The Week That Was By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Let’s try something different for a change. Instead of waiting until the eleventh hour to compose my thoughts for the week, I’ve decided to jot down a bit each day, with hopes that these random ramblings will gel into a somewhat coherent theme. Sounds just abstract enough to work. Monday… The weekly “fresh start” we all seek, yet are often disappointed by about 10 minutes into. For me, the perfect opportunity to catch up on the avalanche of e-mails that have surely accumulated over the weekend, while methodically trying to plan the remainder of the week’s activities. A quick scan of social media says everyone is still buzzing about last night’s
highly anticipated season premiere of Game of Thrones. Me, I’m still working my way through the series of five larger-than-life books. Tuesday… Into the fray again, trying to keep pace with the workflow in preparation for my day off on Friday, yet another reason to get a jump on that column. Nothing but rain and clouds outside, which makes for a decidedly dreary disposition. But, I suppose such an atmosphere is far more conducive to accomplishing tasks on the endless To Do list. Better not to be tempted by the sun’s rays, beckoning you to take an extended lunch. Wednesday… Yet another lovely day in the neighborhood, or so I briefly glimpsed on my way into the office. Word is it’s 66º and sunny. One of these days, this
kind of weather will coincide with a weekend. Maybe. But alas, here I sit at my keyboard, typing away at the local community news and events. Summer fun in the sun can’t come soon enough. Thursday… The eleventh hour. One day short of a deadline; for me, tomorrow will be spent helping to run the Society of Professional Journalists’ Annual Region I Conference, this year hosted by Hofstra University and sponsored by our very own Press Club of Long Island. A full schedule of panels and lectures by some of the region’s finest journalists is on tap, a muchneeded reminder of why it was I became involved in this field to begin with. And so, I’m off. Stay tuned for a full recap of the conference next week!

May 9th. Here’s how it works. Long Islanders are being asked to set out non-perishable food by their mailboxes on May 9th, which will then be picked up by their letter carriers while delivering the day’s mail. The letter carriers will then deliver their collected food to an Island Harvest “Stamp Out Hunger” warehouse – where an army of volunteers will sort food, to be distributed immediately to Island Harvest’s network of 570 member agencies, including food pantries and soup kitchens throughout Long Island. “While the letter carriers do all of the day’s heavy lifting, Stamp Out Hunger makes donating easy. All people have to do is leave their donation by their mailbox,” asserts Randi Shubin Dresner, President & CEO, Island Harvest. “Our goal is for every family to donate something, and let their letter carriers do the rest. It’s that simple.” “The harsh winter weather this year presented Long Islanders experiencing hunger with many challenges, including pay loss due to the weather, making it an even more difficult time to put food on the table,” explained Dresner. “This, coupled with the usual springtime need for food following the depletion of our holiday donations, makes this year’s Stamp Out Hunger food drive essential.” Since the inception of Stamp Out Hunger in 1992, over 1.3 billion pounds of food have been collected by letter carriers in the United States. Locally, last year Long Islanders donated more than 326,000 pounds of food and this year, Island Harvest expects a similar amount to be collected by letter carriers on 2,219 carrier routes across Long Island. “The most trusted federal employees, U.S. Postal Service letter carriers are routinely involved in many community outreach initiatives, and often, form very close relationships with their customers,” said Walter Barton, President, NALC. “It is this connection they have within their communities that compels them to want to help make a difference.” Stamp Out Hunger is the nation’s largest food drive that has been taking place now for 23 years. “Stop and Shop is pleased

Almost one in every four women in the United States have some sort of pelvic floor disorder such as pelvic organ prolapse, and more women are likely to be affected as the population ages. Jennifer Hill, MD, a urologist specializing in female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery at the Arthur Smith Institute for Urology, part of North Shore-LIJ Health System, discusses what you need to know about this condition.
What is pelvic organ prolapse (POP)? Pelvic organ prolapse refers to the prolapse (drooping) of any of the pelvic floor organs such as the bladder, uterus, vagina, small bowel or rectum. These organs are said to prolapse if they descend into or outside of the vaginal canal or anus. Are there different types of POP? There are several different types of prolapse. These include: • Cystocele — a prolapse of the bladder into the vagina, the most common condition • Uterine prolapse — a prolapse of the uterus into the vaginal canal • Vaginal vault prolapse — prolapse of the vagina • Enterocele — small bowel prolapse • Rectocele — rectum prolapse
What are the symptoms? Many women do not have symptoms and do not require treatment. However, urinary and bowel urgency and frequency, vaginal bulging, and pelvic pain and pressure are all common symptoms of prolapse that may be very bothersome to the patient. What treatments are available? Many women with POP can manage their symptoms conservatively with pelvic floor exercises to tighten and strengthen the pelvic floor, high-fiber diets to prevent constipation, reaching and maintaining a healthy weight and avoiding activities that stress the pelvic muscles, such as heavy lifting.
If conservative management fails, and the pain and discomfort are still present, you may want to consider having surgery for the condition. Often, more than one of these types of surgery are needed at the same time. The types of surgery available include: • Cystoscele repair — for bladder prolapse • Hysterectomy (removal of the uterus) — for uterine prolapse • Rectocele repair — repair of the rectum • Enterocele repair — repair of small bowel prolapsing into the vagina • Vaginal vault repair — suspension of the vaginal vault • Closure of the vagina — for severe procidentia (all pelvic organs protruding from the vagina)

What are the risk factors? Risk factors for POP include difficult deliveries, a family history of POP, obesity, advancing age, a prior hysterectomy and conditions that chronically increase intra-abdominal pressure such as asthma, chronic cough or constipation.

