providing guide dogs and training to the blind, visually impaired or others with special needs, free of charge. The foundation’s kennel houses about 100 dogs and welcomes volunteers on a daily basis to exercise and socialize with the dogs. The SJES students asked questions

The Fort Salonga Civic Association (FSA) held its annual Spring Brunch at the Indian Hills Country Club and featured Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta and Smithtown Historian as guest speakers. Many Fort Salonga based businesses graciously provided raffle prizes and donations such as IGA Fort Salonga/East Northport Market, Fort

Salonga Wines, Grace Music School, Bob’s Canoe Rentals, and many more. Legislator Trotta gave a brief overview of some of the issues he has been working on to assist the residents of Fort Salonga and urged residents to contact him if they have any problems. As a retired Suffolk County Police Detective, he is concerned about the safety and welfare of the citizens, as

well as the traffic/roadway concerns of the residents. Brad Harris gave a historical perspective of Fort Salonga and addressed the upcoming events to celebrate the 350 Anniversary of the Town of Smithtown. He informed those attending that there will be a reenactment of the Battle of Fort Slongo on October 10th, which will be organized by the Fort Salonga Civic Association.

The American Heart Association’s 6th Annual Healing Heart 5K Run/ Walk will be held on Sunday, May 17th, on the property of the beautiful Pugliese Vineyards in the heart of the Long Island wine country in Cutchogue. More than 700 runners are expected. Day of event registration begins at 8:00 a.m., with the fun run for children 10 and under beginning at

In a crowded movie theatre, a packed-to-capacity train… sometimes, our desire for personal space wins out over common courtesy. I’m not proud of it, but, well, I’m not entirely ashamed of it either. Case in point: Just last week, my cousin and I ventured out to one of several opening night screenings of The Avengers, Marvel’s latest in a long line of comic-inspired blockbusters. Like most others in attendance, we arrived at the theatre a full 45 minutes before show time in order to avoid sitting in the front row, straining to

see the top of the screen. After scoring two relatively centered seats in the last row, I strategically placed my jacket and pocketbook on the neighboring chair. Fortyfive minutes elapsed. The theatre filled in quickly, but there were still plenty of other options aside from the one single seat I had “saved.” About 20 minutes into the previews, there it was – two stragglers wandered in, loudly discussing where to sit, with one pointing out several suitable options as the other continued to climb up to the last row, our row. “Is that seat taken?” the one, more irritating individual bellowed, while literally standing in front of

me, I might add. I glanced at my jacket and pocketbook, briefly considered moving it aside, then decided against it. “No, sorry, someone is coming,” I replied blandly. Even later than you, if that’s possible, I mentally added. He looked at me doubtfully, then did an about face and headed back to another seat further down the aisle. I glanced at my cousin and whispered, “So much for that theory – now he’s going to see no one’s coming. Whoops. Perhaps if he didn’t arrive after the opening credits…” And with that, I settled back into my seat with my popcorn, my personal space preserved. Obnoxious? Sure. Worth it? You bet.

New Start Time For Air Show For the first time, the Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach, one of New York State’s largest public events, will take place starting at 12 noon and run until 5 p.m. – a new time for the show, which traditionally ran from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Fans are encouraged to arrive early for the best parking opportunities. The Bethpage Air show at Jones Beach takes place on Memorial Day Weekend,

Kidney Stones: Get Relief from the Pain and Discomfort

Fifteen percent of Americans will experience the pain of kidney stones at some point in their lives, but there are treatments available that can reduce or eliminate suffering. Jennifer Hill, MD, a urologist at the Arthur Smith Institute for Urology, part of North Shore-LIJ Health System, discusses what you need to know about this condition. Kidney stone disease is not only one of the most common afflictions of modern times, but kidney stones also tend to recur, meaning they develop again after you’ve been treated. If you have formed stones before, a recurrent bout of stone pain is usually easily recognized. The symptoms of kidney stone pain, or renal colic, are: • Severe back pain that is sudden • Nausea and vomiting • The inability to get into a comfortable position • Abdominal pain that wraps around the flank (the side of your body between the ribs and the hip) to the front of the abdomen • Urinary frequency and urgency without much urine passage • Labial, vaginal, penile or testicular pain that is not made worse by touching the area Passing a kidney stone can be painful and time-consuming, but treatment options are available, including: • Medical expulsive therapy — medicine, usually given by an ER physician or urologist, to allow quicker passage of stones • Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy, or ESWL — a non-invasive treatment for stones using shock waves • Ureteroscopy and laser lithotripsy — a small scope is inserted into the bladder and passed into the ureter to locate and remove stones • Percutaneous nephrolithotomy, or PCNL — endoscopic removal of large stones through a small incision in the back

There are several types of stones, and each has a different cause and treatment. • Calcium oxalate — the most common kind of kidney stone • Uric acid — stones related to low urine output and a diet high in red meat and other kinds of animal protein • Struvite — stones usually associated with urinary tract infection • Cysteine stones — very hard stones, difficult to treat and control • Very rare stones — including xanthine, matrix, drug-induced stones, silica and triamterene When dealing with recurrent kidney stones, prevention is key. If you’ve suffered from stones in the past, the following can help prevent their recurrence: • Drink three liters of water a day in order to keep your urine diluted • Follow a low-sodium diet • Increase citrus foods in your diet — citrus helps prevent stones from forming There are many other ways to prevent stone formation. It is important to partner with a urologist to help you in your battle with kidney stones.

at a time when many school breakfast and lunch programs are not available to children in need. Laureate Lesson Physics students from Smithtown High Schools East and West recently enjoyed a lecture by Nobel Laureate Dr. David Gross at the Simons Center at Stony Brook University. Dr. Gross’s lecture, “My Life in Physics: From Quarks To Strings,” gave students an overview of how particle physics – the physics of what goes on inside protons and neutrons – began.

League Baseball have sponsored the Pitch, Hit and Run Competition which has allowed youth across the nation to participate in a free baseball skills competition. Children, ages 7-14 may compete, with boys and girls competing in different divisions, across four age groups. A winner in each age group will be selected for each skill contest and then an overall winner from each age group will be chosen. These winners will advance to the sectional competition to be held in the latter part of May. From there, the all around champions from the sectional competition will become eligible to advance to the Team Championships to be held in June at all 30 MLB markets. The competition

concludes with the National Championships, where the top competitors will compete during the 2015 MLB All-Star Week. The winners of the competition will be honored prior to the 86th MLB All-Star Game, which will be played at The Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati, Ohio. “I am sincerely grateful to Gerry Hustick and all the members of the Nesconset Athletics Association who came out to help with this year’s event,” said Legislator Kennedy. “Additional thanks goes to all our volunteers, the children and families who attended the competition” Finally Legislator thanked the Town of Smithtown for making Browns Road ball fields available.

This year, 54 public and private schools submitted students’ artwork for jurying. Three hundred and eleven student entries were received and Heckscher Museum Curator Lisa Chalif selected 80 for

display in the galleries. An artist’s statement accompanied each artwork on view, explaining the student’s thought process and artistic journey from conception to completion. A thumbnail image of the artwork on view in the Museum that inspired the student work also was featured.
