Scholarships Awarded Teachers Federal Credit Union (TFCU), one of the country’s largest credit unions, awarded two $5,000 Nicholas Maletta Memorial Scholarships to SUNY Old Westbury students Jack Benjamin and Magdalena Zielinska. The educational scholarship reflects TFCU’s ongoing efforts to provide support and encouragement to local students within the

communities it serves. Magdalena Zielinska, a junior, is an accounting major. She is a graduate of Lindenhurst High School and lives in Lindenhurst. TFCU also awarded the Nicholas Maletta Memorial Scholarship to Magdalena in 2016 when she was a sophomore at SUNY Old Westbury. Jack Benjamin, a junior, is also majoring

in accounting. He is a graduate of Upper Room Christian School in Dix Hills and lives in Deer Park. Nicholas Maletta, for whom this scholarship is named, began serving on TFCU’s Board of Directors in 1983. In 1991 he was elected Vice Chairman, a position he held until his passing in 2012. In recognition of

his 29 years of selfless volunteer work, the $5,000 Nicholas Maletta Memorial Scholarship Award was established for students who have graduated from a Long Island high school and who are enrolled in SUNY Old Westbury’s School of Business. “The recipients of the two TFCU Nicholas Maletta Memorial Scholarship awards are on the road to

This is held the day before the Belmont Stakes and is a wonderful outing, offering lunch, a premium open bar and door prizes. 13 Triskaidekaphobia: fear of the number 13 I’ve known many people with an aversion to this perceived “unlucky” number, whether serving as a date of particular significance or - the more common superstition - when it should happen to fall on a Friday, of all days. Personally, I’ve taken special care to note any particularly negative occurrences on these infrequent juxtapositions of day and date, with thankfully few to report. Just another day, as they say. And with that, today - May 2nd - I commemorate the 13th anniversary of my start date here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers. Over one dozen years ago, I began my journey into the world of journalism, straight from college. At the time, thirteen years would have certainly seemed like an eternity to spend in any one establishment. Think about

it - even school, which often seems like an infinite chunk of time, is divided into segments of elementary, junior high and senior high. College, if it follows, is usually segmented into four-year intervals. Thirteen years… well that’s an entirely different level of commitment, is it not? And yet, even in the workforce, time tends to separate into stages. It begins with the formative years of finding your footing in a particular field, still unsure of what the job entails and what your responsibilities will include. Everything is new and exciting as you realize - hey, I’m really doing this! These are followed by the years of transition, when positions may be altered, new projects will come and go, and you begin to discover your particular strengths and weaknesses en route to finding your true passion. Thirteen years in, and I

am still in the process of realizing those aspects of the vast field of journalism which really inspire me. I am open to learn, eager to explore and always looking to improve upon those skills I originally honed all those decades ago. I believe this process is never complete; those who have worked in a particular field for twice as long as I have can surely attest to this fact. Who’s to say that anyone has to stay with one particular venture for a lifetime anyway? The world is constantly evolving, as are we; and the nature of most careers tends to necessitate a versatility that didn’t always exist prior. We all have untapped skills to be utilized, curiosities to indulge and talents to cultivate. So, here’s to 13, a number like any other, if you ask me. May it signify all the experience gained thus far, and the adventures yet to unfold.

It all started with a good book... As I sat down with Lisa Gatti, CEO & Founder of Pal-O-Mine Equestrian, Inc., I had the privilege to learn about what her organization does to help those in need, as well as how it all began. PalO-Mine Equestrian is a comprehensive therapeutic equine program that uses horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for individuals with disabilities and for other vulnerable populations. Lisa’s mother was a special education teacher and her father worked for a book publishing company. She was greatly influenced by both of their professions. Lisa grew up knowing she loved horses, but she really wanted to become a teacher and work with children in need. Her father would often send her books while she was away at college, and one day she received a book titled Palomino, by Danielle Steel. As she read through the pages, she became inspired by what was written about: a ranch that was formed to help people through equine therapy. From that point on, she was certain that was exactly what she wanted to do with her life. Through persistence, hard work and a passion to serve others, Lisa Gatti opened Pal-O-Mine in 1995 as a 501(C)(3) non-profit. Pal-O-Mine grew from having two programs, eight horses and 80 students per week to 11 programs, 25 horses and 400 students per week - and they continue to grow today! This organization sits on eight acres, with a 20-stall barn, handicapped accessible bathrooms, a new 100’ x 120’ indoor arena with state-ofthe-art footing and a rider hoisting system, and three outdoor riding arenas. They help an unbelievable amount of people, and their work is truly heartwarming. Individuals of all ages are welcome to take part in the programs they offer. They operate with five full-time employees, 35 independent contractors and 80 volunteers a week. Their riding instructors have experience with the following diagnoses: Autism Spectrum Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Sensory Processing Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Neurological Disorders, Cerebral Palsy,

