Flat Stanley Project

he first graders at Indian Hollow Primary School in Commack are involved in a very special project. They just finished reading Flat Stanley, by Jeff Brown. In this story, the main character, Stanley Lambchop, was flattened by a bulletin board! After being flattened, Stanley had many adventures and visited people all over the world by being mailed to them. Pictured are several of the students with their Flat Stanley projects.

With the beautiful weather upon us, many might be inclined to hop on a plane and travel to a tropical island to bask in the warm rays of the sun. But why even leave Long Island? world by being mailed to them. Each first grader mailed his/her own “Flat Stanley” to a friend or relative out of state, or even out of the country. The students were thrilled when local postal worker, Pat Colon, personally came to each classroom to collect the letters (photo). The students are now eagerly

awaiting the return of their own Flat Stanley to Indian Hollow, and teachers will map all of the places that Flat Stanley visited, incorporating social studies and geography lessons. As a culminating activity, the entire first grade attended a live performance of “Flat Stanley” at the Northport Theater!

Hauppauge High School is proud to announce that Dan Concannon has been named a New York State Master Teacher. Concannon joins 215 educators statewide – 42 from Long Island – who have earned this distinction since the program launched in October 2013. The Master Teachers Program focuses on teachers of science, technology, engineering

and math – or STEM subjects. The program was established by Governor Andrew Cuomo to identify, reward and support master math and science teachers throughout New York State. State officials said that the newly named Master Teachers have a combined total of 2,700 years of teaching experience. Their subject areas of expertise include calculus, algebra, physics, earth science, chemistry, engineering design and development and genetics. These educators will receive $60,000 in compensation from New York State for their efforts in the four-year-long program. They will be required to mentor their peers in the classroom, further develop their own expertise and enhance the

overall learning experience of students for years to come. Master Teacher candidates submitted personal statements, reports on their classroom performance and three letters of recommendation – including one from a current or former student. Applicants were also required to take content specific PRAXIS Exams. In February, prospective candidates conducted lesson plans and interviews at Stony Brook University in front of University professors and other prospective master teachers. Their applications were reviewed by SUNY admissions officers, former teachers and principals, school district leaders and others.

With this award came a $1000 grant from The Allstate Foundation for the Guide Dog Foundation for the Blind, with which Reimels volunteers.

and even let a member of our group take a ride on its shell. I’ve never been this close to a turtle in the wild before, and was curious as to why it stuck around. When we boarded the boat, we found out it was turtle mating season, which could explain its interest in us. We even went spear fishing on this vacation. With the third largest reef system in the world, fish were abundant. We caught nearly a dozen fish, and had so much fun while doing it. At the blue hole known as El Dorado, we dove nearly one hundred and fifty feet into the Earth’s crust. These inland flooded caves serve as a time capsule, harboring the preserved bones of species that are now extinct. While surrounded by stalagmites, my family felt completely immersed in the history, culture and beauty of Andros Island. The bone fishing is some of the best in the world.

Although I didn’t get a chance to try it, apparently there are some monster bonefish in shallow water here. To get to Andros, it is necessary to take a small plane from the main airport in Nassau, Bahamas. This may be a deterrent to some travelers, but the island is worth it. With the clearest waters I’ve ever seen combined with undeveloped beaches, Andros offers abundant wildlife in a serene natural setting. Despite the lack of major hotels, there are plenty of lodges that a “high rise” hotel might offer. Many of us can go a week without a spa or basketball court. We aren’t going on vacation for those aspects. Andros Island proved to be one of the most relaxing places that I’ve ever been to, and I would recommend it for any adventurous person looking to spend a vacation on a surprisingly pleasant island.

