The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office has created two Safe Transaction Zones designed to help protect citizens from various crimes associated with online transactions
including robberies, thefts and assaults. Future planning will expand this initiative to additional locations. The safe transaction zones are located at the
Sheriff’s Office, 100 Center Drive in Riverhead and at our Yaphank Facility, (address). Both are clearly marked with red and white signs and are in full view of on duty Deputy Sheriffs.
Over time these areas will be enhanced with video cameras. Citizens are encouraged to use the marked areas as a place to meet and conduct transactions that require

Smithtown High School East students Alessandro Tartamella and Kessandra Chisholm competed against districts from across Long Island in the annual American Association of Teachers of Italian poetry contest at SUNY Old Westbury on April 8th. In the level 5 category, Tartamella placed third, and Chisholm received honorable mention. The winners recited their poems for an Italian radio station (WHRU 88.7 FM) at Hofstra University on April 9th.

Day of Remembrance Two powerful guest speakers took the stage to deliver their stories of survival during Holocaust Remembrance and Genocide Awareness Day on April 7th at Smithtown High School West. Tenth-graders spent the day learning about the tragedies of genocide in both the past and present. Holocaust survivor and Smithtown resident Werner Reich spoke about his experiences in concentration camps. During the question-and-
answer session, students learned more about how he survived, his feelings during his imprisonment and how he made his way to the United States. Film presentations on the genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda and Darfur gave students an inside perspective into the violence that has occurred in other countries. After learning about the current civil war in Syria, students participated in a fundraising effort for Syria children. Each
student created and designed a pinwheel that will be mailed to the Bezos Family Foundation. The foundation will match each pinwheel with a $2 donation to the International Rescue Committee’s Healing Classrooms program. Joseph Sebarenzi, a Rwandan genocide survivor, closed out the day by recounting his journey of survival of civil wars and genocide in Rwanda and his insights about conflict prevention and reconciliation.

Random Rambles By: Jamie Lynn Ryan It’s been a rough year. Less than four months in and, well, I know many people who are already looking for a do-over. Sure, every period of time has its ups and downs, highs and lows. But honestly, since the moment the ball dropped in Times Square this past New Year’s Eve, it seems that everything began falling right along with it. At least it’s Spring. There is something uplifting about sunshine-filled afternoons and flower blossoms that does bring a smile to the face, however fleeting it may be. And of course, those sunworshippers among us have to be looking forward to
summer and beach outings and barbeques. But until then… It’s April. April 15th, to be exact, as I write these words. Tax Day (although, technically speaking, we were graced with a few extra days tacked on to the filing deadline this year). The Easter Bunny has come and gone. Baseball diamonds are abuzz with activity. Pretty soon, school will be out of session and the parks and pools will be flooded with families having fun. And so it goes. From dawn until dusk, one season into the next, day after day, week after week, month after month; until, before you know it, a decade has passed in the blink of an eye. In just a couple of
weeks, I will be celebrating my 11th year as editor and columnist at this very paper. How much has changed in that span of time… The best thing we can do – the only thing, really – is to embrace each day, with all its nuances, and appreciate whatever it may bring into our respective lives. The list of things beyond our control is endless; the key to happiness lies in how we react to them, what we learn from them, and how we use them to better ourselves as individuals. I’m no philosopher, but that much I’ve pick up in my 33 years roaming this planet. Here’s wishing everyone a brighter tomorrow… and the day after… and the day after…

Under the direction of Valerie Jones, the Concert Winds Ensemble performed our National Anthem and Trumpet Voluntary to open the meeting. The Gemini Youth Orchestras is composed of 250 musicians from across Long Island, who perform in ensembles including the Concert Winds, Philharmonia, String Orchestra, Repertory and Youth Symphony. Hauppauge Middle School students in the Pause 4 Paws Puppy Club recently hosted three very special visitors – Pickles, Max and Buddy – rescue dogs that were adopted from the New York State Retriever Rescue Inc. (NYSRR) organization. “The presenters cared for the dogs. I can tell that they took on a lot of responsibility for the dogs,” described Hauppauge Middle School Student Srinija Gumudavelli. NYSSR Volunteer Steve Lefkowitz spoke with the Hauppauge students about the differences between animal shelters and rescue organizations, what a rescue group does, the importance of spay/ neuter programs and the impact they have on rescue groups and shelters, etc. He additionally shared