Orlando from 94.3 The Shark showed his support for AHRC Suffolk by splashing into spring as well as Finn the SCCC Sharks Spirit Team mascot! Over one hundred people from local schools and communities gathered to help raise money and awareness for AHRC Suffolk's Mission. Many Splashers meandered around the beach before the actual splash listening to music and enjoying the new playground at the Marina! Moving Forward By way of background, the study and application of Zen is perhaps the most challenging to write about. Although numerous books and articles abound, there are many folks out there who know nothing about the subject. It is this group who is my main focus in exploring the power of Zen. Further, this article adds on to my second column (written a few weeks ago), The Art and Pleasure of Meditation. Let’s begin with a definition of Zen. Simply put, it is a different way of looking at life. It is not a religion, nor any type of cult. However, through the study of Zen over the years, many people have found that it brings a deeper sense of fulfillment, a greater understanding of yourself and others, and could be a turning point in your life. It’s important to note that I am not a Zen Master – merely someone who started my training while I was serving with the military in the Far East, and my studies have continued to this day. By delving deeper into Zen through reading, and continuing practical usage, the real meaning and application will come to you...but one must be patient.

Examples of Zen are everywhere: in flower arranging, creating a Zen garden; meditating; achieving a goal that you worked hard for; watching a glorious sunset...any activity where your body, mind and the environment blend together in unison. To reinforce the Zen concept, I would suggest that you find a basic book on the practice of Zen. There, you will find a series of guiding principles that will aid you on your journey to enlightenment. At this point, some personal examples of Zen might be helpful... Weather permitting, late in the afternoon, I watch the sunset from my deck following a short meditation period. Studying the wooded landscape, I notice the wonders of nature abound; thirsty birds drinking from my bird bath, several squirrels skillfully jumping from tree to tree, sounds of birds calling to one another and the beauty of observing new buds forming on many plants in my Zen garden. After a while, I begin to feel an inward sense of peace. A while ago, I needed to put down slates in my lawn on the side of my house, from the front to the back, a distance of

The Power of Zen approximately 30 feet. Once I purchased the slates, I began to think how they should be placed. After a while, I remembered a Zen principle on life - that the journey through life is never smooth, with many twists and turns. Following that principle, I placed each slate in an uneven pattern, which gave me a nice sense of satisfaction. To help you get started, I would suggest finding a quiet place where you will not be disturbed. If possible, start with a short meditation {refer back to my second column on the subject}, then ponder the following questions: Who am I? Am I living my life to the fullest? What are my important goals in life, and how many have I achieved? How can I become a better person? What gives me the most satisfaction? While my work life pays the bills, how much time have I spent with family and friends? Do I still have time to “smell the roses”? The next step would be to self-examine those factors which might get in the way of achieving the goals listed in the above paragraph. For example, let’s take the first one listed above – Who am I? This takes into

account a broad spectrum, which can spill over to many of the others listed above. My personal example is as follows: Once a year (usually around late September), I drive out to the eastern end of Long Island where the beaches have already been vacated by the summer tourists. I jog for about one mile (on the hard sand), then rest on a sand dune. At that point, I ponder three questions: (1) Where am I now - in my life, my personal goals, my marriage, my job and my comfort zone? (2) Where do I want to be in three, six and 12 months from now? (3) What is my plan to get there? Space limitations in this column prevent me from going into further detail, but it should give you enough “food for thought” to start your journey. The practice of Zen and its road to self-fulfillment takes much practice and dedication. It is a process of discovering your inner self and, in doing so, achieving a more meaningful life. Like the journey through life, expect twists and turns, achievements and disapointments, but always stay on the path. Why not start moving forward now? Peace

