Denny Sanford, one of the country’s most celebrated philanthropists and innovative entrepreneurs will be the featured keynote speaker at LIU Post’s commencement ceremony on May 5th, on the Great Lawn. Ceremonies for bachelor’s degree candidates will begin at 10 a.m., the doctoral, master’s and dual degree candidates will 9.875 x 5.437
receive their degrees at 3 p.m. The graduates celebrated in this ceremony, from LIU’s Post, Brentwood and Riverhead campuses, will include 904 undergraduates, 1095 masters candidates, 174 receiving advanced certificates, 43 doctoral candidates and 56 students receiving dual bachelormaster degrees.

Three art students from Smithtown High School West in the Smithtown Central School District were accepted into Heckscher Museum’s annual Long Island’s Best High School Juried Art Exhibition. Nyssa Burton, Katelyn
Kguloian and Laura Minet are all students in Steve Halem’s Advanced Placement Studio Art class. Additionally, Kguloian was awarded the Renzo S. Bianchi Scholarship. The number of entries to this year’s competition was a record setting
387 student works of art submitted from 53 high schools in Suffolk and Nassau counties. The jurors narrowed the field to 84 works of art representing 44 schools. The exhibition was on view through April 9th.

We all have our routines. Me, I find particular solace in the schedules of daily life more so than most. My mornings, especially, tend to dictate the tone of the afternoon and evening. This is both good and bad, of course. A missed wake-up alarm, a favorite pair of jeans in the laundry, no more milk in the fridge… all can lead to being thrown off track and sent on your way in a state of disarray. Whereas, when things run like clockwork, the feeling tends to be more of the notion that nothing can stand in the way of productivity. Who knew the snooze button could hold so much power? In lieu of last week’s column
ruminating on the power of the almighty calendar and its tendency to dictate our schedules to the point that we no longer can differentiate those things we truly enjoy doing from those that are pure obligation, I received several kind letters from readers expressing their complete agreement that their lives, too, have been taken over by those tiny square boxes. One woman even went so far as to recommend a book, “Quiet Mind,” which suggests that we would all be better served by taking a moment to sit back and relax, to find an hour of peace in which to clear our minds of the clutter that accumulates over the course of day after day spent running from one task to the next. The idea is to eventually, over time, expand upon this hour and have its influence extend throughout the entire day. How nice that would be.

It all begins with one moment, whether it is rising early to see the sun come up over the Great South Bay, or taking the extra time to prepare a homemade breakfast during the rush of the week, or even driving the scenic route to work. Little things add up to big things, and big things become a way of living, day by day. There is ample benefit to be found in making that effort. It is not a perfect process, to be sure. There will still be those days when the snooze button seems the most viable option, when skipping breakfast and running out the door to sit in traffic is how you are destined to spend your morning. But that doesn’t have to dictate the tone of the entire day. Pop a CD in, turn up the volume, sit back and enjoy the ride. There are miles to go before you sleep.

Salute to Excellence
Eighth-grade students at Accompsett Middle School in the Smithtown Central School District are taking the opportunity to educate their classmates about the dangers of drugs and alcohol and the importance of positive decision-making. The I’m Somebody program reinforces positive decision-making and the risks of drug and
alcohol abuse as well as social media and our youth. Prevention specialist Gail Feldman from the Suffolk County Division of Mental Hygiene, Alcohol and Substance Abuse Services trained 12 select eighth-grade students at Accompsett Middle School about the importance of standing up for yourself and what you feel is right, withstanding peer
pressure, the role of values in our lives as well as positive decision-making. Accompsett Middle School counselors then continued this training with these students and helped to create a 40-minute lesson where the eighth-graders presented to sixth-grade English classes during April and May.