In two separate ceremonies, Legislator Leslie Kennedy congratulated two future leaders of America, presenting them with the Eagle Scout Award. Nicholas D. Froehlich, of Troop 214 of Smithtown, and William J. Urdahl, of Troop 333 of Hauppauge, were each presented with the award marking their promotion into the Eagle Scouts, the highest and most prestigious rank attainable within the Boy Scouts of America. The ascension to Eagle Scout is a long process
which takes years of teaching, training and public service. The final step, the Eagle Scout Service Project, requires the potential scout to lead a purely nonprofit project for the benefit of the local community, and both recipients are no exception. Mr. Froehlich, honored at the First Presbyterian Church in Smithtown, volunteered at the local Sweetbriar Nature Center, a private institution promoting local wildlife conservation, by remodeling and improving upon a cage used to house
Kestrels. Mr. Urdahl, whose promotion was celebrated at the Ronkonkoma Fire Department, helped clear part of the Hauppauge Calvary Lutheran Church’s grounds and constructed four benches to facilitate the development of an outdoors worship area. Eagle Scouts represent the highest echelon of Boy Scout achievement and leadership, counting individuals such as director Steven Spielberg, President Gerald Ford and former New York mayor Michael Bloomberg among its ranks.
Fairy Tales Come Alive It was a magical day as kings and queens, princes and princesses all appeared at Accompsett Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District for its annual second-grade Fairy Tale Ball on April 12th. The ball is the culminating activity for the second-grade
classes in their reading and writing units on the fairy tale genre. Dressed as their favorite fairy tale characters, the students entered the gym in a royal procession. After a dance performance with their partners, all the classes sang the “Cinderella Rap,” “Once Upon a Time” and “Anything Can Happen.”
Each class then took to the stage for a reading of a classic tale including “The Princess and the Pea,” “The Three Bears,” “The Three Little Pigs” and “Little Red Riding Hood.” Attendees were then invited back to the classrooms for a royal feast.

The top four winners from each of the Cub Scout Packs in the Matinecock District (which encompasses Western Smithtown and all of the Town of Huntington) were eligible to take part in this event. With friends, parents, and volunteer scouting adults from the Pack and the Scout District to cheer them on, matrix style races were held for the 85 Tigers, • 3rd place - Jack E. of Pack 125, Commack Cub Scouts, and Webelos Scouts and their cars. Some students rise above and beyond their fellow classmates, all students are called to study and prepare for their exams, but some students go the extra mile, and Emily McDermott is one such student. Having been selected as one of the few Intel Semi-Finalists for her research, Legislator Leslie Kennedy saw it fitting to honor her before the full legislature last Tuesday. Ms. McDermott conducted her research with a team at Stony Brook University in the lab of Dr. Joshua Rest. Emily’s
work is titled “Developing an Experimental Model for Natural Variation in Genetic Robustness” which focused on genetic robustness that occurs naturally. The variation in robustness tends to be quite large and she sought to find a relationship that could explain the variation of naturally occurring robustness. The work that was performed by Emily was on the level of graduate study lab work and Emily did all of her own code writing for this study. Legislator Leslie Kennedy was pleased

Savvy Investors Five students from Tackan Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District placed first in their region in the Stock Market Game. Fifth-graders Leana Arcese, Caitlyn McGann, Kathleen Olsen, Chris Trebing and Cameron West in Danielle Anderson’s and Caitlin Campbell’s classes took the top spot against 123 fifththrough eighth-graders, winning by more than
$9,000. The team also placed sixth overall out of 953 fifththrough 12th-graders. The Stock Market Game is a 10-week program that explores the fundamentals of personal finance and investing. Students worked in teams to build and manage an investment portfolio in a realworld, dynamic marketplace. They were given a simulation of $100,000 to invest, analyze and make critical decisions on how to gain the most equity in
the short timeframe. Students learned what stocks were and how to analyze the markets’ gains and losses using various financial websites. They developed an understanding of economics through creating an investment portfolio. Each week, the teams would check their account holdings and decide to buy, sell or maintain their investments.
