Essential Staff Providing Care For Animals On Campus Amid Coronavirus (Covid19) Pandemic North Shore Animal League America’s Adoption Center is currently conducting adoption by appointment only. Our Adoption Team is contacting pre-approved adopters with a scheduled day and time to complete their adoption. The health and wellbeing of NSALA staff, volunteers, adopters, and the community remains our priority at this time. We currently have over 40 dogs of various ages and sizes on campus, as well as more than 100 felines, from kittens to older cats, all looking for loving homes. As always, the animals on the NSALA Port Washington campus are being well-cared for by our devoted staff. In addition to finding homes for more than 110 canines, some of whom were from our recent Mill Dog rescue (we saved 100 dogs and puppies from deplorable
conditions with some going to our area shelter partners,) we have also placed more than 30 animals into foster homes. During this time, the Alex Lewyt Veterinary Medical Center will remain open to see sick patients and emergency cases only. While we are doing adoptions by appointment, NSALA’s Adoption Center is temporarily closed to the general public in accordance with New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo’s statewide directives and to control the number of people in the Adoption Center at any one time. People are always on the lookout for delicious dishes that are easily cooked on the grill. Burgers are a staple of grilling season. Burgers might be relatively simple, but that does not mean they have to be ordinary. Switching up the main ingredient (i.e., the ground meat) used as the basis for burgers is an easy way to add a new flavor profile to this familiar dish. Turkey is a versatile ingredient that can be flavored in many different ways with spices and other ingredients to add punch to turkey’s relatively mild taste. “Turkey Burgers with Mango Salsa” from “Taste of Home Healthy Cooking Cookbook” (Taste of Home Books) by the editors of Taste of Home adds a tropical spin to classic cookout menus. This recipe also offers a special treat by way of a spreadable cheese nestled right in the heart of the burger patties. Turkey Burgers with Mango Salsa Makes 6 servings 1⁄2 1⁄3 2 41⁄2 11⁄2 1

In a large bowl, combine the first eight ingredients. Crumble turkey over mixture and mix well. Shape into six patties. Moisten a paper towel with cooking oil; using
long-handled tongs, lightly coat the grill rack. Grill burgers, covered, over medium heat or broil 4 inches from the heat for 4 to 6 minutes on each side, or until a thermometer
reads 165 F and juices run clear. Grill buns, uncovered, for 1 to 2 minutes or until toasted. Place burgers on bun bottoms. Top with salsa. Replace bun tops.

Even if the plates only momentarily came into contact with uncooked food, they should be thoroughly washed in hot, soapy water after coming into contact with raw foods. Bacteria from the raw juices of food can easily spread to cooked or ready-toeat foods, potentially
contributing to illness. The FDA recommends cooks keep clean platters and utensils next to their grills that they can use to serve food. In addition, if using a bristle brush to clean cooking surfaces prior to firing up the grill, inspect the brush to make sure it’s clean and that the bristles do not still contain any specks of food or other foreign objects from a previous grilling session. Once the grill has been cleaned, make sure none of the bristles fell off and onto the grill.

Pet owners can rest easy that there is no reason to believe that dogs or cats in the United States might be a source of infection for the new coronavirus disease — COVID-19 — or cause its spread according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia. And so far, according to the CDC, there have been no reports of pets becoming sick with COVID-19. This coronavirus appears to be primarily transmitted from human to human. As a pet owner, you may have heard of canine coronavirus, an intestinal infection in dogs, especially puppies, and feline coronavirus, which can cause feline infectious peritonitis (FIP). These types of coronaviruses have been around for quite some time and are not associated with the current outbreak. To protect yourself, your family, and possibly even

