matter in between a liquid and a solid. Each student had the opportunity to make two different types of slime. The first slime used

Power Brunch Smithtown Central School District, along with the Smithtown Industry Advisory Board’s Career Tracks Committee, hosted the 16th annual Female Power Brunch in the library of Smithtown High School East on April 26th. Approximately 40 business-minded female students from Smithtown High School East were in attendance to listen to

the dozen female guest speakers of the day. The day kicked off with a meetand-greet breakfast so the students could learn about the speakers and mentors, their career path and interests. Students heard from five different speakers before coming together for a self-portrait and sharing session. The remaining speakers shared

their messages after the networking brunch, where guests and students came together to talk about their college and career goals. Guest speakers touched on a wide range of topics and included business owners, a political candidate, a race car driver, account manager, author, air traffic controller, doctor and nurse.

Feeding Local Families Fourth-graders throughout Smithtown Central School District recently tied their learning activities in with donating to a local cause. As part of a Project Lead the Way activity, the fourth-graders were tasked with designing and modeling a system to unload boxes of food at a community food pantry. The students came up

with different prototypes of systems to best deliver and unload the food. After completing the activity, Project Lead the Way coach Kelly Bigliani asked the fourth-grade class to participate in a local food drive led by area Stop and Shop supermarkets called Feeding Our Families. The elementary schools collected more

than 700 pounds of nonperishable food items, which will be delivered to Island Harvest. On April 29th, the Smithtown High School East girls varsity softball team also collected donations, a total of 3,000 pounds, along with Bigliani at the Stop and Shop in South Setauket.

Taking on the Challenge

Two students from Great Hollow Middle School in the Smithtown Central District received honors for their participation in the Scholastic Challenge. Sixth-grader Hatim Husainy scored 86 percent, earning him the New York State Champion title. Eighth-grader Madeline Raeihle received the

highest score in her grade. The Scholastic Challenge is an annual national contest in which students are challenged to demonstrate a variety of problem-solving skills and knowledge in many academic areas. The online competition consisted of 100 questions covering a range of subjects, including

language and literature, geography, history, science, mathematics and general knowledge. The competition is open sixth- and eighthgrade students; this year approximately 5,000 students participated in the academic challenge.

For the second consecutive year, Smithtown High School East science research coordinator Maria Zeitlin has partnered with Brookhaven National Laboratory to provide an enrichment program open to all interested 10th-12th grade students.

Through the collaboration, 21 students have participated in the weekly scientific coding seminars, which runs on Fridays from the start of school until the end of April. At the final session on April 27th, instructor Dave Biersach, along

Fifth-graders at Dogwood Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District taught their classmates and audience members about the importance of always being kind to others and treating them the way they would like to be treated.

The fifth-graders performed the musical “Bugz” on April 26th and 27th with the songs and storyline delivering messages of tolerance and understanding the differences of others. Dressed as different types of bugs – including lady bugs, ants, honeybees, fireflies,

On Friday, April 27th, Congressman Lee Zeldin (R, NY-1) hosted his fourth annual art reception at Artspace in Patchogue, during which he announced Isabella Kosiba of Smithtown Christian School as the 2018 winner of the Congressional Art Competition for the First Congressional District: “The Artistic Discovery Contest.” In attendance at the event were the twelve finalists, their art teachers and families, Artspace curator Tracy Todd Hunter, and local artists who served as judges. The House of Representatives hosts a nationwide high school art competition every spring to raise awareness of the importance of art programs in our schools, and to recognize and celebrate the creativity and diversity of students. The winner’s artwork is displayed in the United States Capitol for one year. The third place winner, Sutton Reinboth-Lynch of East Hampton High School, and second place

Hot ‘n Cold ’Tis time for a bit of this and that, a collection of random thoughts and musings collected over time and compiled for your reading pleasure - or displeasure, as the case may be. But seriously, I do hope you’ll indulge this meandering assortment of musings. How about this weather? After waiting for what has seemed like months for spring to arrive - oh, wait… - it appears the season of growth has finally taken up residence over the shores of Long Island. Some might even go so far as to say time has fast forwarded right into summer; but we can be sure to experience a few more chilly days before it’s safe to put the jackets away for good. ’Til then, best to keep those flip flops on stand-by. There will be plenty of time for bare feet and bathing suits in the months to come. In the meantime, the trees have begun to explode with blossoms, and everyone is busy sprucing up their gardens - or, in my case, balcony - with the latest annuals. Year after year, I am struck by