This is the 5th year that TFCU has run this fundraiser for Little Shelter. Throughout the month, TFCU patrons generously donated - food, blankets, toys and cash all generously provided for the benefit of Little Shelter’s cats and dogs. On February 28th, Little Shelter was asked to bring two dogs to the Smithtown branch as an added attraction to the collection that was being taken. You guessed it, Betty and Wilma were the dogs in attendance, and those girls
know how to work a crowd! In fact, Betty and Wilma had recently participated in a dog fashion show where they were a big hit and a crowd favorite. The TFCU event turned out to be a special day for these two senior dogs, for it was at this event that Betty and Wilma met their new family. One of TFCU’s wonderful patrons saw these girls in the branch and there was an instant connection. After the event, the family visited Wilma and Betty at Little Shelter and decided to adopt them! What a wonderful ending for both the family and for these great dogs.

Wilma and Betty, two senior Labrador mixes, spent several months at Little Shelter this past winter. These two wonderful, friendly dogs had lost their home and were living at a town shelter when Little Shelter stepped up and rescued them. They were so attached to one another that Little Shelter knew they had to try to find them placement in the same home; they simply wouldn’t have been happy otherwise. Now, finding a home for one large, senior dog is difficult; finding a home for two is near impossible, but Little Shelter knew they had to try.

Suffolk County Legislators Robert Trotta and Lesley Kennedy, County Comptroller John Kennedy, and Assemblyman Michael Fitzpatrick recognized John “Jack” Esposito for achieving the esteemed rank of Eagle Scout at his recent Court of Honor. For his Eagle Scout Community Service Project, Jack designed, built and installed an outdoor memorial to
encase a piece of steel from the World Trade Center at the Town of Brookhaven Volunteer Firefighters’ Museum. The memorial will serve as a permanent remembrance of all the lives lost on September 11th, 2001. This project was very meaningful to Jack, whose Father and Uncle are both firefighters in the New York City Fire Department, as well as Eagle Scouts. “Jack has demonstrated
he is capable of responsibility and leadership by completing the tasks necessary to become an Eagle Scout. He achieved this distinction and award prior to the age of 18 and this accomplishment is one that he will have for the rest of his life. He is an inspiration to others,” said Suffolk County Legislator Robert Trotta.

Together they decided to motivate employees to sign up to help raise funds and awareness for Friends of Karen and for the past three years many of their employees trained together to do the 10K event. “Each year, post-event, there was not only a sense of accomplishment in helping the families of Friends of Karen but a significant positive shift in how our staff were relating to one another.” This year, soon after the employees starting mapping out their training course, one of them shared that a colleague had a child diagnosed with cancer and sent them directly to Friends of Karen for assistance. “We witnessed first-hand how they respond so earnestly to families in need,” said Ms. Bhullar. Funds raised from the Walk-Run will directly benefit families who are assisted by Friends of Karen’s Family Support program which helps with household bills, health insurance, medical co-

The 8th New York District Knights of Columbus in Suffolk County recently held their 17th Annual Pasta Dinner to support the Life Center of Long Island. This year’s event was held at Our Lady of Grace Parish in West Babylon on Sunday, April
12th, 2015. The four councils in the District worked all day with the staff of the Life Center to serve over 300 guests for a great pasta dinner and impressive Chinese Auction with beautiful gift baskets and prizes. Working together, the
Knights of Columbus and the Life Center raised over $20,000 to help protect the unborn in our area. The guest speaker of the event was Father Stephen H. Donnelly of St. Patrick’s Parish in Huntington.

Project Lifesaver April is not only Autism Awareness Month, it’s typically a time when people begin to spend more time outdoors to enjoy the warmer weather. However, for a parent or guardian of a child with autism, a trip to the local park or downtown might cause significant safety concerns because children with autism have a tendency to wander off. The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office offers a program that could help alleviate some of the stress associated with wandering behavior, and Sheriff Vincent DeMarco is urging parents to call his office to learn more about its Project Lifesaver initiative.
Project Lifesaver is a countywide emergency response locator service capable of finding individuals if they wander and become lost. Clients wear a personalized one ounce battery operated transmitter bracelet which emits a tracking signal every second, 24 hours a day. Transmitters are smaller than a quarter and each transmitter has its own unique frequency. Additionally, the Sheriff’s Project Lifesaver personnel are specially trained, not only in search and rescue with the use of the electronic tracking equipment, but also in the methods necessary to communicate with a
person who has a cognitive impairment such as Autism, or other mental challenges. “If you or someone you know could benefit from this lifesaving technology, we urge you to call us for more information. It could literally save a life,” said Sheriff DeMarco. To be eligible for Project Lifesaver, clients must be a resident of Suffolk County and have a cognitive impairment diagnosis that is confirmed by a physician. Squadron Welcome On May 23rd, the Long Island Ducks will welcome the United States Power Squadrons District 3 to Bethpage Ballpark in Central Islip. The United States Power Squadrons is the largest and oldest non-profit organization dedicated teaching boating skills and safety. District 3 is made up of local squadrons that cover geographic Long Island with members in Brooklyn, Queens, Nassau and Suffolk. Squadron members, led by District Commander Ann Peltier of Patchogue, will enjoy pregame festivities, the ballgame
itself between the Long Island Ducks and the Camden Riversharks, the singing of God Bless America during the seventh inning stretch, led by squadron member Douglas Durfee, and a post game fireworks show. Members hope to share their massage with everyone in attendance that a better educated boater can not only enjoy our waters with more confidence, but in the wake of recent tragedies can be a safer boater as well. Education is each squadron’s primary objective, but members
also participate in civic activities, environmental efforts, offer free vessel safety inspections, and enjoy working together to make Long Island and our waterways better. Established in 1914, the United States Power Squadrons, is dedicated to community service, boater education, and boating safety.