A Smithtown High School West student enlisted the help of her friends to spread kindness and smiles to frontline workers and the community during this pandemic. Grace Kamvakis, a junior at Smithtown High School West, and her mom Heidi, decided to paint rocks with inspirational thoughts on them, and leave them at the local hospitals. Grace enlisted some friends at High School West to help: Caitlin Camilleri, Olivia
Bove, Goeun Chang, Carissa Philips and Jenna and Julia Savino. After collecting and sealing the rocks from all the girls, Grace and her mom ventured out Easter morning. They graciously dropped off more than 200 rocks at the employee entryway at Huntington Hospital and St. Catherine of Sienna entryway and their serenity garden. Along with the rocks, they made inspirational signs of gratitude to all the doctors, nurses and health care
workers and employees. They also included a note to take a rock and to spread positivity. Since then, some of these rocks showing up on walking trails in the area. The girls are hoping their act will inspire more students to express random acts of kindness in the community. They have even received a call from St. Catherine’s asking for more for its serenity garden.
Guardians Of Rescue Is Struggling To Help The Animals Most of us are aware of the toll that the pandemic is having on humans around the country, and even around the world. Yet the economic impacts are being felt beyond humans. The animals are being impacted in numerous ways through this situation, leaving some animal rescue organizations to struggle in being able to provide their services. Guardians of Rescue has had an increase in dogs to care for, while their financial stability to do so declines. Guardians of Rescue is overwhelmed with the hardest hit people who can’t feed their pets and taking in abandoned animals left to fend for themselves which has become a big problem. Now, they are now turning to the people and asking that their organization be rescued amid the pandemic. “We have been providing our rescue services for over 10 years, but now we are struggling to keep our organization going,” explains Robert Misseri, president of Guardians of Rescue, an animal rescue organization. “We are in jeopardy because of the perfect storm that this pandemic has created for organizations such as ours. Many people are living paycheck to paycheck so pets are in trouble.” The pandemic has impacted Guardians of Rescue and other animal shelters in a variety of ways, including: Due to so many people having their employment impacted by the virus, donations to the organization are down. This makes it difficult for them
to continue feeding the animals, building doghouses, taking in new rescues, and trying to cover all their expenses. Some rescue organizations are seeing adoptions and fosters up but this is because people are homebound right now. This leaves the shelters worried about what will happen to the animals when people go back to work. There are some people who fear for their own well-being and financial stability, which motivates them to drop their pets off at the rescue shelter. They feel they can’t adequately take care of their pets during this time, so they surrender them, putting more strain on shelters. Many shelters have to cancel fundraising events that usually bring in a lot of money to fund their programs. Additionally, some shelters offer spring break camps as a fundraising tool, and those had to be canceled due to the pandemic. Many rescue organizations and shelters are trying to help people care for their pets by providing them with food. This helps to keep the person from surrendering the animals to the shelter or rescue organization. Food donations to many shelters are down, simply because people are focused on their own families and are staying home. uch like St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated by people with no trace of Irish heritage, Cinco de Mayo has become a day of celebration for people who do not trace their ancestry to Mexico. In fact, History.com notes that Cinco de Mayo is a relatively minor holiday in Mexico, where the day commemorates a symbolic yet not significantly strategic win by a heavily outnumbered Mexican army over French forces sent by Napoleon III to establish an empire on Mexican land. In the United States, Cinco de Mayo has become a day to commemorate Mexican culture, including its much-loved cuisine.
Food is front and center at many Cinco de Mayo celebrations. Those who simply want to enjoy some homemade Mexican fare this Cinco de Mayo can try their hands at this recipe for “Fiery Corn Salsa” from Kelley Cleary Coffeen’s “200 Easy Mexican Recipes” (Robert Rose).
FIERY CORN SALSA Makes 2 cups 1⁄4 3
tablespoons freshly squeezed lime juice

DIRECTIONS In a large bowl, combine oil, lime juice and cilantro. Add tomatoes, corn and jalapeño to taste. Mix well until corn mixture is well coated. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Transfer to an airtight container and refrigerate, stirring occasionally, for 1 hour or up to 2 days. TIP In place of the corn kernels, you can used canned corn, drained; frozen corn, thawed; or corn from the cob, cooked on the stove top. For a smoky flavor, use corn grilled on the barbecue grill.

inco de Mayo celebrates the 1862 defeat of the French by the Mexican army at the Battle of Puebla. That battle occurred during the Franco-Mexican War, which was an invasion of Mexico launched by the French in 1861. The French invaded Mexico as a result of newly elected Mexican President Benito Juarez's decision to suspend interest payments on loans the country took out from foreign countries. France was one such creditor, but the French were not the only country to send troops to Mexico in response to Juarez's decision. Spain and Great Britain also sent troops to Veracruz, but both countries entered negotiations with Mexico and ultimately
withdrew their forces. However, France, under the leadership of Napoleon III, wanted to ensure access to Latin American markets. The French naval fleet's arrival in Veracruz forced President Juarez and his government to retreat. Months later, Juarez's force of 2,000 squared off against 6,000 French troops at the Battle of Puebla. Despite being heavily outnumbered, the Mexican forces claimed victory, losing fewer than 100 men while French casualties numbered nearly 500. While the victory itself did not prove a major win in the war against the French, it symbolized the strength of the Mexican people and served to strengthen the resistance movement. Cinco de Mayo is a minor holiday in Mexico, but has grown into a popular celebration of Mexican culture in the United States.

