(NAPSI)—Recycling is one of the easiest ways the average person can help the environment. Not only does recycling prevent items from ending up in landfills, it reduces the amount of raw materials used to make new products. Here are some myths and facts about recycling commonly used food and beverage cartons: Myth: Cartons can’t be
recycled. Fact: Cartons are certainly recyclable. They can be turned into new products, such as paper towels, tissues and writing paper. They can also be turned into environmentally friendly building materials, in a process that uses no water or chemicals. Myth: If a package doesn’t have a recycling
logo on it, it’s not recyclable. Fact: What can and can’t be recycled varies by community and is primarily dependent on the recycling facility. Cartons can carry the standard “Please Recycle” logo under the Federal Trade Commission’s green guidelines. It’s best to contact your community or check its website to find
out what can and can’t be recycled. Myth: You have to put your recyclables in a plastic bag and then in your recycling bin. Fact: Plastic bags can jam up equipment at recycling centers, slowing everything down and potentially preventing recyclables from getting recycled. Instead, place materials loosely in

The Charity of the Month for May is: Bikers Against Child Abuse (BACA) www.BACAworld.org
Bikers Against Child Abuse is a 501(C)(3) non-profit organization. BACA formed with the intent to create a safer environment for abused children. They exist as a body of bikers to empower children not to feel afraid of the world in which they live. They stand ready to lend support to their wounded friends by involving them with an established, united organization.

BACA works in conjunction with local and state officials who are already in place to protect children. BACA receives calls on their helpline (631-408-8218), which is taken by the Chapter Child Liaison. This member contacts the family and an initial visit is organized to meet the guardian and child at their home or another location. Following this visit, two BACA members are assigned as “Primaries” to the child who remain available for contact 24/7/365. A ride is then organized for the members of the Chapter to meet the child. This is when a ceremony is performed to take the child into the BACA family, which is where the empowerment begins. BACA supports each child according to their individual needs. Some services available for the child and their family include a physical presence at the home (24/7 if needed), visiting the child at school, escorting the child to and from court, and they even maintain a therapy fund for children needing assistance.

If you are interested in becoming a BACA member you must meet certain requirements. Some of them are that you have regular access to a motorcycle, are 18 years or older, can pass an NCIC fingerprint check, can attend monthly meetings and Chapter events and that you have a desire to help abused children. If you meet the basic criteria, you can eventually become a “Cleared Supporter”, which is when you are assigned a Patched Member as your “Sponsor”. This member guides you through extensive training, which goes on for a minimum of at least one year before you can be considered eligible to become a full Patched Member. Eight students from Accompsett Middle School in the Smithtown Central School District were recently recognized for their exceptional foreign language skills. The Long Island Language Teachers held an original poetry contest and the seventh grade students in foreign language teacher Maria DiLiberto’s class took home the top prizes. For their original
poems in Italian, Thomas Natale placed first, Joseph Lamardo took second and Isabella Dantuono came in third in the contest. In the Spanish poetry contest, Abigail Jung placed first and Madhur Dyal was named the second-place winner. In a local essay contest sponsored by the Sons & Daughters of Italy in Smithtown, three Accompsett Middle School
students took top honors. The essays, which were written in English, were filled with details about a family member whose roots were in Italy. The three winners were Haley Sasbon (first place), Carlie Tockarshewsky (second place) and Isabella Spilotros (third place). They each received monetary prizes and will be honored at a ceremony on July 11.

ANNUAL SPRING BENEFIT - Winston Preparatory School held its spectacular 2019 Annual Spring Benefit, 500 Reasons Why, on Saturday, March 23rd with families, friends and professionals from all five campuses across the tri-state area at Cipriani 42nd Street in NYC. It was a festive evening for the guests who gathered to celebrate the over 500 students who call Winston Preparatory School home. “And they’re off!!!!” Racing six small wooden vehicles on the speciallyfitted track in each heat, 78 hand-crafted Pinewood Derby cars were in the competitions at the Annual Matinecock District (Boy Scouts of America)’s district-wide runoff event held in the gym of the William T Rogers Middle School in Kings Park on April 14, 2018. The cars had to be made by the boys (and parents could assist) in shaping and decorating the 5-ounce block of wood contained in the Pinewood Derby Car Kit. The 7- to 10-year-
olds who were taking part in the District-wide event had previously raced their cars in the individual Cub Scout Pack’s race. The top four winners from each of the Cub Scout Packs in the Matinecock District (which encompasses Western Smithtown and all of the Town of Huntington) were eligible to take part in this event. With friends, parents, and volunteer scouting adults from the Pack and the Scout District to cheer them on, matrix style races were held for the 78 Lions, Tigers, Cub Scouts, and Webelos Scouts and their
cars. The top ten winners received trophies, and each participant received a commemorative patch. The scouts and their families, representing 25 of the 33 Matinecock Cub Packs, had a fun day at this Matinecock District 2018 Pinewood Derby. Electronically scored, the pinewood derby cars raced from a variety of speeds of 202.07 mph to 218.34 mph and were timed at speeds of 3.359 seconds to a top speed of 3.115 seconds as they came to the finish line on the 40-foot long racing tracks.