Island Harvest Food Bank is teaming up with the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) and the United States Postal Service (USPS) for the 25th annual Stamp Out Hunger campaign on Saturday, May 13th. As the nation’s largest single-day food drive, postal carriers across the country will collect nonperishable food items donated by generous homeowners. On Long Island, all food collected will help Island Harvest Food Bank to provide supplemental food support to the more than 316,000 Long Islanders who are at risk of hunger and food insecurity. Participating in Stamp Out Hunger is easy. Simply leave nonperishable food items, such as canned goods, cereal, pasta, rice, boxed juices and shelfstable milk (please, no glass items), next to your mailbox before your regularly scheduled mail delivery on Saturday, May 13th. Your USPS letter carrier will do the rest. In 2014, the Centers for Disease Control reported that one in every 68 children in the United States is diagnosed on the autism spectrum. Boys are four times more likely than
girls to have autism. Even though there are many people with autism, each person is different in terms of his or her challenges, abilities and personality. “Forest Brook students learned that they can help make a difference in the lives of others by participating in the ‘Kids and Coins for Autism’ initiative,” stated Principal Kristen Reingold.
SPECIAL SPEAKER - On Tuesday, April 25th, Congressman Lee Zeldin spoke to a group of second through fifth grade students at the Smithtown Christian School, in Smithtown. During the visit, Congressman Zeldin discussed his work in Congress and the legislative process, and was able to answer many questions from the students.

Grand Tour Students from Branch Brook Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District were welcomed with open arms by their new principals, teachers and future classmates at Mt. Pleasant and Tackan elementary schools during their visits on April 21st. In an effort to ease the transition to their new schools next year, students from Branch Brook visited the school they will attend next year when Branch Brook closes its doors. Branch Brook Principal
Ireen Westrack was on hand for both building tours. At Mt. Pleasant Elementary School, Principal Joseph Ierano shared a slideshow presentation of all the fun-filled annual events that happen at the school, giving them a sneak peek of what they can look forward to when they start in September. Mt. Pleasant’s fifth-grade helpers offered tours of the building and Branch Brook students spent some classroom time in their respective grade
levels. At Tackan Elementary School, Principal Dr. Allyn Leeds welcomed the new students for a tour of the building and spent time visiting each classroom. After the tours, students gathered back in the gymnasium for a question and answer session and received a Tackan T-shirt. A parent meeting was held on April 24th in each building to provide an opportunity to meet the staff, tour the building and answer questions.

Big Finish The Hauppauge Middle School Science Olympiad Team competed against 39 other New York State Regional Champions at the 2017 New York State Science Olympiad Competition, which was held April 7th-8th, in East Syracuse, New York. “The 15 seventh and eighth grade students collaborated tirelessly as a team to excel in their technology and science events,” stated Coaches Maryann Mullen and Sheilah Schumann. “Along with Science and Technology Department Chairman Rob Wankmuller and Middle School Principal Maryann Fletcher, we could not be more proud of the team’s impressive performance in

Exploring Aviation D. Miller Institute Scholarship Award. The scholarship will entitle her to attend the National Science Olympiad Summer Institute at the Pointe Hilton Tapatio Cliffs Resort in Phoenix, Arizona. The Science Olympiad Summer Institute (SOSI) is an intensive five-day program that provides the most current information about all 46 Science Olympiad events and is a unique STEM experience. Mullen commented that she “is looking forward to implementing what she learns at the SOSI to help Hauppauge Middle School’s Science Olympiad Team become even more successful in 2018.”
Hauppauge Middle School 6th graders recently enjoyed a class field trip to the Cradle of Aviation Museum. The students had an opportunity to travel through time learning about more than 75 air and spacecraft, ranging from hot air balloons and kites to jet aircraft and an actual lunar module at the eight Cradle of Aviation Museum
galleries. The 6th graders were awed by the “Solar System Tour.” This immersive planetarium and fulldome theater offers one of the largest and most powerful virtual reality experiences in the world. The students learned all about the different objects that populate the solar system with a sampling of
rocky planets, gas giants, asteroids, comets and meteors. In addition, the students had an opportunity to take a spin on the legendary, 100-year-old Nunley’s Carousel, which has been fully restored to its historic glory at the Cradle of Aviation Museum Row.

WELLINGTON, Fla. (CBS12) — Grief counselors are at Emerald Cove Middle School on Monday to help students cope with the loss of a fellow student, according to district leaders.

Hundreds of students and friends showed up at a candlelight vigil at the Wellington Edge clubhouse. Mourners marched to the canal where the crash happened.