Finding Paradise On An Island

For many years, Andros Island in the Bahamas has remained an untouched treasure for marine enthusiasts. From the white sand beaches to the deep blue holes, Andros Island has just as much to offer as any popular vacation spot. As I am writing this, I’m sitting on the beach, with no other human being in sight. This island is desolate. With an area roughly twice the size of Long Island and only three thousand inhabitants, Andros isn’t too crowded. The diving is simply incredible. During our first scuba dive of the vacation, we saw roughly eight sharks. Ranging from reef sharks to nurse sharks to a twelve foot bull shark, our first dive was full of big creature encounters. On another dive, during our safety stop, we were confronted with a leatherback turtle roughly the size of me. It was swimming around us,

An Eagle Court of Honor celebrating the achievement of James Ryan, Boy Scout Troop 125’s 94th Eagle Scout, was held on April 12th at the Commack United Methodist Church. For his Eagle Leadership Service Project, James refurbished the Fellowship Hall of the Commack United Methodist Church (CUMC). The walls and doors were bleached and painted in the main area, restrooms and hallways, all trim throughout the areas were also painted, water damaged ceiling tiles were removed and replaced, and molding and fresh carpeting was installed on the eight supporting columns. Extra effort was not only made to protect the Boy Scout Mural but it was touched up as well. “The Fellowship Hall serves the community for other charitable and outreach programs in addition to being the sponsor for Troop 125. This was a great way to say thank you to CUMC!,” says James. James began scouting in the first grade as a Tiger Scout with Cub Scout Pack 329 and continued through fifth grade as a Webelos where he went on to earn the Arrow of Light, the only badge earned as a Cub Scout that can be worn on a Boy Scout uniform. He joined Boy Scout Troop 125 in 2007 and he enjoyed many years of experiences on an array of trips and adventures including a high adventure trip to the Florida National Sea Base in the Florida Keys. Mather Founder’s Award will be presented to International Recovery Associates (IRA) of Nesconset, a full service collection agency for both the commercial and medical industries. The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Bob received a ballistic vest thanks to a non-profit organization, Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. A $950 donation was made to the charity by the Romano Family

in memory of William F. Romano, retired Decorated Detective and member of New York City Police Department Elite Crime Scene Unit. Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. is a 501c (3) charity located in East Taunton, MA, whose mission is to provide bullet and stab protective vests and other assistance to dogs of law enforcement and related agencies throughout the United States. Each vest costs $950.00 and has a 5 year warranty. The nonprofit was established in 2009 to assist law enforcement agencies with this potentially life saving body armor for their four legged K9 Officers. Through private and corporate sponsorships, Vested Interest in K9s, Inc.

provided over 930 law enforcement dogs in 39 states with protective vests since 2009 at a cost of $880,000. The organization orders the U.S. made vests exclusively from distributor Regency Police Supply in Hyannis, MA, who also does the custom embroidery on the body armor. New K9 graduates as well as K9’s with expired vests are eligible to participate. The program is open to law enforcement dogs who are US employed, certified and at least 19 months of age. Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. was named as a charity partner in March of 2014 in a nationwide Groupon Campaign which raised

over $335,000 in 19 days. The non-profit will be providing over 350 law enforcement dogs nationwide with the protective body armor in memory of K9 Rocco of the Pittsburgh Police Department who sacrificed his life in the line of duty in January of 2014. It is designed to combine the functionality of a conventional helicopter with the long-range, highspeed cruise performance of a turboprop aircraft. The United States Marine Corps and Air Force operate the Osprey. John Klatt Airshows’ – Screamin’ Sasquatch Jet

Waco Aerobatic Team, unveiled recently at the International Council of Air Shows in Las Vegas, will also be making its Bethpage Air Show debut. The airplane, a Taperwing Waco made famous by barnstormers of the 1920s and 30s, adds the modern twist of a jet engine that will thrill spectators with amazing sights and sounds. John Klatt, a Lieutenant Colonel in the Air National Guard, who fought in Operation Iraqi Freedom in Iraq, and Jeff Boerboon, a U.S. Unlimited Aerobatics Champion, will pilot the Screamin’ Sasquatch. The Bethpage Air Show will be held Memorial Day weekend 2014 at Jones Beach State Park, Wantagh, on Saturday, May 24th, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Sunday, May 25th, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Air Show is free to the public, but

the standard $10 vehicle use fee will be collected each day upon entry to the State Park. For 2014 NYS Empire Passport holders, there is no vehicle use fee charge.