The buses “plug in” overnight and have a potential range up to 125 miles per charge. “The first thing you notice is that it has no tailpipe. It is literally the cleanest school bus in the U.S., yet has just as much power as a gas or diesel powered vehicle,” said Phil Horlock, President of Blue Bird Corporation, who discussed the bus at the event. “Mechanically, the bus is amazingly simple and as a result, is much easier and less costly to maintain. Of course, it offers huge savings on fuel costs.” “We encourage and welcome the commitment of Blue Bird, which is taking the lead in producing buses that run on alternative sources of energy,” said Corrado who said he expects that an all-electric bus will begin operating on a regular school district route in Suffolk County sometime this year. Suffolk Transportation Service operates over 1,400

vehicles, mainly diesel buses and gasoline vans, serving 18 school districts. The event was hosted by the Islip Town School Board Association, compromised of board of education members from districts throughout the Town of Islip. “We’re very excited to be at a point at which this cutting edge bus is ready to go into service. This can be a win-win for both the taxpayers and the environment,” said Sue Schnebel, Superintendent of Islip School District. Another attendee was Fred Koelbel, Director of Facilities and Transportation for Port Jefferson School District. “What a message students receive when they ride on a bus like this. There are messages about sustainability, green energy, and messages about the future. This becomes something they are exposed to every day on their way to and from school,” he said. While electric buses are more costly, members of the Islip Town School Board Association learned about grants and funding approaches that may be available which can dramatically bring down the initial $350,000 price tag.

More than 50 school district leaders got their first look at what many say is the future of pupil transportation – the first U.S. made all-electric, zero-emissions school bus. Currently on an inaugural cross-country tour, this battery-powered prototype bus made a stop in Bay Shore, Long Island, where school board members, superintendents and transportation officials participated in a two-hour introduction and test ride of the bus. The event was hosted by Suffolk Transportation Service, Suffolk County’s largest pupil transportation provider. The bus was built by Blue Bird Corporation, one of three main school bus makers in the U.S., and its batteries and drivetrain were developed by Adomani Electric. “Electric and hybrid buses will have a big role in the future of pupil transportation on Long Island. Our school districts already know this and have been asking us when an electric bus will be available,” said John Corrado, President and CEO of Suffolk Transportation Service. “In the last several years, we began to develop our own hybrid vehicle and also encouraged Blue Bird, one

A Royal Gathering It was a royal gathering for second-graders at Tackan Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District when they celebrated their Fairy Tale Ball on April 20th. The celebration was the culmination of their literacy unit on fairy tales. Royal kings and queens,

princes and princesses and many of the famous characters from the classic tales entered the gymnasium to an audience of family and friends. Class by class, the students took to the stage to recite a few of the well-known fairy tales, some dressed the part of

the different characters, including “Goldilocks and the Three Bears,” “Little Red Riding Hood,” “Beauty and the Beast,” and “Pinocchio.” Following the show, guests and fairy tale characters were all invited back to the cafeteria for a royal feast.

Smithtown High School East students Sydney Bracht and Matthew Mullahy, who are part of the ThINK Science Research Program, took first place at the recent Long Island Science and Engineering Fair. This honor qualifies them to compete in the International Science and Engineering Fair in Pittsburgh later this year. Bracht placed first in the category of animal sciences. She investigated the mechanisms behind cancer metastasis utilizing the nematode C. elegans, whose development of the reproductive system employs cell invasion, a process also found in cancer metastasis. Utilizing reverse genetics, she identified genes of interest that play a role in cell migration. Additionally, she created a novel strain in which fluorescence was added to key reproductive

cells to facilitate viewing of the invasion process. Bracht worked in the lab of Dr. David Matus and was mentored by Taylor Medwig, a doctoral candidate at Stony Brook University. Mullahy placed first in the category of behavioral and social science. He investigated brain NG2 glia cells, the decline of which has been associated with mood and anxiety disorders. His research works toward understanding the biological mechanisms behind depression. Mullahy also worked at Stony Brook University in the lab of Dr. Adan Aguirre and was mentored by doctoral candidate Alexandros Kokkosis. “It is a true testimony to the caliber of work that we do to see two students recognized for their research at the international level,” said Smithtown High School

Headed to ISEF East research coordinator Maria Zeitlin. “The untold hours and the true grit within these students, and all of the students in the program, illustrates that hard work, passion, and a love of science translates into measurable scientific discovery.” Also honored were Smithtown High School East students Shrey Thaker (third place in cellular and molecular biology), and Alexis McCauleyPearl (honorable mention and recipient of the Stockholm Water Prize). ISEF, the world’s largest international pre-college science competition, provides 1,800 high school students from more than 75 countries, regions, and territories the opportunity to present their independent research and compete for $4 million in prizes.