Ronkonkoma based nonprofit Options for Community Living, Inc. was awarded a $7,500 grant from Bethpage Federal Credit Union. Funding supports Options’ scattered-site supportive housing program for formerly homeless individuals and families with disabilities and those living with HIV/AIDS. “This award couldn’t have come at a better time,” said Yolanda Robano-Gross, Options Executive Director. “As all Long Islanders struggle with the COVID-19 Pandemic, our residents have been greatly impacted. Our staff is a real lifeline for those with compromised immune systems, dropping off donated meals and food, and providing support to help them stay safe and get through this crisis.” Supportive housing provides a long-term solution to homelessness
for vulnerable people. Last year, Options’ supportive housing program for formerly homeless people with disabilities and those with HIV/AIDS provided housing to more than 200 Long Islanders. Bethpage Federal Credit Union grant funds will be used to support expenses including home maintenance and services which are critical to program management, tenant stability, and housing safety. “We are proud of our partnership with Options for Community Living, Inc. and glad that we could support their increased housing and maintenance needs due to the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Linda Armyn, Senior Vice President of Corporate Affairs at Bethpage. During this period of uncertainty, finding ways to pay bills or keep medical benefits are top concerns for many. Here are some tips from Janine Nowatzky, managing director of Inside Rx. What is unemployment insurance and how do I sign up? Unemployment insurance is a program between your state and the federal government that provides money when you’ve lost your job. With the federal government’s passage of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act, you can receive an enhanced benefit. It authorizes: • Self-employed and gig workers to receive benefits • An extra $600 a week for up to six months • An extra 13 weeks of benefits beyond what your state currently provides Each state’s rules are different. Review your state’s unemployment insurance program to learn about how to apply for benefits. Or learn more by visiting www.usa.gov/ unemployment.
How much money will I get? It will vary by state. But remember, under the CARES Act, you will be able to get an additional $600 a week for up to six months. The program’s start date was set to Jan. 27. So if you lost your job due to COVID19-related reasons between the end of January and now, then you should be able to receive the additional benefit. What about health insurance? It’s scary to think about getting through this pandemic without health insurance. What benefits you’re able to keep all depends on who you work for. The first step is to ask your employer. They may allow you to continue your health coverage for a short period of absence. If your employer is allowing you to keep your insurance, be sure to clarify if your missed premium payments will be: • Covered partially or fully by your employer • Deducted when you come back to work • Have to be paid now to continue getting insurance Your employer may also offer health care coverage through COBRA, but that can be very expensive. A limited number of states have also opened
enrollment to their own Affordable Care Act (ACA) health insurance exchanges. You may be able to sign up for a health insurance plan – even without a life-changing event, which is the usual exception to the standard open enrollment periods. What about prescription medications? It’s so important to keep taking your medications to stay as strong and healthy as possible. If you weren’t able to get health insurance with prescription benefits, there are prescription drug savings programs like Inside Rx that can help. The program offers access to thousands of brand and generic medications for you, your family, and your pets at a fraction of the cost, helping you save an average of 40 to 80 percent. You can fill your prescription at over 60,000 pharmacies in the U.S. and Puerto Rico. Starting in early April, the Smithtown High School West football team decided to take action and partner with its neighboring football teams to support frontline workers in hospitals. The Football Feeds Front Liners program was designed to do just that, while also supporting local restaurants which may be struggling during this time. In response to the COVID-19 crisis and the effect it is having on communities, the football team partnered with Sojak Events, a local production company, to organize the movement. The program brings meals to those who are putting their own lives on the line each day to help local families stay healthy and protected. “We kicked this off by donating 40 meals to St. Catherine of Siena Hospital in Smithtown on April 8, and we are challenging other local Long Island high school football teams
and their coaches to give whatever they can,” said Smithtown High School West football coach Ron Muscarella. “We know that this is a difficult time for everyone but if the teams are in a position to give even a small amount, it will help provide a catered meal or snack drop to our local front liners. Our goal is two-fold; provide some comfort through food for those who can’t stay home, while using local restaurants who are also struggling economically,” he added. “We are looking for the next teams to provide for Mather and Saint Charles hospitals and will continue to provide comfort and hope with each donation to various hospitals on Long Island for those on the front lines.” So far, the program has provided more than 200 meals, most recently delivering 50 meals to Long Island Community Hospital with food from
Rudi’s Bar and Grill. Teams can choose one of two options to donate. For $100, they can feed 10 front liners (a small hospital unit) breakfast or lunch or for a $150 donation, they can feed 25 people (a large unit) breakfast or lunch. Many of the donations are coming from money already raised by the football teams, through booster clubs and prior fundraising events. The goal is to challenge another team to do the same, using different social media platforms. “Football has always been a sport that gathers fans in large cheering crowds, excited to see their favorite players and teams,” Muscarella said. “As sports teams across the country are on pause from playing the games they love, what better way to show our sportsmanship and passion for the game than giving back to the ‘teams’ that need it most right now.”