all the pretty perennials at the nursery, and wind up purchasing far too many tulips, daffodils and hyacinths for someone who has nowhere for them to permanently reside. This year, I “scaled back” the floral collection; but still, as we speak, several tulip plants have already bloomed past their expiration and are in desperate need of a home for the offseason. What can I say? I’m a sucker for spring. I tend to have the same unhealthy obsession when it comes to indoor decor, as I have amassed quite the array of seasonal knick knacks, wreaths and doormats. As soon as the months transition, there I am, back up on the step stool, peering into the infamous “Christmas Closet” for signs of the many spring, summer and autumn accents I have accumulated over the last five years. Back in March, I realized that, with the exception of Easter decorations, I am seriously lacking in anything not resembling a bunny, chick or egg. Were my apartment able to hold one more thing, I’d say it was time

for a small spring shopping spree; but alas, it cannot. Well… maybe just one more thing. Speaking of decor, my little finned friend, Norton von Spudley - “Spud,” “Norty,” “Baby Betta Extraordinaire” - seems to be flourishing in his bowl on my desk at home, nestled under “his” desk lamp and next to a rather striking likeness of himself in the form of a blown glass ornament. Often, I find him staring intently at the little turquoise fish in the hand-painted ball, as if pleading with it to come out and play. Nearly 18 monthsold, my Norty seems to be enjoying his time as my companion, which he expresses daily by trying to devour my finger as I sprinkle crushed pellets into his bowl. Table manners are not a strong point. And that’s the way it stands in this second week of May, hovering on the brink of summer while shaking off the winter doldrums that have engrossed us for the last several months - the happy medium, if you will, of weather. Enjoy it while it lasts. This, too, shall pass.

Job Openings Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone today announced over 2,000 temporary jobs are available for the United States Golf Association’s (USGA) 2018 U.S. Open Golf Championship. Earlier today, the Suffolk County Department of Labor hosted a Job Fair at the Suffolk County OneStop Employment Center, located in Hauppauge, to recruit and fill positions in the food service and hospitality industry; event security; parking attendants and shuttle/ bus depot attendants; and operations. The Suffolk County Department of Labor has been actively supporting the recruiting efforts of multiple USGA vendors such as Purple Tie by Ridgewells, MTK Resources, Country Club Services, and Andy Frain Services, to bring temporary employment opportunities to our residents for the U.S. Open Golf Championship. “There are thousands of positions still open for our residents of all ages to take advantage of,” said Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone. “I encourage all those who are interested to apply and become part of one of the most exciting sporting events of the year, happening right here in our own backyard.” “Today’s job fair will help to spread the word about the temporary positions available for the U.S. Open and bolster our vendors recruiting efforts,” said 2018 U.S. Open Championship Director, Charlie Howe. “Suffolk County has

been a great partner and we appreciate the use of their resources as we look to provide fans with a first-class Championship experience.” Purple Tie by Ridgewells will manage the large scale catering operation at the U.S. Open. Misericordia University recently inducted six students into Psi Chi, the International Honor Society in Psychology, during an induction ceremony in Sandy and Marlene Insalaco Hall.

Founded in 1929, Psi Chi is one of the largest student psychological organization, featuring more than 750,000 members. With more than 1,000 chapters in the United States and Canada,

Psi Chi’s purpose is to “encourage, stimulate and maintain excellence in scholarship, and advance the science of psychology. Induction at Misericordia University is open to students who major or minor in psychology. Each student must successfully complete nine credit hours of study, maintain at least a 3.0 grade point average in those classes, and be in the top 35 percent of their class. Researcher Recognized Smithtown High School East student Cindy Li, a senior in the ThINK Science Research program, received an honorable mention in the American Society of Human Genetics International DNA essay competition. This year’s topic centered on the direct-to-consumer DNA testing. Students were asked to reflect on the merits of such mail-in

services where supportive counseling from healthcare professionals may be absent. According to Maria Zeitlin, Smithtown High School East science research coordinator, “Li wrote an insightful essay that explored the topic from a meaningful point of view. It is especially important in my program that students be literate in the discussion of scientific

topics that relate to the public at large.” ASHG received entries from students in 43 U.S. states, as well as from 23 countries. Essays are expected to be wellreasoned arguments indicative of a depth of understanding of the concepts related to the essay question.