( N A P S ) — Osteoporosis—bone loss— is a serious condition that half of all women and many men can expect to develop at some time in their lives. Fortunately, it can be detected and treated. In fact, women who have a bone density scan have 35 percent fewer hip fractures

than those who do not. The problem is only 23 percent of eligible patients are scanned. The experts at the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) say that if you’re a woman over 65 or a man over 70 or if you’re over 50, postmenopausal and have risk factors for osteoporosis, you should

Seventh-graders Marissa Guttieri and Natalie Boeri from Great Hollow Middle School in the Smithtown Central School District participated in the American Association of Teachers of Italian 33rd annual poetry competition and Gara di Cucina baking contest on April 13th at In celebration of Earth Day the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Dedicated the Unique Area on Meadow Road in Kings Park to local hero, Sgt. Clarence Hylan Beavers of the 555th Parachute Infantry Battalion, aka the Triple Nickles. Carrie Meek Gallagher the DEC Region 1 Director, joined with Assemblyman Mike Fitzpatrick, Councilwoman Lisa Inzerillo, Councilman Tom Lohmann, USDA Forest Service officials, surviving members of 555th Parachute Infantry Battalion and members of Sgt. Beavers’ family unveiled an interpretive kiosk and dedication of the Kings Park trail (known as the Unique Area) in memory the the

World War II, Triple Nickle paratrooper. “As Assemblyman Fitzpatrick and Councilman Lohmann will tell you, we had a week filled with events. And everywhere we went, people were talking about Sgt. Beavers and his extraordinary life. Every time you bring your family here or happen pass this beautiful trail, remember how he lived, devoted to his family, nation and fellow man,” Councilwoman Lisa Inzerillo Sgt. Clarence Hylan Beavers, who passed away on December 4th, 2017, was the last surviving member of the 555th Parachute Infantry Battalion’s first class of all African-American paratroopers. During WWII, Sgt. Beavers and his fellow Triple Nickle

paratroopers worked a joint military and Forest Service mission, together with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service on Operation Firefly. The mission was intended to prevent Japanese incendiary bomb attacks from destroying the nation’s western forests. The 0.3-mile accessible trail and interpretive kiosk is located in the Unique Area on Meadow Road in Kings Park. The dedication of the trail to Huntington resident Sgt. Clarence Hylan Beavers is to raise awareness to how the 555th Parachute Infantry Battalion pioneered the nation’s smokejumper program, which contributed to the integration of the U.S. military in 1948.

Bull STEAM Ahead Showing off the many interactive, hands-on learning experiences available throughout the district, the Maker Space Club from Smithtown High School East invited students and their families to Bull STEAM Ahead evening on April 20th. Maker Space activities – with topics covering science, technology,

engineering, art and math – were offered for students to experience. They checked out 3-D printing technology, made their own math origami, worked with circuits, videoed themselves on a green screen and used virtual reality glasses. Technologies of the past also made an appearance, and some students had fun

learning to use a typewriter. STEM professionals from local businesses were on hand to answer questions, and the Mechanical Bulls robotics team set up outside the cafeteria to showcase their creations. Admission was free with a nonperishable food donation, which the Maker Space Club will collect for a local food pantry.

The cost to the Town of Smithtown was $23,950.00 of which 50% will be reimbursed to the town by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. Disposing toxic materials improperly can damage the environment and cause harm to humans and animals alike. The Town of Smithtown began the regularly scheduled Household Hazardous Waste Collection Events in 2009 and has grown in popularity since its inception.

The Smithtown Youth Bureau enlisted the help of more than 95 teen volunteers who came ready to work at Hoyt Farm Nature Preserve in honor of Global Youth Service Day. Each young volunteer helped to get Hoyt Farm ready for the season, cleaning the Pollinator Gardens, pasture woods and the animal stalls. The Smithtown Parks Department provided the volunteers with rakes, gloves, pails and necessary farm tools to help clean up the farm. Hoyt Farm Director, Jeff Gurmin and his team of devoted professionals educated each of the volunteers regarding the rescued animals and the various benefits they are providing the preserve by assisting in the clean up. “I want to personally thank Stacey Sanders and Karen Aldrich of

the Smithtown Youth Bureau for always going above and beyond for our future generations. They represent the town with such prestige and the service they provide to our young is immeasurable. The real heroes today are the 95 young Smithtown residents, who have provided a service to our community which they can come back to see all year round at Hoyt Farm. species, but they aided in local food production, purifying the local ecosystem and protected the various species. The young volunteers were thrilled when it came time to clean the animal stalls. They were met by very affectionate billy goats, hens, rabbits and one very social cow. Each volunteer was uniformed with a Global Youth Service Day T-Shirt, an honorary certificate, water bottle, small bag of pretzels and a milkweed seed packet, so they could create their own pollinator garden at home. In addition to the collaboration between the parks department and the Smithtown Youth Bureau, Smithtown Public Safety and the Animal Shelter were on site with special guest Loki, who received hundreds of belly rubs from the kids throughout the day.