As we still find ourselves enduring this pandemic, we are slowly yet surely seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. T h e r e is talk of re-opening businesses, heightened anxiety seems to be diminishing and the curve has begun to flatten. My thoughts and prayers remain with those in need, as well as those serving on the frontlines. We will continue to stand strong and one day this pandemic will fully be behind us.
This past week, our Publisher was able to purchase toilet paper and paper towels in bulk. He kindly left a large stash of these items in our office and let each employee know that they can take some home as needed. It was a selfless gesture and people appreciated it. However, when I got home I chuckled at the thought of it! Who would have thought that toilet paper and paper towels would ever be viewed as hot items and that employees would get excited over the distribution of paper products? Not me!

Just like with those paper products, there are moments where I forget just how important they are to me.

Two COVID-19 Clinical Trials Offer Patients Hope
Catholic Health Services (CHS) is participating in two clinical trials aimed at developing treatments for COVID-19. CHS is participating in a Mayo Clinic trial that will use convalescent plasma donated by recovered COVID-19 patents to treat individuals who continue to fight the virus. The second study involves using the medication remdesivir, which was developed to treat the Ebola virus and has been successfully used for other coronaviruses including Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS). The convalescent plasma study is being offered at CHS’s six hospitals. The remdesivir trial is taking place at St. Francis Hospital, The Heart Center® in Roslyn and at Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip. Initial data available from studies using COVID-19 convalescent plasma to treat individuals with severe or life-threatening conditions related to the virus indicate that a single dose (200 milliliters/6.8 ounces) of plasma showed a
benefit for some patients, leading to improvement. People who recover from COVID-19 do so, in part, because their blood contains antibodies that are able to fight the virus. Prior research of other viruses found that treating patients with plasma obtained from those who have recovered from the same virus leads to rapid improvement. The use of remdesivir to treat COVID-19 follows limited testing in the United States, Canada, China and elsewhere that led to an improvement in the condition of some patients afflicted with the virus. “Catholic Health Services is excited to be on the front lines and participate in these clinical trials for COVID-19,” said CHS Senior Vice President and Chief Quality Officer Jason Golbin, DO, MBA, MS. “Our clinical teams have spent several weeks caring for COVID-19 patients. It means a great deal to everyone to take part in these two cuttingedge research efforts.” Potential plasma donors must have a prior, verified diagnosis of COVID-19, but are now symptomfree and fully recovered. In addition to being in good health, donors must
also be at least 18 years of age and weigh at least 110 pounds. The plasma can be administered only to a consenting COVID-19 patient or a patient whose family member offers consent. The treatment will be given to those patients judged by a physician to be at high risk of disease progression to severe or life-threatening. The treatment regimen using remdesivir takes place over 10 days and includes a 200-milligram dose on the first day and a 100-milligram dose on days 2 to 10. Details on how to donate plasma and additional information on the two clinical trials may be obtained by calling CHS at 1(855) CHS-4500.
