Pre-College Programs In the summer of 2016 the Art League of Long Island is launching PreCollege Programs for students interested in learning what it takes to become and Architect or Fashion Designer. Taught by established and practicing Architects and Fashion Designers, teens ages 13 to 18 will gain deeper knowledge of these design professions through hands-on contact

in their chosen medium, improve their creative design skills, and learn about the industry as a whole. Art League of Long Island Executive Director Charlee Miller knows well that Long Island’s economy depends on the next generation of professionals and business owners to sustain and grow the economy. As a financial services

executive for 37 years prior to joining the Art League, Miller has encountered families working hard to achieve and sustain the American Dream. Having seen many young people leave Long Island for jobs, careers and housing elsewhere, it is important now to provide early PreCollege education that will inspire and stimulate growth in the sciences, technology, engineering

and math (STEM) that are crucial to the future economy of Long Island. However, without the creativity and innovation inherent (and a largely forgotten virtue) in these fields, many professionals cannot reach their highest levels of performance. The Art League aims to put the STEAM in these programs by developing and encouraging Artistic skill.

With Art Education Program Director Elizabeth Kisseleff’s arrival at the Art League from Pratt Institute in early 2015, under her direction the Architecture and Fashion Programs were fully designed and developed to serve the needs of the Long Island Community. With her extensive experience in Pre-College programs Kisseleff understood

the need for not only a high quality program in Architecture and Fashion, but the added need for proximity and affordability for Long Island residents. On Long Island there are no summer architectural programs for high school students and few options for fashion students. The Art League’s programs offer certificates of completion for students

Smithtown West Senior Kathryn “Katie” Wood signed a National Letter of Intent last week to play volleyball at LaSalle University in Pennsylvania. At LaSalle, Katie will join the Division I Explorers, who compete in the Atlantic 10 Conference against teams from University of Dayton, George Washington University and the University of Rhode Island and other well-known universities. LaSalle University volleyball coach Caitlin Rimgaila stated that, “Katie

Smithtown West as the single season assist record with 683 assists and the career assist leader with 1717. A two year captain of the Smithtown West Varsity Girls Volleyball team, Katie was an integral member of the team as they competed in the playoffs. Among Katie’s honors she was named to the All Tournament team three times, All Classification twice and All County once during her prolific volleyball career. In addition to her being a member of the West Girls Volleyball team, Katie also represented the Garden Empire Volleyball Association (GEVA) region at the USA Volleyball National Prospect Camp this past December. Katie was a captain for the GEVA HP team that competed in the International Invitational Volleyball Tournament while holding down the setter position for the team. While at LaSalle, Katie plans to major in either business or physical therapy. Katie is the daughter Dave and Cindy Wood of Smithtown.

Hauppauge Middle School is pleased to announce that its Science Olympiad Team ranked in the top five percent of the teams that recently participated in the New York State Science Olympiad competition, which was held in East Syracuse, New York. The competition judged pairs of students who participated in 25 different events spanning all of the S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) disciplines. Some of the Hauppauge Team’s highest achievements were in the Fossils, Invasive Species, Rube Goldberg and Air Trajectory events. The following students are the highest ranking

their coaches – who also received the Outstanding Coach Award – “the students were very excited to have the opportunity to participate in New York State Science Olympiad competition.” They worked extremely hard over the past few months to prepare themselves to do well in the competition.” “Congratulations to all of our Science Olympiad Team participants,” stated Robert Wankmuller, Hauppauge School District’s director of Science, Technology and Research. “We are very proud of their achievements and know that each student did their very best to represent themselves and the Hauppauge community.”

Community Helpers distribute cardboard “Rice Bowls” to the student body, offering them a wonderful opportunity to practice their Christian Lenten responsibility of giving alms to those in need. Students collect spare

change from parents and family and give of their own allowance or earnings. The money collected is sent to Catholic Relief Services, where funding is used to feed, clothe and shelter those in need around the world. SSCM students give big every year, of their own, and there’s no doubt about it, their giving changes lives throughout the world. If a student donates $1 a day during the 40 days of Lent, that $40 will provide one month of food for a family, two years worth of seeds for a farmer and three months of clean water for four families. As we come to the end of the Easter season, perhaps the generosity of children is a good reminder that Lent is not the only time when giving means the world to those in need.

