Making Memories Students at Dogwood Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District took part in a special hands-on art project throughout the week of April 18th with artist-in-resident Esther
Tollen. During art classes, each student had the chance to work with Tollen in creating a painted tile mural that will hung outside the library. The project gives students
the opportunity to work with a new medium while making a one-of-a-kind piece that will create a lasting memory in the building.

10 a.m. The Pitch, Hit and Run competition is a baseball skills competition run by Major League Baseball and sponsored by Scotts for boys and girls ages 7 to 14. Participants will have an opportunity based off of their performance to advance to the Sectional Level competition, then to the Team Championship competition hosted at one of the 30 Major League Baseball parks, and finally to the National Finals hosted at Petco Park in San Diego, CA during All-Star Week. This is Leslie Kenney’s second annual Pitch, Hit and Run, but she follows in a long tradition of Pitch, Hit, and Run competitions hosted in Nesconset. Once again, the Nesconset Athletic Association will help to facilitate the competition, and special thanks go out to them. The Athletic Association will be sure to uphold the integrity of the competition, and they look forward to a great turnout from young athletes all throughout the community. As I often do when beset with burdens, I took to the wharf down by the bay To view the choppy waters have their way. Five minutes passed, and my concerns began to fade; Nature had spun its magic, majestic and unafraid. Soon I noticed people in cars surround me, Sharing this comfort the scene implored. It’s nice to know there are others Eager to find a moment like this And take the time to explore. Refreshed and encouraged, I began to take my leave, And in the rearview mirror the scene began to fade; But the choice to come was a choice well made.

Poets’ Corner Presented by South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers
Three Smithtown Central School District students have been selected into the Heckscher Museum of Arts’ annual juried exhibition, Long Island’s Best: Young Artists. The work of Smithtown High School West junior Laura Minet, Smithtown High School West senior Griffin Reynolds and Smithtown High School East senior Maria Impastato is
currently on exhibit. Impastato’s photograph “Veiled” was chosen for the exhibition. At the opening reception on April 16th, Minet received an honorable mention for her pen drawing “The Raven.” Reynolds won an award of achievement in black and white for his marker drawing “First Avenue.” The number of entries to this year’s competition
was a record-setting with 357 student works of art submitted from 53 high schools in Suffolk and Nassau counties. The juried selection narrowed the field of works of art created by 83 students representing 44 schools, which are featured in Long Island’s Best. The exhibition is on view through May 15th.
