Smithtown Shreds12.11 Tons Of Paper The Town of Smithtown Department of Environment and Waterways, in partnership with the Municipal Services Facility hosted the first of two Paper Shredding Events. On Saturday April 10th, 430 vehicles delivered more than 12.11 tons of sensitive documents to MSF for secure shredding. The event was held at Municipal
Services Facility, located at 85 Old Northport Road, in Kings Park. “I’d like to first thank our DEW team, and MSF personnel, who provided friendly and fast service to our fellow residents. The flow of vehicles was steady all day long and our community members were extremely grateful for the service. The shredding

The record holder for this event was in September of 2020, with 440 households and more than sixteen tons of sensitive documents safely shredded. However, due to the peak of the Coronavirus Pandemic in April of 2020, the town only hosted the one shredding event last year. “We saw about three times the normal volume from our 2019 events, before covid hit. We anticipated this based on last year’s numbers, and made adjustments to staffing and a second shredding truck. The residents were grateful for the expedited service, virtually no wait times and friendly door to shredder service courtesy of DEW and MSF staff. I’d also like to thank Supervisor Wehrheim and the Town Board for supporting this bi-annual event each year.” - Michael Engelmann, Solid
Waste Coordinator Residents were asked to wear face masks and to remain in vehicles in an effort to practice safety & social distancing guidelines, and in protection of the public’s health amid the coronavirus. Additional staff and a second industrial shredder truck were incorporated into this year’s event to ensure fast and efficient service for
residents. All personal documents were safely destroyed by Data Shredding Service, Inc., a full-service confidential shredding service located on Corporate Drive in Hauppauge. The next paper shredding event is scheduled for September 25, 2021 from 9AM - 3PM at Municipal Services Facility (MSF) located at 85 Old Northport Road in Kings Park, NY.

Contractors For Kids (CFK) is a non-profit organization, which was founded for the purpose of providing assistance to families in Long Island communities. Their goal is to assist children and their families overcome obstacles that have unfortunately changed or have impacted their lives through the sickness, injury or death of a child. They are committed to this cause and want to give hope and reassurance for the futures of Long Islanders. CFK was founded in 2005 by Kevin Harney and Alan Nahmias of Stalco Construction. Kevin and Alan, both long-time philanthropists, saw the growing need for financial assistance in our communities and knew that something more needed to be done. Through random acts of kindness, they were slowly changing the lives of others, however they thirsted to make more change so they decided to form this non-profit, Contractors For Kids. Their organization runs on donations only and is volunteer based, they have no employees. One family at a time, they make sure that the financial hardship brought on by sickness, injury or death does not destroy an already hurting family. Whether it is to pay a phone bill or a mortgage payment, they want to be there to help. Since 2005, CFK has given out more than 3 MILLION DOLLARS to help local Long Islanders. Here are some of the areas they’ve helped others financially: Rent, Mortgage Payments, Oil Deliveries, Utility Bills, Food, Transportation To & From Hospitals, Co-Payments, Medications & Funeral Expenses. So how do you qualify to get help? It’s quite simple. Seventh graders at Nesaquake Middle School in the Smithtown Central School District participated in a walk to raise awareness about the water crisis in South Sudan during the first two weeks in April. The seventh graders recently read the novel “A Long Walk to Water.” The
main character Nya is one of the many girls in South Sudan who walks from morning to night gathering water from ponds and lakes to bring back to their families. Most times, the water is muddy and filled with contaminants. The book inspired students to help raise money for Water for South
Sudan, which builds wells in villages so the girls can go to school instead of walking for water every day and helps eliminate diseases from drinking contaminated water as well. The students walked a mile, raising more than $1,700.

Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer Rob Calarco has announced that a virtual career fair will be held for those interested in jobs in
the marine industry. Presiding Officer Calarco and the legislature’s Marine Industry Revitalization Advisory Council (MIRAC), in partnership
with the Suffolk County Department of Labor, Licensing and Consumer Affairs and the Association of Marine Industries, will host the virtual fair on

This career fair will have something for everyone, whether you are a highly skilled worker looking for a permanent position, someone who is seeking a seasonal opportunity, or a student looking for information on internships or summer employment in the marine industrial field.” Jobseekers and students will be able to join in a discussion with industry experts about marine careers and meet with local employers and leaders during breakout sessions focused on marinas and recreational boating, aquaculture, commercial fishing, and educational opportunities. “The Association of Marine Industries is proud to partner with Suffolk County in presenting this virtual career fair,” the association’s president, Vincent R. Pesce, and
vice president, Eric Kreuter, said in a joint statement. “The fair will paint a picture of what it is like to work in the marine industry and allow attendees to explore the pathways to employment in many different areas. With summer quickly approaching, boat yards, marinas and other marinerelated businesses are looking to hire workers in all kinds of positions, from dock workers to technicians, and this will be a great way for jobseekers to see what opportunities are available.” “I applaud the multiple Suffolk County stakeholder groups, along with the Association of Marine Industries, for moving forward with the virtual job fair,” said David Wicks, District Superintendent of Eastern Suffolk BOCES and chair of the Marine Industry Revitalization Advisory Council’s Education and Workforce Development Subcommittee. “Despite the pandemic, we have jobs within the industry that remain unfilled and Suffolk County residents that are in need of employment. to work together to help protect, promote and grow one of the pillars of Suffolk County’s economy. The council’s Education and Workforce Development Subcommittee focuses on providing career opportunities and developing a robust marine engineering, fishing, boating, and waterfront workforce through vocational programs and new education programs at local colleges and high schools. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the marine industry and oceanrelated jobs accounted for 33,000 jobs and $983 million in wages in Suffolk County in 2015 alone.