In addition to the two Design Programs, the Pre-College program also offers the Art League’s well-established Portfolio Development running in two three-week sessions starting July 11th and August 1st respectively. A public exhibit featuring works by students in the Pre-College programs will take place in the League’s Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery August 13th to August 21st. Scholarships have been made possible by small business and corporate partnerships, private donations and Art League supporters. Scholarships will be awarded based on financial need or merit. The deadline to submit the scholarship application is May 16th. The Art League of Long Island is a not-for-profit visual arts organization providing a full schedule of classes, workshops, exhibits, and events for Long Islanders since 1955. Educators from Singapore visited the Smithtown Central School District on April 19th to learn how the district is planting the seeds of Universal Design for Learning and how it is implementing UDL principles within instruction at a variety of grade levels. The visitors met with Smithtown Central School District’s special education/

UDL instructional coach Elizabeth Stein to better understand how they are embedding UDL in the district. They began their tour at Accompsett Middle School and then traveled to Smithtown High School West to see differentiated instruction through UDL in a 10th-grade social studies classroom. The group finished at Accompsett Elementary School with a visit to a fifth-grade special

class setting followed by a fifth-grade co-teaching classroom. Universal Design for Learning is a set of principles for curriculum development that give all individuals equal opportunities to learn. It provides a blueprint for creating instructional goals, methods, materials and assessments that can be customized and adjusted for individual needs.

Smithtown Central School District’s two high schools – Smithtown High School West and Smithtown High School East – both ranked in the top 100 in New York State on U.S. News & World Report’s rankings of the best public high schools in the nation. Smithtown High School West is listed at No. 76

Commack High School senior, David Li, was named as a semifinalist in the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program. Inclusion in this program is one of the highest honors bestowed upon graduation high school seniors. Scholars are selected on the basis of superior academic and artistic achievements, leadership qualities, strong character, and involvement in community and school activities. David is one of

689 semifinalists, chosen from 4,700 candidates nationwide. The U.S. Department of Education will announce the finalists in May, 2016, who will be invited to Washington, D.C. David has received many accolades for his scientific accomplishments, and recently won first place in the Junior Science and Humanities Symposium Regional Finals. He was a finalist at Intel’s International Science

in Brooklyn, visited the school on April 21st after making a connection with Smithtown High School East art teacher Tim Needles. Burgerman created two murals using his famous doodles, incorporating imagery from the community such as a Smithtown bull, and students worked together

to paint the color based on his design. Funding for the mural was provided by a grant from Smithtown Children’s Foundation, student fundraising and School Improvement Team. The two completed murals will hang outside the High School East’s cafeteria.

Rosemarie Kupencow – “Rosie,” as I always affectionately called her – was the very first friend I made when I started working here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers, just about 11 years ago. The resident proofreader, she introduced herself to me right away, and made sure I felt welcome in this new, unfamiliar setting, showing me the ins and outs of the newspaper she had come to call home for close to a decade at that point. In addition to being hired as an editorial assistant, I was brought on to help Rose, my new friend, with some of the weekly proofreading duties. her flooded street, despite her repeated warnings that it probably wasn’t going to end well. She never did let me live that one down, deservedly so. But that was Rose, always dispensing advice – some solicited, some not so much – and serving as the unofficial “work mother” to many of the younger employees. In that capacity, a coworker and I took her along as a “chaperone” of sorts on my very first trip to Adventureland not so many years ago. As we made our way from one ride to another, taking care not to miss any, the air was filled with the sounds of screaming – not ours, but of our beloved Rosie, yelling, “Get me OFF this thing!!!” and “Why did I let you two talk me into this???” I don’t think I have ever laughed so hysterically in my life. Needless to say, that was our first and last trip to any amusement park. But the memories, well, those last a lifetime. (As does the framed photo of the three of us plummeting over “Adventure Falls” at the moment of impact, a priceless reminder of all the fun that was had that day.) Just last week, Rose lost her battle with cancer, leaving a giant void here at South Bay – and in my heart. Her selfless determination to continue on over the past year was a perfect example of the type of person she was, always putting others first while forging ahead. What an incredible person, one that is dearly missed by so many. I’ll miss her sitting in the “friend” chair on the other side of my desk, coming to chat about life and work and family and friends and everything in between.