Test the alarms monthly and change the batteries when needed.

Never disable a smoke alarm. Teach children what an alarm sounds like and what to do if they hear one. The Town of Smithtown held the first Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event of the year on Saturday April 21st, at the Town Municipal Services Facility, located at 85 Old Northport Road in Kings Park. There were approximately 500 households who participated, resulting in 36,100 pounds, or over 18.05 tons of hazardous material collected to be sent to safe disposal sites. Notable items collected included waste oil based paints/ flammable paints, gasoline, paint thinners, waste gases, petroleum distillates, flammable solids, oxidizers liquids and solids, sodium/ potassium nitrates, acids, corrosives, pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers, miscellaneous toxic liquids

Naval Sea Cadet Program

Seventy years ago, the U.S. Navy requested that an organization of young sea cadets be formed to “create a favorable image of the Navy on the part of American youth.” The Theodore Roosevelt Division of the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps follows through with that edict while carrying on Long Island’s rich and enduring maritime heritage. This past weekend, dedicated cadets, ages 13 to 18, rose

with the sun, donned their fatigues, and headed for training drills at the U.S. Coast Guard station in East Moriches, as they do one weekend each month. The Naval Sea Cadet program develops cadets’ abilities in seamanship while also instilling in cadets the virtues of good citizenship, moral principles and public service. Cadets hail from all over Suffolk County, with monthly activities ranging from seamanship, map

topography and fitness drills, to basic medical training, self-defense and more.And yes, cadets are required to drop and do 10 (push-ups) for training infractions! “The Sea Cadet program stewards seamanship while also inspiring young men and women to reach their fullest potential. But, if you ask cadets why they’re in the Sea Cadet program, they may simply tell you that it's fun,” said Forrest

Woodward, Commanding Officer of the Theodore Roosevelt Division of the U.S. Naval Sea Cadets. Added Robert Garceau, Executive Officer of the Theodore Roosevelt Division, “Cadets might not even have a driver’s license but in training they may be at the helm of a multimillion dollar U.S. Navy warship. The learning and leadership opportunities are quite astounding.” Commander Woodward knows well the inspiration provided by the Naval Sea Cadet program. He served in the U.S. Army, the Department of Defense and as a Federal Agent, but it was his formative years as a teenage Naval Sea Cadet that helped shape his desire for public service. He carries on that torch of inspiration at the Theodore Roosevelt Division, which is among four Sea Cadet divisions in Nassau and Suffolk Counties; others are based in Farmingdale, Northport and West Sayville. Each also has a

junior cadet program for ages 11 to 13. At the Coast Guard Station in East Moriches,cadets learn leadership, organization and discipline and are also instilled with the Navy values of honor, courage and commitment. The division’s cadets currently number 27 young men and women, with the command staff consisting of both veteran and civilian leaders. In addition to training on Long Island, cadets are offered advanced training such as aboard naval vessels, at submarine school, military law enforcement training, and there’s even a Navy SEAL challenge. Training is also integrated into local communities, with cadets serving as Honor Guard formations leading parades or sending off WWII veterans on Honor Flights, or the cadets might serve as sentries for a 5K-run, paint a community building, and more. Added Woodward,“Long

Island has a rich maritime heritage, so it’s only natural that the Naval Sea Cadets have a strong presence in our communities.” Naval Sea Cadets attend the monthly weekend drills dressed in standard Navy fatigues, as authorized by the Secretary of the Navy. They are also issued formal uniforms including summer dress-whites topped with the iconic “dixie cup” (white canvas hat with upturned brim). The Naval Sea Cadet Corps was founded by the Naval League of the United States in 1958 at the request of the Department of the Navy. The Theodore Roosevelt Division, a nonprofit organization, is named in honor of the 26th president of the United States who was a Long Island resident, Medal of Honor recipient, and had a rich naval history including serving as Assistant Secretary of the Navy.

An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay.

The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad

cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the

risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to

be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease. That news may be especially important

for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.
