North Shore Animal League America Conducting Adoptions By Appointment Only Essential Staff Providing Care For Animals On Campus Amid Coronavirus (Covid19) Pandemic North Shore Animal League America’s Adoption Center is currently conducting adoption by appointment only. Our Adoption Team is contacting pre-approved adopters with a scheduled day and time to complete their adoption. The health and wellbeing of NSALA staff, volunteers, adopters, and the community remains our priority at this time. We currently have over 40 dogs of various ages and sizes on campus, as well as more than 100 felines, from kittens to older cats, all looking for loving homes. As always, the animals on the NSALA Port Washington campus are being well-cared for by our devoted staff. In addition to finding homes for more than 110 canines, some of whom were from our recent Mill Dog rescue (we saved 100 dogs and puppies from deplorable

conditions with some going to our area shelter partners,) we have also placed more than 30 animals into foster homes. During this time, the Alex Lewyt Veterinary Medical Center will remain open to see sick patients and emergency cases only. While we are doing adoptions by appointment, NSALA’s Adoption Center is temporarily closed to the general public in accordance with New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo’s statewide directives and to control the number of people in the Adoption Center at any one time. How Does The New Coronavirus Affect You And Your Pets?

Pet owners can rest easy that there is no reason to believe that dogs or cats in the United States might be a source of infection for the new coronavirus disease — COVID-19 — or cause its spread according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia. And so far, according to the CDC, there have been no reports of pets becoming sick with COVID-19. This coronavirus appears to be primarily transmitted from human to human. As a pet owner, you may have heard of canine coronavirus, an intestinal infection in dogs, especially puppies, and feline coronavirus, which can cause feline infectious peritonitis (FIP). These types of coronaviruses have been around for quite some time and are not associated with the current outbreak. To protect yourself, your family, and possibly even

your pets, from this new coronavirus, you should follow these precautions: • Frequently wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water (use hand sanitizer with more than 60 percent alcohol if you can’t wash) • Avoid close contact with people who are sick—stay at least three feet away • Cover your mouth/ nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, then throw away the used tissues and wash your hands • Stay at home if you are sick • Sanitize often-used surfaces in your home and office If you do become sick with COVID-19, how then should you care for your pet? The CDC recommends that you restrict contact with pets and other animals just as you would with people. Ask another member of your

household to care for your pets while you are sick. If you must do it yourself, wash your hands before and after you interact and wear a facemask. A commemorative annual Holocaust Remembrance Day Service will be part of the weekly Friday evening Sabbath Services held on April 24 by Temple Beth Chai of Hauppauge. Public demand for environmental safeguards grew in the second half of the twentieth century, and those demands have grown stronger in recent years. Legislation is continually evolving to protect the air, land and water. Sustainability has joined the buzzwords of the movement, and most industries now have a vested interest in changes that can minimize risk to human health and the environment. Mitigating or avoiding environmental effects, proper waste disposal, reduction in water discharge, and emphasis on reducing, reusing and recycling have become important components of environmental wellness. And people are being educated at earlier stages on the importance of environmental mindfulness. For example, core subjects of the environmental movement are increasingly covered in elementary schools. Twenty million people turned out for the first Earth Day in the United States. Reduce, reuse, recycle is a mantra for many people. It’s difficult to imagine that just 50 years ago awareness of the state of the environment was not part of the collective consciousness. An emerging public consciousness about the planet began amid environmental issues like increased air pollution and massive consumption of fossil fuels in the 1960s. The bestselling book “Silent Spring” by Rachel Carson also raised public concern for living organisms and the links between pollution and public health. The push for environmental reform gained even more momentum on April 22, 1970, when the first Earth Day was celebrated. Then-Senator Gaylord Nelson from Wisconsin put Earth Day on the national stage following a large oil spill that struck off the coast of Santa Barbara, Calif. Before this disaster, recycling was not a word in the popular lexicon. But when the disaster struck, people began to reason that changes would have to be made to save the planet. Since the first Earth Day 50 years ago, many strides have been made in the environmental movement. This grassroots initiative gave rise to the establishment of the Environmental Protection Agency, the Clean Air Act and the Clean Water Act. Environmental awareness has become much more mainstream and is a less polarizing issue than it was in the 1970s, although there are still debates about the reality of climate change and other risk factors.

