Check the Calendar So much of life is spent planning, filling in those square boxes on the calendar with appointments and meetings and lunch dates and movie outings. And yet, very little of that time is spent doing things we truly enjoy. Even certain social engagements seem to take on a sense of obligation, of fitting in “fun” simply so that we can check off “reconnecting with old friends” from the neverending to do list. To do, or not to do, that is the question. Sure, there are plenty of things we “have” to do, even if we sometimes lose sight of why. We have been trained, conditioned, to meet the expectations of a society that sees any type of downtime as a bad thing.
If you’re not doing something 24/7, surely you must be shirking some responsibility or another. But what if we simply choose to kick back and relax, to spend our time “doing” nothing – and just leave it at that, no explanation needed. Is that really such a bad thing? When was the last time you slept in, just because? When did you have an entire day with absolutely nothing planned, and no sense of guilt because of it? Leisure does not equal laziness. I recently had lunch with a friend, and this very topic came up, in the context of taking a step back and truly evaluating what it is we want to do – in life as a whole, over the next several

Town of Smithtown Horizons Counseling & Education Center was named “Social Work Agency of the Year” by the National Association of Social Workers, New York State Chapter, Suffolk Division. All award winners were honored at an event on Saturday, April 22nd at the Brentwood Country Club. The Town of Smithtown wishes to share in congratulating Horizons and the other award recipients as they are recognized with these prestigious awards. Smithtown Town Supervisor Patrick Vecchio commented, “With the drug scourge so prevalent throughout Suffolk County and Smithtown, we are proud of the designation that Horizons Counseling has received as ‘Social Work Agency of the Year’ and we are proud of the good work they do on behalf of all our residents who may have a
need for these services.” This award acknowledges the exceptional social work services provided by Horizons to address the chronic and often tragic causes and consequences of substance use in the community. The Town of Smithtown’s own Horizons Counseling and Education Center, located at 161 East Main Street in Smithtown, has offered comprehensive substance abuse treatment and prevention services for adolescents, adults, and families since 1979. Horizons regularly works with various community partners, including the Smithtown Youth Bureau, local school districts, hospitals/ healthcare providers, law enforcement, and other community institutions to address substance use-related problems and provide prevention, education, and treatment programming. Horizons
and the Smithtown Youth Bureau have recently established the Youth and Community Alliance of Smithtown for the purpose of engaging and mobilizing residents and other stakeholders to work toward positive change in the Town of Smithtown communities, including a focus on substance use, bullying, and maintaining healthy family relationships. ROYAL GATHERING - It was a magical day for the second-grade classes at Accompsett Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District as the royals gathered for the Fairy Tale Ball on April 5th. As a culminating activity in their fairy tale unit, the second-graders dressed as queens, kings, princes, princesses, royal knights and various fairy tale characters for the event. Teddy Bear Clinic It was a “beary” good time for kindergarten students at Tackan Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District as they participated in a teddy bear clinic on April 18th. Kristi Ladowski, injury prevention coordinator at Stony Brook University
Children’s Hospital, visited with the students to teach them about basic first aid, safety practices and helped ease their fear of doctors and hospitals. Each student brought his/her favorite stuffed animal to practice and learned ways to stay safe.
The students enjoyed diagnosing their animals and used a Band-Aid, gauze pads, splints and tape to fix their injuries. They also learned songs to help them brush their teeth, wear a helmet and wash their hands.

On January 19th, Lil Steinberg was feted for her 95th birthday at a celebration hosted by
longtime friend and neighbor Maddy Trica of Hauppauge. She was delighted with a pizza
party and other “goodies” to recognize and celebrate her longevity. She was surrounded by her “Monday Luncheon Group” friends from Temple Beth Chai of Hauppauge, where she and her family had been members for more than 30 years. Lil and husband (now deceased) Al Steinberg moved from Brooklyn to Hauppauge in the 1980’s and they were active members of the community and the temple the entire time. Now living at Gurwin in Commack, Lil was presented with a birthday balloon, a bouquet of flowers, and a homemade cheesecake for her birthday cake.

Leadership Day On Thursday, April 6th, Ridge Elementary School held their first Leadership Day, a schoolwide initiative centered on “The Seven Habits of Happy Kids.” The program provides children with the tools necessary to develop their leadership skills in school, as well as in all aspects of their lives. Students greeted guests, led tours, shared information about The Seven Habits and showcased their daily activities. Others shared progress toward their learning goals, completed learning activities, and performed songs about
leadership. “Over the past several months, the Ridge School Lighthouse Team, along with our School Leadership Team worked closely with the students to plan the event,” said Leadership Day coordinator and teacher Malia Tully. “In preparation for the event, the students applied for Leadership Day positions, wrote scripts, and designed interactive presentations.” Leadership Day provided students with the opportunity to showcase their leadership abilities to guests including, members of the Longwood Board of Education and Central
Administration, teachers, elected officials, civic leaders and community members. Funded through the District’s School Climate Transformation Grant, the Leader in Me program teaches students to lead their lives with confidence and independence while working well with others to make meaningful contributions at school, home and in the community. The initiative is in 2,000 elementary and middle schools across the United States, Canada and around the world.

Last Saturday the Commack Fire Department hosted their 111th Installation dinner at the Hyatt Regency in Hauppauge. New Chief of Department Richard Myers was installed as well 1st Assistant Chief Paul Carnevale, 2nd Assistant Chief Bobby Wilkins, and 3rd Assistant Chief John Barry. Legislator Leslie Kennedy had the opportunity to celebrate with the Commack Fire Department and pay tribute to their distinguished firefighters. A number of Firemen were also honored for their years of volunteer service to Commack Fire Department; among the individuals honored was Rocco Rizzo, a veteran of the Marine Corps who has served the Fire Department for 50 years! Leslie Kennedy was
also able to present a proclamation with the seal of the Suffolk County Legislature fixed upon it, to Andrew Babajko who served as the Chief of Department for the last two years. Chief Babjko served the Commack Fire Department well for the past two years, and he passed the torch to Richard Myers a 9/11 responder, who is immensely experienced. “I am proud of the work that the Commack Fire Department has done throughout the year,” said Legislator Kennedy “Commack Fire Department has many skilled firefighters with decades of service. The residents of Commack ought to feel safe knowing they are protected by such a dedicated group of firefighters; I want to thank each and every one of them for their service.”