Chocolate Molding & Dipping with The Chocolate Duck, located at 310 Main Street in Farmingdale
Who didn't love chocolate molding and dipping as a kid? Come to think of it, there seems to be a chocolate mold for just about any occassion. Playing with chocolate is a fun activity to do with kids, and makes for a fairly easy dessert spread for outdoor parties. The Chocolate Duck in Farmingdale offers an endless array of molds to suit your mood, or for a specific occasion. Need a theme? Think backyard BBQs, graduation parties, baby showers. Yes, you can make chocolate baby booties or graduation caps.

Young Gardeners Flourish With six different garden beds to prepare and care for, the student council members at Mt. Pleasant Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District don’t mind getting their hands a bit dirty. Starting in April, the students head outdoors to start preparing their garden, which they hope will be filled with plenty of vegetables by the end of the school year. They start by weeding and raking
the beds to get ready for a schoolwide planting day in May. The imitative started about four years ago, according to adviser and Mt. Pleasant Elementary teacher Stephen Jackowski. The six garden beds were donated by local Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops. The student council cares for the beds, planting beans, tomatoes, potatoes, lettuce, corn and other various vegetables. All of
the vegetables are then donated to the local food pantry in June and during the summer months. While the beds are cared for weekly by the student council, which consists of third, fourth and fifth grade students, the schoolwide planting initiate gives all the students an opportunity to help give back to their local community.

the movie where the frustrated writer is sitting at his computer, sighing and running his fingers through his hair as words fail to flow from his fingertips onto the screen. This effect was even more dramatic in the days where writers would stare blankly at typewriters, write a few shaby sentences, become disgusted and then ball up the mostly blank piece of paper and toss it into an already filled wastepaper basket. These character’s were supposedly suffering from writer’s block, and “gasp!” their very livelihoods were on the line. Unfortunately, for these fictional characters and for the thousands of you out there who want to write for personal expression, pleasure, or perhaps as a profession (not to mention all of the writing we all now have to do on social media), you have been misguided by the myth of writer’s block. Yes, writer’s block is a myth; a misnomer. Here’s why... most people believe that one sits down in front of a computer keyboard to write.
many others who write for a living know, is that no writing actually takes place at the computer (or with a pen and notebook for that matter). Writing is simply... thought married with emotion. If you’re having a thought and there is a strong emotion behind it, you are writing. This stands to reason, since you are the screenwriter, director and producer of your life. When you are walking through a museum exhibit, you are writing. When you are listening to a beautiful piece of music that moves you, you are writing. When you are sharing a hearty laugh with someone, you are writing. When you are attempting to work through heartbreak, disappointment, trauma, anger, frustration or even love... my friends, you are writing. Putting pen to paper or fingers to keyboard is not writing - that is the act of transcribing. By the time you sit down to “write,” it should already be written. In fact, I refuse to ever write my Living Well column in the actual column format. I insist on

Lastly, here is my biggest trade secret I have to share when it comes to writing; some of my most engaging written words were actually created by talking to myself, out loud. And let me tell you, some of my most profound realizations about myself and about life have come from this stream of consciousness self-talk. Some of it is gibberish, but inevitably, some pearls come out. Shocked as anyone else, I run over to the nearest computer or notepad and get them down before they evaporate into thin air. Inspired thought is like a rare and elusive butterfly. You’re so awed by their beauty and divinity and before you know it, they’ve flown away. Capturing those moments is the art of writing.

Mock Stock Competition Fifth graders in Jeffrey Faragasso’s class at Mt. Pleasant Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District are learning about the basics of finance, savings, investing and banking during their yearlong mock stock market competition. Each September, every student in the class receives a credit of $100,000 to purchase
five different stocks and build a portfolio. There’s no buying or selling throughout the year, so Mr. Faragasso urges his students to choose wisely. Every Friday during the school year, they discuss the progress of their stocks, take a look at their earnings and losses and predict what they think may happen to their stocks. The class also discusses
news and current events and ties those discussions into why certain stocks may be performing better than others. Outside of the classroom, there’s a leaderboard featuring the top-performing portfolios and the winner at the end of the school year receives a breakfast.

Day Of Remembrance Smithtown High School East and Smithtown High School West spent April 11 educating its sophomore classes on events of the Holocaust and Rwandan genocide. As part of its social studies curriculum, the schools have held a Holocaust Remembrance and Genocide Awareness Day for the past 18 years. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Rwandan genocide. During the full-day event, the 10th graders listened to a lecture by Rwandan
genocide survivor and former Parliament speaker Joseph Sebarenzi. A second guest lecture included a testimony from Holocaust survivor Werner Reich. The lectures help students connect on a more personal level and understand the importance of empathy and forgiveness despite these tragedies. “Werner Reich and Joseph Sebarenzi’s presentations were both very inspirational and gave you a feeling to be a better person and try to
keep peace for the future,” said Ashley Lockwood, Smithtown High School West student. “Also, to try and forgive others to stay healthy and get rid of anger and bitterness.” During breakout sessions, students worked in smaller groups for different activities. They spent two periods learning the background of what happened in Cambodia and Rwanda through a presentation and film clips and created an awareness poster.