I’ll miss our goodnatured teasing back and forth... her imitations of my ballet positions... her self-deprecating analysis of her “fashion” sense – “don’t have a hair clip, use a paper clip!”... our phone conversations – in spite of her staunch refusal to ever get a cell phone, and her insistence on keeping important phone numbers on a crumbled piece of paper in her pocketbook… just seeing her smiling face every day at the office. But mostly, I’ll miss my special friend. This past December, in celebration of her birthday, Rose and I went out to dinner. She may not have been feeling like her old self, but it was truly like old times. For over three hours, we sat and talked, just the two of us, reminiscing about the highlights and lowlights of our decade working together, chatting about the latest happenings in our lives… and we laughed, hysterically, about many of the same stories recounted here – and countless others, some not suitable for publication in a family newspaper! We could have continued talking for three more hours, easily; it seemed that neither of us wanted that night, that moment, to end. I will always treasure it. How lucky I was to have her in my life – there to guide the way as I began this new chapter all those years ago… and there to see me through the journey every step of the way since. Rose, you will never be forgotten – not by me, and not by those who had the wonderful pleasure of knowing you, of loving you, of having you touch their lives. May you be at peace now.

Through the Distance Learning Program at Saints Cyril and Methodius School in Deer Park, educators have the ability to leverage learning from around the globe, bringing down the walls of the classroom and exposing students to a diverse array of educational opportunities. One such activity was SSCM’s participation in a series of Video Conferences with the Milwaukee Public Museum, during which students learned all about

“The Christmas Tree Ship” in their “Art of Storytelling” Series. Guided instruction from experts in a dynamic digital setting keeps kids engaged and entertained while learning lots and allows teachers to then return to the classroom with hands-on activities that bolster that learning. Each year, in line with this program, the Milwaukee Public Museum offers schools the opportunity to share projects created by students who have

participated in their Video Conferences. SSCM’s Fifth Grade teacher, Mrs. Nicole Congro tasked students with thinking through what they’d absorbed during the session and transform the story into a 4-panel story board of their own creation. The students’ designs were wide and varied and showed how much they’d taken away from their faraway instructors in order to showcase their creativity and round out this virtual activity to make it a more authentic hands-on learning experience. Students from all across the country submit projects for consideration to the museum as part of this program, so the news was extra exciting that for the second year in a row, a number of projects from SSCM students have been selected and are on display in the museum’s Student Art Exhibit nearly 1,000 miles away! Congratulations to all the students who participated and especially to those whose projects made it onto the museum wall!

Vets Go High Tech A new computer lab for formerly homeless Veterans was recently opened at the John J. Lynch Veterans Place Shelter in Yaphank, thanks to the generosity of the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) of Suffolk. The computers will be used to help Veterans residing at the shelter to search for and secure employment. “This opens up a whole new world for our Veterans at the John J. Lynch Shelter,” commented Wilkens Young, Director of Suffolk County United Veterans, which runs the shelter. “They can now enroll in online vocational and educational training

programs, search for employment, prepare resumes, and submit job applications. We are grateful to RSVP Suffolk for this very generous and much-needed donation.” RSVP Suffolk, an allvolunteer organization, refurbishes donated computers and provides them at no-cost to community groups – with a special focus on Veterans organizations – that could not otherwise afford them through their ‘Computer Connections Program.’” SCUV operates the computer lab – equipped by RSVP with five computer workstations, a printer, and a copier – seven days a

week from 9 a.m. through 9 p.m. RSVP will also be providing training to help Veterans improve their computer skills. Suffolk County United Veterans is a project of the not-for-profit Association for Mental Health and Wellness, a behavioral healthcare organization headquartered in Ronkonkoma. SCUV provides emergency housing for some 200 Veterans annually as well as support services for more than 1,300 veterans and their families each year.