The Fifth Annual Run for Tomorrow’s Hope 5K Succeeds, Virtually

The Fifth Annual Run for Tomorrow’s Hope, originally scheduled for Saturday, April 4th as a road race on the streets of Garden City has been a virtual success. The event, staged by St. Joseph School in Garden City for the benefit of the Tomorrow’s Hope Foundation, a Long Island charity that provides scholarships for students who attend Long Island Catholic elementary schools, had to adapt very quickly to become a virtual race where competitors chose their own favorite place to run, clocked the distance and time using one of a variety of apps, and took a photo of themselves before, during or after their run. In spite of the unique circumstances, the event had 462 participants in the 5K and 1 mile Fun Run, 312 of them competing in the 5K itself. The event’s Race Director, Dr. Michael Spinelli, a Board Member of the Tomorrow’s Hope Foundation said “I am pleased with the way the community that supports our Catholic schools responded under rather challenging circumstances.” The race, which is run each year in the early spring, is widely supported by the families and friends of Catholic elementary and high schools. This year was no exception, with entries from 7 of the area’s Catholic high schools and with participation from 14 of the island’s Catholic elementary schools. Participating

Even though the DECA national conference has been canceled, the message presented by Smithtown High School West student Juliana Buonaiuto is still extremely important. Buonaiuto recently completed her DECA manual focusing on mental health awareness. To promote the Breaking Silence campaign and its message of mental health awareness, Buonaiuto initiated a schoolwide mental

health awareness day in January. Students were asked to dress in green to show their support and wear their “break the silence” awareness wristbands. Additionally, students signed health unity pledges at the table in front of the new mural. The mural was painted by Buonaiuto and is meant to have a lasting impact on the students of Smithtown High School West. Her inspirational message reminds students

on a daily basis to “keep their head up and their heart strong.” The Breaking Silence community service project also provided valuable resources for community members through the Smithtown High School West weekly newsletter, providing a weekly mental health and wellness tip. The newsletter was sent to all parents and students via email and the tips offers suggestions about caring for their mental health.

Uptake in Fossilized Teeth and Bones: Insight into Potential for Long-Term Uranium Waste Storage in Phosphates.” Ethan developed a model based on examination of fossilized enamel to determine isotopic ratios which served two purposes. His work will help to predict the age of fossilization for samples whose origin is unknown and could also lead to a new method of remediation of high concentrations of uranium waste. There is the potential for the storage of uranium in porous materials that would hold the radioactive substance for millions of year and even be able to withstand destructive geological conditions. Jordan’s project was, “Human Activity Recognition using Wi-Fi Channel State Information (CSI).“ The purpose of Jordan’s project was to utilize Channel State Information to distinguish between three cases: (1) the absence of human activity within a room, (2) a stationary human standing in the middle of a room, and (3) a human continuously walking throughout a room. Presently used detection methods require specialized equipment to be installed but Jordan developed a methodology for detection using existing

Wi-Fi infrastructure already present in homes, schools, and public areas. The accuracy of the data was very high for the first two cases and although lower for the third, has potential for great improvement with some adjustments. His research could revolutionize our ability to manage hostile situations within a building in the near future! “Our science research teachers spend countless hours working with our students to develop their project ideas, conduct their research, and polish their presentations and project display boards for science competitions,” said Director of Science, Dr. Alison OffermanCelentano. Ms. Jeanette Collette, Dr. Daniel Kramer, and Mrs. Andrea Beatty are the core of the program that consistently produces winners at the national and international levels each year. Poconos Family Resort Debuts At Home Programming For Guests

Two Commack High School science research students, Jordan Walsh and Ethan Sontarp, are finalists in the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), sponsored by Regeneron (formerly INTEL). Finalists were chosen regionally in this year’s virtual fair, and our student’s projects were among more than 450 submissions rated and analyzed by the judges. Our two finalists were among only 15 chosen in all of New York State. Commack High School also had five projects move on to the lightening round (semifinalists). Ethan and Jordan’s projects were included, and congratulations and semifinalist status goes to Kimberly Liao, Rohan Surana, and Candance Arneaud and Izza Maillik (team). Each student will receive a monetary award for his or her accomplishment. Only 40 projects moved on to the lightening round and these five young scientists represent 50% of our Commack projects that were entered into the fair. The students worked very hard and succeeded in winning at local and statewide competitions to earn a spot at ISEF. Ethan was also a finalist at last year’s ISEF. For one science and health-focused family in Long Island’s Catholic school community the global pandemic and cancellation of this year’s STEM Fair gave them the time, and the incentive they needed to go above and beyond what anyone could have expected. The Stadelman family, intrigued by the global shortage of medical ventilators, built a ventilator in their kitchen with items they had around the house and in Mr. Stadelman’s first aid kit. Meet Erin and Robert Stadelman, and their son Michael. Erin is a computer/technology teacher at Our Lady of the Hamptons Regional School in Southampton. Her

husband, Robert, works as an Electrical Engineer and volunteers as an EMTCC (Emergency Medical Technician - Critical Care) in their home town. Their son, Michael, is a student at St. Mary’s School in East Islip. Like the rest of us, they are respecting the quarantine by staying home. Also like the rest of us, the Stadelman’s wanted to do something to help. Unlike the rest of us, the Stadelman family actually used their time at home to build a ventilator! During the build, Robert Stadelman taught son Michael a lot about the inner components and machinations of a ventilator; about BVMs (bag valve masks), what a piston is and does, and Michael learned to work

with electronics and circuits. For Robert, this was a proof of concept prototype. “I sure with a little work we could improve this to be a viable emergency ventilator.
